Using the Stock Muffler

I've often wondered what are the limits of performance for the stock muffler, reason being is that reading about the Porsche Salzburg rally beetles they had the standard muffler as well as the southern cross rally cars of 1967.

What sought of things can be done to increase the performance of the standard muffler, and has anyone used one for a decent output motor, from specs on the aforementioned cars they put out about 100-125hp with the muffler, running either 32 or 35.5mm exhaust valves.

Cheers

ive heard of people cutting them open and removing the perforated baffles then welding back together

why bother though? theyre still not eqaul lenght runners despite what some people reckon,
ive cut open my old german ernst one and it was same as the kadron ones inside

if its only for looks theres plenty of systems out there that flow better and use stock cutouts

i personally wouldnt run one on an engine with anything bigger than a stock solex
why make it breathe in better when its restricted breathing out

yeah agree.........stock exhaust for a stock motor.

I know a stock exhaust on a 1916 makes it run like its a mild 1600 !

its the very small tail pipes that restrict the exhaust...
You can but tapered pipes without the baffles...
I had two 48mm pipes welded to My muffler when it was new... was very noisy... a standard 1600 single port..
