zjm 路

I have to say it. headlight eyebrows just look very ordinary and vws dont need any thing to make their headlights worse
there is a factory in taiwan cranking these things out and it has to stop asap in the name of good taste

I feel better now

I think Ill go and have a good lie down

Mountains Greg 路

Ok in the name of good taste I will remove the abovementioned offending items from my bug 馃槀

What about the safety issues with sharp things like these slicing into pedesperates.

DH

bajachris88 路

yea, for the issues of having a lack of safety and good taste they will have to upgrade to sharp 6 inch barbs/spikes welded across the bumper instead.

Now that would be sick! 馃槒

I LIKE EYEBROWS/EYELIDS!!!! BUT in saying that, i just removed the ones off my car to improve how it looks and have got to say it REALLY improved the look... so i really cant talk ahahaha馃槀馃槀

RED62E 路

Get nicked. Just my opinion.

Turbo54 路

This is why the world is so enjoyable. I personally like them.. stuff the safety issues. My 54 doesn't have seatbelts either.
If we all had the same ideas, tastes and thoughts the world would be very boring!

RED62E 路

Safety issues??
They are rounded on the ends and have NO protruding sharp edges unlike my bumper bar.
I think the handle on the bonnet would cause more damage so mine are staying.
Whadaday
Each to their own though.
Got a great big fibre glass kit with front bumper spoiler. rear wing and flared guards to come when I get em ready.
More for people NOT to like. Lucky it's only me driving it.馃槝馃槀馃槝馃槀

I'm sure pedestrians getting hit are gunna be pretty f@#$ed up with or without eyebrows attached!
Or a bull bar

1303Steve 路

Hi

I don't like them, they looked cool years ago when they were rare, now there are thousands of Chinese ones around they have lost their style.

But each to their own, I do things to bugs that other people find distasteful, but they are my bugs.

We don't want the VW style police to get started on these things, we would all drive the same looking car then.

I personally have an issue with their safety
If the RTA had to make a ruling on them I think they would be outlawed
I would also hate for my insurance company to see them

this is the RTA's opinion on protrusions they really only applies to bull bars and aerials

Protrusions on vehicles
Some vehicles are fitted with badly designed bull bars with pointed corners and sharp edges, and some are fitted with accessories which protrude beyond the bumper bar or bull bar.

Protrusions and some methods of attachment to the front of vehicles present a danger to other road users and increase the likelihood of injury or damage to a person or another vehicle making contact with the vehicle. An accessory or bull bar fitted to a vehicle must therefore be attached in a manner that does not affect the continuing compliance of the vehicle with the Australian Design Rules and Regulations.

This information covers only the roadworthiness requirements for equipment fitted to the front of vehicles. These roadworthiness requirements and the relevant construction safety standards will be reviewed after Standards Australia completes a proposed Australian Standard on bull bars.

Fitting of accessories

Of particular concern are the ways in which items protruding forward of the bumper or bull bar are fitted eg. accessory fittings attached to the exterior of a vehicle such as brackets supporting aerials and lights.

Also of concern are bull bars that have sharp edges and pointed corners or bull bars fitted with accessory attachments such as fishing rod holders, lights and mounting brackets for such fittings, and any fittings that affect the field of view of the driver.

For safety reasons it is illegal to have:

Any attachment or protrusion projecting forward of bull bar or bumper bar which presents a danger to other road users.
Note that any aerials or winches which cannot meet this requirement should be removed after the operational need is completed. Emergency and rescue (State Rescue Board-accredited rescue vehicles, mines rescue) vehicles may have a constant operational need for this equipment and will not be rejected. Minor protrusions forward of the bull bar or bumper bar such as a spotlight, or fairleads required for the operation of a winch, where the mounting brackets do not protrude, are permitted providing the protrusion is the minimum necessary and is blunt or protected to minimise any risk of injury to vulnerable road users.
Any sharp or ragged edge or corner on a bull bar which could cause injury to a person coming into contact with the bull bar.
Any bull bar or other attachment that does not allow the driver a view of the road and of the traffic to the front and side of the vehicle so that the driver can drive the vehicle safely.
The RTA has issued Vehicle Inspector's Bulletin No. 5 to Inspectors and Authorised Examiners explaining the inspection requirements to them. For further information on protrusions to the front of vehicles, please contact RTA Technical Enquiries on 1300 137 302.

theyre already classed as illegal and yes u can booked for them, but not many ppl do, just advised to remove them

there are proper ones for late model headlights that fit properly, look ok and dont cover half the headlight up but noone seems to fit them only the ones designed to fit early bugs which look like shit on late model upright headlights

whatnow 路

zjm wrote:vws dont need any thing to make their headlights worse
i think that these were actually designed to improve 6V headlights by reflecting more light down where you need it.

that said they were made illegal in germany back in the day as they were slicing up too many pedestrians, plus i have never liked the look.

it is the diversity that makes the hobby so i won't tell you to your face that they make your car look a bit gay. 馃檪

13bwagon 路

yup i hate them
i have two new sets if anyone ways one

alien8 路

Legal or not I don't mind them at all. The new Taiwan and Chinese one are pretty horrid though. But most dress up stuff from there is.
Here's and older set of thigh slicers.

Baja Wes 路

They probaby cause a very slight drop in fuel economy too

Joel 路

Brad, yours are atleast the proper ones designed for 12volt headlights not the old 6volt style that cover up half the headlight and make bugs and kombis look totally stoned

people really add insult to injury when they angle them for the angry/sad look

The newer style ones look pretty crap on the earlier beetles to, all pointed upwards. These were an absolute bitch to fit. I swear it took half a day to fit them. If I knew they were going to be so hard I would of told the missus to get stuffed. But hey, I am a softy!

What about Cat's eye's Yay or nay?

I say nay.

helbus 路

Can you have cats eyes and eye brows?

helbus 路

I just ran and had a look at our cat and he does have eyebrows

vw54 路

get he origional german ones there BRASS not china shit n they looks great hd them for years both cars

trickysimon 路

I say yay to cats eyes 馃憤

jenz58 路

I love my Bel's eyebrows, they add to her personality and were part of the reason I fell in love with her when I first saw her parked by the road with a for sale sign xoxo

Someone would have to be getting up too close and personal to your ride for them to be a safety hazard馃檨

MISS VDUB 路

I love them, but hate them on late model beetles!

mscabrio 路

A face would look just wrong without eyebrows!! I have eyebrows on my 57 bug and my 74 bug and am looking for a pair for my NB.

There are many modifications that I dont particulary like but I don't go saying how much I hate them!

colonel mustard 路

cats eyebrows.... i laughed

sgetty 路

ihad them and like the look of them but took them off because i couldnt get a good seal with them on, started taking in water. yeah they are sharp too only takes one tool to play with them in a car park to cut themselfs

65busser 路

I believe they were introduced to keep the headlights clear of snow and subsequent icing up of the glass when the car's parked. So unless you're expecting snow or they're the real thing on a pre 68 beetle, I'm with you zjm, there's no excuse. 馃憥

mengyou 路

Hey guys, dumb question: why are they called eyebrows.........they look more like protruding eyelids.

Pardon my ignorance!

68AutoBug 路

Once a pedestrian gets hit by a beetle with eyebrows and cuts his/her leg off or even worse..
they will come to the attention of the safety people and insurance companies....

I'm not saying they look terrible etc... just dangerous...

dAVo 路

I kinda think VWs look a little plain without them.

I'd also like to see someone provide evidence of past incidents where someone's leg was actually severed by these. A pedestrian being hit by a VW (or any car for that matter) will be in a whole world of hurt. With or without the lids fitted.

bajachris88 路

if i remember the one in happy gilmore, that veedub that hit adam sandler did look like a whole 'enflictment' (my own words here... :P) of pain....

but that didn't have eyebrows though... i don' think.... did it?

Joel 路

you cant relate a movie scene crash to anything realistic 馃槀
as it was in that small scene that bug changes models 3 times from 70 standard to a superbeetle to a mid 70s fuel injected bug
not to mention the tyre tracks on the grass you can see from previous takes

Mountains Greg 路

Did'nt quite stop the snow covering my headlights on this day though 馃槑 I've had these eyebrows for about 20 yrs and they have the rolled edges... So no nasty sharp edges protruding... On old cars like ours though they were never designed for pedestrian safety... Even my rego plate has sharp edges!

jenz58 路

mengyou wrote:Hey guys, dumb question: why are they called eyebrows.........they look more like protruding eyelids.

Before I became aware of their true name I used to call Bel's her eyelashes...probably why I decided she was a pretty girl dub馃槝

...protruding eyelids is a good one...more like a cartoon character look

This has become a hot topic

Come on Lee how about that fact that the bumper bar has most likely already shattered the shin and knee of the dumbass pedestrian!
I like them, but I don't have them on my car. Wouldn't suit it.

raydon26 路

Omg, you'd need some seriously heavy duty wax to remove those suckers. 馃榿
