The story so far.

The car began restoration about 8 years ago by a gentleman who resided in the Dandenongs, he has taken a fair proportion of the car back to metal, but there is still a fair bit more to go, he has also begun cutting out and repairing the rust in the car and from what I have seen he has done a good job, no corners cut, pardon the pun, and also begun smoothing a lot of the dents in the car.

It was then sold to a fellow Melburg VW Nut who simply did not get the time to do the project, and now I have bought it and the journey continues.

So I picked up the car last Sat 5th Sept, at around 11.30am, and have parked it in the shed and gone through the mountain of spare parts with the car.

Then on Sat Afternoon the work began, first was to check all the gaps around the car and inspect all the mounts and mechanical, this being given a clean bill of health it was time to separate the body and the pan.

Then I began removing all the primer and then the long task of metal finishing all the previous repairs, and removing all the filler that had been put in, I have made some good progress on the RH front guard, and am now working around the front panels....so much to do Sad ......I am convinced that I am completely mad

After checking through the parts I placed an order with CIP in the US and Ill be stuffed all the gear arrived today Shocked, I cant get parts from Sydney that quick Exclamation

Nice score there. It looks way better than the one I saw in St Mary's last week. I think it was mostly body filler and very little Ghia. I have to agree with your experience with CIP. Incredibly fast shipping. I'm curious how you dash pad turns out. I've yet to get one for mine and RHD dash tops are not so commonly listed at the suppliers in the US and Europe.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I'm envious.

I can't wait to get my grubby hands on a KG one day...
I rekon they are the classi-est Vee dub that was out (my own opinion). Like, for the rich and famous compared to the middle mans common beetle. (I don't feel classy with a 69' baja lol)

Pat on the back for the awesome work!

Scarab ·

nice one mate!

looking forward to seeing updates on this one for sure!

Racermelb ·

Some up date images

In Epoxy primer ready for filling and finishing, then will be Polyestered rubbed back and reprimed and blocked back then hopefully ready for colour.

bajachris88 ·

beautiful work! :P

So whats the plants to put hte super charger on :P? I'm keen to check out your ideas. Can you buy mounting kits for it to do blow thru setups?

Scarab ·

WOW!! you don't hang around mate....nice work!! 👍

isky ·

this is freakin AWESOME!! Nice work mate. Really inspiring. Good to hear about CIP, ive decided to get my KG repair panels from them.

Now why cant there be anyone in Brisbane doing this i can hang with?!!??!! 😉

bajachris88 ·

Ya should have got into the scene about 24 months ago haha, i would have invited ya round. maybe i should check out ur beaast one day mate :P 👍

CIP are great... i have done deals iwth them and they been very reliable. however, i took a price list to Mick Motors, and the awesome guys there agreed to compete with it. saved like $100 compared to buying from CIP, which including GST, simply by not having to pay postage.

axlepressbutton ·

Looking good!
Have you settled on a colour yet?
Stuart

Racermelb ·

This is the colour and how I want it to look with the exception of the wheels

Scarab ·

that is one nice Ghia, I can see why you are going with that colour!

so what are your plans for wheels mate? and how far away is body from being drenched in colour?

all the best mate,

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Racermelb ·

These are the wheels, well these are the same as the wheels I am currently having chromed

vwombat ·

Everyone has good and bad days. My experiences with Mick's Motors have always been great! I doubt they do much trade in KG's though.

Scarab ·

lovin the choice of wheels mate! 👍 👍

vwombat ·

I am so jealous! I'd love to have the time, skills and cash to put in to something at this standard. You do the AVD community proud.

Racermelb ·

Cheers Guys, it is great to have the skill and the money but the time is the killer.

Racermelb ·

Just bought this for the KG, will look very good once they are retrimed in black leather to match the rest of the trim.

Racermelb ·

Well finally an update, the KG has got colour on it at last, the engine bay, boot and cabin have all been painted in readiness for the body to be put back on the pan, the engine has still not arrived 😠 which is now put the dead line in question, but hopefully I can pick up some time else where

grogy ·

awesome color cant wait to c it all together

Racermelb ·

Hooray for wheels

Got the centers painted to day, off to get welded back together tomorrow

Racermelb ·

Finally got the tyres fitted today

145/65/15 fronts
175/65/15 rears

colonel mustard ·

Those wheels look the goods mate!!!!

whats going on with the floor etc??

+ what else in the garage there.... is that a orange/red mazda or toyota i see... its hard to tell

Racermelb ·

The floor has all been covered with Dynamat as will most outward facing panels.

The car in the back ground is an RA28 Celica, for sale I might add.

colonel mustard ·

good stuff. cant wait to see the finished result. 🙂

Racermelb ·

now with clearance😎

Scarab ·

mate, one word for your choice of colour / wheel combination......CLASSY!!

Really looking forward to more updates, it is really looking the goods!!

Racermelb ·

Well did some more "tinkering" today, did Dynomat to the fire wall, and bulk head, also painted the glovebox, ash tray and steering column, and trial fitted the steering wheel.

Scarab ·

great work!

quick question though....doesn't the Dynamat normally go inside the cabin.....not that I would know, just wondered as I had only ever seen it fitted inside.

would love to know your thoughts, as I was looking at using Dynamat on my Notch eventually, and would prefer to use it in the most effective way as I've heard its quite expensive stuff.

Many thanks!

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Scarab ·

sorry mate, forgot to say how much I liked your steering wheel. Is it a Moto-Lita? It has a real period look that will suit your Ghia beautifully! 👍👍

Racermelb ·

Cheers

This is the first time i have used the Dynomat, and i have to say i have been impressed, the way in which it reduses drumming in panels is incredible, as far as use on external surface, so long as you ensure all the edges are firmly in contact with the surface and the surface is clean i cant see a problem, it may get dirty but thats about the ony down side I can see.

Cheers
jon

colonel mustard ·

In my opinion, you would only use dynamat in area's that were going to be covered, > so that they aren't seen, but also, so it wont get dirty and lift. Ideally you would use something like POR15 to seal everything else as it has a hard finish. As for the engine bay, the chrome covers look great (for beetles) but just make noise, If you covered it with the original stuff, would most likely be a good option. engine bays, always get dirty.

Loving the progress Jon. 🙂

Racermelb ·

Cheers Colonel

The dynomat in the engine bay will be covered by another product from the same manufacturer which is designed for Engine bays and looks like the original KG cover that covers the fire wall

Just bought these today for the engine

colonel mustard ·

They loook hot! I've not seen them before, where from??

looks like twin dells or webbers going on there... 1916cc???

Scarab ·

those covers look great!! this is gonna be one wild ride I think!

Racermelb ·

Bought them out of the states.

The pic is from the seller, no not 1916cc, more like 2333cc 😎 will be running 44 Kads initially, but might need to upsize to 51 webbers down the track, I think i might have over done it on the cam and comp front🙄 but chasing 200 ish hp, still contemplating running the super charger as well, but gear boxes will be the limiting factor.

trickysimon ·

Cam, CR and Heads? 😎

Plus new billet crank, new case, mahle forged pistons, mahle race bearings, Chromoly Lightened Flywheel, blah blah blah

Being built by a guy who builds formula Vee motors for a living.

Should make the KG a little lively🤪

colonel mustard ·

swirl-polished combustion sounds like richard from vforce.... i may be wrong though.

Racermelb ·

No all Scat parts from the USA, he may use them as it seams that most of the parts being sold come from there

Mick058 ·

excellent work - enjoying the thread 👍

Racermelb ·

Just waiting for another part to arrive, very essential in light of the engines willingness to Rev

kg1962 ·

The wheels look awesome. Are they KPZs? Who refurbished them for you?

Racermelb ·

kg1962 wrote:The wheels look awesome. Are they KPZs? Who refurbished them for you?
Cheers

Yes they are KPZ's

The Chrome was done by Matt at Ferntree gully Platers, the wheels rerolled stripped and rebuilt by Mike from AJAX Wheels
and paint work and masking by myself

empi ·

Car looks nice , good to see Cams old car finally getting done.
Wheels suit (Bit jelous wanted the wheels to do the same to my ghia)
Whats with all the extra holes in the dash?
have to say Dynamat is great stuff just applied some to my type 3 inner decklid made a big difference.

MMMM taco , OG or repro?

Racermelb ·

Cheers Empi

Hoepfully Cam will drop through and have a look one day soon to have a look, will have to take him for a spin in it when it is done

Not sure what the holes in the dash were for, but will put them to good use for something.

The tacho is OG but has been reconditioned

Racermelb ·

Just arrived today my 2332cc Race engine, ready to bolt in, just need to get the 36Hp fan shroud painted and the rest of the tin ware painted then in it goes.

empi ·

Engine looks nice, u got the whole bad boy bubby thing going on there.

Really want to see the stroked motor with the rocker covers fit under the KG engine bay sides. I had empi alloy covers and Claudes buggies covers that wouldnt fit my car once lowered.

Racermelb ·

Couple of update pics, engine being assembled and the tin ware painted and fitted, cant wait to hear it make some noise.

Bizarre ·

Mate LOVE your work........but 2332cc race motor and dual singles??

What sort of carbs are they - PSITs??

Just surprised thay they will feed a BIG motor

Racermelb ·

The carbs are jetted up 44's, and I share your opinion as to if they will cope with the capacity of the engine, but they should do ok whilst it is being run in and sorted, if they dont cut it then I will be looking at an injection set up, but the over riding thing is I dont like the chances of 175's being able to put down the power it will make even with it not making its potential using the 44's.

Racermelb ·

Nearly ready to be fitted

colonel mustard ·

Engine looks hot! 🙂

as long as the carbs are jetted tuned right, they should be fine for gettting the car moving. then you can go up when you want it to be more serious.

Racermelb ·

My pulley set up is ready and being posted, should be here this week this is it😍

Bizarre ·

Cool !

Is that what you are getting 2L Fuchs??

tabney ·

Love that steering wheel! where did you get it?

Racermelb ·

Well after much absence from the Ghia I finally plucked up corage to do some more, not much, but something.
Trial fitted the seats and bolted the pulleys on the engine.

Have been too busy having fun on the Bike

Bizarre ·

so you keeping your baby??

Its looking schweet!

Racermelb ·

Yep will see it through to the end

Wannavee ·

Nice one Jon
Glad ya sticking with it.
Mine got inspected last week, all good, just pay the rego and I'm cruisin! 😎

Racermelb ·
