I had a compression test done on my '64 and the mechanic tells me that I am down in compression in one cylinder due to a crack in the head,
Eventually I will need a new head(s)
what are the options for these, can you buy brand new 1200 heads? What sort of cost would I be looking at?
I want to stick with the stock motor,
Or would I be better of buying from somewhere a reconditioned 1200 motor?
Does anyone know what sort of costs a reconditioned 1200 motor would cost?

you can buy new single port heads, would be chaeper than overhauling the ones you have, otherwise you could always put an advert in the for sale section and see if anyone has some 2nd hand heads.
i think the later twin port heads are around the $250 mark complete so im guessing a similar price for single port heads.
cant give a rebuild price as i dont know, but depends on your mileage
hope that helps
I doubt the compression is down due to a cracked head..............probably a loose head/burnt valve/or riding tappet.

I recently priced some 1200 heads - Jax Heads in NSW (advert in the VW mag) has reconditioned 1200 heads for $210 exhange (or close to that)
I got hold of 6 heads all were supposed to be okay but when I had them pressure tests they were all crap - I ended up finding a decent head, but it cost me $200 (I was getting desperate) and after I installed it I found out about Jax.
At least I will know in future, but I would say give them a call.
