polak ·

just thought i would post the link to the thread of my car on here and also start a new thread regarding my car and mike's car seeing as though they are going do be drag orientated and its just easier for me to keep track of and update the one thread instead of 2 (im lazy😂). more pics will be up soon, in the mean time, heres a few pics of mine on the link below

vw54 ·

looks good

polak ·

thanks birchall. so whats happening with your car now? doing any bodywork or just focusing on mechanical? or just driving and enjoying it?

reub ·

Dude - that wheel and tire combo is PORN! I love it👍

May I ask what rim/tyre combo it is? Cheers

polak ·

hey Reub, thanks man, the look i was going for.... 😂 they are actually 15x6 Brm's front and rear, but the 135's on the front stretch out onto the rim and the slicks on the back balloon out and look fat... so it turned out well me thinks 🤓

polak ·

here are a couple of the recent pics, iv got pics from when i first got it but there are waaaayyyyy too many to post up... lol there are a few of the early ones on the link in my signature box if anyone is interested.... anyway, here goes and there will be many more to come including mikes car, hopefully i can get some update pics within a few days (she's a bit naked at the moment and we need to hang some panels 🤪)😂

deleted herbie that night and trial fitted bonnet and deckilid

some sanding............. and then some more... and so on....

being a little silly 🤪

kyb shocks and gearbox strap

yet again another front beam, this one is a CB 2 inch narrow with step adjusters.

mattie olsen machined up these nice trick alloy spacers so that i could fit the center cap onto my BRM's

the scat tensioner pulley is rubbish so stoker machined up this one for me

and these are just some recent pics.

Yeah, sweet as. I almost sold my Rader wheels last year to do the exact same thing to my 58 - put BRM's on it. Surely they're not 15x6's on the front though?

maybe 15x5's but all 4 of them are the same size in diameter and width..... still pretty sure they were 15x6.... hmmm... might have to look at them tonight when i head up to the workshop.

polak ·

😎

polak ·

jus checked definitely 15x5

HARRY QT ·

HI JUST WONDERING WHO MADE YOUR EXHAUST AND WERE DID YOU GET IT . FULL STAINLESS ??? LOOKS GREAT A1 OR CSP CHEERS AND THANKS

polak ·

hi Harry, extractors were actually off the shelf.... saw them at valla at george's stand (classic veedub) so when we got back to sydney i bought them. the muffler i bought from mike from CBB performance, you should be able to get the complete kit from either of them or you could give boris from vintage veedub a call too..... yeah its polished stainless..... prick to keep clean but i just love the look they have... thinking of getting them ceramic coated... see how i go

trickysimon ·

Still waiting for a video of that exhaust :P

polak ·

trickysimon wrote:Still waiting for a video of that exhaust :P

hahaha sorry dude totally forgot, did a sweet burnout today so would have been a good oportunity.... lol ill try get one up soon... thing is though, sounds soooooooo much better in person than on video... but anyways

VWFREAK ·

👍👍👍👍👍👍 Nice

polak ·

front guards + bonnet + 13mm bolts + some primer = a fun night tonight and finally some progress again 😁👎

polak ·

update:
just bought a rhino case for my new gearbox and will pick up my oval-port heads with port matched manifolds from mike k tomorrow night 😁
some pics up tomorrow night of the case, heads and mikes car's progress.

poor, sore and tired but loving every minute of it😂

Mick058 ·

what the rhino case set you back? PM me if you like - bolts in the same as a beetle box? Dimensions etc??

polak ·

got it from Rod Penrose, it was his last one left and it cost $360. he said he will be getting a few more in but closer to the end of the year, should be similar money, obviously just depends on exchange rate and stuff at the time. and as far as i know its all the same as a beetle box, its just made stronger with more and bigger ribs. cheers adam

vw54 ·

Hey Adam

Have you sent your entry form in for Warwick as yet will you RUN the car up there

The car looks FAST and just the part for the drag track

polak ·

😂😂 i printed the for out and filled it out 4 months ago... still havent sent it in... haahaha, definitly want to race it, its probably still far from fast as its only still a build in progress.... also its only a 1776, but im hoping it will be quicker than what people expect it to be.... ill have the goodies in it for portland though 👍😂

polak ·

here are a few pics of the new oval port cb head and rhino case.... excuse my enthusiasm but even little things like this get me bouncing off the walls 🤪😂🤓

trickysimon ·

44x37 on a 1776🤪
What cam and CR does it have?

polak ·

trickysimon wrote:44x37 on a 1776🤪
What cam and CR does it have?
yeah thats the reaction im looking for 😂 ummm it runs brand new stock tp heads now and an engle 110 cam with about 9.6:1 comp....unfortunately i dont think ill be able to have it in by warwick, but will still go and have fun with this motor, lol its only got 1100miles on it and im already looking at tearing it down in search of more power.... i swear im not addicted...............................................lol🤪🤓

reub ·

How good is the match porting of the manifolds to the heads?? If there is any offset I'd appreciate a photo.

vw54 ·

Wheres a pic of the L/H inlet port ??? is it the same as the R/H

polak ·

ummmm, i dont know which pics ur looking at dave, i posted a pic of both inlet ports which are obviously going to be the same unless ur going to be running different capacities per cylinder😂😂😂 and as for the single port pic, its of the exhaust port and again, they will all be the same. do you have different sized ports on your heads?? mike says that would explain the hoursepower your making 🤪😂🤪

vw54 ·

Adam

no i want a different pic do u want bets LOL 😀😀

vw54 ·

same unless ur going to be running different capacities per cylinder
Is that how yr going to achieve the power great idea

polak ·

vw54 wrote:Adam

no i want a different pic do u want bets LOL 😀😀
ill be up at the shop tonight, what u want me to take a pic of? and as for bets, im building a vw got no money to bet 😂 what are we betting for anyways? maybe i can get a personal loan...😂😂

vw54 ·

bring the Wodka all bets r off

make sure Mike does some work on thedrag car

polak ·

there will be plenty of vodka as usual😂 yeah thats the idea behind tonight, get some work done on our cars, maybe pull the body off mikes........ see how we go.

polak ·

update on last nights efforts:

i looked at my car for a while and put some stickers up on the hoist

mike fitted 2 horn grills

good effort 😂😂

vw54 ·

2 much wodka

polak ·

reub-revhead wrote:How good is the match porting of the manifolds to the heads?? If there is any offset I'd appreciate a photo.
yeah dude cant get the angle down the manifolds to get the pic to show the match-porting.... since its a CB set up im assuming/hoping its gonna be pretty good.... gotta be better then stock right?? hahahha😂😂😂

dangerous ·

Last few sets I saw,
the manifold was very loose on the studs.

You can either dowel the manifolds to the heads with roll pins,
or sleeve the studs.

The loose fit makes the match port a waste of time,
and can let manifolds loosen up all the time whilst driving around.

http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=38974&page=4

polak ·

really?!! thats dodgy.... these actually fit really well, the manifolds slip nice and tight over the studs, to the point you have to wiggle them to get them back off....

polak ·

hmmm... see how it goes, but i decided to get a little creative today with the bug, had a stinger for some time now but didnt really have a way to mount it as i have sidewinder extractors, came up with this.... 😂🤪😂 sounds soooo awesome and i still dont know what to think about the look other than "its different" 😂 hahaha second pic looks like its smoking a cigarette

trickysimon ·

Maybe a vid of that exhaust then 😂
Just kidding man.

polak ·

actually i do have a vid!!! couldnt help myself and took it for a quick blat down the steet... tried uploading it to youtube last night, but its too big, it said it would take 3hrs and 45min to upload...... any ideas on how to compress it so i can upload it?

reub ·

Use windows movie maker...👍

polak ·

finally we got some pics of mikes drag bug 🤪🤪🤪

polak ·

😎

polak ·

🤪

polak ·

😀 figured out how to compress the video.... nothing special but im exited to see the bug taking shape, slowly 😂

reub ·

its not loud enough😏

polak ·

hahaha! tell that to my right ear, its still a little deaf from when i revved it from under the decklid.... 😂

Boostn ·

Mike's Car looks hot.
How long until it's finished?
any specs?

polak ·

in mikes words "it will be finished when its finished" 😂😂 basically its the age old time and money issue..... hopefully over the next few weeks we will be able to hook into it a little more and get some good progress on it... as for the specs, he is still wanting to keep alot of it under his hat.... but i can tell you it a 65 bug, molly cage, N/A 2442cc with 51 ida's

reub ·

reub-revhead wrote:How good is the match porting of the manifolds to the heads?? If there is any offset I'd appreciate a photo.
The attached pics are why I asked about the match porting. Mine are 3.5mm out using a 0.5mm card template. It can be fixed but when paying $360 + postage for a pair of match ported inlet manifolds that aren't very well match ported you'd be pissed off too...

polak ·

ahhhh i see what u mean now, ill have a look tonight maybe..... these came with the heads as a complete package so im hoping it will be right, if not then i figure i might get the heads ported even more 😂😂

blue vizion ·

It looks a bit too high Mike!!

vw54 ·

yeah higher than the Ghia

polak ·

what, the lazer?😂
blue vizion wrote:It looks a bit too high Mike!!

What's the deal with the LMS car?
Upgrades?
will it be at Warwick this year?

Thats a bummer Reubs ! Its damn annoying when some people dont check the quality of the parts they sell before they send 😬

Boostn wrote:What's the deal with the LMS car?

From what I have heard the LMS car is getting a new moly chassis and HARROP supercharger to replace the turbo.

Dave was planning to be ready for Warwick but time is tight.

Boostn ·

Wow thanks Dave what a shame.
That was a nice car as it was.............why supercharger?

dangerous ·

Boostn wrote:Wow thanks Dave what a shame.

The old chassis has gone to another racer in Sydney
and will be at Warwick too apparenly.
Could be one of a few different drivers from what the grape vine says.

Dave Stoker wants to enter the new car within the nostalia series (as well as Warwick and Portland style events),
and a supercharger is a little more welcome for the old school promoters.

Plus Dave S. likes to fabricate and machine new stuff,
so this project is probably just something new to keep the juices flowing.

My understanding is that Mike Waldron will still be the pilot.

blue vizion ·

Yep and John Waldron chief polisher and drinks holder!

polak ·

nice and vague the dave 😂😂 not to give away any secrets *wink wink* they are all keepin things quiet.... all i have to say is that warwick is going to be brilliant and have a great turn out this year 😎

you might need a hand john, lots of drinks gonna be happening... maybe you should recruit the "black-footed ferret" to help 😂

some new pics, engine bay is actually clean this time.... trying to get it looking clean (to take the focus of the rest of it 😂 hahaha) for the 2009 dino's pizza hot rod and customs show on this sunday👍👍

colonel mustard ·

Looks really sweet Dude!

polak ·

Ok, seeing as though im sitting here at work doing nothing, i thought i might update on whats been happening... or even whats not been happening😂 been busy with other commitments but slowly making some headway with both cars(some more than others😂).

so here's a summary of the past week or two:
my car - stinger came off and street muffler went back on
- got washed..... and went to dino's hotrod show on sunday
- Picking up my new PAUTER 1.4 rockers tonight!!! pics up later tonight when i get back from mike's
(CBB)... this means i have all i need now to do a quick head swap for warwick👍 hmmmm.... 🤓

mike's car - made up new support framework for front apron and guards
- took out steering rods for further re-working (changed mind)
- made seat frame and fitted seat
- fitted new (extended for better driving position) steering column shaft
- modified and fitted front shocks
- started making up support frame for rear P/S guard
and as for pics, ill see if i can convince him to let me post more up😵‍💫

polak ·

here they are!!! if you could have 'sexy' engine parts, i think these would be fairly high on the list😂🤓

Craig Torrens ·

Just a tip for you: You dont want the oil breather lines to go up, then down, then up again as the oil will be trapped like the "S" bend in a toilet. This will mean the motor will not breath unless it pushes the oil out of the lines up into the tank. Also the oil will not be able to return back to the engine easily.

Love the rockers !!

reub ·

need some clear rocker covers now...

polak ·

yeah not how i wanted to run the lines but it only needs to last a few months as its all going to get changed when i go turbo and injected.... it was the only way i could run them without having the angles of the lines too tight... it seems to be working fine at the moment and any oil that gets trapped in the dip i figure will drain back to the motor anyway once it fills up too much so its not toooooo bad......🤪 ill have to re-vamp all the lines and re-think it all when it goes back in with the new setup.

polak ·

reub-revhead wrote:need some clear rocker covers now...
thats a mad idea!!!!!! lol but you would need to change your oil like every 200 miles to keep it looking clear and pretty and i cant say im up for that 😂

sauron ·

Hey Polak
I, d be interested to know what rocker covers your planing to use, as I have the same rockers on my 2332cc motor. I ordered a pair of CB performance alloy covers but I can't seem to get them to fit with these rockers.
cheers MC

matberry ·

The Scat stainless should clear, they use a bailey clip and have internal tangs top and bottom to keep the gasket in place. I've found them the best to use.

Craig Torrens ·

so are you going to run the wedge ports with the turbo setup ?

colonel mustard ·

The CSP covers look really tall. maybe they might be worth a shot?

polak ·

hey, im using the (forgive me for the swear word) EMPI rocker covers i already have, im hoping they will work as they are really high and should provide enough clearance.... mike is using the scat rocker coverson his 2442 and they seem to clear his pauter 1.5's so they would work well too.... but since the cast empi ones i have look higher ill see how they go.....

polak ·

hey craig, they're actually oval ports but yeah, i want to use them in the turbo set up which will hopefully happen after warwick..... should flow nicely, i just might have to de-comp them, see how i go... im still yet to calculate the comp ratio of them.... seeing as though they are a performance head i naturally assume they will be too high a comp for the turbo set up.......
Craig Torrens wrote:so are you going to run the wedge ports with the turbo setup ?

Craig Torrens ·

nice....🙂

vw54 ·

Hey Adam you must have the new super heads and BLUE rockers on by now

what figures did u end up with any horse power improvement ????

What numbers do you think it will run

polak ·

not yet dave, been workin during day and nights being spent on other cars, id like to get it swapped over next week though.... dont know how much power it will make, and as long as i make it down the 1/8th mile at warwick without breaking anything i will be thrilled.... plus i havent run this car at all before so i need to learn how to drive it first
😂
vw54 wrote:Hey Adam you must have the new super heads and BLUE rockers on by now

vw54 ·

Better pull yr finger out

westi ·

if it makes power like the polak talks.ghees the sky's the limit.
there's atleast 100 shettlen's in those head's.so half it for real hosres.
haven't you got those heads on yet.i thought you were full steam ahead.or r u just full of steam.lol.

vw54 ·

or r u just full of steam.lol.
better ask Mike W about that one hehehehehehe

polak ·

i never said anything about it making good power and i dont think 74.8hp at the wheels is anything to rave about, but i was happy with it being the first time on the dyno and still running stock heads on a 1776....... and as for full of steam or full steam ahead.... welll i guess its a little bit of both 😂 you need to make steam before you can use it right?........

1st thing that will be getting addressed this week is the axle tramp issue, already have gearbox strap, gearbox brace, nolathane bushes and kyb shocks (which helped heaps) but next step is thicker spring plates, heavier torsion bars and nolathane bushes in the spring plates.... should get rid of the rest, if not i need to get a trapeze brace kit or whatever they are called.... after thats done, ill hopefully have enuf time to get the heads in as i still will need time to get it re-tuned again......🤪

Craig Torrens ·

polak wrote:1st thing that will be getting addressed this week is the axle tramp issue
You need one of my Kafer Bar kits 😎

polak ·

yeah been down that road, was going to make a custom one but there is absolutely no way to get around my exhaust and oil system🥲

maybe some nike sponsorship will help.nice sticker on the side of the car to remind you.just do it.

Its fits no problems with the sidewinder exhaust. 😁

plenty of info here about it.

westi ·

well i am glad you asked ,i started to remove some extra weight from the block today.and it will be finished on monday.
and then i will put the heads together when waldron drops of his little valve install jig.then its a quick bolt together later in the week.
so that leaves me 6 week's to finish the front end,so yeh i reackon at this point in time.should be,and what kinda weekend would it be without the junka.

Craig Torrens ·

plenty of room !

polak ·

hey Craig, thats what i was talking about when i said "trapeze thingie" hahahhaa sorry didnt know they were called a kafer bar, thought u were just talking about a traction bar.... my bad..... yeah thats the stuff, looks killer, what u charge for that bit of kit?
Craig Torrens wrote:plenty of room !

ohhhhh you mean the head jig that im using right now..... as we speak even..... hmmmmm..... well maybe i can give u a lend of it when im done.....🤪 mike said he'll drop it off, jus make sure ur pussy isnt there, he's afraid of ending up like you, although i dont think it has anything to do with the cat........😂

on a serious note, good to hear junka will be there.... just wouldnt be the same without it.

was anyone talking about these.... http://lowbugget.com/thebar.html??

classic have an empi version (pic below), which probably just needs paint. They go at the back of the engine.... not sure if its worth it. but thought that might be what you were talking about polak...

polak ·

yeah thats what i thought it was, but i was going to make my own.... never mind, the kafer bar it what i need anyway....

polak ·

Brad!!

Mike and I were wondering if this was your cat????

westi ·

which head did you stick in the jig,and more impotantly do know what to do with it while it's there.lol.
what cc's are the heads.have you done them yet.have ya ha ha ha. got the old engine out yet.comon already.
on a nicer note.
i might pop over this week to check out the shop dude,i hope you have a fridge ,as i will proberly bring some frosty cold housewarming style beverages over, this is not an invite for a certian person(dave) who breaths alcohol and dables in a little oxygen steeling every now and then, just a casual drop in to say hi and have a quick drink.

westi ·

and yes the cat was exactly like that only ten feet tall with red devil like eye's.
wow, still getting realy bad flash back's.thank's for bring up memories that i am trying to erase.i won't sleep for week's.

polak ·

hahaha sorry but the pic was a must when mike and i saw it 😂 havent measured the cc's yet, i dont think ill shave them as i want to run them on the turbo set up later, hopefully they increase the power a little over the heads iv got now for warwick as they are much bigger anyway.... i stripped them down last night just to check that all the shims on the springs are right (which they are not) and to tidy up the ports a little around the valve seats.... had a great time removing the studs to change to the pauter ones, on one head they were a prick but came out, on the other they just wouldnt budge so i had a great 1hr session with the welder (welding nuts to the end of the studs as they stripped the thread) long story, tell u when i see u.... as for comin over, that would be great, we'll have a chill-ax night with a few munchies and beverages...give me a yell when you're comin up, should be sweet, no plans other than being at the shop as of yet anyways.... tell beau he is more than welcome aswell..... and yeah got two fridges 😂 oh yeah and mike is taking the jig with him to work, so i assume he'll drop it off tomorrow for you..... dont take too long, i need to put my heads back together 🤪 lol

vw54 ·

polak has no legs!!! rear end out, new oval spring plates, nolathane bushes and h/d oval torsion bars going in, hopefully newish-old engine coming out tonight in wait of new heads which will be back from ultratorque on thursday!!🤪

dangerous ·

If you are using oval spring plates you will have to slot the holes
since they are not slotted like later ones to get toe adjustment.

polak ·

hey dave, yeah i noticed that last night when i unwrapped them.... mike conveniently had a pair sitting in his roof all ready and powdercoated.... im going to slot them tonight before they go in........ apparently vw didnt think wheel alignment on the rear end was necessary back then.... lol 😂

But there just cars.

Mick058 wrote:too many secrets around here...
I doubt it has less to do with secrets and more to do with doing what they plan without 1000 'suggestions' to get them off track.

Sometimes just knowing something is in the works and knowing the caliber of that persons previous work will make you wait with anticipation.

HS618 ·

All this crap about secrets. Please realise that EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT and there are some people that are happy to give a "blow by blow" description of their current projects and there are some that rather tell ALL at the sucessful completion. For those that have built cars, know that the original plan can evolve into something else, in some cases many times. This can be due to many factors such as finances, different ideas, new and improved products or even the concept of not rushing it.
A secret is something that nobody knows about and I am sure that just about everyone on this forum knows about the majority of projects that are in the works in regard to new or reconstructed cars, wether on the forum or not.
Please respect each others individuality to do and share things in their own time.

westi ·

good point dave, dualy noted henry ,but these forums are actually based around showing and sharing, that's why they were started in the first place.most people that don't share usually don't partipate.end of story.
the reason why all the queenslanders share, brennden is because all off them combined would have the same IQ as 1 sydney person.lol.
except dave and pagey, they must have been born in sydney for shaw.i am certain of it.or atleast realy close to the border.lol

Im with Dave, sorry if my comment was taken any other way...i just wanna see whats happening. It is a forum! Don't tease, it isn't nice. I think its nice to see a blow by blow of whats happening, that way you can learn. Our VW scene is quite small, why not share the wealth?
If people dont wanna show till the end, or at all, thats fine - but this is a tease!

Anyways, off topic! Keep up the good work and good on ya both for getting into it!

I just wanna see some pics! Highlight of the morning is loggin on and seeing what people have posted 😎

ps - i added a LOL (😂) face to my other post so people know it was a lighthearted comment 🤪

matberry ·

Cant believe some of the comments either.....I've known the Waldrons for around 25 years, so if I cant have a dig with the pic thing why fuckn bother logging on here....lighten up.
As for the qld iq Westi.......no need to comment, just see ya on the track cockroach......hope there's no spelling checks on the entry form😂😂😂

ps, I haven't posted pics cause I haven't done anything to the Hillbilly Racer......how many weeks have we got????? Not real clever with the puter too🙄

VWMA Editor ·

I wish I had some secrets.....

Mike is waiting on approval from me before posting pics. He's wanting to make sure I am happy with the design, set-up, overall finish. I can appreciate Mike waiting for such an expert eye to scan over everything. Mike, in the last photo you sent me, I think you need to move the rag off the left guard - it might slow you down on the track. I hope this helps.

As for Dave's origin of birth. Rumour has it he was left in a basket under a milling machine....

Thanks for the offer JW, but nothin worth polishing up here, why dont you bring that old kg of yours up & we'll stick a bit of hp in the back to play with at Warwick.....that way you'll have something to polish and I'll have something to do too.

dangerous ·

So anyhow adam, how is your head change going?
Are you sending it back to Mike's or doing it yourself?
What cam and compression will it have?

polak ·

ok, can i start by saying how much i hate the fact that this site kicks you off after a certain amount of time, after mike and i read through all the posts and then i wrote my thesis in reply to all the posts, this site kicked me off and i lost the entire reply 😬

now back to the reply: dangerous: i picked the heads up on tuesday from ultratorque (dennis gatt) but then as most things go, i decided to take things a little further and took them to mr Stroker and got them shaved a little more 🤪 im wearing slippers as i write this 😀 so ben gatt would be pround hahahaha.... we're about to be measuring the cc's at the moment just to make sure its all good, then depending on how late we wanna stay at the shop hopefully we fit them tonight...... also, im building the motor myself at our shop with mike supervision as my experience is based around holdens and chevs, iv only been into dubs for about 4 and a bit years..........

now for birchall: yeah i know about the rods, i already had a set of chromoly push rods but im making a new set for these heads.....

westi: ur fucked.... hahahaha and shhhh about stuff..... p.s. nice qld-er call hahaha

Henry: you are right as another reason for not posting pics is that things change during the build process (which i know all too well) cant even list how many different idea changes there have been with my car and mike's car through the past months, let alone weeks........

as for every body else, WOW this thread has created quite a stir....... pleased about the interest in the work mike and i have been doing but there is nothing to hide, mike is pretty useless with computers and is trying to build a car the HE will enjoy..... i am being kept very busy trying to get my car done for warwick, but im going to condense all the progress pics we have of his car, just give me some time to try and post them all, next few days ill get around to doing it...... its been going slow with all the stuff we are doing, as well as the fact the that we both work stupid hours at our day jobs...... anyway, thanks to all with the interest in what we are doing and keep posted for the pics of mikes progress pics as well as some of mine......

Mike should I take Matt up on his offer for the KG!!?

looking good, well done Mike and Adam.

polak ·

ok, update, nothin on mikes car but my motor is back in and running, the bug is ready to go to warwick (sort of) all it together and ready to go to cbb for a dyno.... ill post up pics and vids after i get it tuned.... hopefully she will run pretty sweet :P

polak ·

just did the dyno tune, still need way more tuning as this was only some guess work to get it running before warwick, definitely alot more left in it...... rockers work great and motor is really happy with the new heads... need to weld a bung in the exhaust after warwick and then re-dyno it with an oxy sensor..... after portland its coming apart again, i need to put more comp into it as its way lower than we thought at 8 something (cant remember now).... also once its apart again, im thinking i might aswel drop in the new cb counter weight crank iv got and go for a much more aggressive cam, as this one is only an engle 110 and was put in there with the stock 1600 heads that were on before...... iv got pic of dyno sheet below.

Craig Torrens ·

peak power at 6200rpm.......are you sure its an engle 110 ?

LOWBUG ·

Hey John good to see adams keeping a good photographic history just incase Mike forgets something, F**king watch makers.

polak ·

Craig Torrens wrote:peak power at 6200rpm.......are you sure its an engle 110 ?

definitely a 110.... it was making power before at 5800 but that was with stock 1600 heads and 1.25 vw ratio rockers... now its got cb oval heads, long valves and pauter 1.4's in it, so i figure thats where the difference is....... need a bigger cam though and up the comp..... its totally killing the power this thing could be making

dangerous ·

That is an interesting Graph there adam,
I'll bet it has a lot more 'pick-up' than before.

Using the 1.4s with the W110 is pretty radical...kind of like a roller cam with the valve movement.
But because the valve sees each given lift so much earlier with 1.4's, it will behave like a cam with more duration.

You will want to keep an eye on the valve adjustment....and use a rev limiter.
With the valve lift rates using 1.4s on a 1.1 cam, it can be pretty harsh.

Can't wait to see how it goes at Warwick.

Craig Torrens ·

engle 110 producing power that high just doesn't sound right 🙅............good result, you should be doing mid/low 9's at Warwick with that ?

vw54 ·

well done looks like the 48s are working well

polak ·

dangerous wrote:That is an interesting Graph there adam,

yeah, i cant say im entirely happy with it at the moment, but as i said it was a very guestimated tune as i still need to weld a bung into my exhaust for the oxy sensor, it has a big fluffy bit that starts around the 3200rpm mark (obvious on the dyno graph) i should have just cracked open the block and changed the cam while it was out, maybe before portland 🤪 iv got a 6al in it so the limiter will definitely be in, im thinking ill set the shift light at 6100 and the limiter at 6400 gives me enough time to shift and still be in peak rpm area. gonna take it for a decent drive to the beach then drop the oil again and at the same time adjust the valves to make sure it will be all spot on before warwick....yeah i cant wait either!! it will give me a chance to drive it and learn what the car does and doesnt like (havent given it a proper squirt on the street yet but already seems totally different to before) im really keen to see ur car up there, always impressive 👍

polak ·

Craig Torrens wrote:engle 110 producing power that high just doesn't sound right 🙅............good result, you should be doing mid/low 9's at Warwick with that ?
no idea what times to expect, ill just be happy to get out on the track and have some fun with the rest of the vw gang.. plus i think my weight might hinder the times a little 😂.. i have no idea what to expect as i have never run it on a track, the car started out as a drunken idea to get a cheap paddock basher...... hmmmm may have gotten a little out of control.... 🤪 all good, i just wish i had more time and money to get it really going the way i want, but all in due course i guess...... thinking maybe i should just bite the bullet and go for bigger cubes while i have everything apart next time............................................................

polak ·

vw54 wrote:well done looks like the 48s are working well

hey all!! back from warwick! almost didnt make it with issues getting my car transported up there, but once all sorted it was a great weekend all round, very happy with the effort put in by the little bug and the vn ss i bought a few days prior just to tow the frikken thing up there! no issues and no breakages and was an awesome trip. ran a best of 10.058 @ 68mph, given a little more time should have been able to crack 9's, but due to driver error (me😂) i just missed out on making the finals. Had some severe axle tramp issues, so next thing on the menu is going to be a custom made kafer bar setup to tie in the rear end. Really happy with how consistent the car was, and with a little more track time maybe i will be too hahaha..... would like to extend a big thanks to the massive amount of ppl offering kind words and compliments, really makes the late hours and blood loss seam worth it. was great to finally put faces to all the names and im pumped to see u all at the next meet. thanks again adam.

well, iv decided to get a little more serious now as i have gotten the taste for drag racing and want to build something a little more drag orientated...... next on the menu, iv decided to get a half cage put in, then im building a custom rear end support that ties the forks into the cage, also since iv decided to build a new box and upgrade the motor yet again, i dont think im going to make portland, but hopefully ill be ready for warwick if time and money permits.... alot of my parts will be up for sale soon (even though they are basically brand new) so keep posted for plenty of pics and updates.... thanks for all the kind words, keeps me motivated.... cheers adam

hey all, been a while, been busy with customers cars, but the other day i had some time to build and install my traction bar, had to change my exhaust (so my previous one is for sale if anyone wants it) i decided to go a custom set of merged headers by brad at westside and then made my own fatboy as well as modifying my other stinger to suit this setup..... traction bar is made up of two square tubes inserted inside each other and plug welded..... did a few practice launches yesterday and gotta say it makes a big difference, still want to buiild a custom kafer bar setup that ties into a half cage, but thats a few months down the track when i save up some $$$ 🤪.... anyway, here are some pics of my endeavours.......

no, not any more, i had trouble getting it to even get to operating temperture, so before warwick when i changed a couple things, i decided to leave it off, just from laziness 😂 and now it runs perfect temp.... driven it in traffic and all is great.... so why mess with it... lol plus its makes easy access to get to everything 🙂

say what u want but it works, i now realise my cooling system was wwwaaaayyyyy overkill..... might be able to put the tinware back on when i go upto a bigger motor...

Sorry Adam, I think you should definately be running the rear tin too....
What is your 'cool temps', where are you measuring this, what brand/style (elec or mech) of gauge and have you head temp senders too????

Car looks great as always.

hey Matt, without the tinware it barely reaches 96 degrees celcius, in hot weather and heavy driving, im using an autometer pro comp gauge with an autometer sender unit which is tapped into the oil pan on my motor, its an electrical setup and has been verified that its reading the correct temperature by using an infra red thermometer aswell...... i know its usually a big nono for vw not to run all the tinware but in this case it helps....at warwick i ran all weekend and went in the cruise to town, the hottest it every got was 96 degrees and usually sat alot lower at around the late 70's to mid 80's.....

dangerous ·

Your comp is very low too adam.(oval ports have big chambers, and only 1775cc).
.....that is a good way to keep your engine cool,(and low on power too😂)

Brian ·

thats oil temp ❗

🙄

haha, yes i know dave..... my and mikes fuck up, we just assumed without measuring first and didnt cut the heads out enough, as soon as i get some money up im getting forged pistons, clearance cutting and bumping up the comp again..... still gotta say, its making pretty good power considering the circumstances and size of motor 😂 oh yeah, decided im going 2332, if im pulling the case apart i might aswel go bigger cubes while im at it right? lol

LOWBUG ·

Wow, its like re-inventing the wheel

polak ·

OMG thats a great idea!!!! maybe someone should do that!!! what about a square wheel?! wait that wont work, they dont make square tires......👎

LOWBUG ·

Gotta ask, if you oil temp is not effected by the lack of tinware, whats you head temps like? remembering that all that heat coming off the headers is now being sucked through the fan shroud and down over the heads. But you already know that so I shouldn't tell you how to suck eggs.

polak ·

hmmmm... i have a duct running to the back of the shroud feeding it fresh air, but ill bite.... ill install a head temp sensor and see what it reads at the heads..... should be interesting.... im not saying what iv done is right, but it helped one problem i was having..... plus the car basically only gets driven at the track (usually without a decklid) or the occasional cruise at the moment... guess we'll see.... ill install the sensors, and take it for a good run to kiama or something.... take the tinware just incase😂.... i never intended to leave it off, it just gave me good results, this was an experiment in the first place so y not do it properly 🤪

polak ·

question..... and the person whom would know the answer, knows who he is........ what is the acceptable or prefered head temperature?

Brian ·

u run the vw shop😁

hellbugged ·

what's wrong with oil temps in the 80's?.......

matberry ·

No decklid will definately help. Gauge reads correctly, cool. What is the oil pan exactly, do you mean the oil sump plate?

could you possibly be less negative and give up on the know it all attitude. Some of us read these threads to learn. Thanks.

yeah but unless people challenge the thinking behind these things, there wont be any discussions too learn from.......maybe you need an AVD history lesson, some interesting things have gone down in years past

i really like this car's style!!

POLAK.......do you run an oil thermostat?........they work really well, allow motor to heat up quick, then make use of a good cooling system when under strains of hard running.

what was the compression again?

Brian ·

I don't pretend to know it all 🤪

What is negative about stating the obvious ?

I pointed out the fact that running any size VW engine without that tinware is foolish
so to you Colonel lighten up old son😂😂😂

Totally agree Daimo, if people don't challenge ideas no one learns anything. It shits me that often we need to not say anything when we see a bogus piece of advice as someone may 'moderate' or whatever cause we may hurt someones feelings. So not only does the truth go awol, but those that dont know any better learn the wrong thing.

Anyway, I do like Adam's style too, just dont like seeing no rear breast plate, but I wont waste my time on the keyboard with that one.

The biggest advantage with using an oil thermostat with a full flow system with a remote cooler is that with the thermostat mounted as close as possible to the engine (simple to do) the engine, ie. bearings and valve train, see full oil volume and pressure MUCH quicker on initial start up.

sorry, my background is chevs and holdens so i still sometimes use the terminology 😂 i mean the sump, i have an extended sump but my oil temp sender is in the block off plate that is at the bottom right hand corner of the original sump ie case

lol lets not talk about the compression.... its a pissy 8.1:1.... bit of a sore point yet to be rectified 🤪

sometimes the discussions are stupid and offencive but that is just the weak minority who need to make themselves feel better by bagging others, most of the time though i love avd as different topics creat discussion and helps us all share and learn. I bet everyone here, whether they are experienced or not can learn something interesting from somebody else.... for example, i never would have thought about the thermostat in my oil line.... it will solve my cold running problems and i will now be able to retain my rear tinware piece. AVD is a great tool so why worry about some of the 'tools' hahahaha 😂

hellbugged ·

cool

Id be very interested to see temperature differences if you changed compression but nothing else...current ratio must suit the w110 to be making the dyno numbers

Got to love Big heads and 48s on 1776s !

unfortunately if im crankin up the comp again, im also goin bigger cubes.... hmmm anyone else thinking of testing this theory? i would also be interested to know🤓

new erco side plates!!! yippeee🤪

Hot. 🙂

typethreeking ·

i run my turbo fastback with only the upright porsche fan housing and no tinware seal as its a bit hard to seal up a type 3, but with the dry sump and oil coolers it runs around the 80 t0 90 degree c which in anyones books that pretty good for a turbo engine. Even when it was on the dyno and giving it heaps it got up to 100 but once we backed it off it comes back to around 85-90.

20bkombi ·

Hi Adam, On the oil thermostatand and cooler topic, The series 4 or 5 rx7s and cosmo mazdas have very good coolers with an 80' thermostat built in.
These are about $80 second hand.

2 sizes are rx7 600mm x 120mm x 50mm

and a cosmo 350mm x 250mm x 50mm

I've tryed taking out the thermostat years a go just to see the difference. It took about 1/4 hr of driving to reach 80'. So it went back in!

Adding a cooler means more oil to bring to temp, especially when the cooler is up the front. Now i will allways try and use one these mazda ones for a streeter if needed.

polak ·

thanks Aaron, can you adapt the thermostat into another cooler? the cooler i have is ridiculous already and just need a thermostat to control my oil flow on start up as i cant get it to operating temp..... lol on a lighter note you trying to get a little mazda into all the vw's ? hahaha jokes 😀

polak ·

hey all, just thought i would let ppl know that if anyone is interested, my motor is up for sale, on ebay right now if u wanna search it, as well as in the avd sale section.... cheers adam

hey guys thought i would bring this thread back in, not much progress on my car or mikes car for that matter, business first right? anyway, i have been playing with it a little lately and so here are some pics, hope you enjoy :P

8.1:1? i had 14psi pumping in when i had 8.1:1!! left behind WRX's!!
I like to see people trying different things,
We are working on some different combos to see what happens.....But thats for later, i wont hijack your thread!!

hey Greg, yeah i like them.... both fronts and rears.... the cordless hammers are great, you can get into tight spots without having to worry about cords... lol... hows your car coming along?

typethreeking wrote:nice stuff adam, hey what are those front beams worth these days, and how narrow is that one???
hey, mine is 4 inch narrow, not sure how much they are these days, last time i checked they were between 700-900.....bought mine from someone here who no longer needed it, u know the story, project that never got started.... i know rod penrose has one for sale... stock width, but they are pretty easy to narrow.... they have pressed on ends, not welded...
