This is a follow on from thread http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=78023
I have just taken the plunge and purchased the Adapter kit from http://www.crankykits.com.au/index.html for my 1800 superbug.
I have only heard good things so far but will provide a report when it arrives and I install it.
know it sounds expensive but considering i dont have to remove transmission bush and have already eaten two starters in less than 3 months I am hoping its a good long term investment.

Nice. do an install thread! can't wait to see.
are you buying a new or secondhand subaru starter? 馃檪 thanks for sharing!

A second hand starter Colonel, and yes I will write up a full install when I start. The correspondence from them has been very fast and helpfull so know i wont go short on help from them.
below is just one email from the many sent.

"Hi David,
regarding the contacts and plunger . if youve ever had a flat battery and have heard a clicking noise everytime you try and start the car, this was probably your contacts making "contact" with each other....when power is supplied to the starter (ie when you turn your key to start) the plunger is pulled foward by a strong magnet...this shoots the little gear from the end of the starter forward and mesh's with the ring gear on the fly wheel.....once this has gone as far as it needs to the copper contact ring and contacts (inside the starter) have now made contact with each other and have completed the 12v circuit to now start turning the starter motor... if you've ever tried to start your car while it is already running you would have heard a spine tingleing grinding noise..this is the sound of the poor little gear being driven into the flywheel which would be spinning on idle somewhere around 500 - 1000rpm.....(not nice) these copper contacts tend to wear out and pitt with years of use much the same as a set of points on your vw... or even spark plugs.... these are nice and easy to replace and source which is a big advantage over vw starters...auto electricians will not look at you funny and respond to this may take a few days....nippon denso starters are in almost 90% of modern cars and use standard parts.. if you are going to purchase the kit we can supply fitting instructions to help with you putting it together...it can be a little bit tricky but once you master the art (yes art 馃檪 ) you'll be fine. we suggest you scout around some wreckers to see if you are able to find a starter first ...just incase you have dramas finding one (this saves on postage) we also supply the complete unit fully assembled if you go down that path....which still usually equates to less $$$ then a standard vw unit...depending on your bellhousing/gearbox this will tell you what subaru starter you require... if you are using a beetle or 1600/1800 kombi gearbox you will need an auto subaru starter motor (starter motor out of an auto transmissioned subaru )(these are very common) and have an orange foil sticker on the starter motor with 13 on it.... if using the 091 or 2L kombi gearbox (6 rib) you will need a manual starter these have a longer nose and have a blue foil sticker with 12 on them...these arent so common as most of the import cars are ex taxis from japan which are auto's... these starters are in the EJ motor range of subaru's ...ie EJ22 EJ20 and EJ25 including turbo models..... let us know how you get on and we can arrange for postage and payment etc.... you will also need to specify which motor and gearbox you are running so we can supply you with the correct unit....as you may be aware not all vw's are the same...everybody assumes they are haha but are far from it... a real nightmare for us spare parts

Subaru starters are incredibly reliable"

I think you will be impressed with the cranking power those things have.

Aaron's 20b rotary Kombi would not even crank over with a "hi-torque",
but the Sube starter did the job awesome.

Looking forward to finding out dangerous.
I have actually started install now and will be doing write up on my hobby site

Below is email sent to me by crankykits

Hi David, hope you are pleased with your kit, they are a little bit more fiddling around then a stock vw starter but now converted it should be much easier to put on and off then a standard starter. not that you should need too, now youve converted... Did you like the sound of it ??? Thanks for the thread on the install too, its hard for me to know how more "normal" people go fitting them. It becomes second nature after fitting them to numerous vehicles over and over again, what is common knowledge for me may not be for someone who hasnt had much to do with starters...so thanks again for educating more people on the world of cranky kits... Well done
Paul
