where abouts are you?
Klaus ·
just use an early beetle box with wide 5 , they are smaller drums . early type 3 drums are used for bugs n splits as upgrades and are freakin big $$$ for what they are.
drums complete can go for anthing from 3-4 hundred.
and early bug are a narrower track so wider rims can be fitted.(pre 65?)

thanks for the help, im in coomera ,have 66 split with reduction box trying to convert to st axle ,did one a few years ago mike from cbb did all the work so it was a bit easier thanks for the advice, paul

if i use pre 65 bug wont that make the spring plates not line up? i know with the type 3 the spring plates only need notching and turning a couple of splines i thought the width was nearly the same as a split ,if i can use early bug great ill give it a go, any one have one for sale cheers

ring custom vee dub they will be able to modify your axle tubes and sort you out

i have an old early type 3 box which is broken inside but the axles are good for the conversion, i did my own years ago from the same setup, the axle tubes are longer but need the shorter ends put on, i couldnt get mine off so i cut and welded 2 sets of short ones extra long, if you want the axles $50, the box is still attached, no drums or backing plates, you can use your kombi box still if you want to.

hey rexy - are the early type 3 axles diffferent to the later type 3 axles? or is it just the backing plates and drums that changed from wide 5 to 4stud?
looking at doing this conversion myself and have a later type 3 box lying around - want to keep the wide 5 tho...
thanks

anyone know how much narrower wide bug drums are compared to type 3 drums?
vwsteve ·
theres a fair bit of difference, not sure exactly maybe 10-15 mm??

i have an early type 3 gearbox that is working (in car at the moment) but the synchro gear for first plays up sometimes. i am hoping to buy an early bug gearbox with short axles and tubes so i can fit some wider wheels in very soon. if i can get one you can take the type 3 gearbox if you want to, will let u know.
cheers

im pretty sure you have to keep the longer axles in your type 3 mate, you can prob use thinner drums if you space the ends a bit before you put the nuts back on but then you dont have the bigger brakes to help stop a bigger car.

thanks for all the replies i think ill wait for a good type3 i know it might take a while cheers paul

sounds good is it good nick and can you get it to courier
Klaus ·
i'll pull the drums and get them checked (I have a couple of sets ) and get the best ones. I've never driven the car but can put it on stands and run thru the gears . Dont want me to drop it at your mums in the gong?
66doubledoor ·
that should be ok ,check it out and let me know my mums husband works in the gong so he could pick it up i just dont want it to be stuck down there as ill need it soon
Klaus ·
will check it tomorrow.
Klaus ·
pulled drums looks like they were machined not long after it was off the road (no lip ) and it runs fine thru all gears . I can have it out by the weekend , even earlier if needed.

iknow this has dragged on a bit but i need to get it sent to gold coast as i need it soon and wont be in the gong for some time if you can put it on a pallet and get it to courier that would be great hanks paul
Klaus ·
