Hey triker, I just replaced a set of Empi HPMX's off a 1915 Oztrike up here in Cooroy. They had tuning issues and would be really hard to start, especially after sitting for a while. The carbs are the problem with some manufacturing issues, some can be sorted, some can't. Where are you located?

Go and talk to Adrian at Powertune on Victoria Rd Gladesville (Syd). He's spent a few months figuring out how to make them work properly. Apparently he's had success but they need a bit of work done on them.

...at $80 an hour or whatever, these 'bargain buy' Empis would soon become expensive...?

as they say, you get what you pay for. plenty of issues with the north american webers. you can still buy the real thing, made in italy/spain.

I had the same problem with my italian webers, They were 40 idf but i think we went down 1 size on the main jets. Best to get it on the dyno if you have one near you. That way you will know exactly what its doing. I did it and have never looked back. If you are in brisbane take it to leons motors at salisbury, he has a dyno.
