Replaceing Master Cylinder Rubber Grommet Advice

ok so i found a leak in my brake circuit. the rubber grommet where the reservoir solid line enters the cylinder.

so i reefed it out and its a bit perished so i ordered a new one.

but i tryed to refit the old one in the short term and cant get it in the hole. is there a trick to get the grommet in? should i push the solid line into the grommet before or after its fitted?

anyway any tips are appriciated.

thanks nicko

Leave it out in the sun to soften up for a while, give it a liberal coating of brake fluid & then have a try. I would leave the hard line out until the grommet goes in, gives the grommet room to move on the way in. Hard line should go in pretty easy afterwards with a little bit of brake fluid on it.

I think

slip a bit of Vasso on it n around the hole always makes things go in easier

Go the brakfluid not vasso (petrochem-wrong type of rubber) res pipe last as above but make sure it's nice and clean and STRAIGHT.

ok well after a whole day of swearing and no brakes, well 4 hours really....., i got up at 12. i have brakes again.

got the grommet in but when i pushed the solid line thru the grommet it managed to wedge some rubber over the outlet.

so then when i went to bleed my brakes the master cylinder couldnt replace the fluid it was losing and it felt like the cylinder was buggered.

so i pulled out the master cylinder and blocked off the outlets and it seemed to have pressure, put it all back in and did a better job with the grommet and after much bleeding i now have an ok pedal. not fantastic but ill bleed them again tomorrow and see how it goes.

will air work its way closer to the wheel cylinders with driving making it easier to bleed?
