On a 1973 100 VW Beetle, the axle shafts coming out of the transaxle go inside a tube. A rubber boot (i presume a CV boot) covers what, a CV or something else.
Should oil poor out of there when replacing the boots, I just presumed they where a CV joint and it would be grease. Is it something else and I presume then that its a sae 90 gear oil.
Thanks Trev

A '73 1300 Beetle has a swing axle gearbox, they don't have the usual CV joint that is lubricated with greese, swing axle VWs use gear oil from the gearbox.
It is normal for gear oil to come out there when replacing boots, the axle tubes have oil in them.

Thanks Menangler
When I put it back together, is it just a gearbox top up or do I have to fill the tubes with a qty of oil
Thansk again Trev

just top up the gearbox thru the hex plug on the side until oil overflows thru the hole
