our 74 beetle (1600tp) goes ok on short trips aruond town but if we try to go for a longer drive it starts to cough and loses power and you can barely keep it running. it has a new fuel filter so i dont think thats the problem, any help appreciated.

its probally easier to remove the tank from the car to get at it
its a fine gause type filter on the stand pipe inside the tank undo the nut that holds it in place and remove the filter and replace or clean also blow the fuel lines out front to back while yr there to see if any gunk or crud comes out catch in in a bucket to see it was the problem

i have just got back from a drive and have also noticed that tinlet manifold has what looks like condensation on it and it is cool to touch(at carb mounting flange).

have a feel in the fan inlet mine had a bit of rag caught in it ok short drives sad long trips when it got to hot,the icing on the inlet manafold means that the heat risers are blocked or removed, to check the fuel take it of the pump and it should run out when it hangs if it dont ther is a blokage,it would be a good idea to change all rubber fuel linesfrom tank to carby it could have a chunk of inner rubber hanging about.
good luck
