tiny oval ·

i think the site for whitewalls is www.antiquetyres.com.au, will be looking at a set my self when i eventually get my car:thumb

sleeper ·

i will get a set of whitewalls but at a later date, for the moment i am just enjoying cruising in the car....at a later date i will do a complete restoration and then the whitewalls will go on....😀

squizy ·

From what I saw of the price on eBay, you got a very good buy.

Well done.

Squiz......

Doug Sweetman ·

Bewdiful !!

sleeper ·

thanks guys....the car looks good in photos and in the flesh also, i am quite tempted to get down to numbacca now just to get to meet some of the members and see some other cars.....

OvalGlen ·

Excellent sleeper,
Mine is a sleeper too.
We could almost start a " Grey Oval " club... good to see.

sleeper ·

well mine isn't quite a sleeper yet as it is still original ,running 6v,original motor/box,semaphores...etc....but eventually it'll get there.....what engine you got in yours?

sleeper ·

ok,
just an update with my oval,
got 12v conversion done.....still a couple of things to be finished as the right park light isn't working and the left semaphore is a bit bugged 🙁
and also got the car lowered 🙂
have ordered a set of chrome 356 replicas that should be here in a few weeks 🙂

XXX-1.8T ·

Hey Sleeper did u get my u2us?

:beer

lardo ·

why would u butcher a fine example VW by doing that, buy a hod rod.😠

sleeper ·

hi xxx 1.8t, i did get your u2u thank you.
lardo, i know it is an original car but i am going towards the californian look as it is what i want.... sorry to offend you by any way, i don't think it is butchering the car by any way .....
thanks for your comment(s)
cheers

PHAT BUG ·

Hey Lardo, by the sounds of it the mods he is doin would be easy enough to put back to standard so you could hardly call him a butcher. Everone should be able to do want they want to their cars without critisizm, after all its THEIR car!

Starbug ·

That is a very beautiful car!
grey is definitely the right colour for any oval!

sleeper ·

phat bug,
thanks for backing me up, you actually said what i wanted but didn't as i didn't to offend anyone, as for mods you are right, it's only rims (356 replicas)with whitewalls, lowered the car a bit, put a hood jak for the summer heat and an antenna, and 12v conversion..... those aren't major mods???? or are they??? i like MY car the way it is and always will...

Q ·

sleeper,

O/T
6.5hrs later and the turbos are off.....

PHAT BUG ·

I wouldn't consider them major mods at all, A major mod would be turning it into a baja, or chopping the roof a coupla inches and who gives a shiat anyway its your car so do what you want with it. I will always admire people you go against the flow a bit! BTW your car will look awesome after the mods are done. Now I better go finish puttin that flip front on my '53 Zwitter.😉

fullnoise ·

Great car.

I love the colour and the interior.

You can modify it without touching the body.

Well done CYA, CT

Doug Sweetman ·

Nope not major mods - very sensible ones.

Rock on !!!

Ovals kick ass 🙂

Craig Torrens ·

How did you convert the 36hp to 12v ?

I did it with a 12v generator, which is the same size as the 6v, I thought these were hard to find ?

As for your mods, I would personally like to see your car restored.
Just try not to do anything you can't reverse ! ( just my opinion)

Its hard to find originals these days😀

sleeper ·

hi craig,
in regards to the conversion, the generator used is a 6v that has been rewired as you said the same size generator in 12v are very hard to find, as for the mods they aren't hard to reverse at all, just lowered.... that is the only major mod on the car as everything else will be restored to original ,inside / out ....
cheers

Grey 57 ·

sleeper, can you tell me a bit more about the 12v conversion on a 6v gennie. I want to put a modified 36hp motor back in the oval one day. But I want to keep the 12v electrics.
What did it cost and is it reliable.
Cheers

Dean
PS hope you are taking it to Valla. Good photo op with my Grey Oval

XXX-1.8T ·

Sleeper dont worry what people say ur mods are very reasonable and reversable too.

If u need any parts contact the guys which i sent u via u2u they can get anything for u

:beer

Doug Sweetman ·

a curiosity question - does anyone know of beetles in oz getting around with hottie 1200's in them ? I know in the states there are beetles with the okrasa kits and judsons, but havent seen much of that over here - did we not get okrasa ?

sleeper ·

hi doug,
are you talking about supercharger? judson are around $ 1000 i believe ... so i've been told but never heard of okrasa... i wouldn't mind supercharging mine.... lol

PHAT BUG ·

My dad had a 1200 Okrasa motor in his beetle back in the 60s, and dont I wish he still had it now!

oval TOFU ·

hey sleeper... nice ride mate.. i noticed the oil sling marks on the underside of youyr decklid... my 54 did that too after i drove 80 mins from the counrty back to Melbourne, sitting on 80 kph in a 110 zone on a 30+degree day so i wouldn't fry the engine! I got a 1200 in it but its the 40hp version... so i'll whip your @$$ in a drag wouldn't I!? haha... geez we are so slow.... what are you doing about your running gear then?

Cheers

tofu - tastes like..... chicken

sleeper ·

grey 57,
i won't be able to go to valla 🙁 ... as far as 12v conversion, generator has been rewinded in 12v with a 12v regulator, change all bulbs, battery and as far as the rest still 6v gear (wiper, semaphores, horn.... etc) just added some resistance of .75 ohm to run those accesories.... cost of conversion was around $500

oval tofu,
maybe down hill i might have a chance to beat you if i strip the trim and the doors and the lids.... lol

oval TOFU ·

I dunno man... i'm kinda skinny! I've better power to weight!

$500? Is that for the rewiring of the generator, regulator, bulbs and battery and labour?

how much just for getting the gennie redone and a new regulator?

And how much was getting your car lowered? I've got a 54 in Beryl Green that i want/need a bit lower too... pretty much totally stock except for the 40hp engine and 225/60/15's on the back on 7" rims... just a little too wide for the guards, i havent had any probs with scraping yet coz i dont carry anyone/thing in the back... looks good too....

So you still running the 36hp out the back end? I'm thinking of getting a 1600 stocker just to keep up with traffic
Maybe later get a worked 36hp with twin carbs, balanced and counterweighted crank etc.... much much furthur down the track....

tofu or not tofu... that is the question...

sleeper ·

here is an update of the oval with a few accessories...
WCM gravel guards....

sleeper ·

eye lids.....

sleeper ·

bullet type indicators....

sleeper ·

those are just a few bits that i've done since i bought the car...still waiting for the front gravel guards ,they should be here sometime this week on next.
next on the list is mudflaps,underdash tray,roof rack,ragtop,empi 5.....
will keep you all updated...
cheers
