What engine?

Hi,
I am still working on my Beetle, which i believe is a 72 Model. I thought it had a 1600 motor, but some of the parts i have replaced, notably the clutch, rotor and dizzy are apparently "older" parts, something like '69. The guy at the VW shop says it could be a 1300. I have attached a few pics with engine numbers on them and am hoping someone could help me out with this!?

Some more..

Number under the generator - AS177305

Thanks.

Joshua.

whatever it is, the case has seen a lot of miles and is cracked.

well it started out life as a 1600 twinport from a 75ish Lbug or Kombi but it couldbe anything now but i doubt its smaller

like craig said case has probabbly seen better days especially with welding like that so close to the main bearing seats

Well the Kombi thing makes sense as it has an external oil filter on it. The only one that looks the same as the old one also fits the Kombi (according to the handy Ryco book at supercheap...).

The engne ran ok when i bought it and it looks as if some engine components are newish. will this repair to the block affect the engine?

Hi again,

After the info about possible cracked case, i had a search for info and stubled upon this extract

See the last 2 columns on page 77 and images on the bottom of p78. This seems to descibe the plate welded adjacent to the flywheel on my engine.
This means either, 1) Engine cracked and repaired. 2) Modification added for extra strength. 3) Same as 2, and bored out.

There also seems to be an application of resin/epoxy on the case in the same are. I assume this may have been a crack...?

Anyways, apart from pulling the engine apart, is their any way one can tell whether the engine has been bored out, cracked or otherwise?

thanks for the great help.

As Joel said, an 'AS' engine number is a 1600cc 50-bhp (DIN) engine, made from 1973-on. They were originally fitted to both Type 1 and Type 2 VWs. BTW, 1600 Kombis did NOT have oil filters - the one you mentioned in the Ryco catalogue would have been for a 1700-1800-2000cc engine (Type 4), which is a different thing. However it is a straight-forward thing to fit an aftermarket kit to a Type 1 engine.

1300 and 1600 cc engines have the same crankshaft (69mm stroke), so the difference is in the size of the cylinders. The 1300 motor has 77mm pistons and cylinders, and the 1600 has 85.5mm. Really the only way to be sure is to pull the heads off and measure the inside diameter of the cylinders. There's no real way to be sure otherwise as you can't tell the inside diameter from the outside.

Most VW workshops now do not recommend welding a cracked case. For a tired onld engine like this, a fresh rebuild would use a brand new case. Using epoxy is as dodgy as.

a 177 AS block would be from about apr-june 75
i highly doubt its from a kombi tho
very few kombis after 73 had 1600 type1 engines
it was mainly single cabs that did for some reason but the way to tell would be it will be tapped for a kombi engine cradle

if the engine runs fine just roll with, as they say if its not broke.....
