I note the two electrical connectors, is it a starter motor...or?
hellbugged ·
it's an "ignition coil"......... for spark to engine
Sides ·
Hmm... is this a trick question ???
My vote is it's an ignition coil...
😉

Looks like a tea towel with a Labrador on it.

Ok thanks,
must be there for a spare then as the car is going fine.

No trick, just wasn't sure what it was supposed to be for.
Found out there is a little cubby hole under the back seat that bits and pieces can fit into.

If you dont know what it is
you shouldnt be driving a VW

That's not very nice Dave, we all started somewhere. At least they now know what an ignition coil looks like. And they also know not to short across the + and - terminals.....BOOM ! 😂
Bizarre ·
Dave is obviously having one of "his" days 🙅

lo0ks like an old toboggen i made out of a handfull of cigaret buts i could be wrong

geez give the poor guy a break Dave, not everyones been playing with VWs since ferdi was in nappies
desh wrote:Found out there is a little cubby hole under the back seat that bits and pieces can fit into.
i once looked under there to and found floor pans with no rust holes
was pretty stoked with that
desh ·
If I could ask please one further question,
This ignition coil, is this one that would have been fitted to a Beetle when new?
Or incorrect if you are going for completely original look? If so what do the original ones look like?
thank you.
Joel ·
it is an original but the pics are to close to tell if its a 6v or 12v
the 6 volt coils are slightly smaller in lenght
vw54 ·
yep looks like an origional they were all painted black
the newer ones were usually anodise alloy outer skins with black bakelite tops
it should say 6v on there some where maybe on the blank end

That's excellent thanks
It's 6V, has that on the bottom, also a part number
111 905 105 T 0 221 116 111
Will be good to keep as a spare then,
thanks for your help once again

Thanks, as I want to keep my car looking original, even down to small things like engine parts

If I'm reading correctly, the text after Bosch, Germany, says "Importe D'Allemagne", which would make it a German coil exported to France or some other cheese-eating surrender-monkey country. The plot thickens. Are you French, desh? Or is that d'esh?
desh ·
Hello yes that's what it says, you are correct
I'm Tasmanian! (don't hold that against me)
I was lifting up the rear seat to check the battery and found this with a spare fan belt and some other things I'm not sure of what they are in there.

Photo's of these "other things..."....

I'll put them up tomorrow,
this was the most interesting looking "thing" there.
From what Google can tell me, TE6A3 coils were used until mid August 1956 - then TE6B1 coils were used until ???.
I suggest that before you put that coil away as a spare, you give it a solid test run first.
desh ·
Thank you volumex,
reading this info I have a "408" code stamped in the bottom of the ignition coil.
making it August 1964, which is the month and year of my car's production. based on the VIN number:
Maybe then just a coincidence or this might be the original ignition coil out of my car.

desh wrote:or this might be the original ignition coil out of my car.
Probs best to test it before "keeping it as a spare..." 45 year old coil...

Hopefully I don't sound like an idiot asking.....but how does one test this?
I have a multimeter, can it be tested with this? Or is it something I should get my mechanic to test?
I guess you guys have figured it out but I don't work on my own cars and have a fairly limited knowledge of what's what.
Yes I have changed the oil on a car before, spark plugs, changed a wheel, but that's about it.
colonel mustard ·
Dude, I reconmend getting the "how to keep your volkswagen alive" - compleat idiots guide by John Muir 🙂
There are many ways to check the coil, but probs have your mechanic check it.... it can hurt you if you stuff it up.
volumex ·
Test it by putting it on and driving around a bit (up hill full throttle if you can)
If you can change the oil & spark plugs, then changing the coil is easy. Just find the coil (usually bolted to the LHS of the fan housing), find the code numbers of the terminals, check the same codes are used on the spare, write the code numbers on the wires, pull the wires off, swap the coils and put the wires back on.
colonel mustard ·
Take photos before doing anything. wear shoes. dont touch the body of the car with one hand and the coil terminals with the other. 🙂
volumex ·
Somewhere in my forgettory I recall that it is possible to drop new innards into the old coil case, so that way if you are one of these anal originality types like me then you can keep using the "original" coil with the correct date code.
desh ·
These are the other things I found
I am guessing that the top thing is something out of a seat?
Not sure what the little curved metal bar is for though?
Cannot see any numbers or writing on these parts.
squizy ·
The top thing looks like a battery strap.
ian.mezz ·
OK the very first picture is a flux compasitator??sorry if the spelling is wrong and the next one is a battery strap.
last one is a bent bit of steel😂😂
desh ·
The bent piece of metal appears to have been shaped like that, not like someone has just bent it. The way the curves are in it....
I thought it might have been a hubcap remover but there is not edge on it to pry a hubcap off with.
Battery Strap....ok didn't think of that, usually see metal plates in other cars for that,
thanks to everyone for your help.
volumex ·
That bent bit of steel could be a sump plug removal tool. If it's 8mm SQ then it fits Peugeots 405/306/205 etc etc. I think the Fiat/Lancia Lampredi twin cam sump plugs were around 10mm SQ??
Nice looking tool, someone has put a bit of effort into shaping it - be interesting to find out what it is for.
modulus ·
It's a square peg that has been fitted to a round hole.
hth
vw54 ·
thats one half of the battery strap for a 6V battery you need the cover and other half to make it work
