The other day I turned over bug on and it wouldn't want to go into gear - when i tried to force it into reverse it just shrieked. I turned it off and turned it on again and it worked perfectly.
It did it again today, so I tried the same technique thinking perhaps the engine had shaken and not married up with the tranny properly, however now it doesn't want to go into gear at all. When i push it into reverse the car stalls.
Does anyone have any clues what this could be? There doesn't seem to be any clutch slippage, so I don't really know what the problem could be?
Any help would be much appreciated. Also, if any could hazard a guess, what sort of price are we associating with the possible problem (as a struggling uni student, I need to know these things before Christmas) that would be an awesome help!
Cheers and Big Ears,

Sounds like clutch cable gone south, but coming good again a bit odd. Is the clutch pedal feel a bit vague or softer than usual?
Ollie ·
Nope, still feels pretty alright to me. Haven't noticed much of a difference.
I just tried it again then, and it goes into gear now with a bit of force, but then seems to lock itself in whatever gear it is.
I've got a short shifter kit, could that be a problem? I've herd on some occasions the kit can shift slightly and cause some problems.
Also, to replace to the clutch, do you need to pull the entire engine out?

If it changes ok with the engine off, the clutch isn't disengaging properly, maybe just an adjustment of the cable will get it right. Put it in 1st gear, start the engine with foot on clutch, if the car doesn't go fowards, see where the clutch engages, if it is straight away, it needs adjusting for starters, you want it to statr to grab only about 20mm from the floor approx.

And the quick shift kit shouldn't 'move'.
And yes, you need to pull the engine OUT to replace the clutch.😁

OK so it changes perfectly fine with the engine off.
It starts with it in first gear with the clutch in, but when i put it back into Neutral then try push it back into a gear it doesn't budge.
When I'm in first gear and the motor on, it doesn't seem to disengage until further, like 50 mm?

Do you mean engage? As in, as you raise the pedal from being right down on the floor, the clutch starts to bite (drive the car foward) 50mm up from the floor. If so the clutch sounds like it's operating properly.
Ollie ·
Correct! So am I safe to assume it's the clutch cable hopefully?
matberry ·
No, that sounds ok. There is definate travel of the pedal from the floor BEFORE the clutch STARTS to grab, either making the engine rpm drop slightly or the car move foward (no handrake on level concrete).
