I have noticed a slight issue with the advance on both the old 009 and the new Single vac dizzys I had installed.
When timed to 7.5 BTDC at idol they both advance to 24 BTDC at 3000rpm. With the vac connected the svda advances to about 30 BTDC.
If I set the advance at 30 BTDC with the vac pluged it falls to about 15 BTDC at idol. Same with the 009. Is this typical with the cheaper repo dizzys or is there somthing else going on?
Points gaped to .15mm or .006". Dwell reads 50.

sorry... its "idle". not being rude. it just annoyed me. :P

Like as in Australian Idle.
Sorry mate, can't spell for shizz🙂
colonel mustard ·
ha. you have them totally the wrong way around. nice.

Alien8,
Sad lack of quality in both by your description. Check 'em at 3500rpm just as you've described for both distributors.
If nothing changes, IMHO I'd go looking for something better.

Damn! Yep checked them above 3000rpm. Sadly no more advance .It runs better when set to 7.5 BTDC. Just a little puzzled at the lack of advance overall.

Brad thats pretty much bang on spec
with stock vac dissys u should be able to static time them to 7.5 and they should be all in at 30-32 by about 3000RPM
thats with the vac connected
typically 009s will when strobed to 30ish tend to sit around 10-15 at idle
point gap is actually sposed to be 16thou or 0.4mm

Cool mate, I thought that a 009 should advance 28-32 when set at 7.5 when all thing are good and newish. But I feel much better now you have said that .
Don't know where I pulled 0.15mm from.
Joel ·
depending who u talk to 0.15mm/6thou is valve gaps
definately for single port heads but twin port heads ive always done them at 0.10mm/4thou

Ahh yes thats it.
i had a mini heart attack just then.Thought I set the points to .15mm. But the dwell is 50 degrees. Must of got it right!
I am feeling a little dyslexic lately.🤪
alien8 ·
Hey Joel , whats the benefit of the .10mm instead?
Joel ·
gets rid of the sewing machine sound effect.... well as best u can with a vw engine
dont try it with older heads they need 0.15mm and the real early ones are 0.20mm on the zorst valves
but 0.10mm is fine on twinport heads
my old boss told me that one and i trust him, he was head of the service department of the vw dealership here for 20 odd years
plus my original 1600 engine ive run that gap for 11 years now and its still going fine not to mention all the other engines
ive tried 0.15mm with it before and they sound like an eggbeater
Anthiron ·
so is idle advance the same as static advance with the engine off? forgive me, i dont know how to use a strobe light.
Joel ·
if the springs are within spec then yes,
with a vac advance you shouldnt need to strobe them just time to 7.5* or whatever your engine needs, some are 5* etc
009 are totally different kettle of fish tho cos the quality is so hit and miss, only way to be sure they wont nuke ur engine is check that there maxing out 30* and let static timing fall whereever which is "usually" around 10-15*
Anthiron ·
i have a 009 and i time it at 7.5 btdc......should i advance that a little? i have a strobe light i just dont know how to use it. is it hard?

Yeah I advanced my old 009 to 30 BTDC at 3000rpm. Like Joel said just let it fall to where ever it may at idle.
Strobe light is easy as . Hook it up to + and - and clip it onto plug lead 1, point and shoot. Turn dizzy to adjust.
Joel ·
have u got a degreed crank pulley nick?
makes life alot easier but you can measure around from the TDC dimple on a stock pulley to get 30*
Anthiron ·
not on the engine in my baja no. its a stock pulley, i do have one on another engine maybe i should swap them.
Joel ·
if you can get the bolts undone and the pulleys off i'd go for it
they can be tight little buggers and real stubborn if you dont have a puller, especially on a baja engine thats been abit more exposed to the elements
but they make timing heaps easier and even setting the valve gaps finding 2 and 4 TDC without having to watch the valves
