Found another one in my brothers back yard, we are going to go halves in the rat project.
His body, 56 standard in unrestored condition. It has had a few bumps and scrapes but is in quite good condition all we did was give it a good clean and a clear coat. The pan came from my 63 with a narrowed disc brake front end, 1300 std gear box with solid mounts. The engine will come out of my 64 (ran at warwick 10.21) this will be the thrash at the track car as I don’t want to gut my beetle every time. We are going to have a run sometime before Christmas so if anyone is heading out to willobank please post a note on the site. I will throw up a couple of pics when it finished.
FROSTY ·
and a couple more pics
Nickster ·
nice rat, plenty of character. Look forward to seeing it finished.
colonel mustard ·
What pan are you then going to put in your 63???
What is the engine setup going to be??? Iv not seen it ...
KDF-WAGEN ·
Didn't take long for you to come and grab the oval, shouldn't have left the gate open!
FROSTY ·
The 63 is going to be sitting on a rack for a while. It was painted Black a couple of years ago and it had some issues with moisture.... ( so it will wait for a repaint). My brother will evenually restore the car but with twns on the way it will be some time away. If we have it together for a couple of years and get sme trips down the track it will be fun.
The engine I ran at warwick, its 1776 std heads with 1:1.25, engle 110 cam, counter weighted crank, lightened flywheel, twin 40 dellorto's, Mallory dist and coil with 1 5/8 merged header.
FROSTY ·
I would have sqeezed it through half open.....
KDF-WAGEN ·
Suppose, it will be the same old story, if it's been at your place longer than a day, it's yours, right! Remember, there's a new 36 horse at M&D's we could drop in it.
oldskl60 ·
Love it Jason!!
You just can't go wrong with that wheel and stance combo on an early bug
VWCOOL ·
Noice!

Wicked!
Goitsy ·
That looks nuts👍
telf ·
That looks real nice. Some sweet Pat and Tina on it!
So will we be seeing it driving around the GC or will it be trailers only.
FROSTY ·
Trailer only..... it has a some rust that wouldn't pass roadworthy, but it is safe to use. What's the Pat and Tina? ( never heard of it)
telf ·
Thats a same its only gona be trailered.
I was just being a smart ass i ment patina.
How did you go at warrwick. Saw your pick in vwma!
(By they its Richard from the Printers wasn't sure if you new)
FROSTY ·
I know who it is... I though it was you anyway, did you get the frame head for you front end conversion? ( my brother told me what patina is.. never heard of it.. duh)
FROSTY ·
Hey Telf, throw up some pic's of your car, It looks unreal low with thoes wheels!!!!!
matberry ·
Cool Frosty. Bout time you guy's got serious.....Looking good.
telf ·
I thought you might have know who it was!!
Still got to organise the frame head but it will happen at some point, I have the beam so im half way there!!
Ill try and get a couple of picks up, really need to take some new 1ns!
telf ·
Found some!!
Will look nice with a narrower and slightly lower front end!!!
FROSTY ·
yeh, perfect. Narrowed or not it looks great.
VWFREAK ·
Nice find, gotta love an oval 🙂
FROSTY ·

matberry ·

cam070 ·
You could have done a lot worse. Looks in surprisingly good condition. Best of luck with it.
telf ·
is it going yet?
Give us a shout when it is. It would be good t check it out!
Stanley ·
yeh Frosty....what's happening......❓
FROSTY ·
OK, I cant fit the merged exhaust.... and i don't want to cut the rear valance. ( remember the body isn't mine) Fuel pump, ignition switch, door windows and catches and it's ready to go. I want to got TNT 2nd week in December. I think that it should be done this weekend ( The inlaws are coming to stay and its time to hide in the shed)
geevyaratip ·
Hey Frosty, I reckon you're full of it. Maybe you should spend less time out in the shed and more time with your lovely wife and children.
FROSTY ·
Oh shit the misses has infiltrated the site, go away and do some cleaning.
Moderator please disable the geevyaratip its my wife giving me shit........
FROSTY ·
all done and out to the TNT wednesday (16th) night next week . Hope there is another Beetle there....!!

Stanley ·
so Frosty....did you get to the TnT
If you did spill ya guts
FROSTY ·
Hey Stanley, we got out to the tnt, it was unreal cause there was hardly anyone there. My brother came with me and Col turned up too. I had five runs and got quicker with each run, also smashed my warwick time (with the same engine)
1. 1/4 16.90 Ford Escort V8 smoked me
2. 60' 2.18 , 1/8 10.36, 1/4 15.98, 80.95mph Dunnydoor V6 beaten
3. 60' 2.11 , 1/8 9.899, 1/4 15.74, 83.27mphDunnydoor V6 beaten
4. 60' 2.11 , 1/8 9.885, 1/4 15.73, 84.02mph Dunnydoor Ute V8 took me a 3/4 track
5. 60' 2.10 , 1/8 9.766, 1/4 15.45, 84.72mph. Jap Turbo took me at 3/4 track.
still think that it has a some more in it. Time to sort out the carbs (28 vents are a little to small).
If anyone is going out to have a run at a tnt let me know.
wilderness ·
love the rat!! tough as ten tough things!!! haha
dangerous ·
Awesome results Jason,
and super consistent60 foot times too.
Hows that last MPH!
FROSTY ·
Thanks Dave,
My reactions are getting better too. ( 0.127, 0.029, 0.070, 0.11 ) I really think that I can get it down .5 over the 1/4, 14's is the next goal. I will get into it over the xmas break and hit it again at the end of Jan ( after the New Year Series). I'M HOOKED WELL AND GOOD NOW!!!
matberry ·
Very cool Frosty.

Can you refresh our memory as to the specs of the engine and trans Jason?
Stanley ·
Good stuff Frosty.....👍
Every run saw improvement in ET, 60' and MPH. Gotta be happy with that
FROSTY ·
Hey Dave,
1776cc AS41 Case, Counter Weighted std Crank, Std Rods Balanced, Engle 100 Cam with 1:1.25 rockers.Straight cut cam gear. Heads are also Std with only a very mild clean. Twin 40mm Dellortos 28mm Vents. Mallory 2 point dist and merged 1 5/8 header.
My Plans now are, rip the heads off for a port job and heavy springs Match port the Manifolds. Carbs also need a bigger set of vents (i have 34's) and next time out I will run it without 1/2 a tank of fuel LOL!
I have 10 days off at Xmas more time in the shed
Thanks
FROSTY ·
Sorry Dave forgot the trans,
It was a $100 Col special ( i think he should have sold it for more), I will have to get the numbers for you.
Thanks
Jason
matberry ·
Hey Frosty, when are you going to put a cam in that has bumps on it??? lol
FROSTY ·
I know.....I'll make do with what i've gotfor the moment and down the track I will build a monster. ( I'm just practicing for now)
Dungbug ·
Lovely looking oval & some very good times, great work. 😎
Dasdubber ·
Nice work Jason - the oval looks sweet and some great consistency and times shown at the last tnt.
I have some different size dellorto vents if you want to try a few changes and some different jets. I also have a CB performance update kit which runs bigger vents and horizontal discharge tube.....had tried them in a splitty ute (dyno'd at leons motors recently) and although good for wide open throttle on the dyno runs, not so great (in his engine) for street driving. Could be worth a try if you're keen at any stage (were in 40 dells).
Al
FROSTY ·
Cool thanks AL i'll try my 34's and then I might hit you up for a loan of sme extras.
coletrickle ·
Nice work frosty but i notice you didn't mention that after putting on the CLA stickers you were straight into the nines over the 1/8.But seriously the oval is a rocket, your car is built out of shit and i love it but 20 years of collecting stuff and knowing people you have shown people what you can do and not a lot of big name parts betcha some people are now a bit envious!Gotta say though raise the rear up bigger vents a bit more traction 9.20's/9.30'sat close to 90mph thats my call. But with ported heads bigger springs thats gotta be into the high 8's at 90 plus your gonna want a tough box real soon i might know of one laying around doing nothing give me a call but call me from a pay phone your missus dosen't know who i am and i'd like to remain off her radar!
FROSTY ·
heads are off and the rear has been lifted 65mm. 90Mph is now the target.....No fan going back on either.
FROSTY ·
Heads are back from Dave B not sure how much was cut out..he also die ground one of the chambers, inlet and out let ports for me to copy over to the others. they are finished now and ready for reassembly. the compression was 8.3:1 and now 10.94:1 just have to finish putting it back together and back to the track soon.
I wonder if the misses will get pissed off if i get into the shed when the kids are opening their presents tomorrow morning LOL LOL LOL !!!!
Once again thanks Dave much appreciated !!
dangerous ·
10.94!!😂
That should have pick-up!
That was exactly .100" flycut.
Aussie ·
Awesome looking car. Great stuff 🙅
coletrickle ·
I got a fiberglass seat 4 ya and you should try my 45 dels or at least the 37mm venturies!
FROSTY ·
TNT this Sat at Willobank. Can't wait to take a couple more Commodore's in my shitbox ( I think I need a Falcon too) LOL
colonel mustard ·
anyone else heading to willowbank? Id be interested in going to watch...... (pssst, make a thread frostyyyy!)
jjwebb123 ·
Nice Project,looking Sweet as.
FROSTY ·
My Wife is back in the good books.....(for a short while) My Birthday is coming up and she knows I'm off to Willobank Sat night. CHECK OUT MY PRESENT..!!!
Now I will know when to shift....
matberry ·
Cool Frosty, you been a good boy!!!
Should go faster with that hangin on the dash.
You running the 45's with your new 'high compression' beast?
FROSTY ·
nah, i'm going to run the 40's first
Stanley ·
Gee Frosty....it's only set to 2500rpm
FROSTY ·
don't know what it will go to now with the heavier springs.....
FROSTY ·
Just got home.... 4 runs and progressivly quicker with each run i'm down to 14.43 at 93.3 MPH don't know what the 60f 1/8 was cos the dick in the commodore must have taken the time slip (smoked him and he took the evidence) not to bussy out there either.
I think it might be time for a Bigger Cam.
PS thanks for your help too Dave B👍👍
dangerous ·
9mph and a whole second improvement!!!!
Nice wrk dude.
not bad for a 1775cc engine with an engle 100 and 40mm carbs!!
coletrickle ·
Nice work jason u need to get that box looked at the firt run was straight out of the matt berry how to abuse your transmission handbook😂you need a close 3rd and 4th and a diff and its in the 13's at close to 100mph!That last run against that commy ute he is gonna need counciling after having your shit box drive past him at 1/2 track you got him by .5sec not bad.You gonna use that cam i gave you it's what the 1776 needs and while ur at it more head work since u now port heads!
Stanley ·
nice work Frosty....must have been that relaxed Friday....😁
FROSTY ·
Got to thanks Col too. He's loaning me a couple of things at the moment. Friday was a bussy day for me LOL.
matberry ·
Well done Frosty, sounds like the car went well. Good times 🙂
oldskl60 ·
great work frosty! good to hear you are upsetting the commodore crew...
Bring on the 13!!
FROSTY ·
Mate can't wait for a 13. ( didn't think I would even get into the 14's) I really need a close ratio box cause it dies heavily going from 3rd to 4th but it will do for the moment. My times were
r/t .011 60' 2.21 1/8 9.614 1/4 15.166 at 88.71mph
r/t .114 60' 2.15 1/8 9.516 1/4 14.997 at 89.65mph
r/t .053 60' 2.09 1/8 9.462 1/4 14.922 at 88.76mph
stolen time slip 1/4 14.43 at 93.3 mph
( last run with the fan belt off).
I'm out there again on Wed Feb 10th ( Can't help myself..)
FROSTY ·
10min away from Willobank this arvo and they cancelled the TNT..........( they send you a text to say the weather was no good) I couldn't wait to cane the guts out of it again and was crushed. oh well back to the shed
matberry ·
Bummer dude, at least the car is ready 👍
FROSTY ·
OK, its time for a new Cam I'm going for a W130 and still going to run the 1.25 rockers, next run will be Gunnadah all going well.
Turbo54 ·
Well done, nice times and cool car.
T54
FROSTY ·
OK i have the CAM in ( W130, thanks CT) just have to test the valve's won't hit tomorrow, i think it will be ok..... Not going to bother putting the tinwear back on cause it is only getting a couple of runs. I think this will be the most I can get out of it before spending some serious cash. From here I will go to Gunnadah for the 1/8 and one more trip to willobank for another tnt. I'm still running the std box and i am saving for a new one, that will be later in the year and all going well for Warwick.
matberry ·
Good work Frosty.
FROSTY ·
Found the problem from Gunnedah, the Valve with its collets on has pulled through the Retainer. The Valve has hit the top of the piston and bent it. the guide is rooted and the valve seat has been hit a few times and also has had it. It could be a quik fix and next time out I will have a rev limiter.
Stanley ·
Bad luck Frosty. Long way to go for that.
I think a rev limiter will help in your case..👍
FROSTY ·
Hi Stanley, I thought it was a short trip to get a ride in Dave's car, I would drive a lot further for the next one. ( I live in hope)
matberry ·
Bummer mate.
Rev limiter and moly retainers.
FROSTY ·
All finished, Head got a new guide and Seat, Crome Molly retainers with hardened keepers and i've gone back to 1:1 rockers. Wednesday night TNT here I come.
dangerous ·
???
typethreeking ·
whats the results from the TNT??
FROSTY ·
Result is another fix job on the engine.....Not sure what it is but bit of a knocking sound....enough that i put it on the trailer after two runs.
1st run
.252 60" 1.926 1/8 8.963 @74.58 mph 1/4 14.248 @91.35 fastest run ever. and again it died into 4th
2nd run tried to get off the line in 3rd gear ( what a dickhead).
.373 60" 3.167 1/8 10.317 @74.04 mph 1/4 15.602 @91.49
The engine sounded great to start with but i will have to get a rev limiter.... I'll go back to a 009 with a limiter rotor in it.
dangerous ·
14.24@91mph!
Thats flying now!
The 8.96@74.58 is lso awesome!
Stock valve 1775cc!
FROSTY ·
I found the Knock, it was two loose nuts on one of the rods. I will drop some new bearings in and i'm off again.
dangerous ·
you lucky dog!!
reub ·
good to hear... 👍
FROSTY ·
Hey There, I'm going to get this back together for Warwick ( 5 weeks) Crank has been ground, ordered bearing, new rods, elc fuel pump, clutch and pressure plate. I have a light weight seat to go in and some new light wheels for the front too.
Hoping to get a TNT in before Warwick ( shit I can't wait, what an unreal weekend)
baghall ·
Don't normally go for rats but I think this would look great.
FROSTY ·
I went out and had a run at Willobank last night, I have an issue with it not wanting to idle but apart from that its ready for Warwick. (something to do will low air speed and almost no venturi effect???? through the revs and top end is unreal)
60' 1.97
1/8 8.900 76.09mph
1/4 14.113 92.2mph
hellbugged ·
whoa that's moving Frosty!
h ·
cool! great stuff
dangerous ·
awesome dude!!!!!
still stock valves??😀👍
Burrelli ·
Thats good Frosty 13s are not far now!
FROSTY ·
Yep still stock valves...
humpty ·
Totally amazing efforts Frosty.... And here I thought the 14.8's I was doing with my NA 1776 was pretty good.... Your totally kicking it mate!
FROSTY ·
Thanks Humpty, it has been quite a bit of trial and error (with some advice too) . I think now the only way it will get any quicker is a better box ....( but i have said that a couple of times before)
FROSTY ·
All sorted now and ready for Warwick, just got to get the camping gear out.
humpty ·
Love the chassis strengtheners you've got there!!!.... And the sponge in the ash tray is for?
You prolly do this, but I thought I would mention it.... I fit tape over the handbrake button when I'm racing.... Makes staging a bunch safer and easier....
Don't forget the Warwick videos for those of us that can't be there!!!!!!
FROSTY ·
Hey Humpty, the sponge, it go's round a camera that mounts in the back ( stops a bit of the shake) and the strengther... when we took the body of the original pan the holes were stripped so i had to add those to bolt through. You missed the roll of tape in the door....I have no idea why i put it there.
I have never been a big fan of using the handbrake when starting...might have to give it a go.
I think there wil be stacks of video this year, seems like everyone has one of the Hero brand digital camera's
dangerous ·
Looks awesome Jason!!
Hope that tank is bolted in!!
Thanks for the food donation, should come in handy!!
FROSTY ·
Nah it was for new tee shirts
Stanley ·
lookin' good Frosty
baghall ·
Love reading about the engine work. Keep it up. So good the commies are getting a pasting by you.
FROSTY ·
Wahoo, just found this at the front door..( just in time for Warwick) . I opened it and shit it might take a while to workout the advance and max advance springs.
humpty ·
I'm sure there will be plenty of fellas who know their way around that gear.... Think Dave runs it in the lil' white Muffin Muncher!
Whack it in, through in a 8500 chip and work from there...
😀
FROSTY ·
I would ask dave but he away for a while
FROSTY ·
I went out to Willobank last night and again I've have had a best run,
60' 1.884
1/8 8.796 @ 75.65 mph
1/4 14.014 @ 93.09 mph (not my fastest mph)
Time for some work round the house.....
matberry ·
Holy cr#p dude....14.0 fantastic result....now get to work....on the volksie 😂
oldskl60 ·
nice one mate! great numbers... sooo close
Dasdubber ·
Excellent result mate, that is really moving. Well done.

FROSTY ·
Hey there, I have been working on a new car for Warwick and took it out to Willowbank tonight, this is basically the same engine/box/front end as the old 56.
I had a good night with
R/T .078
60' 1.882
1/8 8.695
mph 77.32
1/4 13.886
mph 92.63
Wahoo !!!! into 13's
will post pics tomorrow.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Pics or ban mate lol
dangerous ·
Good work Dude, glad that rack and peanut is in the right spot at 92+mph! 👍
FROSTY ·
I can't thank you enough for your advise Dave, it was a bit twitchy in the stearing but definitly no change in toe in/out at any suspension height. (shit it would have been a disaster where I had originaly put the rack) I did get asked to finish up for the night by the Andra guy because I didn't have an engine lid on. He said that any engine that you could get caught in while running in the staging lanes must be covered. I could see where he was coming from...
I will try to get some pics soon but have to go to work today.
Thanks
Jason
dangerous ·
13.88 with stock valves and port size.
Cool.
Stanley ·
Awesome stuff Frosty....👍
matberry ·
👍👍👍 You'd be stoked hey.👍👍👍
FROSTY ·
Yeh Matt very stoked, happness only lasted a day though, my Passat shit itself yesterday arvo and it now at VW getting injectors, pump and harness.... ( no new slicks and seat for Warwick)
vassy66T1 ·
Well done on the beetle Frosty.
I don't like hearing that about the Passat though (my sphincter constricts 🙅 )
FROSTY ·
Mine did too.... there go's the tax return $4900. Check out the vw watercooled forum and click on the " list of injector problems" thread. at least this will be my first real expence in four years ( it was all paid for buy work previously) I will have it back at the end of the week and can tow the beetle to Warwick for the drags
Stanley ·

I have a seat if your interested Frosty
FROSTY ·
I have a couple of changes for Sydney, upgrade on the gearbox Dave Butler ( massive thank you Dave!!) has converted an IRS box to swinger with a 3rd and 4th upgrade ( can't remember the numbers) , drop spindles up front, new brakes on the back with a couple of new steel lines too and a new heavier pressure clutch. Test and tune next Sat night to see if it will run a little quicker.
I hate to wish my life away but, man I can't wait for the road trip and racing in Sydney!!!!!
whathaveidone ·
Hope all goes well on sat. See you when you get here!!!!!
