which laptop?

BUGBOY ·

Looking at a new laptop, its for just email and surfing the net etc
I have at the moment a Toshiba and think i'll stick with the same thing.
My question is as the new computer is 2GB and is not duel core, will it run slow with windows vista? Will I notice any different compared to my old computer which is smaller but on windows XP.

modulus ·

For email and net surfing, you don't need cpu/memory performance, just good bandwidth, so should be OK.
However, why not run XP? It's much lighter in resource use. With Vista on the machine you're considering, it will be a very basic edition so you won't see any user interface improvements and to nmy mind the security improvements in Vista are so intrusive and annoying you'll end up turning them off....
I'm running a Core 2 Quad Processor with 4GB memory on my desktop with XP Pro- it runs fine ;-)

I have Vista on my Toshiba Laptop....it sucks, don't do it 🙅

Get an apple Mac
no one ever go's back!

RISKYBUG ·

hi mate 2 gb ram will run vista fine for net and email
if you want to play games run 4 gb
and there are a few tuneup tricks for vista to run better (save some ram)
the main prob was selling vista is systems with 512 ram and it would use it all my startup
1 gb is min i think and anythink with 2 up runs ok
also what do you mean the new ones not dual core? triple or quad?
my last two pc's i have used asus motherboards so if your shopping around try them
stay away from dell unless you atleast go for a nice xps
cheers

+1 I got a MacBook Pro. Best thing I did.

I like Dell. I have a 3 yr old cheap Dell Inspiron 6000 and it still runs perfect. My mum has the same with no issues.

I have $4000 HP laptop for work, and it sucks. The sound is too quite, the screen too dull, it tries to cook anything on the left of it, it runs too hot to actually be used in your lap, the 2hr battery is down to about 30min life after only 18months of use. It will kill the Dell in 3D graphics / CAD applications, but worse for everything else.

Mac's own. I droped mine down concrete stairs today.... its fine...

Hi

Macs are good in some things, but cant run 2 programs I would need to use.

Steve

colonel mustard ·

I find they freeze up alot less.... but I dont think about how much a computer can handle at once.... Im just not that nice to them. great for artsy stuff - photo's - photoshop - music etc 🙂

Gary L ·

Do not do Vista if you have friends with XP all earlier some Vista programs can not be read by XP very annoying with email. You just cannot open it.

1303Steve ·

Hi

What I was getting at was there is 2 programs that I need to run and they are not Mac supported.

One is Garmin Mapsource, the other is tuning software for my EFI system.

I've been using XP almost non stop for 3 years at home and at work. I've only managed to get it to blue screen once. Perhaps if you use pirated cracked software its different. I dont recall any problems with Win2K either. Windows 98... thats a different story.

I dont know what you should get (other than echoing the Vista is horrible line) but I wouldnt use stability as a factor. I dont think its an issue anymore.

Oh and I hate this Norton 360. I'm convinced it has robbed me of a lot of my speed. Again, I dont know the best alternative.

amazeer,

Eset Nod32 is very low on resources and a good antivirus + anti spyware.

Thanks for all the info.
At the moment I'm running XP and wanted to up date as my laptops about 4 years old.
I have used a few computers with Vista and didn't really like it.
But as I only need a smaller computer, and they all come with Vista looks like I might stick with what I have for a bit longer?
If I get a bigger system I can get a down grade to XP from Vista but its a more expensive computer.

Anthiron ·

i use vista, honestly guys he said its for email etc. just buy a display model thats been marked down as its the only one left. something with 2 gig of ram, 2 gig processor, 200/160gb hdd, webcam, cpl of USB ports, anything else is a bonus, spend 1000 bucks, get vista home premium and be done.

RISKYBUG ·

the new windows 7 is coming up and sounds like on an old pc will be faster the vista ...i have never heard on a new os the runs faster the an old one
and as for vista you can drop the areo look and looks
a lot like xp and a more things to speed it up
everyone will always talk crap about the new os but then in 2 years will be telling you how great it was and the new one is crap
happen when xp came out happen when 2000 came out same 98 and same 95
most people will have probs getting old stuff to work on the next windows and so on

amazeer ·

I think vista is microsofts biggest blunder since the BSOD at the product launch way back when. You have all these people (like my sister) going out spending big on a new up spec PC to find it takes 3 times as long to boot up and runs at half the speed. Sure you can turn half of the crap off, but its defaulted on, and 99% of users dont have the knowledge to turn it off. They just want to switch on, double click and read their email. Exactly the way it should be. Nobody would go out and buy a car with a 50kmh speed limiter that was put in because its safer and more economical, only to have to take it to a mechanic who could spend an hour or two to remove it just so you can drive it to work. Its stupid.

MAC BOOK pro
All I'm gonna say.

colonel mustard ·

I've got a powerbook G4!!! its second hand... 4 years old, and runs better than my rents' new PC

h ·

the mac is calling you my son
i have a toshiba lappy too but now it just gathers dust as it runs useless windows os
windows os translated = super slow and unsecure
go mac and never look back

most new laptops don't come with XP drivers so they are stuck with SHista. There are some out there that can be downgraded but if you wanted a brand new one wait till windows 7 comes out properly.
If you are pretty savvy with puters then use Ubunto or some other linux OS. They feel very much like XP but are much quicker.
and you don't need to buy a mac because the chipsets and CPU's of windows and MACs are made by Intel so you can create a 'hackintosh', which is a Windows laptop but with the mac OS running on it. Because of the hardware there are loads of BIOS hacks out there so that the mac OS works on the laptops because macs have dedicated hardware so the OS doesn't require drivers like Windows. The BIOS hack bypasses this problem 🙂

Mac is king end of story!👍

They are good but they do cost something rotten!!!! My manager has been running a hackintosh for over 6 months now and now had any problems with it. It flies along sooooo much quicker than XP. I will be very interested to see what 7 is like, being that it uses optimised code for change.

sikdub ·

Nath seriously, unless your laptop has died don't buy a new computer until you can get it with Windows 7. Ask Jim how good the beta version was if you want another opinion.

Considering a new laptop myself.
Cannot decide between a Mac or a new PC.
Anyone care to say more about Macs than simply "they rule"?

Also, have heard about a program called BootCamp on the Macs, lets you run Windows off the MacBook/MBPro.
How does this go? Works fine, doesnt slow down etc?

nathan...
mate if you need a new laptop... send me a PM. i can help you out.❗

the only limitation with Mac's is the software available. It's pretty good these days but there are still more Windows software than Mac.
You can run a virtual windows machine on a MAc too. Or Windows emulator.
Mac's are far more stable than Windows and they don't have that bloody annoying registry that gets corrupted and can't be restored unless you do a fresh install of Windows. Be interesting if Windows 7 has this problem too.
