How is everyone going on their new car projects for nambucca?
I have almost finished, fired it up tonight, just have to mount the oil pressure, temp and tacho (If it turns up from the US in time) and a good clean up, and probably a few little bits and bobs I have forgotten to do!
It's been 4 months of fairly solid work, every night in the shed and most weekends, but great fun!!馃榾

My hopes of having the project finished for nambucca were dashed when I found too many holes to fix in time post blasting. Ah well, I'll still be there but not in a vw for the first time :cry

Well I pulled the V6 back out of the Baja last night, am going to replace the timing belt, the CV's, and the valve cover gaskets. Make front and rear bash plates, and generally tidy up the whole V6 install, make it look a little pretty, polish the valve covers etc....
Still have to remake my rear parcel shelf / sub box, make a cold air intake, finish (well start) tidying up under the bonnet.....
I wanted to put my new thing front end in, but don't think it will arrive from the states in time.
I also wanted to race at raliegh, but I would have to get some spare rims with street tyres, then borrow a trailer to take them to valla in, then wire up a trailer plug and finish the tow bar, also get my cams licence..... I am starting to think maybe the racing at Valla will have to wait until another time. I think time is too tight this time around....

Just have to put the bits back on the Speedster that I took off for the sprint (hood etc), replace the baffle that I spat out at Oran Park (much to the disgust of the Porsche crowd)........and hope for clear skys there and back.
I'll be trailering up the Spyder (just need to convince Justine to drive the Speedster all that way!).

By reading all your postings all seem very busy at work here getting ready.....
When I walk past & admire all your cars at Nambucca, I for one do realize how much work you all did to be there.
All your late nights, money, time & effort will be appreciated & noticed.
It does feel nice to know that you all are trying so hard to get things just right to be there.
So don't panic if you haven't finish everything the way you'd like, just realize everyone does appreciate all that you went to, to be with us there.

I wouldn't be suprised either. I couldn't take my Baja to the last Valla because a mate that said he'd take 2 weeks to paint my Baja ended up taking 16 weeks to not paint my Baja (after that I got the body back from him and took it elsewhere, nice friend hey!) 馃槧

Im getting my bug ready for MotorX this weekend at Homebush, polish, brush touch some stone chips etc, this needed to be done for Nambucca anyway.
For Nambucca, fitted the cruise control (liscence saver I hope) from my old Audi. Stopped the fumes coming into the engine bay (I dont have a big extractor fan like other bugs)
Did a few things that needed to be done for engineering, secured rear speaker shelf, covered pod air filter and just generally cleaning and checking things.
Im on 4 weeks leave, but we are in the middle of major home renos at the moment so Im dodging builders while trying to work on my car and keep one step ahead of preperations for the builders.

Hows me for stressed, I gotta wait for my tax return which means waiting for work to get their act together and get the group certificates handed out which means the start of july in order to pay the mechanic whos doing some major and minor jobs for me on it and then....I gotta get it roadworthy then registered..and if i get a weekend off work Ill take it on a trip to test it.(.god help me if something goes wrong...).I dont like my chances of getting personalized number plates in time...hopefully I get enough time to pack it properly........Once Im in nambucca, it will be total chill for me after a stressful few weeks.:o

I've uglified my kombi by putting a radiator on the front again. Whatdya know, the pinging has stopped now I have intercooling and even with woolies petrol!
today I replaced front brakes, a wheel bearing and a tie rod end.
I'm halfway through replacing brakes on my trailer. DAMN THE RAIN.
I've really annoyed 3 redback spiders by squashing them. First time trailer has moved since April 2002. Maybe now people will stop knocking on the door asking if the can buy it.
my task list:
kombi: wheel align front and rear. general oil change/tappets service. rego check.
trailer: change brakes, check lights, blue slip rego.
fastback: get and fit fuel pump, fit fuel regulator, steal back boost gauge from kombi. Buy 80 odd litres of optimax. I imagine it will be premium pricing at raleigh. get CAMS licence.

I'll be there. If my kombi blows up in the next 3 weeks I will take the mitsubishi. If that gets stolen I will hitch with the melbourne mob. If I upset them adequately I will take the train or fly. If I'm in hospital needing brain surgery, I'll tell the doc to "take it out and hurry up, I'm late for nambucca".
I'll be there! In one of the duplexes. Just look for the kombi that seems like it just drove out of Baghdad.

trailer brakes are being machined right now. fuel pump is mounted in the fasty. Ive cleaned up part of the garage, I can nearly get to the engine now. Found stuff I never knew I had too!

GRRR trailer brakes were supposed to have been machined but are not!
buuuuuuuuut did an oil change on hellfassstback (what were those crunchy bits in the bottom?) filled it with 20 litres of shells finest and it started... 2nd go. Disappointed it didnt start first go, but at least it DOES go.
Now I just need to perform at Valla. Cant sit back now and say what woulda coulda happened if only.

well I'm getting close to finishing polishing the V6 to make it look respectable.

I had to get deep heat massaged into my neck last night, as leaning forward polishing for hours really really hurts 馃檨
The main problem is everything is sand cast, so I had to spend hours grinding and sanding casting split lines and rough sand cast marks off before I could even think about polishing...

well i just had a major setback lastnite. was out picking up a friend from the cbd, didn't read the traffic ahead rite. The taxi's bumper is only slightly bent and i need a new bonnet, and the tweak in the left guard fixed馃檨馃檨馃檨馃檨馃檨馃檨馃檨馃檨
but the momo wheel, aerotech seat and lower front springs look cool.

Got all my jobs done on the Spyder in 10 minutes.
Did a compression check..........and now I don't have to worry. Looks like someone stole my compression!馃檨
Hmmmm me thinks it was my right foot!!!!!!
So I just have to pack the Speedster and I'm finished.:thumb

Got my pop out rear windows fitted yesterday, thanks Bug Boy. Sorted out the stereo, thanks again Bug Boy.
Now just need to
- grease and adjust the front end (king pins)
- top up the gear box oil
- strip off the whole exhaust system, degrease, paint and refit
- give the motor a oil change and tune up
- adjust the brakes
Phew! And we should be good to go.
Have I missed anything vital for a 2000k drive????

yee haa got the trailer brakes done. Dropped into a brakes specialist thinking I would need to have my old shoes rebonded. Told him they came off noahs boat trailer and everywhere I look they just shrug and say these dont exist. He looked at em, came back 20 seconds later and handed me the right ones. Just by looking at them!
Pulled all the adjustment mechanisms apart and neversiezed it all. Pulled the towball coupling apart and fitted greasenipples to it. cleaned and greased. Its all back together and ready to go.
Got myself a haircut.
All I need now is 2 coloured pieces of paper. A blue one for trailer and a pink one for kombi.
I've never been so well prepared for an event. I'm gonna be so bored. Might have to build up a 36hp engine for the BBQ. THAT would be cool.

Well I've had enough damn polishing to last me a while (I can't move my neck), the clear coat ran and dust stuck in it, but who cares, I've had enough 馃槈
Now to change the timing belt, clean the hydraulic lifters, make some intake gaskets, bend a new radiator pipe, put the engine and box back in, put the new CV's in, make a rear speaker shelf / sub box, clean up under the bonnet and carpet it, replace the front brake pads, make new skid plates, paint the engine cage bars, paint the exhaust...
I don't think I'm gunna be bored :o

This is usually my problem. I put things off, put them off some more, and have a mad rush to get somewhere. Either nationals, valla, or day of the volkswagen. And then if I do get there I have dramas because of the rush. Thankfully I have no such problems this time, and so long as the fastback performs and I beat Craig Torrens I will be happy.
I have been to valla 3 times in an 'other' car. While it certainly isnt the same thing cruising into nambucca in a ford at the back of an endless line of VW's, the rest of the time is spent walking, talking breathing VW's. You dont need to have a set of VW keys in your pocket.
Its well worth the effort to go.

the closer valla gets the further harder it seem to meet the deadline. As of today, suspeniosn ok(finally), 1000 for front panel damage, carbs need over haul, rocker geo reset, plus all the little things such as new running boards mirrors, etc that i wanted to be done have been put on the back burner 馃檨

After spending half the day yesterday trying to arkk Pash, finally with a bit of help from "start ya bastard" she fired up after being shed bound for the last few months. filled her up with fuel, gave the tyres some air and away we went for a smooth run into the vw mechanic for a few finishing mechanical touches, shell sit safe n sound there for awhile . It was so so good to be driving her again, ORGASMIC even. Ree馃榾

Slaved over the Oval all last weekend. Stripped, repaired and refitted the whole exhaust. ( the top flange bolts are real ba**turds) . Replaced a siezed wheel brake cylinder, adjusted king pins, adjusted brakes, topped up gear box oil, fixed wiring, replaced all fuel lines and properly mounted filter, changed engine oil and tuned motor. Phew I'm knackered. Had no idea there was so many little niggly things wrong with it.
If the bugger breaks down on the way up after all this, then I dont know what!!!!
One week to go.

Motor is all go, all I need to do now is change the rear wheel bearings, adjust the brakes, install three new power outlets, swap the rear bumper for a less-bent one, lube the sliding door, finish my overhead console, fit the air conditioner, make and instal a headliner and wash & polish the whole bus!
If I get the first three done, I'll be happy. 馃槈

What is a strut? My kombi has been on hold cos I spent a week in Qld and a week paving a BBQ area out back.
I'm seriously thinking about giving it a wash and polish and vaccuum. hmmm maybe.
got the new motor and gearbox in, but drive shaft on the gearbox seems to be very sloppy and loose and cant find any gears.
hav to drop it all out again and start again!!!

Did the manditory oil and filter change yesterday, shortened one of the s/s oil lines out of the pump that was touching the exhaust ( the inner hose had actually burnt thu so was very close to failing) and today I was going for a cruise and about 100mtrs from my place there was a strange squeeling noise and a trail of oil down the street! The gasket on the screw on remote filter had blown out. Now its winter I must remember to warm the oil before planting the boot.

My motor is running, and starting, but I still have a hesitation which seems to disappear as the motor warms up. It will get me there as-is, but I'm not really happy with it. I'm debating whether or not to pull the RH carby apart and put a kit through it. The LH one is as good as I'm going to get it, although it would be nice if I had compressed air available, as I'm not 100% sure I got it all cleaned out properly.
Failing that, I'll check the points again, and run a kit through my fuel pump, but I think the problem is in the carbies. 馃檨
I got the power outlets installed, wired up the LH speaker, finished off the wiring for the tacho, took the middle bench seat and seatbelts out, so I'm nearly ready to start packing, but I think I'll have to do the RH rear wheel bearings before I go anywhere. 馃檨

My fastback touched the floor today! Its been on stands since Easter last year. Didnt stay there for long though. Its now up on the trailer! I'd forgotten how heavy the clutch pedal is. Forgotten how much of a PITA a puck clutch is. Forgotten how hard it is to turn with race tyres and quick steer. All that plus I couldnt get the seat adjustment to lock in made for some very interesting bunny hopping when I turned it around in the street. Kids in the street liked it though. And they were amazed that a VW could do 10.5's (number still there from last years nationals) I didnt think to tell them that it was for the 1/8th not 1/4. 馃榾

All was going well, until I took it down to get a new set of tyres fitted. Well despite telling the tyre mob to set the guns at the lowest setting they still managed to strip out one of the rear wheel bolt holes.
F**k said I. Hopefully I can get it repaired tommorow as the early oval drums are getting as rare as the proverbial "Rocking Horse Shite" and you cant just buy em off the shelf.

well today at 11.27am i got my car to start for the first tiem with the new motor.
after some minor issues and adjustments got it all sorted and its running sweetly.
should be getting a tune up tomorrow and maybe replace clutch cable.
cant wait to fit my new fog light and tacho (thanks empi) for fridays cruise to valla.

Wanted to fit a step I got off a Kombi wreck but that's just not going to happen in time. Will spend the last few nights packing and giving the Kombi a good clean.
I did however manage to finish new curtains last night 馃檪 I had plenty of offers from relatives and friends to do them but decided since I'd done alot of work myself on the Kombi I'd continue to do so. Got (please don't laugh) sewing lessons from Mum on the Husqvana (can't spell it) and it's taken me about a week to get them all finished including tie backs.
As for the colour, well let's just say they are very bright and my four year old daughter is over the moon about them as she likes to think of the Kombi as her cubby house!!
Please feel free to take a look and bag me out accordingly at Valla, I'm sure my wife won't back me up hahaha.

Your curtains sound intresting, When i was searching for fabric for mine a few years back I found this purple fabric with black bats and glitter all over it , real cheap and it matched kombi well, my kids thought them great and desided to call it bat mans van, The kids are now teens and the curtains have faded but they are still are in use.

Well times running out and I didn't get everything done that I wanted to. Was hoping to get the rear bumper on but the damm brackets don't match the holes in the bumper bar and require modifications (I thought 68 to 72 were the same). This job will now have to wait until after Valla. Also wanted to get the tray sprayed but ran out of time.
However all is not lost. I did manage to get a service done and am having the mags resprayed and having the car cut and buffed today. Should look sweeeet馃榾
Garage is stacked with all camping gear and ready to be packed when I get the Kombi back this afternoon.
