pushrod tubes...more help needed! lol

Ok, so i finally just ordered some telescopic pushrod tubes. (Went for the SCAT gold ones after all that!)

Question regarding fitting them.

I have found this which is going to be a great help as i haven't tackled this before!
My question is...when re-assembling they say "Torque the nuts to 14-18 ft lb"
Has this got to be bang on, or is it one of those things that as long as you're not stupid and do them too loose / tight it will suffice?

Nothing is "bang on" as there is always a tolerance no matter how small! Here you have a tolerance of 4 ft lbs so as long as it's somewhere from the lower limit to the upper limit you are right. If you don't have it to these limits as specified by manufacturer then you are inviting failure.

Is this for the rocker stud nuts ?

Hi

I believe these push rod tubes are the screw up type...
NOT spring loaded ones...

this type of push rod tube can cause overheating of the engine oil.. due to them being made of thicker material and holding the heat...

thats why VW pushrod tubes are very thin metal....

Hi Lee!

They've just arrived mate and deffo have springs 🙂

My engines pretty bodged anyway, so it could yet still overheat and explode!

Fingers crossed for me though!!

Bugger. I could have sold you a brand new set of those push rod tubes for half price as I no longer need them.🙁

Nooooooooooo!

Story of my life, right there!!!

HI
I'm not saying Your engine will overheat but the oil doesn't get as cool when running standard pushrod tubes...

but if you don't have an overheating problem now..
and not driving in 40C degrees You will be OK...

they are made for repair purposes...

so You don't need to take a head off to fit them...
do they use standard push rod tube seals??

Not noticed it overheating at all, but then again it's winter so who knows.
they are made for repair purposes...
....which i can deffo vouch for! My driveway is praying i fit them before the weekend!!

Lee, i wouldn't know a standard push rod tube seal if it bit me mate, seriously not got a danny la rue!
There's seals a plenty though which is a good sign!
If i post a pic can somebody tell me where they are all meant to go as i was naively thinking there may have been some kind of instructions in the packet! lol

hope that helps

Thanks for the link...it explains a bit, but mine are different!

Was wondering if i have the bits in the right order as in my exploded view below!??

vw54 ·

Yep that looks right
the end rubber are around wrong way
the washer goes on the tube first then the rubber so it seats in the ehad n case

Put the tube on the left hand side of pic to the engine case this will make the male end inside the female end and reduces the chance of leaking via the 2 o rings

Also when assembling the tubes lubricate the o ring with some vasso so they will slip inside the outer tube easier

djnee ·

Magic 🙂

Thanks for that!

djnee ·

OK.....hit a bit of a brick wall, so ive left it and made a coffee else i'd have started throwing tools around!!

So far so good....got the old ones out...cleaned everything up...fine.

BUT

How the hell are you supposed to keep them sprung in whilst you fit them??
Im finding it impossible!

Can anyone suggest anything?

I tried sort of pushing them all the way in and cable tying them whilst i offered them in place, but then once you cut the cable ties the bits are then impossible to remove.

HELP!!!!!

Oooooh...i just solved it! Thought i'd post how i did it just in case anyone else gets stuck!

Ok, the problem was keeping the things pushed together long enough so i could offer them up to the holes. The spring is pretty strong in these, so it was proving impossible.

I found the solution in cloth tape, believe it or not!

If you get the outer pushrod tube and half wrap a bit of tape around the end, then get the inner inside and squeeze both together as much as they will go. Once sqeezed in, wrap the cloth tape so its joining both tubes together. I found if i went around the tubes twice this was just enough, BUT keep pinching the tape where the tubes meet or else it will rip.
Offer it up to the holes.....then as soon as you stop pinching the tape where the 2 tubes meet, the tape snaps under the pressure from the spring and the tube snaps in place!
Then obviously remove the bits of tape from the tubes and you're done!

yey!
