Dellorto Balance Tube ? ?

FROSTY ·

Hi There,
I have a 1776 with Duel 40mm DRLA Dellorto's Not sure if its a stupid question but, Would a balance tube conecting the manifolds make the engine run a little smoother?
Thanks
Jason

erm me thinks yeah
standard solex's have the tube on a bay 1800 n 2l
n both my beetle n bay run kadrons n yep balance tubes on both..

FROSTY ·

Yeh, they balance up no problem but hey i'm no mechanic (this could ease my mind if not exact), the manifolds have the raised spots that would take fuel injector so there's no reason I couldn't dril it and run a tube conecting all four.
Thanks
Jason

maybe get someone from here to have a yarn about it to you as i havent had dells yeah
good luck with it

waste of time, if there sync'd right it wont make any diff just another area for potential vac leaks

they're only on stock carbs to keep them smooth when the carbs start to go out of sync and kdogs only have them to cover up for the shitty linkage design and the fact there only single throat carbs

but i still love my kdogs.. 🤓
i had a lookisee at the set up on mine n as i have standard vw intakes on both the reason why mine have a balance pipe
basically they are simple to work on
dont f#ck up if they are set up correctly
n even i can set em up 👍
no worries - simple
good luck with your troubles

kads are fine as a base product duel carb setup
plenty of people run them and love them, and with a decent linkage and right jetting they give good results

i had a set and didnt like them but only as i was comparing them to webers and type3 solexs that id run previously

once you've run webers or dells though you would never go back to them

h ·

maybe so
but after having said carbs i couldnt wait to get kads on the bay
all good n happy now..
cruise time

vw54 ·

yes will make it heaps eaiser to tune and make it run better

fit a balance tube just like VW does on all twin carby engines

matberry ·

Sorry Dave but IMO it makes for a harder tuneup as each mixture screw is influenced by the others, so response becomes more vauge which requires a very good ear/tuner to get it right.

Frosty, if its rough, it's not properly in tune!

VWCOOL ·

are these DRLA carbs single or dual throat per side? Balance pipes can help correct minor throttle syncronicity problems with single-throat dual carbs, but not dual twins

Gracey ·

DRLA's are the equivalent to IDF Webers.

When using them as twins on a VW (the only right way to use them IMHO) they tune as Individual Runner carbs or "IR". That means one throat per cylinder.
If you add a balance tube it makes the idle circuit harder to tune as Matt has said above.
If there tuned correctly and everything else is ok with the motor then they should run very smoothly.

FROSTY ·

Hi Matb, I didn't think of it that way, I can tune them but i'm sure they are not exact, I watched you tune the hill billy racer a couple of times and you made it look and sound so easy. If you were closer than Cooroy I would drop it off have your magic fingers go to work.
I'm not going to do the balance tube thig, it was just a thought.
Thanks
