Tacho

I plan on installing a tacho like this one in my 71 standard. It has oil temp, water temp, volts and the tach. I wont hook up the water temp to anything but i may hook it to a normal temp sender so it gives me the outside temp. How should i mount it and where are the suggested places for oil temp and volts, also what side of the coil do i go to.

if its oil temp, u can get an oil drain plug insert ...had one on my Kg 1835tp dunno for sure prob Vintage or George in Sydney can help.

oil pressure..... of course replaces the oil pressure switch (tube or sender??)

ha ha to the water temp

Tacho...am hooking mine up 2 morrow (not as fancy as yours ) but did u not get instructions with this unit?

air temp... i would connect maybe inside the water catcher of your fresh air vent (not on the metal parts as they may store heat from the sun).

Okay. I havent got it yet cause lack of funds but will on friday. I have heard people hook their oil temp sender into the same spot as the pressure sender. And the guy started tellin me how to hook water up and i said oh Okay. Well my car doesnt need water and he was like You sure. I said im sure then told him its a betle

Joel ·

you wont get much love using the water temp for ambient temp
most water temp gauges start at 40
i wouldnt be driving the dub if its that hot 😂

tacho feed just goes to the coil neg and the sender for the oil temp is easiest screwed into the pressure releife plug with the appropriate adapter
dont make the same mistake i did and almost killed my engine by screwing it into the sump plug hole
crushed the strainer over the pickup tube doing that and in the sump plate never gives an accurate reading for some reason

neither does the pressure sender port
needs to be submerged in the sump oil

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

I had a look at its scale and it went to 10 degrees. It gets colder than that but i would rather use it than just sit it with nothing hooked up, might put it in the engine bay.

OKay, i knew tach went to the coil wasnt sure what side.

Whcich pressure relief valve, pump end or flywheel. And where should i get the adapter from.

Not putting anything lower than the sump plate on my car.

Where should i hook the voltage one up to, battery or where.

Cheers

Joel ·

well i would say the plug closest to the pump would be best, any hydraulic supplies shop like enzed, pirtek etc would sell an adapter
it would be something like an M18x1.5 to 1/8thNPT
but just take the old plug to them and theyll match it

voltmeter hook to an ignition source, you dont want it running all the time itll flatten the battery

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

OKay, so if i take it to pirtek they should be able to hook me up.

Do need to drop the oil to take the plug out?

Joel ·

nah but it will drop whatevers in the gallery around it though so chuck something under it

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Okay will do, its only costing me 100 now gf said she will chip in.

bajachris88 ·

maybe get a potentiometer hooked to the water temp guage, and turn it into an 'awesomeness' gauge.

Turn the potentiometer when awesomeness is increased 😂

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

i was thinking putting it near exhaust so it reads super hot and worries others

cam070 ·

Ages ago I ran a VDO oil temp gauge. VDO used to sell a sensor that replaced the dip stick. Used to work fine and meant nothing hung down low and you didn't have to tap into any high pressure oil areas. Not sure if these are still available or not.

grogy ·

careful u dont hook tacho up to the wrong side of the coil. i did it with a stewart warner tacho years ago and just one touch on the wrong side killed a new tacho

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

where should i mount it, i want it under the dash but not in the way, who has mounted them under and found a good spot.?

donn ·

Tacho should be mounted where it can be seen easily while driving, under the dash? may as well mount it on the floor behind the drivers seat 🙄

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Was muckin around before witha cd seeing where i could see it best, i was thinking maybe under the ash tray like in that area, does anyone have any pics.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Has anyoe got ideas, its getting mounted friday so need ideas asap.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Okay, probably a stupid question but which terminal is the negative one on the coil.

Smiley ·

Have a look on the ends where they come out of the end of the coil. Should have a little + and - on there.
Failing that the positive wire is the one that runs back up into the car up inside the pillar and the negative ones runs to the little cylinder that is screwed to the side of the distributor.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Alrighty thanks for the help, i looked for symbols but hard to see.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

What is this, i found it connected to the positive side of the coil. It was mounted behind the coil on the firewall.

Smiley ·

It's probably the voltage regulator. All Beetles with generators have them and some with alternators do too. there's normally mounted in the back of the engine bay, on the fanhousing or under the rear seat on the LHS. It is to prevent the generator/alternator from overcharging the battery by limiting the voltage to a maz of 13.8 volts. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no auto electrician..........yet🥷

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

here is a pic of the thingo,

Smiley ·

That's the condenser. That's the little cylinder thing that should be screwed to the side in the dizzy. And there's normally connected to the negative side of the coil.

Smiley

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

OKay then, what is this thing?

Joel ·

the little one your holding is a radio noise supressor

stops that electrical whine that radios make when u rev the engine

the condensor on your dissy follow the lead from it to your coil, thats one you wanna hook the tach too

some coils are marked 1 and 15 rather than pos and neg
15 is the power and 1 is the neg to tach/points

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

OKay, yeah i hooked it p and works, only thing is when i have the switch at 4 cylinder it revs to like 7000 rpm, but if i put it on 4 cylinder then it doesnt seem to go past 4000 unless i really give it to it. Could this just be because the sticker is on wrong?

And it came with oil pressure instead of oil temp, its got the same sized bolt bit as the vw sender but it has a tighter wound thread ca i just put it in?

Joel ·

those monsta tachs are pretty sensitive and really hate points

if your not planning on getting electronic ignition any time soon go to dicksmith and grab a rectifier diode
the part # is IN4004 and put it inline with the tach to coil wire, theyre a couple of cents each
theyre polarity sensitive and only work one way from memory the silver band goes toward the tach

i did this years ago works well, but put the diode inside the car somwhere, i was putting them at the coil end but they dont like the heat of the engine

also insulate the legs really well, if they touch anything metal the engine will cut out 😂

ian.mezz ·

it helps if you read the instruction😂

Like don said no good if you cant see it like mine.
I just change gear when it feels rite🤪

Nope because your beetle should only rev to about 4000rpm

If your a scone gobbler 🤘

the subi revs to 7000rpm

my 1970 to 5000rpm

Did you read the manual did you? 😂
