DrLaban 路

Greetings from Norway 馃檪

Just registered here. Looking forward to see what you guys are doing to your aircooled rides in Australia.

Here's som pictures of my ongoing project which will be on the road in a week or two.

Total rebuild the last two years. FLAT savannah beige. Full air suspension modified to lay the whole car physically on the ground. 4,5x15 in front and 8"15 widen steelies rear. Shaved doors. Bronze colored windows all the way around (incl. windshield)
Custom bumpers and exhaust. Bumpers will be flatt white as the wheels. +++++++

Bumper under construction. The WHOLE bumper will be flat white so don't mind the red details on the US-bars.

That's my AshPod 馃槈 I have installed an iPod in the ashtray that is the only sound source in the car. Direct connected to a 6-channel amp under the hood.
When I close the tray you're not able to see that the car got a sound system at all.
the woofers are hidden behind the rearseat and I have also made a custom wall under the dash where the front system is hidden.

The whole car is silenced with FatMat.

DrLaban 路

The only place where the paint is NOT flat, is the chassi. Kinda funny 馃榾 500+ hours of work before I even started working on the body. And I did not have any rust repairs at all. 馃槈

A picture from the build up..

I just soiled my trousers...馃槉

bugking 路

Again WOW, that is just cool. I've never seen that style before, it's inspirational. And the negative camber with those wheels!

and good to see AC/DC has made it to Norway

DrLaban 路

colonel mustard wrote:looks sick. engine / box details!! more pics!!!!!! what exhaust is that? looks amazing
It's a SEBRING exhaust, but I have changed the tailpipes to 2,5" and opened it more. A deeeep og pretty loud sound in it.

The engine is still the original one. 1200ccm 34hk 馃檪
The plan was to build a powerful engine next winter, but I've just got my hands in a 1965 microbus deluxe, so I'm not so sure anymore.

cesiumfrog wrote:wow....very nice! love those little details. well done.
I love details. And when I post the final pics you'll see more of them.

I always try to build something "new". I'm tired of all the cars with the same old look/story. My motto is "DARE TO BE DIFFERENT"!

I love old rods and I wanted to mix the rod style with the resto style. There you got the project name, The RestoRod.

I also love extremly low cars. This is my second car with air suspension.
Modified frontbeam to be able to lay frame head and floor on the ground.
In other words, I don't need any parking brake *laughing*

My previous project was a 1985 Golf 1 Cab. The worlds first golf cab with removable roller bar! 馃槈 Also with air suspension. I did a LOT of bodymods on this car. If you know this model you'll see them if you take a close look 馃槈

This is how VW SHOULD have made this car.

But..enough watercooled!! 馃榾

VWFREAK 路

Nice, low sheen paint looks sweet as 馃榿

VWCOOL 路

Top work Dr!

bugking 路

just wondering..............how do you open the doors?
and do you have any pictures of the mechanism behind it all.

DrLaban 路

bugking wrote:just wondering..............how do you open the doors?

I am going to use a solenoid and a remote controll (which also is able to raise and slam the car). I'm doing this setup the next few days so I can post som pictures of it later.

Bought a so called "shave door kit" / "popout door kit" 馃檪

Tried to look at the website you have on the window but it seems that it's just the front page at the moment. Any plans to expand it?

Jepp, when the car is done I'll post some official info/pics on the cars site 馃檪

DrLaban 路

Howdy folks,

I麓ve had summer vacation and I麓m struggelig a bit to get the motivation back.
But I have worked with the bumpers and things are starting to look good.

Yesterday I layed some more f眉ller on both bumpers. Here麓s two good and "thick" layers on the rear bumper. This is done to make the profiles around the tubes etc perfect. The same "trick" is done on the front bumper.

And today the front bumper got it麓s first layer of flatt matt. The paint is not dry on the pics so it is not completly flatt.

vassy66T1 路

Very very cool
It really makes me want a beetle as a cruiser again ... but how many cars can you own??

STOCK 路

man that thing is sooooooo cool
awsome job ,
kudos to you mate

DrLaban 路

Ohh yes! 馃槈 (the bumper is not bolted on the picture, just had to try it on very quick 馃槈 )

Goddam that's awesome! Man I wish I had the $$ for something like that!!

cam070 路

Rear wheels/tyres look tuff as, Love it! And 10 points for the ashpod stereo setup, very inventive.

DaveCarter 路

Both cars are beautiful. I love the shaved handles and the ashpod. The other day i was actually thinking when i was looking at my mates mini truck "man i have never seen shaved handles on a bug." Well done.

DrLaban 路

hi guys,

I`ve had a looooong break this summer with the project. But next week I will have the hole week off, just to work with the car.
So stay tuned, next week the project is rolling again 馃槈

Scarab 路

looking forward to an update on that wild ride!!

bring on the photos!

Scarab (aka:Paul)

DrLaban 路

This weeks work started monday. First I had to clean up the garage around my car. Ready for rumble!

DrLaban 路

Tuesdays work...production of floors and panels
I have made a double floor to hide all cables, lines and components.

I finished up every parts which should be in 16mm MDF boards. Next up is to make the rest of the panels in 6mm MDF. Sides, spare tire well and under the dash.

Things seems a bit "boxy" now, but the end result will be different 馃槈

Next session in the garage will be Thursday, tomorrow I am going on a roadtrip to pick up my 1965 microbus deluxe.

DrLaban 路

Todays work in the garage

First some better pics after yesterdays session...

And from today..

Done. The side and back panels are going to get trimmed with dark grey leather

ryana89 路

Cheers, Ryan

Hay Dr Laban I hope things are on the up in Oslo after the tragic event.
P R A Y E R S for Norway's people ...
Take care and keep up the great vw werks mate.

This thing is unbelievable!! Love your work mate, keep posting pics of this thing!!

Can I ask a question....what size tyres and brand are your rear tyres? And what is their rolling diameter is? Did you have to narrow the rear to fit them under the guards? Cheers.

Thank you very much! I was on vacation the day the terror struck in Oslo. I actually work 2 mins by foot from where the bomb went off. My office builing got some damages, but all employees where ok. The scary thing is that I usually walk where he parked the car with the bomb when I am leaving the office....and quite often at the same time the bomb exploded... 馃檨

As for the project it has been standing still for some months now. I am starting up my photo business (I am a photographer in addition to my ordinary daytime job, IT guy) so this is taking up much of my time.
But I do work now and then with it. Hopefully I will be able to get it on the road this year before the snow come back 馃檪

swatter wrote:This thing is unbelievable!! Love your work mate, keep posting pics of this thing!!

Thanx! 馃檪

The rear tyres are Nankang NS-2 195/50 R15. The rolling diameter is a great bit smaler than original 馃槈 The front tyres are Nankang NS2 165/50 R15... even smaler 馃檪

I have changed to the short driveshafts to be able to get the rear wheels under the guards. I think I have 5mm clearens to the guard when the car is slammed.

DrLaban 路

A quick photo recap since last update...

The car is as you can see in my old garage @ home.

This is actually the garage where the car is built, but not assembled 馃檪 VERY small. Most people dont believe me when they see how small the garage is.

My Fab-Lab pressuryte air unit (daily air system with level control). I actually now got 2 air management systems in the car. One for daily use, and one for show/fun.

Testing the foglights/indicators 馃檪 I have made a custom relay system so I can use these as indicators in addition as fog/running lights. Why use more lamps than I need 馃槈 Keep it CLEAN!

One last. When I am not working as a photographer, or working on the project I help my friends with their projects. Here I am customizing the seat brackets (lowering) for my friends Golf 1 cab. Not often I got pictures of myself working... 馃檪

NUG637 路

OldTimer 路

Welcome DrLaban.

Love your ride - been following it for ages on VWVortex. Lot's of innovations, time and money spent - but it'll be amazing when it's finished.

So, when are you going to share how you did the dropping down ashpod? What's the secret way you get it to fold down like that?

Keep posting DrLaban, we are all fascinated.

OldTimer

Nice!!

You never ended up getting a flash kit??

Hey Doc,

Thanx for getting back to my Ashpod question, can't wait for the photos (I guess you don't need to hire a photographer!!! 馃榿 )
Seeing you're so busy with you new business (which is a good thing), I'll probably be dead and buried by the time you get around to it though 馃榾

Keep it up, it's awesome. 馃憤

OldTimer
