um, the pedal goes to the really far down to the floor. Its been bled, but i cant get a solid solid pedal. it doesnt fade though. the front squeal, but still have about half thickness on the pads. the rears are alright, but at full adjustment. there are the same with the handbrake on, and off.

Iv managed to pick up some second hand drums for nothiing from pudgy, and Joel is bring me discs and calipers. I have a new set of front pads, and im getting rear shoes and wheel cylinders from STIDUB for $100.... i just need cash for seals/bearings, caliper rebuild kits, brake hoses and then machining.

my front end is in need of a bit of tlc soon too, supers are so clunky and noisy some times...

I'm selling the stuff cause i wont use it.

matberry 路

Dont sell the 36mm socket unless you got two, you'll need one for the rear brake repairs.

Sounds like the master cylinder could be the problem with the bad pedal

colonel mustard 路

I dont have a 3/4 drive in anything.... but you make a good point

I hope its not the master... thats not a cheap exercise.

555bug 路

you can rebuild it for < 50 it may need a hone though.

matberry 路

You said the rears were ok, put in a kit or a complete new master. Not that exxy, depends where you shop. 馃槀

colonel mustard 路

how much should a new master cost and where from... for a super. 馃檪

Anthiron 路

ok this is a long shot but i had an issue with bleeding my brakes. a piece of the rubber grommet that the brake fluid reservoir line enters via had broken off and was wedged in the inlet. so when you opened up the system the fluid couldnt be replenished fast enough and left a bad pedal.

if your pedals not getting worse under brakes then you obviously dont have a leak. sounds like the master cylinder is buggered. but then again thats what i thought my problem was too.

make sure you need to spend money before you do.

shame i sold my parts car super, i would have given you the master cylinder.

Well, I am open to donations 馃檪 thanks for the help guys 馃檪

grumble 路

You say you have bled the system, have you tried the pedal with the handbrake applied,if the pedal is good the air is in the rear,if not block all hoses with hose clamps and check, then remove one at a time, each one will let the pedal go down a little,if it goes down a lot that is your wheel. Or if the blanking doesn't make any difference fit a master cylinder.Micks Motors or Classic veedub are good suppliers at reasonable prices. Regarding the 36mm socket drive there is a 12''to3/4'' adaptor available,.Note when bleeding always shut the bleeder before letting the pedal up slowly.

So many people dont know how to bleed brakes properly

izac 路

if you let the pedal up to fast after closing the bleeder is it less effective?

well, my mate did them, and he's been a mechanic for 6 years. he did them the best the car would let him.....

matberry 路

If the pedal is returned quickly, some older masters will allow air past the cup seals instead of drawing fluid.

Colonel, tell us how good he is after he's been working on old vee dubs for over 30 years.

馃槀 agreed

i would take the advice man

colonel mustard 路

yeah, because VW's are the hardest car there is to work on. 馃お

I'm not paying you out Matt, but give the guy a chance.... they're just brakes..... every car has them (hopefully), I'm sure he can manage.

They have also been bled and serviced by Trevor Luckhurst, who has been working on old vw's for at least 30 years. (and thinks my calipers are wrecked - hence why im going for a full brake service.)

thanks for the input.... I will get a master as well.

Now lets get back on topic. someone buy my stuff!

colonel mustard 路

Bump on the parts.... 馃檪

colonel mustard 路

no one want this stuff??? I will bring it to warwick if you bring the cash...... 馃檪

If you haven't sold that 36mm x 3/4" drive socket, I'll make you a drive if it'll help you keep a toolbox together. Any VW owner should have one of these. All you eill need to find is a length of 3/4" (woops, 19mm to you youngsters!馃槀) bar to turn it.
