wow unreal stuff mate
great score now you will have to come to the dark side ... the t1 side 🙂
typethreeking ·
the engine in my fastback will part company once the rest of the car is finished and then its time for racing
dangerous ·
WOW!
Scrubs up pretty good dude.
No more toad skeletons found in there?
typethreeking ·
i think i will get brennden to hit it with the buff, heaps of crap and over spray on there but should come off. The tin work inside cleans up well, just need some longer self tappers to fix that rear panel in place. i did fine a few hornets nest in there !!!

Can't wait to see it going dude! Nice buy...

Certainly does, looks like someone has painted over dirt though 🙂 hehehe
That thing must weight half of what the fatty-fat-fat fastback hey Troy?!
Al
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
You'd prolly be pretty close there Al. Dangerous how much did it weigh taking into account the extra weight of the autorotors etc etc?
HGFS ·
Wow that looks cool. I think you should change those rear boots though for some wider ones just to make sure you have enough traction!!!
Doesn't look like there is too much to finish it off, will be awesome when its on the track.
You would be well into the tens with this wouldn't you?
dangerous ·
Those tyres are 11.5" tread by 28" tall.
13" across the side wall on 10" rims.
typethreeking ·
yeah dave its not till you see them up close to get a idea of how big they really are. Yes greg iwould be happy to run into the tens once the car is sorted!!
polak ·
looks wicked man, great score!! cant wait to see it out on the track. good work.👍
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
How's the new garage handling the wet weather?? Everything high and dry??
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Troy informs me today that a front beam has been sourced and will be narrowed and refurbished with new bushes etc etc. spindle mount front wheels have also been sourced and my uncle is possibly going to his place tonight to look at front end to engineer mounts for beam as well as mounts for tilt nose, fuel tank, battery etc etc. A sponsor has already been acquired to paint the car and get the body all in order as well. Family is getting behind the car with plenty of support and offers to help out!!
typethreeking ·
had a look tonight with my uncle from volks engineering to see what we will do with the front end. We will start taking measuring things over the next few days and order some steel to start making a frame head so we can bolt the beam onto it. Not sure if we will use the torsion bars or go to a coil over shock...
typethreeking ·
i had the steel tube delivered today so hopefully over the next week or so i can get some time to start making the new front for the car. Heap of things to consider with this before actaully welding it together but looking fowardto the finished item..
Sides ·
Wow Troy - looks awesome, and things seem to be moving pretty quickly.... is this a "hopefully for Warwick" sort of thing ???
dangerous ·
I have tried to track down some picturesof how it was.
This one shows the rack mount,
but the short tie rod had unsatisfactory bump steer.
So a single anchor point on the rack was made with long tie rods.
This was after the crash, but you get the idea.
The unusual thing about bump steer with the VW style beam front,
is that the tierods are best following the same arc as the trailing arms.
For this reason, the short side of a VW steering assembly actually is beter than the long side.
Also, the installed height of the beam, and the staic angle of the trailing arms,
decides wether the rack is mounted low or high.
As and example,
on an off road deal the rack is normally mounted on the top tube.
But on my old set-up,
optimum would have been to mount the rack low.
But unfortunately by the time I worked that out, I already had the beam, rack and fuel tank mounted.
Plus the master cylinder and other stuff would have interfered with the tie rods or rack.
The end result was pretty good though.
less than 3mm toe change over 6" of tavel.
Stock VW is horrible if you ever check yours with a lowered beam.
thanks for the pics and links dave, good to be able to see how it was before, will be some what different this time i think if things go to plan

i have just started to get some measurement and ideas with this beam donated by peter page(thanks mate). I want to run the top bars flat across the feet area giving more room. I will get the beam narrowing 4 inches and start bending some bars and get ready for some welding.
VWFREAK ·
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, great to see the Drag Scene is gaining momentum 👍

if you need a new narrowed beam PM me... im pretty sure its 6 inch narrowed, have to check for sure.

awesome stuff. great to see that car back on deck again. are you keeping the dedion rearend?
typethreeking ·
yeah mostly likely, dave has already made changes to it after it crashed s it should now handle better but time will tell
dangerous ·
pete wood wrote:awesome stuff. great to see that car back on deck again. are you keeping the dedion rearend?
The rear suspension is no longer DeDeon.
If you look at the pictures you will see that the dropped axle is no longer connected together from each side.
It now has heim joints mounted to the chassis under the CV joint location.
This effetively makes it an independant suspension with a swingaxle wheel travel.
The best thing about this style of swingaxle,
is the camber can be adjusted with the lower heim joint,
and the roll centre is not high like a conventional swingaxle car.
As long as the mountng points are strong(just tacked in at the moment),
and the car is properly wheel aligned,
this car will run nice and straight.
westi ·
$500 side to side.
includes everything.
shocks .steering shaft, steering arms and brand new steering box. even the ali front end bracket.pagey is getting the spindle and king pins, but he might not want them,so i will leave that up to pagey, but i know he atleast wanted to get some measurements off it.
let me know.i checked today it won't fit in the car for the dyno day ,not with a car load of travellers,so we will have to organize something else.
will talk soon.

Don't know if that would be cool though! Maybe thats all you'll end up with after spending all your cashola on the racecar if your wife finds out what it really costs to go racing!

Just read through this thread and some of the oothers related to this car and its awesome!
What specs/rules/sanctioning body do you guys have to work to for things like this chassis over in Aus?
typethreeking ·
andra( australian national drag racing association) is who makes the rules for drag racing in australia. The engine that is in my fastback will end up in the tube chassis car at a later date
typethreeking ·
now that warwick is out of the way for another year, its time to start get into the tube chassis car, need to chase up westi to send the front end up to me and will go and see trevor i think at custom exhaust to bend up some bar work and weld up the front of the chassis. Will also have to chase around for some front wheels as well so if anyone knows of some spindle mount wheels to suit strange strut so i can fit front brakes let me know...
humpty ·
Good to see the tube car is coming back on stream....
colonel mustard ·
Troy, put out a "anyone driving to brisbane from sydney with a trailer" call... its the best way 🙂
typethreeking ·
its ok, i had a courier pick the front end up today from westi and sending it to my work. Will be getting my new wheels in a fortnight then taking the car to get the front of the chassis welded on so with any luck the car will be back on its wheels in a few weeks or so. I will post some pics when i get the new bits

while ive got the engine out i might as well get these things done, i have to buy a new bigger turbo anyway so thought might as well get all this stuff sorted now, i had planned on pulling the engine down anyway to check it so no big deal. As much as i would like it running asap it wont happen so might take a bit more time and get it all finished.

typethreeking wrote:
l no your running it on meth, but why have you chopped so much out of the floor , even though its turbo charged aswell you still need some kind of flow to help make the power, other wise your gona need a bit shot of gas to get it going, and your already tight with money
pigman ·
l got a bigger turbo if you wana buy it troy good for 650-700 hp
typethreeking ·
dont worry it wont need gas, the exhaust port is valve size and flow will be fine, what turbo you selling??
pigman ·
its the same size as a 35/40 but plain bearing has a 1.0 rear housing t04 and flow does matter even more so in a smaller engine it helps with spool time but so do alot of other things

how is this thing going troy have you come to a hault again
venFun10 ·
will this be ready for warwick?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Progress is a lil slow atm. I think the fundage tree is receiving a bit of fertiliser to grow some more moolah.
Next job is steering which my uncle is going to do. He's busy atm so Troy has to wait till he has room in the shed for his car. Going rack and pinion and he's also doing all the steering arms etc etc as well.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Here's a pic of the new heads with the inlets ported. Some welding will be done to manifolds as once they are match ported the sealing surface will be very thin. Running big boost a decent sealing area will be needed!!
humpty ·
Fark! 👍👍👍
Sides ·
Noice !!!
Maybe a dumb question, but is it possible to O-ring or copper gasket 'em like on say throttlebodies to manifolds... or are the temps too high for that to work ???
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Not enough surface area Dave to o ring as it's too thin. On one corner of the manifolds it needs welding up to at least get some sort of decent sealing surface to hold 30psi of boost pressure.
Sides ·
Right, oK - cheers Brennden.
30lb of boost... holy cr@p !!!
🥷
westi ·
why only 30psi r u guy's scared or something.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well that is a question Troy can answer but i guess by only running 30 psi it might give you a chance of keeping up for the first 100 feet or so lol
Message me if you need accomodation for Warwick. Booking stuff this week.
STOCK ·
big talk brennden you and troy better be able to back it up buddy
the junkas coming back bigger and better
i'll call you or troy tonight about accomodation mate
talk soon

manifold matched ported to heads

chamber deshrouded around the valves ready for flow bench
typethreeking ·
Steering rack mounted in place, just have to finish off welding
typethreeking ·
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
How did the heads go on the flow bench? Got some figures?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Ok the heads will flow 181.9hp aspirated. This is just a theoretical calculation and there are a lot of factors that could change the figure. So with 30psi it makes 460 atw. Troy.
dangerous ·
That number 181.9 is at .600" with the plenums on top.
With just IDA manifolds, they flow 195.64 @.650".
typethreeking ·
typethreeking ·
new turbo has been ordered, it a GT42. Compressor wheel is 74.80 x 102.40 and exhaust is 75.35 x 81.70. Should make some good HP with that!!
typethreeking ·
typethreeking ·
Engine build starts in a few weeks, starting to make some progress. Just have to finish off the steering set up and start the tin work around the front, put the engine in and look at getting the new exhaust made for the new turbo.

Pretty sure rings are total seal from memory.
Troy isn't cutting any corners in converting this thing to a race engine. Near enough isn't good enough and he is making sure this thing is Built tough. Running 30psi of boost you don't use cheap crap as you know it'll come back to bite you in a big way!!

Looking good Troy - I know these sorts of builds have a timeline of "its finished when its finished ($/time)" status....but any goals for completion? Sydney or Warwick 2013 maybe? Gotta have a goal I guess 🙂
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Al I think his goal is Warwick this year all going well with finance and no unforeseen hiccups or holdups. But if it doesn't make it then Sydney 2013 for sure.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Here's a few pics I took today of the car as it stands progress wise. It will be off the Westside customs in the next couple of weeks for some fabrication work and a few other jobs which Troy doesn't possess the tools to be able to complete.

type4turbo ·
Very nice job Troy.
What pistons are you using? I have not seen forged with such big chambers.... Very good for high boost. Was also looking for some (off the shelf) pistons with big dishes, when I rebuilt my turbo engine. (It makes the pistons very strong in the ring land area, as it protects the rings against detonation. It takes most of the combustion away from your rings and ring lands). The top ring that sits a bit low (away from the piston crown) is also a good idea when using high boost. (like on your pistons).
Very nice.....
Hermann.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Pistons are CP. Troy can Fill you in on the other details of rings etc etc.
BeetleJuice ·
That looks fabulous!😎
Sides ·
Good to see the progress Troy !!!
Headlights on the front clip look different somehow... are they projecting further out from the guard than usual ???
I kinda like the stretched look that it's gotten... and combined with the rubber on the back it looks seriously baddass IMHO.
👍
typethreeking ·
Hermann, yes they are cp pistons with total seal rings. The deep dish is around I think 40cc so will work well with high boost. Sides, the front clip is a mould from Dave stoker I think and it needs some fiberglass work as the guards have some odd shapes making the wheels look further forward then they are.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
After looking at pics again it does make the front look kinda stretched especially with the angle I took the pics. Front does need work as it does fit where it touches in some spots and it will need a fair make over to get it fit nicely.
Yep Dave it is going to be badass. Trust me on that one. Troy is looking forward to some seat time!!!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Troy weighed the car at wsid on he weekend and from memory it weighs as it sits at 538kg which is pretty light considering the cage is steel no cromoly!! Once westi is finished doing some more work it'll prolly weigh in around the 600kg mark so with the hp Troy is wanting out of it this thing should be pretty damn quick!!

That's a fantastic intake runner-but I am amazed you ended up with such a large diameter tube after the join of the 2 smaller ones.I think I can see some marks from some type of swaging machine.I thought the ally would split when stretched that far.Well done. Some very neat welding there as well.

Have you guys not seen Westi saying to make it the same as a good merged exhaust BUT opposite
Sooo 1 into 2.......then Into 4
It's Nice to get an update Troy
fish26 ·
Yeah I know the theory behind it and I'm not saying its wrong as I've got my own opinion regarding both designs.
Westi knows his shit so I guess the combination of running boost over 14psi and the slamming of the valve shut creates enough turbulence to prevent wetting of the inlet manifold walls?
Should be a fun ride.........

Man that's a cool sounding Vw.
Quick fudge of the tune, now it idles and you can give it a few revs on pump fuel.
That should help you with any teething issues before the dyno.
humpty ·
Any updates Troy?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Engine is apart at dangerous' workshop. Cam will need replacing as do lifters. Both have severe enough pitting and corosion that they cannot be used. Everything else needs a thorough clean, some parts a bead blast to remove surface rust then put it all back together. Cam grind will be different from what Troy tells me.
humpty ·
Good news.... Sydney is likely then? Awesome stuff!!!!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Humpty how long did it take for the stuff you ordered off dlx-fe to get here? Few things Troy is looking at ATM.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well its been a long time coming but the car is off to the dyno tomorrow at long last!! Fingers crossed it'll play the game and everything will be sweet. That happening Troy has only a couple of small things to do before getting it tech inspected and then its off to the track!! Will let you know how it all goes down....
modnrod ·
WOW!!!
Cool! 👍
reub ·
Best of luck on the dyno!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
First time with this car to the dyno Troy achieved a fairly good point to start from. Apart from a few hiccups like a couple of minor oil weeps, manifold gasket needed replacing and then a rocker cover come loose and exhaust gasket failure it was pretty good. Day ended after we fixed rocker cover issue and exhaust gasket issue and engine cooled right down and a couple of valve clearances closed up so we called it a day.
Got the base map relatively sorted. Idle and mixtures with no boost pretty good. Made about 100hp atw at 3k with no boost. Tuner made some changes and got it ready to do a power run with boost and away it went!! He run it to 5750rpm and with just under 14psi it made 252.5hp atw. He was checking afr's with boost so rolled off the power at 5750rpm. Limiter is set at 7600rpm. No real timing changes made and afr's are still not where tuners wants them to be. Wants it to be a bit fatter. Engine sounds awesome and very different to most turbo air cooled VW's out there. Starts making boost about 32-3500rpm and by 4500rpm its on song and rearing to go!! Tuner is very confident there is a lot more in it with more time spent on afr's and then timing changes and obviously more boost. Troy is going to drop oil, remove rocker gear and inspect, retention heads and a few other minor adjustments then its back on the rollers to finish what was started today.started today. Big thanks to Rod Richardson for towing the car to the dyno and back home and Dave Richardson for helping out where needed, organising lunch and keeping the tuner entertained with his cameras and filming lol. All in all a good day and a few steps closer to getting on the track. 6 odd hours in the dyno room has taken its toll on my eyes and a headache of sorts and after a shower still can smell sweet sweet methanol on me hahahahahaha

Went to the dyno last night and got the tune sorted at last. Big thanks to Peter Page,Dave Richardson and Tim from custom efi and auto electrical for the dyno time and tune.
Bring on Warwick!!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Been a while between posts here and Troy has now run 3 meets in the car and collected a fair bit of data and made some changes to get the thing running sweet. 1st meet at Warwick last year car ran great off the trailer and ran as fast as 112mph running deep into the mid 6's over the 1/8. Second meet at Warwick in February Troy went a lil quicker again running 6.54@111mph. Made a few lil changes and saw some more improvements. Last outing was at Willowbank in April running the 1/8 mile series. Few more tuning changes and a new on pb of 6.34@111mph. Best 60' is now down into the mid 1.4's with just driving it off the line. One of troys mates also gave the car a coat of paint so it's now all the one colour as well.
Engine is coming out of the car shortly for a cam and lifter change, new pauter barrels, new valves and installation of clutch management set up and also Ecu upgrade and get the 2 step sorted as well. Hopefully all will be ready in time for Warwick in October.
