I must be getting old. I haven't a clue what you guys are talking about.

Hang on, back in a minute, I just have to turn the Elvis record over that my turntable is playing...

ELVIS IS AWESOMEEEEEEE!!!!!!! 馃檪 I wish I had his record rather than all these Abba LP's.... yeah, Im 19. and I know about LP's and 45's. 馃檪

phil you cant be THAT old. it isn't gracie fields on the gramaphone.

Phil74Camper 路

It could be - I can flick the diamond stylus over, which has a sapphire stylus on the other side, and play some 78s. No I don't have any Gracie Fields, but I do have some Rosemary Clooney (George's aunty). Her version of This Ol House beats the hell out of Shakin Stevens.

A question for the youngies - how many grooves does a 12" vinyl record, with 12 songs on it, have - if you add both sides together?

colonel mustard 路

Well... I have no Idea what 78 is.... I asked my dad, and he was totally confused.

AS for Grooves.... Its always different, isn't it? If you really want to grove check this out,.... http://www.myspace.com/chrispoulsentrio 馃檪

I'm bustin to answer that but I don't qualify as a young'un. 馃ゲ

The sound quality is just so much better on vinyl isn't it. I've heard so many of my Lp's re-released on Cd and there just seems to be so much missing (besides the hiss and crackle). Mp3 recordings miss even more.

Regards,

Matt.

Jason I must be older than your Dad then - I have more than 100 78s in a box in my garage. They were 10" diameter gramophone records, made of stiff heavy shellac instead of vinyl. They were played at 78 rpm, instead of the 45 rpm used for 7" singles, and 33.3 rpm for 12" LPs. You needed a sapphire stylus (needle) instead of the diamond stylus used for vinyl records. 78s were made until the late '50s, but record players made until the '70s usually had a '78' speed setting.

The groove question isn't difficult. There is only ONE groove per side. It just spirals inwards.

My old vinyl albums have enough wear now to be a bit hissy and crackly, so I usually just stick to CDs. But vinyl LPs had big covers, great for album artwork as the 'canvas' is much bigger than the little booklet size you get with CDs. All the great album artwork came from the vinyl era.
