my car has developed a strange clunking noise from the rear drivers side. I just cant seem to locate it. it happens at the smallest bump and only seems to happen on the drivers side, its not the shocks because i replaces them since it started happening. it is not affected by motion or revs its definitely a suspension or suspension orientated problem. it seems to be getting worse which is why its become a priority.
im just after ideas from you guys that i can investigate.
its not the spring plate bottoming out, and ive jacked up the car and cant find something loose but ill have another look tomorrow, gearbox mounts and torsion bushings are brand new.
anyway any ideas are appriciated

Is it IRS ??? If so, maybe the pivot arm bushes are shot ???
The better the shocker, the louder the clunk from a worn bush.
Take the shockers off, drive it and and see if it continues.

are the axel nuts tight bloody tight

ill get the 36mm socket onto it tonite and check, but i doubt they are loose, the cotter pins haven't moved and a reputable VW place was the last to do the nuts up.

Nick, do u know what condition your torsion bar bushings are like?

I had the strange clunking noise from the drivers side in my baja also. It turned out it was the axle nut. It didn't look like it had moved as the pin was still there but it had, just enough to make the noise. Sounds all too familiar....
good luck!
Mick.

the bushings were replaced with new rubber stock when my new gearbox went in about 4 or so months ago. havent had a chance to get onto the axle nut yet.
