Well guys, after commenting on everyone else's projects etc. I thought it was about time to start a build thread for my 1967 Notchback.
This is going to be a long haul type of build for myself and my 4 sons, well, the two oldest ones anyway....ages 12 and 13.
It was purchased about a month ago from a fellow AVD member, Splitmeister, after seeing it advertised on Ebay.
So anyway....first stop on the road to getting this thing how we want it was to start stripping out the interior to see what we have to work with in regard to floor pans etc.
What we found was not great 馃槧 but it will give my sons and I an opportunity to do a bit of welding together 馃槀
Drivers side as purchased....
Drivers side floor pan....
Passengers side as purchased....
Passengers side floor pan....
Hopefully all the photos don't bore you all. I just really enjoy seeing what others are up to on their projects....hopefully you all feel the same 馃槀
More to come soon hopefully.
Thanks for looking, Scarab (aka: Paul)
Smiley 路
Of course the photos don't bore us! The more photos the better in my opinion, as the old saying goes "A picture is worth a thousand words"
Smiley
Scarab 路
馃槀 haha....cheers for that Smiley!
Well here's some more then....
Rear seat area as purchased....
Everything than can be removed, was then removed....
Then it was time to start on the dash area.
Dash as purchased....
And how it looks now....
Trying to find time to work on it is pretty hard, (I've had it a month and only removed the interior!!)...as you would all know, working full time, 4 kids, and a house to maintain....so updates will definitely be slow on this thread, but don't worry, the Notch isn't going anywhere and updates will happen....
like the old shampoo ad "It won't happen overnight, but it will happen!" 馃槀
Thanks for looking, Scarab (aka: Paul)

Great to see another one on the road to recovery Scarab As greedy said keep at it.
I'm 1/2 way through getting a fasty on the road again. Type 3's are great cars to work on, and even better to drive.
Love the kombi also, hope your boy's enjoy the VW's.
Scarab 路
thanks for the encouragement Greedy! That is how I've done the work so far...gone out to do a little bit for a half an hour and it has turned out to be longer each time......slow and steady wins the race! 馃槀
thanks to Andy too for the encouragement. do you have a thread on here for your fasty?? I have really enjoyed what I have done so far....I have found it quite relaxing. As for the boys enjoying the VW's....well, it was really their choice! My eldest wanted a beetle, but the second one wouldn't have any part of a beetle restoration, so we compromised (from my point of view anyway)....the eldest still got a VW, and the second one got somethng he was dead keen to do up as well.....the best of both worlds! 馃槀
Until next time, Scarab (aka:Paul)
colonel mustard 路
should have got the second oldest in a super fast super beetle and then seen if he was interested... 馃檪

Hi Paul, what a great family project. I love the early type 3's so I'll definitely be following your progress. My 2 year old daughter loves my funny little volksrod and is always around when I work on it, but she's not really much help : ) Must be good getting some father son(s) time and achieving something at the same time.
Keep up the good work.
Tim.
Doctor 路
Looks like a cool project! What are your plans for it?
Great work getting the son's involved, my old man wanted nothing to do with this dub! Last one though it was always good to spend some time with him and work on it...
I read in your other thread that you will be registering it, in SA, its easy as piss, take in the papers, pay them, and off you go!
Scarab 路
Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated!
Well Colonel, I didn't think my kids would ever be happy with anything old to do up.....I used to be the Spare Parts Manager in a prestige vehicle dealership and the kids were used to me bringing home flash cars, so the idea of doing up an old one took a bit of convincing 馃槀 but as Tim said, the father son time is pretty rewarding in itself.
Glad to hear your daughter is interested in the volksrod Tim....coz I know I definitely am 馃槀 I have been reading your thread with each update!!
Well Doctor....normally the rego thing would be that easy, but in this instance, I dont have any papers for it 馃槧 but I have the original number plates....so I believe that I will still need to go through Regency for a chassis number check etc. I dont expect too many hassles, because everything will be like new when the time comes to do that. I intend checking into it fairly soon though before I get too far into the build, just to be sure on the details.
Again, thanks for reading guys. I figured I would start a thread for my own benefit to keep a track of what I have done and if anyone else is interested, then thats great too, so thanks for the encouraging words!! 馃槀
Thanks again, Scarab (aka:Paul)
Doctor 路
I had no papers for mine when i re regoed mine, grabbed the form from the Transport SA place, put down the engine number, the rego number and the other details that it needed including "NOT RECORDED" in the chassis number section and i was good to go... As long as the car isnt reported stolen and has no defects on it you will have no problems, and no visits to regency required!
Scarab 路
hey, thanks for that mate......looks like I'll be doing a trip to the local rego office to get me a form!! 馃憤馃憤馃憤

I can't believe how many people have commented on my Notch......everybody is so keen, hope i don't let you all down with the quality of work 馃槀
I have read so many threads on here that really spur you on to better things, I am really wanting to go the extra mile on the Notch and make it really something......time will tell i guess 馃榿 Thanks for the encouragement.
I am that excited about my Notch that I can't stop talking about it...so much so that my wife is totally sick of hearing about it!!馃槀
Thanks again guys! You guys ROCK!

That's the great thing about this forum, everyone is always offering each other advice and encouragement. I love it!
Keep up the good work mate, looking froward to seeing your updates.

Scarab 路
hey, thanks Smiley....I actually just finished reading your thread, nice work!! 馃槈
unfortunately, updates will be slow on mine (due to finances etc.) but there is heaps to do that wont require cash....just time and effort, so I will update as often as possible hopefully.
I would prefer to work on it as often as possible, if only to keep the enthusiasm up in my boys....you know what kids are like 馃槀
Hopefully get a bit more done on the weekend......hopefully!!! 馃槀
colonel mustard 路
going full resto scarab? staying original? or going modified... or highly modified... any specific plans yet? what do you like that you want to .. emulate?
I love the type 3's, and i would love to get one.... But i think im too stuck on supers to go for anything else..
Scarab 路
Well colonel, where do I start?? 馃榿 At the moment, the work is aimed at stripping as much out as possible, so I can do a body/pan split, that way I can restore the floor pan and do it properly....I'm not a small bloke, and I think it will be easier to do the pans without a body on it 馃槈
The plan is to have a fairly stock looking exterior, but in a fairly bright color (haven't decided on colour, but the orange as shown in my signature is still on the table as an option).
I plan to slam it as low as legally possible (I'm too old to have hassles with the cops every time I drive it 馃槀). I am LOVING the look of BRMs at the moment....thanks Izac for putting that idea in my head (your square is looking great)!!!!馃槀 but time will tell on that one too. I saw some full polished ones recently and LOOOOOOVE them!
As for modified/highly modified.....well I am wanting it to move along, and a modified motor is on the cards.....I have driven some very quick cars in my working life (Ferraris / Maseratis etc.) so I dont think I could do it to myself and leave the engine stock....even though I have NO IDEA how it goes with a stock engine coz I have never driven it....but I am not expecting a lot from a standard type 3. It will all be a learning curve for me as this is my first VW, but I have fallen in love with this Notch!!
I want the interior to be as comfortable as possible, without being too crazily modified, just a nice cool look and nice to drive (but I guess we all want that, don't we guys 馃槀)
I do a lot of drawing for relaxation....so I am dying to do my own rendition of what I want my car to be....once that is done, I'll post it for you to have a look at.
All suggestions for my Notch will be gratefully received, and any criticism will be carefully considered.....then I will still do it the way I want! 馃槀
colonel mustard 路
Just check out Troys fasty for power inspiriation.
Sounds good mate, cant wait to see the progress. its fun stuff these vw's 馃檪
I am also falling for the BRM's currently... love the tire combo that izac is running up front, looks sweet.

If your gunna slam it, 3 splines!!!!
Your gunna love cruising in that car when its done, in the dub, im happy to put around at 10k's under and let everyone go past me...
Scarab 路
Thanks mate, yeh, I am really looking forward to being able to cruise in it.....but that is a LONG way off 馃槀
I am really looking forward to Volksfest also....should be great for some ideas 馃榿
You'd be cruisin' down wouldn't ya Doctor?? I expect to see that beauty dressed in satin down at the Port!
Scarab 路
got out and did a bit of work on the Notch over the weekend.....spot the difference 馃槀
As bought....
After an hours work on Saturday with my 13 year old son....
the brown rust looking spots near the door appears to be only surface staining, the inner guards are suprisingly rust free!! Its looking like nearly all my rust is confined to the floor pans!! CHEERING!! 馃槀
One naked front end 馃榿
Scarab 路
we then got out and did a bit more on Sunday arvo....
as bought....
[/img]
my eldest son, hard at work 馃槀
bumper off....
rh side done....
lh side done....
back end basically done....
The photos don't really do it justice. While it looks pretty rusty under the rear guards, I am pretty sure it is only surface stuff, that should clean up well. There is only one hole that I can find that is about the size of a 20c piece, and another that is about 5mm wide.....I am counting my blessings on this. I think we have really found a good one!! 馃槀
Getting there slowly but surely, but my son is LOVING it! He is continually pushing me out to the shed to work on it 馃槀 Very proud of his attitude.
Thanks for looking, Scarab (aka: Paul)
Smiley 路
Looks like you're making some great headway Paul!
And it's good to see that there is no real rust yet, looks like you picked up a nice solid car.
Smiley
Scarab 路
Yeh, thanks Smiley, it is moving along.....albeit rather slowly in my opinion.
I am trying do do at least a little bit every weekend, and now that South Oz has switched to daylight saving (WOOHOO!) I hope to get out and do a bit at night too.
I am fairly restricted for space at the moment, and am only working in a carport. It is double width and double depth, but it has a lot of stuff crammed under it (unnecessary stuff like the wifes Pajero 馃槀 ). Plans are underway to get rid of a lot of this non-VW stuff (unfortunately the Pajero will have to stay) and I am going to seal off the carport with a couple of roller doors in the next few weeks. I am fairly hesitant to dismantle too much more on the Notch while the carport is open to the street, but once the doors are up I will drop the engine and whip the body off the pan so we can get stuck into the rust repairs on the pan and restoration / modification of the suspension and running gear.
It all sounds very grand, but in my head it is already done 馃檮 I just need to get it done in real time!!!馃槀
Smiley 路
I know how you feel working out of a carport. I'm allowed to use one side of a double carport, but only when mum's car isn't parked in there! So there's been a fair bit of carrying a floorpan inside and out. Luckily it's a stripped buggy pan so it's light as hell. I don't have to worry about stuff getting taken like you do though, cause our house is out of the way a bit more, and not visible from any roads.
Smiley
Scarab 路
Another couple of hours work today....
Front luggage bonnet removed, fuel tank removed and the full wiring loom removed (that was fun, considering the engine is still in place 馃槀 )
Spot the differences....as purchased on the left and as it stands on the right.....please excuse the rubbish quality of the photos 馃槧
So currently I have 15 hours work invested and we have a fully stripped front end, fully stripped interior, the wiring loom removed, the rear guards and bumper removed. all that is left now is to pull the motor, remove the engine cover and doors and I'll be ready to split the body from the pan 馃槀 I REALLY have to get the roller doors up before doing any more....but I am enjoying working on the Notch too much!!! 馃槀
Thanks again for looking! Scarab (aka: Paul)

Scarab 路
Hey Matt, you obviously know Andrew (Splitmeister) then?? 馃榾
Thanks for the offer on to help track down some parts, that would be GREATLY appreciated!! Let me know if you know of any good condition bumpers....Im not fussed about having to re-chrome them, just as long as they are straight....and of course the floorpans are an issue, so if you know of a good pan, you can let me know on that one too 馃榿
Mate, can I also say, I LOVE your restocal bug, that is one awesome looking ride mate!!
Whereabouts in Adelaide are you, we should catch up some time to have a chat about where I can get bits and pieces for my Notch, seeing as I'm fairly new to VWs and you have obviously been around them a lot longer than me!!

Hi paul im very certain my brother has a heap of bumpers here he doesn`t live here but all his stuff still does!!
we have a bit of type 3 stuff still here but ill have to ask him what he`s doing with it all.
I am in Elizabeth just down the road from you! Yes i know splitmeister very well he was here lastnight haha bought a set of brm wheels off my dad.

hey nice work Mattie, I would love to know what your bro has and if he wants to part with any of it please mate! My bumpers are mixed, I have one with overriders and one without, an dthey are both a bit sad, so I was hoping to at least get a matching set....not too fussed if its with or without overriders....just as long as they are straight馃榾 I would really appreciate you checking into it for me.
so are the BRMs going on Andrews bug....or something else? He had Radars on it last time I saw it. you guys havent got any more wheels you want to get rid of have you??
we will have to catch up sometime definitely, seeing as you are so close to my place.....

Scarab 路
So anyway guys, had an hour free on Sunday so whipped out to he carport to do a bit on the Notch......
RH door removed.....
LH door removed.....
Engine lid removed.....
I also started removing anything that was going to stop the engine from coming out easily, like the dipstick tube, the air intake bellows etc. so hopefully, the engine will be out on the ground the next time I have an hour or so free.......
I know, I know, it shouldn't take an hour to get one of these out, but this will be my first time doing it, and I will have a "helper" in the form of my 13 year old, which might actually slow me down, rather than make it easier. When he is helping I like to take it slower so I can explain why things are done in the order I do them, and also I try to explain what the different parts do etc. so he learns while he is helping....good in theory 馃槀 sometimes not so good in practice, but he is really getting into it! I am very proud of his dedication to the project.
Once the engine is out, we will be looking forward to whipping the body off the pan....woohoo....exciting!! 馃槀
Sorry for the boring photos and story, but every project starts with this sort of stuff I guess.
Thanks for looking,
Scarab (aka: Paul)
colonel mustard 路
looking good paul. the body is not too shabby 馃檪
Scarab 路
cheers bro....yeh, the Notch is a pretty solid old girl.
All the bits that look rusty on the outside of the body are all pretty much surface rust and/or staining....all of which will come up a treat with a good sand and a good prime.
I am debating on whether I need to brace the body internally before removing it from the pan....what do you think guys? Those of you that have removed your bodies, did you brace it, and if not, did it flex a great deal?
Any advice greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Scarab (aka: Paul)
Smiley 路
I know that for a Beetle you normally don't brace it unless it's a convertible. I can't speak for the weight of a Type 3, but it took 4 people to lift the body of my old Baja that I finished stripping last weekend, so make sure you have a few mates around.
Smiley
Scarab 路
Yeh, I thought I may need to entice some mates around with a BBQ or something, then spring it on them before they can sneak away! 馃槀

Scarab 路
Thanks Jason, I appreciate your thoughts.
Not sure about the good hands comment though 馃榿 Just doing what I think needs to be done....hope it all works out in the end 馃憤 I am REALLY looking forward to pulling off the body, but I have to get rid of an old Liteace van I have sitting in the driveway before my wife will let me make more mess....and putting up the roller doors would also be a good idea before splitting the pan and body.....I am just impatient.
I am laughing pretty hard at the moment, they are in the process of putting up the driving age here in Adelaide, so my son is a bit upset 馃榿 Seeing as he now has a couple of more years to wait, I told him to get a part time job and buy his own car to do up so we can work on them both at the same time.....he's warming to the idea.....he wants an early Type 3 Square, so we'll see how we go on that front.

Fuel gauge, oil and generator warning lights
Scarab 路
Thanks Ryan....if you are going to watch this thread, you will be watching for a while....its gonna be a long haul before its on the road again 馃榾
Thanks to Jason for answering Ryans question about the gauge.....it would have tested my memory quite a bit, i have never driven this car, and only had it for a couple of weeks before i pulled the dash apart and put all the parts in boxes, so I would have had to REALLY test the memory with that one!! 馃槀
....I think it also has L & R indicator lights on that gauge too doesn't it Jason??
The only progress I have with the thread at the moment is that my new cement mixer has arrived from WA (Ebay purchase)......how does this relate to my Notch I hear you all ask......well, my carport is probably the width of three cars, but only has only been concreted enough for 2 cars, so I am going to concrete the rest of the width over to the fence line, to give me that bit of extra room to use once the roller doors are up.....boring update I know, but in my mind, it is still progress!!馃槀
Thanks for reading,
Scarab (aka: Paul)
electricmonk 路
Yes the early style has the indicators and I "think" the lights for lights on and high beam. I have not seen the gauges from a 70's car but at least for the 72/73 those lights are in the speedo housing.
Doctor 路
Yep, indicators, Lights, high beams, oil, generator, and something else i think, im too lazy to get up and look at mine, and in the pic i have, they are covered!
spdterence 路
Personally I like the burnt orange - or whatever colour you have on your signature Scarab. I think that will look pretty cool. Have you seen one in the flesh this colour? terry
Scarab 路
thanks for the pic Doc, it jogs a few memories of when I pulled mine out and stored them, thanks! 馃憤
and Terry, I have seen a couple of pics of overseas (ie:USA) Notches in orange recently, and while I think it looks great in the Selecta pic in my signature, I wasn't all that impressed with the real thing....although it was only in photos off the net that I saw these other Notches in the orange, and sometimes those type of photos dont give a true representation of the real colour.
I have also been toying with a real bright silver like you see on Mercs and high end vehicles (I know that sounds wierd.... 'bright silver', but I just mean not a grey 馃槀) and Colonel Mustard suggested a bright red ( I like this idea quite a bit, but I think my wife is over the whoile red thing, as I have collected a LOT of Ferrari paraphernalia over the years after working at the local dealership and I think she has seen too much of it for her to get too enthusiastic about a red car in the driveway 馃槀 )
Still undecided though, and open to other suggestions / examples.
Cheers,
Scarab (aka: Paul)

Im thinking mine be in need of a respray soon...
But flat yellow is for mine, so stay away from it!
As for orange... How about this... Might throw you back in the direction of orange....
Dont ask for more, no idea where there are anymore... Its not a notch, (its better!!!) but its orange...
colonel mustard 路
That yellow is nice..... dunno if it suits a square.... (have you seen the ace air cooled square???)

Im in too deep on the dark side to go orange now, keep the dream alive!

Scarab 路
nice work on that Doc.....love the full length roll top! You cant beat a 3 in a bright colour with all the chrome, unless its satin black of course eh Doc??? 馃槀
I have been trawling through The Samba Notch gallery....up to page 100, out of over 400!! That site is mental, seriously addictive stuff!
Trying to see what colour combinations work and what dont. Orange looks awesome on that square, but Ive seen some real bad Notch efforts in orange.....
What to do?? Colour is a LONG way off, but I think its something that I need to plan early on in the build..... to make sure its a cohesive package.
I would rather have all parts planned ahead of schedule and have them all work together in one awesome package, rather than a lot of small ideas put together on the fly throughout the build to make a mish mash of a ride that doesnt deliver the package I am dreaming of.
Just thinking out loud here, thanks for listening 馃槀 so to sum up....its really messing with my head this colour choice thing!!! 馃槀

I just looked at those photos again Doc......I want a square now!! THANKS FOR NOTHING!!!!馃槵馃槵馃榾馃榾

Its the right thing to do.... Or, have one of each! I couldnt live without a wagon again, i hated all my sedans, couldnt stand the beetle, had to have a wagon... and im so stoked it was a Dub Square! Now to find me a Bay Panel.... this could be expensive...
Scarab 路
a friend of mine just bought a bay panel for a grand....running registered and in reasonable condition....I was spewing, he is not really even into VW's!!!!!
my eldest son REALLY likes the idea of a square for his first car, so i might get my wish to have both in the driveway after all.
Scarab (aka: Paul)
Doctor 路
thats just not fair... If he wants to sell it, ill buy it... Would kill for another panel...
My first car was a square, was awesome, if i could find that one again id consider buying it back! So much better as first car's than anything else, they arnt exactly powerful, so he cant get himself into to much trouble, they ooze cool, and have more style than anything else that his mates will have... plus, he can dump it on its arse for free! Instant street cred!

My wife actually said I was wasting my time rubbing back all the dirt....her words exactly were "Aren't you gonna take it back to bare metal anyway?"......!!!!!! Have any of you guys ever had your wives actually ENCOURAGE you to take your project all the way?? I would have thought that going back to a full bare metal rebuild would be something you'd keep from your wife for as long as possible.....so they don't get annoyed with the amount of time and money you're spending on it! Man I love my wife!! Thanks Beck!
Anyway, hopefully more pics after the weekend guys,
Cheers for the interest though

I know mate, its a killer at this time of year for our family. My wife is a piano teacher and consequently, only works when school is in.....Christmas holidays are the WORST for us!! With the expense of Christmas, and day to day living with 4 kids and a home to maintain, there just isnt any money for the hobbies!! 馃ゲ ....but school goes back this week so we'll be back on track again soon.
We had a plasma TV, and a normal TV both blow up within days of each other in the two weeks before Christmas....then a couple of weeks ago our fridge went on the blink, 馃お so we really havent had a great time financially lately, but am confident we will have things sorted in the next 3 or 4 weeks and money can be put aside again for the Notch project....woohoo!馃憤

Oh, and I forgot to mention something you might be interested in Colonel.....we might be buying another VW in the next few months.....a beetle this time though!!
Can't say too much at this stage, but it was bought new by a woman and was then passed on to her son when she died. He has used it daily for the last 20 or so years to drive 10k's to work and back every day and he wants to sell it sometime this year. You would think that after having driven it daily for so long, it would be a bit trashed, but it has been regularly maintained and the body is in what I would consider to be exceptional condition for its age. i am quite excited about it really. I know I should just put the money into my Notch, but I think it is one of those cars, that if I passed on it, I would deeply regret it afterwards. The owner has promised to contact me first before advertising it and has also mentioned that he doesn't think it is worth anything, so I am expecting to get it for next to nothing!!!....fingers crossed!! 馃榿 Time will tell though!

It is my belief that it looks like a 68 or 69. It has late style bumpers, no vents behind rear quarter windows, rounded hood and engine covers like a late one, so I was thinking it must be around 68ish...where the early chick started putting on weight, but isn't quite a fat chick! 馃槀馃槀馃槀

If we do make the purchase, I might get him to join up here and he can enlighten us all on how to build a VW! 馃榿 Time will tell.

Well, its been over a month without a post.....slack aren't I??? 馃槀
Have been real busy the last few weeks with work, family....etc.etc.....
So anyway, enough of the excuses, what have I been up to on the Notch? Well....not too much unfortunately apart from spending a little money on it.
I purchased a nice engine cover/deck lid from Doctor (thanks Chris, you are a champion!!) My old lid was pretty rusty in the bottom corners, and Doctor had one from the white Notch he purchased for spares.....very happy with that spend, it should save a lot of hassle when it comes time for paint.
I also received a set of wheel trolleys, these were a birthday gift from my awesome wife, Beck.....they are like go-jax, but are a fixed style. These consist of a trolley for each wheel of the car, supported by a castor on each corner of the trolley......this allows you to have the car up on all 4 trolleys and then you can move the car any which way you want to, fantastic for working in small areas!! Unfortunately, it is bucketing down with rain at the moment, the first time inages, so I can't get any decent photos, but rest assured, I will post some photos as soon as weather allows.

Hi Paul,
Yeah I remember, you were into MK1 Cortinas. My bro just sold his MK1 2 door cortina last week. Was a very nice body and seam welded and ready to race.
Bright looks great but I still like the classic colours like bronze, mango green, gold and the metallic brown that early porsche's came out in.
Beetle is going slow, atcually standstill as I am building ahouse at the moment and it is taking up all my room and time.

I think you should go metallic, not flat plastic solids if you go bright.

I have been checking out your house blog from time to time....looks like a real nice place mate, well done! We are planning on doing a bit of renovation to our place and I expect that the Notch will come to a relative standstill for a while....but I hope not.
I like your thinking on the colours mate....in fact, I have been eyeing off a lot of VW sites checking out the Mango green cars.....tasty colour in my opinion.
Still very undecided....but plenty of time to decide before its ready for paint.

Soooooo....after doing NOTHING for ages....and watching other people's thread progressing (yes Smiley, I mean YOU!! 馃槀 ),
I thought I best get out and do something over the last couple of days....so here's a few progress photos for all those playing at home. 馃榿
Firstly, a photo of the wheel trolleys that my wife got for my birthday last month....four of these little beauties make spinning the car a breeze!! 馃槒
My wife wanted to take all the kids out yesterday, so I thought...."I've got a couple of hours before she wants to go, I might just rip out the back window"....yeh, like I put a lot of thought into that!!!馃檯
Here is the result....馃槵 DOH!!!!
I thought that mine was a standard rear screen....obviously I had the reasonably rare 1,000,000 piece screen!! 馃槀
I'm pretty sure these were released by VW as a 'space saver screen' so you could keep a spare in a bag in the boot! 馃槀馃槀馃槀馃槀

After cleaning up all the broken glass etc. (what a pain!)
I decided that I'd done enough damage for one day 馃槀
This was the end result,
Today's mission was to remove the engine. Suprisingly, considering I have never removed a VW engine, it was insanely EASY!!
My oldest son Keith was there for the action and we had it out and packed away in the garage in an hour....from go to whoa! Pretty happy with that! 馃憤
So, here is the empty engine bay
And here is the engine tucked away in the garage....until it gets some attention down the track a little.
Pretty happy with the results this weekend.
Thanks for looking

YAY!!!
I've been hanging out for this day!
Good to see you're getting back into it mate!
Don't feel too bad about the screen. I managed to break a Superbug front windscreen when I was stripping the can. Broke as I was pulling it out even though I had already cut the rubber off the outside. Don't know how a pulling it off.

Pulling engines in a Volksie is always easy!!
Especially in a Baja!
Good to see you got the glass all cleaned up.
Smiley 馃檪
Scarab 路
HAHAHA.....cheers mate. If you've been hanging out for this day....you need to get out more!! 馃槀
I was so happy to be working on it again, and wasn't even that annoyed about the screen. I mean I was upset a little, but just working on the Notch again put me on a high.
It looks like I might have organised a replacement already, so it doesn't matter toooooo much I guess.
I was genuinely suprised at the ease of engine removal. I have pulled plenty of engines over the years, from Minis and Mk1 Cortinas, right through to the big ones like you work on Smiley, Cat Dozers etc. and this would have to be the EASIEST by far. I could have left my son to do it on his own and I think he would have been fine....in fact, he did do most of the removal of bolts etc. especially the ones underneath (he's a LOT smaller than me! 馃榿 ) I was just there to make sure it didn't fall out and was kept on the jack for most of the descent.
Very happy with the results. We will possibly remove the hood lining tomorrow. I want to get it out in one piece. Despite it being ripped, I still want to keep it to compare to a new one when the time comes.
Thanks for looking,
Scarab (aka: Paul)

I am soooooo mad at the moment, I just spent 20 minutes doing an update of my Notch on here and the stupid modem logged me out for some reason and I lost the lot!!!! AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! 馃槵馃槵
Anyway, so lets try again.
OK, so I think I might have a problem. I have worked on the Notch 3 days straight!!!! Someone call the Guiness Book People, we might have a recond on our hands! 馃槀馃槀馃槀
Anyway, after the debacle of the rear screen exploding before I could get it out, I thought I'd cut the front one out....much better!!
This one came out in one piece....WOOHOO!!馃憤
I then thought that removing the hoodlining would be the way to go. Don't get me wrong, the old one is STUFFED!! but I wanted to keep it in one piece so I could compare it to a new one when the time comes. It came out fairly easily, despite the sun making it very brittle in places, especially the pillar covers.
And an example of how the 'A' pillar cover has been destroyed by the sun....it is EXTREMELY brittle!
I was pretty happy with the condition of the window channels front and rear....here's a couple of shots of the rear channel.....
And here's a shot of the only point of issue. Its front passenger side of the windscreen / dashboard area. Not a big deal, but I'm real thankful that its the only issue with the turret of the car.
Anyway....quite a satisfying weekend on all fronts. Just that little bit further ahead of where I was a couple of days ago.
Thanks for looking,

Last night I was looking for something to do on the Notch.
I know I won't be needing these for a LOOOOOOONG time yet, but I thought I'd see how my gauges would clean up.
First up, the clock.....I don't even know if it works, but it still deserved a clean up....so, this is what it looked like before....
....and this is after a clean of the face, respray of the bezel and a polish of the rim....much better in my opinion anyway. 馃槉
It doesn't look too bad I reckon....
Next up was the feul gauge and warning light assembly....
A before shot for you all to see how nasty it was....
And what it looks like now....
Another before shot from another angle....
....and what it looks like now from the same angle....
Next on the agenda was the speedo.
This was particularly crusty looking and needed a fair bit of work.
I am particularly happy with the results!!

Really been looking forward to sharing these next couple of photos....I am so stoked with the way the speedo came out!
The original speedo was pretty crusty with an aftermarket decal stuck on to convert MPH to KPH....wasn't real keen on that! 馃お
Anyway, here's the before photo, take particular notice of the decal and the "patina"of the housing etc.:
Now for the big reveal.....polish of the rim, respray of the bezel, removal of the decal (that was a pain to remove and get the glue removed!! 馃槵 ) and a general overall clean.
Are you ready for this.....
oh yeh....real happy with that!!!馃憤馃憤馃憤馃憤
Another before shot for you all....

I think my Notch will possibly have the looks, but wont be able to back it up with the performance....at least until the funds recover from the body/chassis resto etc.
Paul
Scarab 路
Well....another step forward finally.
I have been checking out my options lately on what to do with my rusty floor pans. As a lot of you will know, Type 3 pans don't exist is reproduced form....well, until recently anyway.
Up until now, the only option was to use Karmann Ghia pans and modify them. Recently, Gerson announced that they were going to reproduce the Type 3 pans....finally someone is giving the Type 3 model run so love!!馃槏 Anyway, I went down the track of investigating how to get some of these over to Australia with the help of Elton from Splitparts. While I was waiting on so pricing from him, Andrew (aka: Splitmeister here on AVD and the previous owner of my Notch) let me know of a pan that he had sitting at his place that was pretty nice and offered it to me at a VERY reasonable price, considering it came with another Notch body on it, along with front and rear suspension and brakes (and gearbox too of course).
Picked it up yesterday and I am VERY happry with the look of the pans so far, considering I have only had a very quick look at them....but I am sure they are good, solid, useable pans, for a lot less than what I was getting prepared to pay for repro pans from overseas.
Anyway, the best way I guess is for me to show you some pics of the pans....
Here is an overall view of the entire floor assy.
The plan at the moment is to cut out these pans from the donor vehicle and weld them into my original chassis so that I retain the original chassis number etc. Hope the plan works....I guess slow and steady will be the name of the game when cutting out and replacing. I am also planning on using a couple of sections from the donor body to replace the small amount of rusted areas in my original.
Finally, here's a quick shot of my two Notches tucked away under my carport, along with a friends Beetle that I am cleaning up for him to sell. Its a one family owner 69, and quite a tidy solid car....floor pans are immaculate!! If anyone is interested, feel free to PM me 馃憤

I was going to buy the beetle, the guy offered it to me for a very good price, but I told him that it was actually worth more than what he offered it to me for and I would help him clean it up and get the best price possible for him. I seem to be able to help others rather than getting my own stuff sorted out for sale! 馃槀 I will get there eventually though.
My eldest was VERY keen for me to grab the beetle for him.....but I felt like I would be ripping off the guy if I bought it. I couldn't scrape up any more cash for him, but thats OK. The last couple of weekends I have spent installing roller doors across the front of my carport, and now that it is all secure, I feel a bit more at ease with getting stuck into the car and not having parts and tools on display for the neighbourhood to see.
Anyway....here's a few shots from the morniings work. My son Keith was real keen and features in a couple of the photos..馃槀
Here is the Notch that I bought for the floor pans. It was pretty rusty....the sills were full of rust and bog, but that doesnt matter as I am only using sections of the body to repair the small amount of rust in my body....
Just for fun, Keith and I thought we'd see what it would look like turned into a convertible.....馃槀馃槀馃槀
My boy can't help himself!! 馃檯
And rockin' some 13" Cosmics 馃榾
And here is the pan I am planning on using instead of my rusted out one....nice and clean so far, pretty happy with it.
....and of course, Keith trying it out. If it had an engine he would have wanted to go for a blast around the block!!
Hopefully might have some more to show you all soon!
Thanks for watching,

Good work. Really getting stuck into it now, hey. Kinda sad to see one notch getting the chop, but it's obviously for the greater good.
I remember years ago seeing a web site dedicated to someone's beetle resto and the guy drove around the block on the pan only - just seats and running gear, no body. I think he had to make some contraption in place of the fuel tank. It looked pretty funny.

hahaha....yeh, my son got the idea from a friend of mine on Facebook.
He's just finished a pan resto in the States and posted a video of him driving the bare pan up and down his street.
Looks like it would be heaps of fun!! 馃槀
By the way....I really feel there would have been too much rust in the donor Notch for it to come back to the road (although I have seen worse being restored on some UK VW sites), not saying it would be impossible, but not really worth it in the end. It has given its life to save another. 馃榿

Hey, looks like you're making good progress 馃憤 How hard did you find it to remove the body from the pan? as I think that could be on the agenda for next weekend Tasmanian weather permitting
Scarab 路
real easy mate..... basically a row of bolts round the outside, a couple over the front beam and a couple under the rear seat.
was pretty awkward with just me and a 14 year old boy....maybe get a couple of mates to help you....its not real heavy, just awkward.
Good luck! 馃憤

dude, if you can make 13 inch Ford stud pattern fit your Square, then have at it!! 馃槀
They are going to be sold to help finance my Notch wheels....one day 馃榾

well, its been a while, guess its time for an update 馃槉
went back to stripping out the donor pan and pulled the front and rear ends out ready to strip the pan.
Amazing the amount of camber you can get when you disconnect the spring plates! 馃槀
Here's the front end still attached:
....and then rolled clear of the pan:
....and one last one of my son....I caught him sleeping under the pan (well, I thought he was sleeping....he was definitely suprised when I photographed him! Check out his face!! 馃槀 )
Thanks for looking! 馃槝馃槀

Nice work Paul. Good to see some progress mate.
Is your notch going to be running that much camber once it's all back together? Nice and slammed.

Thanks for the interest Smiley!
Any progress is good progress....right?? 馃槀
I would love to run that much camber....but would be hard to get past the Police down here if it was that low!
The plan is for moderate lowering (at this stage....until I get addicted to LOW 馃槀)
Scarab (aka: Paul)
PS: was a shame to see the fron of your car cracked on the wildlife mate....but I guess its built to be driven right? Stuff like that happens unfortunately. 馃槈

Yeah. It'll be repaired, but only after I finish bracing the front bar and add a skid plate for future protection.

hey Smiley!!!
Thanks for the interest.....I thought everyone would have forgotten my Notch by now.....I almost have!! 馃槩
Been craazy busy lately with work, family and now study too. Doing a Diploma in Graphic Design/Commercial Art, so any spare time I have is sucked up doing assignments for that.
Notch is still waiting patiently in the garage for some attention.....and it will get some, just not sure when at this stage. I havent lost the love for it!!
I have done a few bits and pieces to it when time permits. I have started on prepping the donor pan halves by drilling out spot welds etc. and getting them to bare pans. Im at work at the moment (ssshhh, dont tell anyone that Im surfing the net while at work, lol)....but if I remember, I'll update you with a few photos.
Thanks again Smiley, really appreciate you draggin up my thread to see whats going on. Yours is looking great as always!! While I dont post a great deal on here anymore, I still lurk regularly and keep myself upto date with your project.
Cheers,

Good to hear you're still kicking around mate.
And glad to see that you're still keen on the Notch.
I hope you have some more time for it soon and we get to see some updates.
Graphic Design is cool, might be some sweet funky mods you can do to the notch to apply your degree 馃榾
