The Doc's Dub (56k will hate this!)

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/79193/the-docs-dub-56k-will-hate-this

Doctor ·

So, given the fact that i bought the Dub off a Fellow forum member, and i have since buying it encountered a few members in the real world, i figured i would post a build thread... Being a Photographer, the first post in the thread will be very Pic Heavy...

I have a build thread on another forum, so i will post the relevant bits on here... For a more in depth look at what ive done up to here, visit this link... http://forums.eurocca.net/showthread.php?t=34760

That gives a bit of background around the build too... But enough of that, a few pics of where it started, and where its at now...

My first Square

On the Trailer for the ride home

Where it sat for the rebuild

Big bonus in the back, with my sisters brake specialist doing his inspection

Interior before pickup

After the interior was emptied (No shots of it chockas on the drive back)

Gauge Collection

Scored these off Ebay, fuggin heavy, but worth it...

On the road... Kind of, first drive...

Stripping the bonnet back

Officially on the road...

New pedal Rubbers...

Sticker on the rear window...

Stickers for the dash...

Bit of brass love...

Bit bored one night...

New seatbelts went in... Interior almost finished...

As it sits now...

And a pic of what it came from in Matt's Backyard....

Now, onto where its going... Lowering is my next step, the exhaust will be changed for this, it scrapes on EVERYTHING as it is... will get a setup similar to another forum members, and the bonnet will be getting finished, finding bog in the nose im not sure what im going to do, i was originally going to take it back to bare metal and let it surface rust for that Rat Rod look, but finding bog its not quite going to work that way! I have found some paint that gives that rust look very easily, so i think ill end up going that route...

I have a pair of spotlights for the front of it too, just need to get an auto elec to go over the electrics and wire them in... Im also looking into converting the spotlights into HID for a bit of extra light!

The rims will be powdercoated red asap as well

Once a few little "Natural Ventilation Holes" are fixed, i will put a stereo in it too...

Scarab ·

Nice work Doctor!! Wow a twin engined square🤓 😂 now wouldnt that be a ride!

I am loving your black and white photos too....very cool!😎

should look sweet with some red wheels!

natural vetilation holes 😂 thats GOLD!! 😂😂😂😂

trickysimon ·

I like the colour scheme 😏

DU88EN ·

awesome setup, is the steering wheel bent or is that distorted from your fisheye? how wide is that lens btw?

Goitsy ·

Great photos there Doctor. The wagon has come up well.👍

Yeah, i had to get a shot of the two engines basically on top of one another... might be a long term project that one, twin engined, 4wd......

Thanks
trickysimon wrote:I like the colour scheme 😏
🙂 It gets some attention, its mainly the non car people that dont like it... As i said, bonnet will be painted soon!
DU88EN wrote:awesome setup, is the steering wheel bent or is that distorted from your fisheye? how wide is that lens btw?
Cheers mate, the steering wheel does seem to have a bend to it, toward the rear of the car, but driving it you wouldnt know, and looking at it in the car, i dont really notice it, the fisheye accentuates it alot though

The FE is a 10mm f/2.8 Sigma lens, absolutely brilliant lens
Goitsy wrote:Great photos there Doctor. The wagon has come up well.👍
Cheers mate, its almost finished! Then, Volksfest i think...

matt ·

nice!!!!!
matt

VWFREAK ·

Nice, looks sweet as for a late type3 👍 Awesome touch with the bonnet.

Wannavee ·

Hey Doc
I was the guy in the van that had a chat with ya on Goodwood rd.
Looks great on the road fella!
Hanging to see it lowered

Doctor ·

Yep, i recognized the name when i saw you had posted, cheers mate, once its slammed its going to have some serious presence on the road... I have a few plans for Volkfest too, see if they come together now! When you were behind me i accelerated to let you past and a throttle linkage came off, the car would have sounded horrible!!

Cheers for all the comments guys!

Wannavee ·

Haha,it seemed to go pretty well to me! Looks mad on the road, love it
Look forward to seeing it at Volksfest

Doctor ·

Thanks mate 🙂

Im really looking forward to volksfest, and i have some plans for it, to see what sort of response the car gets! Ive been to plenty of car shows, and shot a lot of showcars for mates, but i think this thing just oozes cool and should get a great response on the day 🙂

Heres a few random shots i fired off today...

Theres a great shot of the exhaust dragging on the ground when i went in a driveway when the camera was set up for the last shot...

And the setup for the last pic...

matt ·

I want it back lol looks great!!

Doctor ·

matt wrote:I want it back lol looks great!!
Haha... Ive been expecting this! And NO WAY!!

But, you can drive it on the volksfest though mate! 😂

izac ·

looks great man.

but yeah, you gotta do something about that exhaust 😂

Doctor ·

izac wrote:looks great man.

but yeah, you gotta do something about that exhaust 😂
Cheers man

Yeah, the exhaust allready has a broken bracket from scraping when i go in and out of driveways... its on the cards for this week hopefully!

matt ·

you got 1 on the other motor or maybe a stinger?????😁
matt

Doctor ·

matt wrote:you got 1 on the other motor or maybe a stinger?????😁
matt
Yeah, i reckon the one on the other motor will scrape as well, will probably go custom, something like this one

Photos belong to another forum member on here...

Doctor ·

matt wrote:you got 1 on the other motor or maybe a stinger?????😁
matt
You know Matt, your bloody right! Just looked at the photo of the engine sitting in the back of the square, and compared the exhausts (Cos its 1.40am and if i go outside to actually look, the olds and my sister will crack the shits at the noise im likely to make....) and the one on the other motor is perfect! Until i get the custom one done anyway 😂

Wannavee ·

Yep,that was me again on Marion rd 'sarvo Doc

Doctor ·

Wannavee wrote:Yep,that was me again on Marion rd 'sarvo Doc
Yep yep, i recognised you! If i had thought about it i woulda given it a big rev for ya... its currently got no exhaust!

Doctor ·

So yesterday i decided to swap the exhaust over for the one on my spare motor as it sits closer into the car, and doesnt drop as far....

So it started like this...

With both exhausts off ready to go back on

Those with a keen eye will notice something i didnt when i took them off... Different Flanges...

So, No Exhaust... On a side note... it sounds like a bloody Harley, but louder like this..

So a trip down to my exhaust guys (driving very gingerly i might add, except for one nice rev to scare some kids at a bus stop... i couldnt help myself 😂 ) I ended up with this...

Guys were nice enough to paint it black for me too which i was stoked with... really tidies up the rear end...

Theres a bunch more things to do to get it ready for Volksfest in late November... Some of those things wont be unveiled until the show itself... others will surface before hand hopefully 😀

I have also settled on some plates for it, ill hit the folks up for them for my birthday... see how i go!

Wannavee ·

You didnt need to rev it,i heard it 4 km's away! 😂
Really does look good mate

Doctor ·

Wannavee wrote:You didnt need to rev it,i heard it 4 km's away! 😂

😂 Thanks mate...

Doctor ·

The result of todays session, it involved, Fire, Swearing, Rattle Guns, Bricks, Swearing, Angle grinders, swearing, and more swearing... But the results speak for themselves!

Ignor the image quality, im camera less at the moment, and owning DSLR's and good lenses means i really couldnt give two shits what the camera on my phone is like....

Scarab ·

Hey Doc, that is rockin!! Love the new stance......and I can't wait to see this weapon up close at Volksfest....LOVE IT!! 👍👍

Scarab ·

Sorry, forgot to ask....do you remember how many inner/outers it took to get it sitting like that....my Notch could benefit from your knowledge 😂

izac ·

looks sweet doc! how did you go with the lowering? and fire.... what happened there??😂 😏

Wannavee ·

Doc,thats awsome mate! Congrats.
Now let me borrow it for Volksfest 😀

Doctor ·

Cheers guys, im stoked with it!

Scarab, front is 3 splines, rear is, we guess 3 splines, we just put the spring plates horizontal and bolted it all back up 😀

Izac, the fire came from a seized bolt in the drivers side spring plate, we had to get the grinder out to get it out, and because my dub leaks some oil, we had a sheet down to stop it getting all over my mates driveway, and well, sparks and cloth dont mix! Overall, we found the rear a bit easier than the front, and if we hadnt been screwing around looking for tools, it would have taken probably 3 hours less than it did!

Lee, thanks bud, and not a chance of getting it off me for Volksfest! Are entry forms and costing out yet? (Might throw Matt the keys for a drive of a real cool Dub though 😂)

Its still a work in progress though, few things here and there left to finish it off. I managed to lose a hubcap on the expressway on my way to work after lowering it, shit happens, ill source another set... theres plans in store!

Doctor ·

A comparison shot of what the dub turned into Saturday...

matt ·

i got that hub cap and put it in your pile of parts, i will swap you the parts for the car!!!! lol😂
matt

Scarab ·

hey Doc, the comparison shots are GREAT! that really looks tough at that height. Does it scrape? 😁

Doctor ·

Scarab wrote:hey Doc, the comparison shots are GREAT! that really looks tough at that height. Does it scrape? 😁
Thanks mate, I parked it there at work yesterday and remembered i took a shot of it in the same spot 7 days earlier, so it was perfect! The thing scrapes on stuff i didnt know cars could scrape on! Im very lucky i changed the exhausts over, cos if i hadnt, it would have been without one pretty quickly! I absolutely love it! There were guys taking photos of it at work yesterday, and im always getting questions about it 😀
matt wrote:i got that hub cap and put it in your pile of parts, i will swap you the parts for the car!!!! lol😂
matt
Your a legend mate! And no chance, this ones not going anywhere! I had a guy come through work asking if it was for sale last weekend...

Heres where it sits at home...

Im going to make up some new door trims for it tomorrow, i currently have the passenger door with a bubblewrap door trim ( a bit of a joke with a mate ) and the drivers with nothing cos the window fell out of the winding mechanism, sadly, when both got removed, they got damaged, so replacements are coming!

Folks and sisters are going to get me custom plates for it, should order them today/tomorrow i hope 😀

Doctor ·

Its almost finished....

matt ·

nice!!!!!

Random shot from the Lamborghini Shoot Friday night

Scarab ·

Lamborghini shoot eh? Was that a promo for a new model or something for Solitaire?

Just interested as I used to be involved in the high end vehicle industry, only with the opposition.....Ferrari.

The square is looking seriously hot mate!

Doctor ·

Nah, was a mates weekend toy being craned into the Hotel Ballroom, so i took the opportunity to fire off a bunch of shots of it going in and the ordeal that we went through getting it in there, and then getting it out again sunday morning.

Cheers mate, absolutely loving it at the moment, gotta source a new fuel pump, and fix a throttle linkage thats coming off, and i think rear brake shoes are rubbing, once that stuffs sorted im sure more stuff will surface!

Scarab ·

oh, ok cool.....was that at the Hilton? I have witnessed Ferraris and Maseratis being craned up there in the past.....but never a Lambo 😂

Owning an older car, there always seems to be something to do....stick with it mate, you are doing a good job!

Doctor ·

Yeah the Hitlon, the other hotels have better setups that dont require closing roads! Was an experience, given the low ground clearance of the Lambo, made worse by the fact its a track car, it wasnt easy!

I love owning older cars, new stuff is boring!

Scarab ·

totally agree with you mate, at least you wont see another car like yours on every second corner like you would in a modern car!!

Wannavee ·

Hey Doc
Thats just awsome bud.
As I'm dubless at the mo(farken taxman asshole) I wont be driving to Volksfest.Bummer
Check the clubs website for entry info.
Look forward to saying gday

Doctor ·

So ive been eyeing off the location for a while, with the intention of shooting my car, and a few others down there, having to work last night, which is unusual for me, i took the camera gear and decided to fire off some shots after work.

Here are my favourites from the night...

I found two big things when doing this, i really like taking shots of the rear end of my car, and its awesome to have music when shooting... So from now on, I need to take more front end shots, and im always going to have iPod dock, and my phone or something for music...
Wannavee wrote:Hey Doc

Cheers mate, really lovin this car more and more each time i drive it.

Sucks that your Dubless, i dont think i could be dubless now! Surely you can scrounge a ride to Volksfest with someone, if my mate cant come, your welcome to ride shotgun with me 🙂

As for entry info, i had a look on the site, and couldnt find jack, might have to send them an email or something.

There is a white Type 3 square i see around my area occasionally, and ive run into him in the past at various places, but havnt been able to corner him and have a good chat (im one of those wierdoes that can talk about veedubs and cameras for hours....) I'd really like to get the two of them together and shoot the pair of them! I have also tee'd up a photoshoot with my cars great great great great great great great (etc...) grandson, an R36 Passat Wagon, looking forward to shooting two of VeeDubs finest at once....

izac ·

looks sweet man! i always rend to take more pics of the rear too!

that first pick looks like its sitting on the exhaust! 👍

Wannavee ·

Theres a white square near me at Edwardstown.Got whitewalls n venetians.Have seen it around but never chatted with him.
Try GHR motors on Daws road, ive seen it in there a few times.Dunno if thats a good thing or not!

Thanx for the shotgun offer but ill need to drag the missus along so we'll only be there for 2 or 3 hours I'd say.

Doctor ·

Nothing exciting, but i did get a snap, only on my phone, but a snap, of the Dub and its partner in crime to be, my 1964 Crown Deluxe...

At the moment, its just for where the dub cant go (which is a lot of places, ask my mates parents, they were less than impressed about the big gouge out of the road when i arrived and left sunday!), but it was an absolute steal, and i couldnt turn it down, 70,000 original Miles, One owner, how could i say no!

Scarab ·

nice score on the crown mate....whats the plan?.....slammed like the square and flat black??.....could be a killer car!

Doctor ·

Nah, one black car is enough, i now remember why I vowed never to buy a dark car again, its Filthy!

Slammed, maybe, but not anytime soon, i need to get it out of storage at work first! It got delivered to me and hasn't gone anywhere since haha Will get the Aircon looked at, (its got factory aircon, its so pimp!!!) and go from there though, might just split costs with my mate, and keep it as the "Fly under the radar car"

ryana89 ·

Doc, your squareback looks awesome, and that bonnet just!!!...... makes it even better than perfect👍 You may not agree, but i think it would make a pretty awesome hurse😵‍💫

electricmonk ·

If your still without one I should have a hub cap somewhere around here. As for other parts, hit me up I may have something spare. That's one nice looking car. I am jealous that I did not end up getting it, but it would never have looked as good as it is now and would have been impractical for me. One very very nice ride mate

Doctor ·

ryana89 wrote:Doc, your squareback looks awesome, and that bonnet just!!!...... makes it even better than perfect👍 You may not agree, but i think it would make a pretty awesome hurse😵‍💫
haha cheers mate, your not the first person to call it a Hearse, my mates missus calls it one all the time, she hates the thing, good thing im not attached to her, cos she'd be out the door!

Thanks to Matt, I just picked up a spare set of rims and another hubcap, that should get me by for now, but will keep it in mind if i ever need anything, im pretty good for parts at the moment. Pics when it cools down a bit...

A lot of people seem to be envious that i picked it up, as for not looking as good now, who knows mate, you may have done a better job than me! Thanks mate

The car started to run like shit on the drive to pick up the rims, so once its all cooled down i will have a look and see if i can spot whats wrong, hopefully its nothing serious and it will be back to its former self soon!

Doctor ·

No pics, was too damn hot, maybe tomorrow, but when i was putting the rims into the car i noticed one of them had a 185 wide tyre on it, got me thinking... i wonder if i can get some 205's under the arse of the dub...

Anyone know? Will give it a wicked stance with some wide rubber under it....

Doctor ·

Met up with a mate tonight for a few shots with his car. Its basically the Son/grandson, well, a descendant of mine...

It got too hot, and we kept getting interrupted so we went to the pub, but i have heaps of ideas for a shoot with these cars, so stay tuned!

Basically from tonight ive learnt this, my cars not low enough, its blowing smoke, and people are stupid....

Got started on my door trims today, they should be done tomorrow/early next week, and the dash will be done ASAP too... Volksfest is coming, and its got my motivation levels very high for bloody hot weather!

boristherat ·

The more I look at your square, the better it gets!!
Don't wanna swap the crown for a Beetle?😏
Looks mad mate.....we'll have to catch up and compare notes on photography too as I'm a bit of a shooter myself.

The Crown for the beetle, thats a no Brainer mate! If your thinking about it drop us a line, Id love to see the Beetle in my Driveway!

Id be happy to catch up with you and talk Dubs and Cameras mate, i can go for hours!

Scarab ·

you have taken some real nice shots of the old/new squares....love em 👍

Turbo54 ·

Your sick Darren!
T54

Scarab ·

Hey Doc,

Was nice to meet you on Sunday mate.

I took a couple of shots of your Square....I'm not a photographer though, so they aren't flash...just thought you might like to see em.....

Dont forget to let me know if you do get that Notch the guy offered you....especially if you are gonna part it out....or if you wanna make a quick couple hundred on the deal.....😂

PS: LOVE THOSE PLATES!!!!!

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Doctor ·

Was a pleasure meeting you Paul, always good to put faces to names.

Cheers for the photos, i wont say no to any, always good to see what other people take of the car 🙂 And the plates, im sure there were a few comments thrown around about them! Thanks again

Heres a few of the shots ive done so far

Was an awesome day out, was holding off on updates in this thread (and on other forums) to surprise some people with what had been done to the car since the last update.

The changes are...

Roof Racks (Complete with Beer Keg and Timber Deck Malibu Surfboard

Heiniken Beer Tap Gear Shift (the thing lights up when you change gears, its like driving around with a friggen torch on in the car!)

Street Sign Door Trim

Empi Stinger Exhaust

Spotlight on front bar

New Plates

A few random Stickers

and i think thats it...

Im now left with the task of reinventing it for the next show, ive stolen a few ideas from other cars down there, and have a few ideas of my own 😀

Scarab ·

oh man....I TOTALLY missed the street sign door trims!!! looks good 😂

as for the few ideas you've stolen...let me guess, fake turf for carpet?? 😂

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Doctor ·

How did you miss it!?

Carpet, Bah, Carpets for suckers....

electricmonk ·

Man am I bummed that I missed the show. I would have loved to have seen your car in person. If thats a green square behind you I think I may have actually seen it about a year ago sporting P plates. Oh and WTF is up with that bus ahead of you and in the other lane?

Doctor ·

Shoulda come down man, the beers were flowing, and there were cool dubs everywhere!

The green square, thats Browny's, hopfully having a few beers with him tonight

Still sporting P plates, his also makes mine look 4wd spec... i think im going lower now...

As for the bus, i take it your talking about the one with fake grass all over it? I think its a promo vehicle for a grass company or something, i completely forgot to get a photo of it, and have a closer look!

koolkarmakombi ·

looks good except for the watermarks on the pics 🤪

Mike ·

Sweet sqaure mate is it a factory panel van?

Doctor ·

Nah, not a factory panel, although I doubt it being factory would stop me modifying it!

Now... Let me tell y'all a story!

Saturday started magnificently, with a sleep in, i headed for what i was was hoping was going to be a tidy, complete, and solidly engined 1979 Type 3 Notch...

I was in luck, a quick look, fired it up quickly, and a short negotiation i was the new owner of a White Notch... I had plans in my head as to what i wanted from it...

It's perfect for what i wanted 😀

With a quick stop past a mates performace workshop, for a chat, a beer, and a laugh, i headed for work...

But there was a problem... The dub wasnt running right, coughing, spluttering, flat spots in the acceleration, backfiring...

I put my plans for junkfood lunch on hold and made it to work... Just....

I figured, ill deal with it after work, how bad can it be, its an aircooled veedub, these things survive everything...

Ill let the pictures tell a bit now...

🙁

No H2O was getting a tow truck ride...

On a side note... the tow truck had a tray designed for lowered cars (So the truck driver told me)

So while he hooked on, I inspected the tray, the angle, the ride height of mine... and came to the conclusion that... it wasnt going to work without utilizing this feature...

While i was doing this, the driver jumped in to check that the car was in nuetral, and the handbrake was off... before i made it round the car to inform him that it was in nuetral, and he just needed to lower the handbrake, he emerged asking WTF! with my prized Heiniken Gearshift in Hand....

Not Impressed... But by now it was 3am and I was just over it...

A (very poor) shot of the tray with its two piece design for lowered cars... it failed... the gouge marks on the ground are almost 1m long...

The problem after all this... A rooted condenser... and leaking, ok, hemorrhaging, oil cooler... and rooted plugs it seems...

I was planning on dropping the engine and box from mine, and putting the ones from this notch in... but not for a few weeks yet! Guess its being done a bit sooner rather than later... Will get the lads i know that are more mechanically minded than me to check it all over before it goes in, and give me a hand to do it... Might go lower while ive got the car on stands too...

Any tips on the engine change? Easiest with box in place? Or... any ideas on what i should be reading up on for it?

electricmonk ·

That white Notch.....look out for the big arsed spider under the dash. Damm thing nearly tore my arm off. LOL that's two cars I was interested in that you have now. Am I going to have to start watching over my shoulder now am I 😂 Oh and I notice the Hotel Sign in the background....and your a photographer........what WERE you taking photos of so late at night??? We will have to catch up some time to compare cars

haha i saw the spiderweb and instantly decided i wasnt sticking my hand anywhere i couldnt see... Ill be filling the car with at least a couple of cans of bug killer and closing it before getting in there at all i think! I hate fuggin spiders!

As for scoring two cars your interested in... You need to be quicker my man! 😂

As for the hotel sign in the background and photo's, i was waiting for the RAA, and consequently, the tow truck, and given i had my camera, i was experimenting a bit and wasting time till they arrived!

Be great to catch up and compare cars over a few brews mate, early in the new year it will have to be arranged! An SA get together of sorts i think...

electricmonk ·

It's all good. I don't have the time, money or place to do the cars as much justice as you have. Early in the new year sounds good, as long as I am not working.
When you looked at the notch did you see what the guy was working on in the garage?

Doctor ·

I dont have a great deal of time, never have any money, and the olds are getting shitty with the car collection! But its not going to stop me haha

As for what he was working on, was that the hot rod beetle? If so, he sold it!

electricmonk ·

Man that volks rod was sweet.
Heh, my wife is the one who hates my "collection" ONE car is all I should have. Will have to get stuck into the garden shed soon to store the parts from the 72, so I can get rid of it's shell and subframe and then fix the Verada so I can sell it, then things will be good.
The more I look the more I like your square. Just not practical for a family *sigh* I may try to make my own roof rack next year, and possibly get a front visor.

greasykitchen ·

Love your car! Those door cards are pretty cool. Would have been good to see it at volksfest. but I couldn't make it. I remember seeing it for sale and thinking it might be a cheap, cool car, but you've done so much more with it than I ever could.

It's heartening to see you get into it with so much enthusiasm too. Wish I had the time and space to collect a few cool rides. 👍

Scarab ·

hey mate, nice score on the Notch!!

Whats the plan...keeping or parting out....

if you are parting out, can I have first dibs on your engine/rear boot lid....I think that a late one will still fit my early by the looks of it (mine is pretty ratty 😢 )

Its good that you've seen the light and bought a Notch though mate!!😂

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Scarab ·

Sorry bro.....just realised I sound like a Type 3 vulture!! 😂

How soon do you need a rear hatch Scarab? (Scratch That)
Doh brain just engaged, been at a kindy break up for the last few hours. Lots and lots of screaming children.

Thanks mate, its not perfect for everyone, but god i love it!

Ive been looking at making my own rack, might make a full length one, ive also been trying to find someone to make a full length ragtop for it too... but thats difficult it seems, no one will even reply to emails regarding it!

Thanks mate, Everyone seems to think ive done better than they could have with it, im not so sure, i had an image in mind for the car, put together from hours upon hours on the internet looking at photo's, seeing what other people are doing with them, seeing whats possible, and combining them all together for my own twist of cool! Its great to hear people love it as much as i do, I always looked at peoples cars and aspired to one day own something everyone thought was cool... i dunno if im there yet, but ill get there one day!

Thanks mate, the plan... well... Seats into the square, or at least one of them... Front guards, will be stolen for the square, i have some plans for them, bonnet, no idea as yet, has a rust hole, but I have an idea... Gauges, it seems that the only type 3's to get the stickers for km/h over them are the notches! Might steal that for mine just to make sure im doing the right speed, at the moment im guessing!

As for the rest of it, iv'e no idea at the moment, it was bought as a parts car, much to some peoples disgust, but rest assured everyone.... Its going to make my square so much cooler!

You can have dibs on the boot mate, no problem, we'll sort something out for it im sure, drop me a line when you need it!

haha its all good, ive done the same thing to people, so dont stress!

And now for something completely different....

Being the person i am, who is that, well, it depends on who you ask, but anyway, i have friends in a variety of different fields, one of which is a Videographer, or whatever you want to call it! Every so often, we borrow gear from each other, so i figured I might as well call in a favour and do something Ive been hoping to do for a while...

So here it is... (Be fucked if i can get it to embed!)

colonel mustard ·

Never seen a YouTube video embedded here.

Don't part out a full car man, it's a waste... 🙁

Doctor ·

Its only a waste if all the parts dont get used.. Parts of it will be used to fix rust in mine, other parts will be used to enhance mine, Scarab wants some parts from it etc...

I have something in mind for the notch... it wont be to everyone's satisfaction, but that's life! (Dont bother asking, no one else knows about it, and no one will for a long time yet!)

Scarab ·

Nice work on the vid mate!! 👍 👍

Appreciate you giving me dibs on the engine lid....just need to make sure its the same as the early one, cheers!!

Scarab (aka: Paul)

electricmonk ·

Sweet video, everytime I go under Anzac highway I gun mine as well. I am glad your using the notch as a parts car. I didn't want to say anything but is is rusted to buggery in quite a few locations. When I looked at it I knew that it would take a heap of time money and talent to get it back to it's former glory

Doctor ·

No prob paul.

I was going to avoid south road when we filmed that, but the underpass was too tempting, its so well lit as well it makes for great video! As for the notch, rust, im used to it! Its all going toward fixing the much cooler square... Im thinking i might go lower on the square while im underneath it pulling shit apart too...

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Im steeling your door trim idea, that is the coolest thing ive seen in a while, and i do have a mirror.

bad luck bout the wagon, good looking notch but and im with you on the spider front. I ve got a huntsman somehwere in my car.

Damnit... I had a reply posted to this and it got lost in retarded computer land somewhere...

Anyway, i think a few people will be stealing that idea, but ive got a few aces up my sleeve to keep me ahead of the sheep 😀

I was hoping to patch the square up and putt it around until after new years, but after changing the condenser today, and having it run amazingly better instantly, the oil leak became my next concern, the bolts nearby that i thought would help stem the flow, didnt, and it is indeed a flow... So ive decided ill have to bring the engine change forward to ASAP so i have transport again!

Im still considering changing the gearbox over at the same time, i still need to have a good feel of the box in the notch and work out if its better than mine, i suspect it is...

The GTi swift that was written off and left in the driveway due to dealing with insurance companies is finally gone, so i can now have the notch and the square back to back for the changeover. Hopefully that makes it a bit easier....

Im chasing a type 3 workshop manual if anyone has one i can borrow for the engine/box change, or one they wouldnt mind selling me...

Anyone want to help with (or just do..) the engine change! 🥷 haha

Im working on a few things to debut at the next shot the square attends... or the next photoshoot i do with it haha whatever occurs first!

electricmonk ·

I have the late brown cover manual if you want to borrow it. I will probably be unable to help but if I can I will

So good luck on the engine swap, and hope it happens fast.

Might have to take you up on that offer when the time comes for the engine change, yet to hear from the other member as to the whereabouts of his workshop manual that he had, but thats cool, all in good time!

Due to work, nothing has happened on the car front at my place for a few weeks, and it will probably remain that way until work dies in the arse after new years...

But i did move the cars today... here is how they sit now...

As you can see... the schwarz one is leaking oil in such an oh so lovely way.... yes thats an oil trail... yes there are core flute wild turkey can cutouts as drip trays, thats because i cant get anything under the car unless i drive it onto something!

I snapped a new Avatar for myself while i was out there playing with the fisheye too

Here is a comparison shot of the two interiors as well... Other than the seats and gauges, i dont plan on using any of this, so if anyone needs something... let me know...

Scarab ·

the crashpad any good mate? Are you gonna use it?

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Doctor ·

Crashpad Gone mate, door trims gone, headlight switch gone, sun visors gone, had a visitor today!

But dont worry, the bootlid is still yours!

Was pretty devo today actually, had 3 of the states Coolest Type 3's at my place, and i couldnt move mine to take some photos! Next time..

I did take some shots of my car though...

A comparison shot.... (Spot the Difference!)

Its only a little darker....

Tomorrow is D day basically..... Ive decided im sick of not having a veedub to drive, even though i own two... So im planning on an early one to get the engine out and start the change!

Wannavee ·

Ya didnt take pics of the other 2 cars though did ya dopey? :-)
Thanx for the pic you sent me though, really made my day......NOT!

Im pretty sure something else made your day! And im pretty sure you made some poor bastards day who managed to catch ya on the balcony too!

As for photos of the other two... I thought about it... but the road was hot, and i didnt have my aussie workboots on... so didnt bother to grab the camera... They'll all be together again soon... Then the camera will come out...

Wannavee ·

And I'll bring the beers! :-)
And yeah,i was 'preoccupied'

Doctor ·

Ill Make sure the guys know, theres no need to BYO, Lee is providing!

Now on ya bike and find a razor!

Wannavee ·

SSSSSSH!
Ill bring a carton, then ya on ya own big mouth!

Hang on,who works in a drive through ay? Maybe THEY should supply the beers

Doctor ·

Who said anything about working? I rock up, walk around, look busy, talk to all the hot chicks.... and that's about it! And the best bit... God im good at it!

Wannavee ·

And I'm in womens bedrooms every single day 🙂

Doctor ·

New stickers arrived today

Just waiting for a mate to get home tonight so i can go steal some tools to hopefully get it all finished in the next day or two. I miss driving the damn thing!

Doctor ·

So... Ive run into a few problems... Whoever worked on my white notch last managed to round off three of my driveshaft bolts on the passenger side... and im not sure if they have done the same on the drivers side... So im working on a way to get them out at the moment.

Next on the list of hurdles... the bolts on the driveshafts of the square are the star style... not the typical hex head allen key style... So i need to source some star style bits to get them undone... This is turning out to be a lot more trouble than anticipated... I expected a few hurdles... but not multiple allready screwed bolts and shit.... So the goal of today has changed... i want the engine out of the notch.... Time for some lunch (I slept in again....) some FUIC and then back to it!

matt ·

y cant you take the gbox out with the drive shaft attached??? cant you just undo the shafts from the spring plates and drop the whole back end???

matt

Doctor ·

Thats what i was doing... but the heads have been rounded and i cant get them undone..... I don't care if they come out drive shafts attached... ill pick the best pair and put them in the square... but i need to get them undone to get the box out, and thats the hard part at the moment!

matt ·

can you get a grinder in there?

Doctor ·

If i have to... but thats an absolute last resort...

electricmonk ·

I can't exactly recall as it's been a while since I have been under mine (Redbacks have infested the area) But aren't the heads protruding? If so you could use a set of good quality locking pliers to at least get the bolt cracked.

Doctor ·

electricmonk wrote:I can't exactly recall as it's been a while since I have been under mine (Redbacks have infested the area) But aren't the heads protruding? If so you could use a set of good quality locking pliers to at least get the bolt cracked.
Thats going to be the plan, need to find myself some GOOD vicegrips, and give that a go, if that fails, ill drop into a mates workshop, he mentioned he might have some nifty tool for just this occasion... Hopefully it doesnt come to that... cos that means i need to take Wild Turkey up there... and then i have to drink some... and then i need someone to come pick me up... and then i wont get anything done!

Doctor ·

So... the Vice Grips idea was a failure... They just slide around on the head of the bolt and dont crack it.... Anyone got any more ideas?

Doctor ·

Problem solved.... best $66 i ever spent! Pics and details when my hands arnt filthy....

Doctor ·

Ok.... This is the biggest problem ive got now...

Theres no heart in NO H2O!!!!

And the $66 mentioned prior to this post... These things... I strongly suggest everybody buy a set... Absolutley brilliant!

I always forget how small the car is as well... Until its parked next to something like this...

That was before it was lowered as well!

Doctor ·

On a side note... I think while the engine is out, i might throw a different exhaust on it... Anyone know where i can get some extractors for it in Adelaide at a reasonable price? Reasonably quickly too?

Doctor ·

Update time....

With an extra set of hands from a fellow VeeDub nut (Thanks Lee.... Borwny is just useless!) the engine is back in... A few minor things to do now to get it running... Connecting all the fuel lines, im also moving the fuel filter from the engine bay... Thinking ill put it down by the box or something, havnt decided yet....

Connect the throttle, the clutch, and make sure ive got it wired up properly, and i should be good to go! (I Hope...)

Tomorrow afternoon i should have some photos of it back on the road! God i cant wait to cruise it!

I have also ordered a bunch of new parts for it... cant wait for those now either!

Scarab ·

mmmm....new parts eh? sounds interesting! 😂

what suprises do you have in store now mate??

good work on the engine swap by the way, hope its cruising soon!

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Doctor ·

Wont be a surprise if I tell everyone!!

Engine should be running by the end of the week... just need to get it all wired up, check everything is done up and it should be good to go!

(You still want that boot lid thingy??)

Scarab ·

sure I do mate....did you bother checking you PM's?? 😂 I sent you one before my last post above.

Cheers,

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Doctor ·

Update time... SO its all back in, all firmly in place... all wired up... but its a no go... Im hoping its something ive fucked with the wiring... I did as best i could, even used a wiring diagram... any tips on what i may have done?

Scarab ·

Hey mate, you got PM 🙂

Paul

Doctor ·

So, thanks to a Fellow VeeDub Nutter, i scored something to make the square look Stoned.... I think it worked...

You may have noticed as well, that all my photos are gone... this is due to changing websites and hosting... Ill work on getting them back up, but cant guarantee anything...

Cool, might have to go hunt a copy down! (Im still stuck at home, and dont read magazines much...)

Wannavee ·

On the cover too!!

Doctor ·

Thats right bitches, its a Cover car 😂

Doctor ·

It Lives!!!

Finally its back on the road, drove it over the weekend, a few things to fix but its back!

Had to wait till it was cool enough, and my drill had enough balls to pull the tech screws out so I Could pull the door trim off and put the window back in its cradle thing so it could be put up and the car washed!

The afternoon, well, night, resulted in this....

Very Dirty... well... probably not... but as dirty as any of my cars will ever get! It took months of sitting in a carport on axle stands to get to this!

All lathered up and wet

Clean!

So i ducked around the corner, put it on the footpath, and took some shots!

Moved it off the road into a carpark thingy there, and when leaving left my mark 😉

Yes, im a Photo Whore... Yes... I like Posting them EVERYWHERE I can on the net... and yes... i love the sound of my car scraping!

I almost had a heart attack last night on the way home from work driving through some roadworks.... There was a manhole cover, that in the process of the road being redone had had the tarmac around it taken away, so it was raised above the level of the road, i had no where to go with a car next to me, and an island on the other side, I clenched, closed my eyes, and I waited for the horrendous sound of my sump or something being ripped off.... thank god it never happened! Might be time to go lower!

matt ·

nice 1 chris, looking good

matt

Scarab ·

Hey mate,

You've got mail....hopefully!! (my computer freaked when I tried to send it) Let me know if you don't have it.

Man that thing is tough as. I love it

Doctor ·

Caught up with a few boys last night so dragged the cars out for a few photos...

I learnt a bit from this, battling with looooooooooooong shadow's and slowly diminishing light, as well as getting my head around a new camera body, I have a few ideas for the next one...

I need to make this one a bit bigger!

Thats it for now... not entirely happy with the other stuff i got! The next time i do this, ill be better organised, have a better location, more controllable lighting and park the cars better!

Not bad for a slapped together and rushed thing, but its not bad....

waveman1500 ·

Doctor wrote:The next time i do this, ill be better organised, have a better location, more controllable lighting and park the cars better!
Well if you need a 5th Adelaide Type 3, then I could come along!

Would show off how low all of your cars are to have a stock-height one in the frame!

Doctor ·

The car has evolved a little bit for the Day of Show....

colonel mustard ·

road signs look great.

not sure about the shifter... might be a little long...

Doctor ·

Cheers, The shifter is fine as long as you dont use it by grabbing the top of it... The tow truck driver did that.... and Fucked it.... I needed to remove the ash tray to get first though.... ah well.... shit happens!

colonel mustard ·

ah, wouldnt you grush your hand by using the top...?

maybe think about getting a shorter shift rod, or change the angle, is it straight?

Doctor ·

Yeah, you would smack your hand on the dash if you use it on the top, i have been considering bending the shaft cos it is straight, i have a spare on here that ill look into doing something with. Ive also thought about putting a bus shifter on it so its even longer... decisions decisions....

A random shot from the other day

I was shooting Bike Dirt Jumps so the colour was off and the camera was setup for something completely different, but makes the car look low!

Doctor ·

Had some spare time today and made up a parcel shelf for under the dash, moreso so i have somewhere to put stuff when i have a passenger, although not often...

First, got the required stuff to make a shelf from...

Then, i made the required modifications to make it fit, and one helluva mess at home to go with it...

And finally, using one of the best inventions ever, fix it in place 🙂

vicelore ·

Love the interia man..

Cheers Vice

Wannavee ·

Hahahahaha,now THAT is dodgy Chris

Doctor ·

So, Saturday on the way to work the engine decided to leave its contents on the road... So i walked to work to deal with it afterwards. 45 minutes for RAA to turn up and tell me what i allready knew, that it needed to be towed home, then another 1.5 hours for the truck... we have our Suspicions of a Cracked Crank Shaft, possibly a cracked crank case, whatever it is, the motor is dead!

So the car is being pulled off the road to be rebuilt. The body is being split from the pan, any and all rust fixed, will get a new motor, new gearbox, re do the brakes, with a completely new look! Might put some carpet and stuff in it this time round, i have a concept of what i want the end product to be, now to make it happen...

Wannavee ·

CARPET?? WHAT?? ARE YOU SERIOUS?? 😂

Doctor ·

Wannavee wrote:CARPET?? WHAT?? ARE YOU SERIOUS?? 😂
Check ya emails clown!

I got a lot of ideas for the rebuild 😉

Wannavee ·

I'm sure you have!
Got some meself

Doctor ·

The idea's have been flowing that's for sure, i have a list of things as long as my arm for this rebuild!

Might need to sell the plates to fund it, or find some kind of sponsorship!

Wannavee ·

How much for the plates?

Doctor ·

Enough to rebuild the car the way i want it!

But seriously, the plates aren't going anywhere, they belong on a 1970 Square and will stay there!

Wannavee ·

Was worth a shot

Doctor ·

Might as well share my plans on this build.

(fingers crossed this works and isn't too big....)

I think im going down this route. No idea what wheels im going to put on it yet. If i need to run adapters or change the stud pattern on the car to get the wheels i want, i will

Body off the Chassis, Fix all the rust, make it mint, relocate the fuel filler, fill all trim holes. Nice White paint, i have an idea what White i want to use, just need to check costs and stuff. Will get a new heart, rebuilt box, some new interior goodies. The door trims will stay, ill just tidy them up a bit, make the handles fit and look proper. Will probably loose the sun visor on the front, and the rear venetian, and I have a few other idea's up my sleeve too!

Go ahead, Flame me, share your views, whatever you want... To be honest, I'm building this for me, not for anyone else...

ryana89 ·

Your individualism with your Squareback has always been, well inspirational!
It was and is going to be possibly the most unique car I've ever seen.

Bummer about the engine, was there any other reasons/factors affecting the crankcase splitting? Autopsy would be interesting😉
I personally like the new plans for it.

Thanks mate, good to hear are inspired by it! I find it odd logging into some forums and seeing people post my photos of my car in threads about cool VW's!

As for the engine, no idea, i haven't actually had any time to do anything with it since it got put in the carport. Ill take the battery out of it, might have a use for it, and it will be put aside until i have a spare day or so to start pulling things out of it.

I cant wait to start making some progress. I'd love to keep it as it is, but there are too many satin/matt black cars getting around these days, time to try something else.

Doctor ·

Ok, update time... No photos... Got some surprises up my sleeve, but ive been slugging away, still no idea what went wrong with the motor, havn't pulled it apart yet, in fact, i havn't dropped it out of the car yet... Should probably get around to that!

If all goes to plan, ill be back on the road within the month... The complete new engine is a little way off, but i know the approx pricing, and whats being done to get it back on the road. Might just strap another heart in, in the meantime and get myself rolling in the meantime!

Doctor ·

Ok, so some people will be aware whats happened at my place of late, others, probably not so aware. But there has been a MASSIVE change of plans...

I did have another wagon i was building to drive while the panel van was rebuilt, but i kept finding rust, the bottom of the drivers door was COMPLETELY gone! An absolute bargain came up as well, and I've bought a 59 beetle, so the panel is going back to Daily Driver duties, and this means what exactly, well, heres some pics!

The replacement heart goes in tomorrow, removed from the wagon to give the panel some new life, as for the beetle, y'all just gunna have to wait and see 😉

Pollywaffle ·

I'm not sure why I haven't seen or posted in this thread before. I absolutely love your car! Great work. It's really inspirational. Good luck with the bug! I genuinely cannot wait for updates.

Doctor ·

Cheers mate, its going a bit more Low Key at the moment, just needed to change it up a bit to keep myself sane...

So as it sits now...

Engine Change is complete, it just wont start, no idea why, got a mate coming around next Tuesday to suss it. I'd do it this week, but i have two Uni exams on Monday and im doing my best impersonation of someone studying...

A few more tweaks on the exterior and i'll leave it at that for a few months. The wheels need some paint, no idea what im going to do, I've had red, I've had Fluro Orange, tested metallic charcoal, and its just too dark, got a few idea's, will see what they come up like and decide then.

The Beetle... Well... Its still sitting there, nothing has changed at the moment, been trying to focus on getting the panel running again. Once that back to daily driver duties, the Beetle gets the attention, well, more attention anyway...

Barnabie ·

Hope the exams go well ... been there, done that, poor bugger - at least you've got something to break the monotony of study❗

Once you're clear of exams post some pics on the beetle .... the suspense is killin' me!

Best of luck

Kris. 😀
