I've got a Tru-shift 5 speed gearbox which I bought a long time ago as a complete box, only it had been disassembled.
The reason it was disassembled was because it was creeping forward when in neutral, apparently it needs clearancing between the gears.
The original plan was to build the box as a close ratio 5 speed. But then I found out that these boxes don't handle horsepower very well. So I canned the idea and it has sat in the shed ever since.
I've since acquired a near std 76 bug which I use as a daily driver, problem is the gearbox is sad and it's starting to make a few growling noises.
So I was thinking of having the gears clearance'd and the box re-assembled, and using it in my 76'.
I'm interested in opinions on weather or not this is worth doing, ideas on costs and who can do this kind of thing.
I don't want to spend anymore on this than I have too.
Cheers,
Andrew

Dave Butler (aka dangerous) will be the man for that job
5 speeds are great fun with some nice ratios.........or sell me the 76 and don't worry about it......i really want one of those 76'ers
Gracey ·
If I had a 5 speed like your's Daimo it'd be going in my other 76'.
Hopefully Dave will chime in here or I'll PM him.

any pics of your car around Gracey?

I would like to have a look at your trans.
I cant say that I will be the cheapest person to do your trans,
but you will get much more for the dollars spent.
I dont think you will find anyone who is as passionate as I am about the Volksy transaxles.
As with any VW trans, best to do a price estimate after a thorough inspection.
The tru-shift had either "press on" or "screw-on" shaft extensions,
so unless these run "true" there may be problems there.
I am sure someything can be done to make it all work.

None on the forum or my current computer, I'll have to fire up the old abacus I think I've got a few photo's on there.

Thanks for the response Dave.
I'm not after the cheapest quote, I just don't want to throw money at something thats destined to fail. I think value for money is the correct term.
I think this one has screw on shafts but I'm not 100% sure.
I'd be happy to leave it with you to have a look at.
If you want to PM me your contact details and the best time to call, we can take it from there.
Cheers,
Andrew

I am really intrigued by these 5 speeds. how do they work? Are they converted from a std 4 speed? Will they handle a mild 1776? Whats the cost if I have a good IRS unit now? Terry

The Tru-shift kit converts a four speed to five by the use of shaft extensions and an extended housing on the end of the box.
According to the people I've spoken to they should be okay for motor up to about 100hp at the wheels, this isn't confirmed just an educated guess.
Cost of the kits when new (there no longer available) was $1295 from memory. Then add the cost of having it built onto an existing box, fixing anything that on that box or reconditioning it, and then any performance mods to the box eg. close gears, super diff, heavy duty this and that.
Pretty soon the costs add up, so it's pretty hard to give a price, due to all the factors involved.

If anyones interested, I'd consider selling my kit with the IRS box that it was built into as it's not suitable for anything that I have.
I've got a near stock 1600 76' Bug which I don't think is worth putting a 5 speed into, and my other 76' will probably be way to much for the box to handle, not worth the risk in my opinion.
I'll take what I paid for it $500.00 as is.

Hey Gracey - PM sent. Forget the second one, I re-read the thread properly Terry 😊
