found my not starting problem... wasnt aware that the distributor/drive changed lengths between models... i believe my engine is a 1300 block with 1600 pots with all 1600 parts.. turns out the distributor needs to reach the drive for my engine to start. duh.
Can anyone shed any light?? did the drive change length as i have drives from both 1300 and 1600 cases, or did the actual dizzy change length? in which case i only have the later dizzy...
also does an earlier dizzy work on a later engine??
cheers!

they didnt
the dissy drive may be missing the shims

Hi
I had this happen to friends bus many years ago.
incorrect shimming wouldn't account for the dizzy drive not being long enough and all dizzys I had anything to do with are the same length so it must be a difference in the drives.
On my friends bus we took a skim of the dizzy shaft so it went into the case further.

we got caught out a few years ago with judys bug
those new mexi engines dont come with a dizzy drive for some reason and it got put in with no shims
the cog was only just meshing till it started to chew away the teeth then it started to jump out every so often
an unshimmed 009 wasnt helping matters either
all dizzys from 36hp up have the same lenght shafts

Sorry can't help with dizzy lengths...
I've never put two together to see what the difference is.
the very early distributors - in 1200s & probably 1300s had number 3 cylinder retarded so it wouldn't over heat because of the oil cooler over number 3 cylinder..
If You read of all the changes VW Did every year to improve the beetle, the length would probably show up..
cheers

cheers guys, sounds like i have a drive problem then... i'll get the drive out of the newer block and compare them and get back to you.....
baja burley ·
drives are the exact same length... i now have three shims under the drive but haven't put the dizzy in to check height yet..
Joel ·
be super carefull the shims are easy to drop into the case
but painfull to retreive
baja burley ·
yer i was all puckered up when dropping them in but even tighter hooking them out😂😂

Hi
Use a long screwdriver to drop them in, put it on the bottom of the case and let the shim fall to the bottom on the screwdriver shaft.
I think 40hp motors used a thicker shim than later motors.
I always assemble my motors with the drive in place but keep a dizzy fitted whilst assembling the motor, if you don the the drive can lift up if you turn the motor backwards and ruin the brass drive gear.

yer the screwdriver was used... got it all in nicely now. turns out the bracket was screwed. the thread on the tightening bolt was gone and the bracket was doing nothing! i went at it with a bfh and a new bolt and its all fixed now.
cheers for the help!

Worth noting that there is a dizzy drive that uses a very thick spacer as well as shims.
From memory it was in the 40hp era,
but I will have a look in the shed today to see if I can find one.
It may be the CASE is different, and rthe spacer just makes up for THAT.
YES, the dizzy body and its tang drive should all be the same.

i did have that thought about the case but i have both a 1300 case and 1600 and both use same length dizzy drive... im almost sure the dizzy just popped up because it wasn't properly fastened down.
engine still isn't starting though....🥲
cheers fort help!

I hope you can get it started.
Just for reference, since I realize your problem was primarily the dizzy clamp,
here are some different types of drive.
The short one is from a 36er,
and the one with the thick spacer is the 40hp one I mentioned.
It goes withou saying,
that you should always measure to make sure your dizzy will wngage fully with the drive.

yer mine were both the third one from the left... exaccary the same..
is there a different throw on the fuel pump cam between models i wonder???
