Putty Rd........great drive apart from the Kangaroos

Came back from Muswellbrook Sat night after a B'day party. Took the boring freeway on the way up with the Fasty and thought Id add a bit of speed with bendy bits on the way back. Putty Rd back to Windsor is pretty good for this. Was warned about roos by my aunty as they spat a big red out the back of their 4wd the other night. Cruising along around 9.30pm and then came to a spot where it had the typical yellow sign with pic of the kangaroo and message "NEXT 10KMS". Just as I thought to myself, how do they know its for the next 10kms only, from the corner of my eye this big grey bugger was atleast 20m away and it only took 2 bounds and smack into the front guard, bounced down the door and into the rear guard. The rear guard started to scrape on the tyre so of course thought sh#t, whats this going to look like. Got out of the car to assess, didnt look that bad so thought bugger it just pull the guard away from the tyre. I thougt thats the only spot it hit, but after looking in the morning I have a dent and 5 inch vertical crack in the paint with roo hair still stuck in it on the front guard, a nice bump and 2 inch crack in the paint on the door and of course the rear guard which has a nice crease because it pushed extra hard against the inner guard.

I did turn around to see if the roo was there, was hoping to drive over its head but it obviously got away. Oh well lucky for pull off, put on panels. Probably can think Im lucky that I got away with what I did.

I like the putty road - but daylight hours only..
even then in early mornings and afternoons the Kangaroos can be about..

and as You have found out they can and do , do a lot of damage

sorry to hear of all the damage to Your type 3..

cheers

Hiya Mac,

How about a wildlife lesson for a Statesider?

It had been my impression that Red Kangaroos were found mostly in central and western Australia. And Grays were pretty much found in the east. But it seems from what you've posted up that you're as likely to run into a Red as a Gray in NSW.

Do their ranges overlap?

Bookwus you have the correct info, not sure about this "big red", may have been just a slightly different colour the poor old roo was sporting, but not a red flyer.

theres too many blind bends on the Putty rd just waiting 4 a roo

Spread that word Dave!! 🙅 If less people use it then it's better for us. Now that the old Halfway House servo has been burnt out there's no rest stop for the bikers between Colo Heights and Bulga. 😂 The old Putty Rd is the best road from the Hawkesbury to the Hunter and shaves off 1 hour to the travelling time compared with the freeway. Now that the trucks avoid it (except for a few) it's a much safer road as well.

By the way, there's plenty of Wombats around the Putty as well. Saw quite a few knocked last weekend on the Tamworth and back run. Hit one of those suckers and you'll know it as well!

Dont know about red and grey. That was my auntys story. I know mine was a grey. Yes very glad didnt hit a wombat.........they aint that fast and very stubborn!

I use the Broke Rd when going to Muswellbrook (I'm in Northern Sydney). I go up the F3 and turn off at Peats Ridge and never return to the F3 hellhole. It saves me about 15 mins, and I arrive calm as anything. The only problem is lack of overtaking spots, but apart from that it's a great run. Down through Wollombi and north is beautiful. If the F3 traffic is light I may rarely kickon up the F3 to Freemans Waterhole, and then come into Broke via Cessnock - if only to have a milkshake and chips at The Oak.

cmon then, show us your scars. PICS!

Hi

Thats bad luck Andrew, hope you can get it fixed OK

When we came back from Warwick last year we had to stop at Wisemams Ferry on the way home, I plugged Wisemans Ferry into my GPS and we turned off at Singleton and went down the Putty road for a bit and then went of to Broke, what great road.

We stopped and had a great lunch at the servo at Broke, then we went onto to Wisemans and through Wollombi, there was about a 1k section of dirt near Wollombi.

As it turns out we missed a horror afternoon on the F3.
