Hi all, this is my wifes type 3.
I put the 13B twin turbo cosmo engine in it back in eirly 2005 with factory ecu and 2L kombi auto.
At the same time i changed the brakes to series 6 rx7 4 piston front and single on the rear, with cable handbrake and vented rotors 320mm fr, 305mm rear.
The rims are 18x8 42mm offset and 225x35 tyres
This setup made 198rwhp on 7psi, after a hot summers day drive from gold coast to brisbane and no intercooler.
Thought i would show you some pic's, as i straighten the rear, add some bracing and add a TA45 turbo, external wastgate, microtech ecu ect.
I drove it to brisbane every day for a year and noticed after when i was pulling it apart for a resprey, that the left rear was down 15mm from the right.
The late type 3's are very week around the engine mounts, so i must do some work before it get's paint and some more power.

That's the kind of bracing that would hold up a roof ... so i think it might work 🤪
I am looking forward to seeing this one.

Bec said "i have a lader in the back of my car"😂
It's the only way to keep the body from draging on the ground. Theres no room for horns with an 010 auto, and lots of power.

Damn, if that things racing at warwick I better clean the huntsmans out of the datto's carby in my racing squareback. I might have to break the team china rules and actually tune up the squaredat and...... shock horror......s s s spend some money on car.

Those slippers would look snazy on troy, But i don't think he has to worry as i have soooo much to do.
I'll post some more pic's later in the week after i do some more.
Started rebuilding the porsche box for my bay (Thomas) to try and make dynomaina. Just waiting on 1st gear bearing from germany, $308.00 with $43 discount. Thats why it's been apart for 8 months.

holey radioactive bird droppings Batman 🤪 that is somewhat expensive for a bearing!!! I could finish the welding on my bug for that amount.

can't wait until warwick because this year will be my first time at drag racing.(watch out aaron i might get addicted)

Nice work,
What is your cooling system setup?
I'd love to do this to my poo brown beetle.
20bkombi ·
This is the old setup with out the top on.
Twin 12'' thermos but thinking of changing to a hydraulic unit, which is sitting in there at the moment .
I just finished my brothers bay 2l subi, and used the camary hydraulic fan which is running of the powersteering pump.
Works fine.
I cut two holes under the bumper. Just used pinch weld around the holes.
typethreeking ·
aaron you really have some work to do with becs car, your car and helping out other( like myself) if you need a hand i would be glad to return the favour...
20bkombi ·
Thanks Troy, Good mates are hard to come by, although, not so in the vw scene.
Shock, horror, I'm having a weekend off.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
So do i see the final of the VW other powered category at Warwick 09 being a certain black kombi vs a honey brown Squareback on the horizon ......
20bkombi ·
Hi all, finally back on bec's car to day, after working 2 months of 65-70hrs pr week and more to come.
I've scraped the rear frame, 1.6mm and started over with 2.5mm 25x25 box steel. I'll post pics tomorrow.
The goal is warwick so have a lot of late nights/mornings, why sleep when i could be in the shed. 😁
typethreeking ·
hey aaron, good to hear you will have it going for warwick. Did bec get you motivated after friday night cruise. Remember if you need a hand give me a call..
20bkombi ·
Hi Troy, Great fun on friday night hey!
Wound the boost up in the kombi tonight to 15psi holly crap to fast for the streets. A/F's are still around 10.5/1. (Makes me want to put me helmet on)😂
Heres the rear frame, still needs brace under bellhousing and engine mounts.
Sorry bout the bad light, i'll find my lead light next time.
All the engine/ box suports, manifold wastgate exhaust position intercooler, and minor rust repares have to be finished before it goes to the painters 2-3 weeks?
Building the car is quality time just love hands on.
See when its your wifes car you can stay in the shed as long as you like.😂
Stanley ·
20bkombi wrote:See when its your wifes car you can stay in the shed as long as you like.😂
I tried that with my car considering my wife paid for it. I'm glad it worked for you though....😂
Great work though Aaron. Will be good to see another quick Type 3.
psimitar ·
Nice frame dude. that should solidify things somewhat.🙂
I was wondering too what make of caliper is that on the rear discs? looking into 4 wheel discs at present 😎
typethreeking ·
frame looks cool mate, should stop the twist in the rear of the car, give me a call tonight if you read this..Troy
20bkombi ·
Hi Mike, the rear disks are from a mazda FD S6 RX7 and the calipers are from FC S5 RX7
I just bolted the frame in temporary to make engine mounts and to see where the turbo and gate sit on the cheap manifold.
Alsow put in two 880cc injectors with two 580cc as primaries.
Cool cheers for that. Looks like it'll be VW Golf/Audi A3 calipers up front and maybe Mazda up the rear 🙂
20bkombi ·
Yepeeee finished the frame and the manifold, sorted exhaust and wastgate.
engine in last night and out today to weld the frame and back in tomorrow to mount the PWR barrel cooler, water pipes and pump, oil cooler and fan ect, then all out for paint and auto rebuild (audi 200t parts and stallconverter 2800?)
20bkombi ·
Started some rust repaires tonight
Stanley ·
Good stuff Aaron.
I can see you and Bec on the line together going for best wheelie....😀
Had to laugh Saturday night every time you started the kombi people looking around trying to work out where the rotor noise was coming from and then shaking their heads in disbelief when it was coming from a Kombi.
Glad you were able to drive it home.
20bkombi ·
Unfortunately i can't go larger than arunnd 1500 with the stock converter, to go larger it'll cost 2-2.5k,,,,,, So no wheelies for Bec. He he.
Was a great day on saterday and knight, would have liked to show up some v8 guys, and get a 1/4 time slip. Maybe next time.
The square seems to be going backwards, Theres more rust than i thought, deeper deeper deeper.😂
Now its time to weld!!!
psimitar ·
Get some Waxoyl into all those rusty nocks and crannies. Will kill the rust and protect without having to do the usually clean, cure and seal routine 🙂
Tho don't get it too near the area being welded as it can sometime combust 🥲
typethreeking ·
far out aaron, you have been busy!!!!
20bkombi ·
Thanks for the tips.
Year still big hours at work aswell, but anyway , i had a little help last night from bec, she picks things up fast.
Most the welding is done and i'm looking forward to pulling the auto apart and doing some mods.
Made a template from cardboard by pressing down then tracing the shape to steel then add some shape with a hammer and then weld and grind.
This is the best way i thought as i've never done this befor.
vassy66T1 ·
Great work Aaron and excellent idea on getting the template close first off.
Rust repair done right is really quite satisfying 👍

The 010 auto was in the type 3 for nealy 2 years (198rwhp) 1 hr per day, my usual driving, To my surprise the box was perfict.
Waiting on the new o'rings and pistions, brake band ect.
Alsow the converter.
I've made an electric water pump in - outlet for the engine and made air pump, elec oil feed and polution block off plates.
The new auto will have kombi 010 diff , housing, auto case,010 1st clutch pack (x4 stock),010 modifided oil pump, drive reverse bell and clutches, 2nd gear servo and pistion.
With Audi 200 turbo converter,200t forward bell with Audi 100 clutches x6 (4 stock), remove 8 forward piston springs, alsow 200t valve body and selector system with mods, 010 sump modifided. Kombi inner cv's and type 3 outers.
I have a problem with photo bucket pic's.

Dasdubber ·
Glad to hear you are stoked Bec, I'm doing all I can to push it through as promptly as I can. 14 hour days is the best I can manage at the moment (better than the 20 hour plus days last year leading up to warwick getting the rad bug and the oval ready!).....will shoot through some more pics as progress continues!
Al
PS the paint should come up very nicely after the colour sanding process, its pretty nice off the gun but it will make a world of difference.
typethreeking ·
hey bec, looks good now with some colour, just need to piece it all back together again and what a fun job that is, dont scratch the paint while doing it!!!

hi punks,
well first thing i must say is yes we are fortunate to have alan do our car. We went down to Das resto haus on the weekend we fitted engine and gearbox, fuel and oil lines, pumps, manifolds, turbo, wiring, rear frame, dash and instruments. thanks al for letting us in your workshop, its been a great help.
i got to see my car in colour for the first time, looks fantastic so happy. Now she is called sexy clarabel

Yepee my car is home, aaron spent a whole day on it today, got it going, runs well but needs a total tune (next week) backed out of garage and back in. Exhaust , water pipes, pump, radiator, oil cooler lines, drive shafts, cv's and some wiring all done.
with the stall converter , no extra rpm was acheived 👎
Tomorrow windscreen man coming over. We will start on window mech, door locks and rubbers, thermo fans and intercooler. busy busy little bees we shalll be.
colonel mustard ·
awesome! can't wait to see it 🙂
20bkombi ·
Quick up date, bec and I worked flatout all day today. we had a few set backs, as usual when theres a dead line. But we fitted 2 spal 12'' thermos, barrel cooler (with out water), electric water pump, door windows and stuf.
We bled the cooling system then I got to drive it around the block (no windows front or rear guards or deck lid). feels really good, taking note of tranny, converter turbo and brakes.
We should have all the guards and windows in sun-mon, but don't konw if i have time to get it to the dyno because i'm still doing 12hr days.
It might be another street tune with darter logging.
Neeeed sleeeep!
I'm know i'm not the only one..

your a machine mate!! I dunno how you do it LOL. Unfortunately in my job I have to deal with a hell of a lot of people every day and have to be pleasant and happy which is damm hard when you only get a handfull of hours of sleep and you just simply feel like ripping somebody's head off!! I have to simply "prioritise" which jobs get done first at home starting with keeping the boss happy then slipping out to the shed for 3-4 hours a night till my back tells me enough is enough.....
hope all goes well and you get it to warwick!!
Dasdubber ·
After a big weekend of colour sanding, my involvement in Bec's squareback has drawn to an end for now. I went up to Bec's and Aaron's last night to help get the guards etc back on. Set the camera on self-timer and took a quick snap before I took off....

hi was wondering how to tell if a rotary engine is stuffed or not without pulling it apart. My mate has a series 4(I think) rx7 I can buy for $200. As far as I know the engine does not start. It would be to go in to a notchback. How much did your conversion cost comparitavely to a subaru transplant
13b type 3 ·
hi,
If you can turn it over with a starter motor, use a compression tester. when doing this keep the throttle wide open and take out only 1 leading spark plug,
insert gauge and KEEP FINGER ON THE RELEASE BUTTON. As the motor turns over you will see the needle bounce up, once every revolution. if it moves
3 times in a row and around 70-90 psi the engine is fine.
This will have to be done to the rear rotor housing as well
If the needle is low on one of 3 cycles a side seal is stuck in the rotor or is broken(if this is the case pour 50 ml of oil in the spark plug hole and try starting)
this will help seal any stuck seals and hopfully free them up.
if the needle is low in 2 of the cycles out of the 3 this might mean that apex seals or corner seals are broken(time for rebuild)
if there is no starter motor you can turn it over by hand and use your thumb to feel compression once every revolution again.
with cost would be the same if you have the ecu
and loom
good luck with the engine and its dirt cheap
13b type 3 ·
