That 1953 four-door Beetle in the Wolfsburg museum was made by Rometsch, the coach-building firm that also made various coupes on the VW platform.
The Brasilia was a great looking little car (made from 1973-82) that looked like a little Type 4. But it was based on the Beetle platform, so it was a bit smaller. It was also assembled in Nigeria as the VW Igala. Very popular in South and Central America, but never sold in Australia of course. And it was only ever made in two-door versions. It was replaced by the VW Gol.
The Type 4 (411 and 412) were intended for sale in Australia, and a handful were brought here for evaluation by LNC Industries in 1969. But they decided that it was too expensive for sale here. There were two and four-door sedan versions of the Type 4, but for some reason the variant (station wagon) was only ever made with two doors.
The first VW to be available in four door sedan AND wagon versions was the Passat, from 1974 on.
