VW Portland 2010

VWMA Editor ·

Hi Everyone,

No doubt most of you would have read the coverage of VW Warwick in the latest issue of VWMA. Warwick wrapped up a very successful 2009 VWMA drag racing series, and the support of Mike Kristen and Custom Bugs & Buses was crucial to the success of the series. I personally thank Mike for his support as the major sponsor and as an avid VW drag racer. For 2010, Mike has decided to concentrate solely on preparing and racing his stable of VW drag cars, and as such will be present at the track as a competitor, but not as the major sponsor. The 2010 VWMA drag racing series welcomes on board Mick Motors as the major sponsor. As you know, the Mick Motors drag car driven by Rohan Keylock was the Fastest 8 Runner-up at Warwick, so Mick decided that sponsoring the 2010 series was the next logical step. Thanks Mick.

VW Portland kicks off the 2010 series on February 19th-21st. The programme and event details are available at www.vwma.net.au and registration is now open. The programme includes a dune buggy day on the Friday, which was run for the first time this year and proved very popular.

One piece of news not mentioned in the latest issue was the winner of the State Of Origin Drag Racing trophy, which went to Queensland again and literally came down to the number of Qld competitors who support the weekends. Hopefully this will be challenged next year.

See you on the track.

Cheers
Craig

FROSTY ·

Who's making the trip down from Qld next year?

VWMA Editor ·

Information regarding the dune buggy day on Friday 19th Feb (day before the drag racing weekend) is now available under event programme information in the VW Portland drag section. This day was held for the first time in 2009, and is now a regular addition to the drag racing activities.

VWMA Editor ·

Hi Everyone,

I trust you all had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year break.

Like most things during the January/February period, time gets away, and incredibly, there are only 5 weeks left till entry cut-off and 6 weeks left to VW Portland. If you haven't already, then visit www.vwma.net.au for the weekend programme and activities, which includes dune buggy fun on the Friday. There are some conditions and a need to register interest for the Friday buggies, so please see the VWMA website for details.

Thanks goes to Scott Cleary from SouthCoast Raceway and Jamie Pridham from the Portland Dune Buggy club for assisting me with the continuation of the VW Portland weekend. For those unaware, last year the Portland council imposed a restriction on all Sunday drag racing for 2010, largely in response to noise concerns. However, the council were gracious enough to hear the merits of a proposal for making one exception and allowing the all Volkswagen weekend to continue. With support from the local people, the VW Portland weekend was fortunate to be given the nod. This makes the event quite unique for SouthCoast raceway, and I strongly encourage as many VW drivers and spectators to attend the weekend to demonstrate that the VW drag racing community is appreciative of the opportunity to continue with the two day racing format. I know from past years the event has become increasingly popular, so I'm confident that VWMA and the SouthCoast Raceway can continue to host the weekend each year.

More updates weekly.

See you on the track.

Cheers
Craig

Hi Everyone,

Two of Australia's most fervent VW drag racing enthusiasts, Rod Penrose and Mike Kristen, will again light up the tyres at VW Portland for 2010. As well as being huge supporters of the Oz straight line racing scene, (and excited that a VW only series is now running successfully in Australia), both Rod and Mike set the bench mark for performance and craftmanship. Rod will front with his ever reliable and quick 1968 Chop Top Bug, while Mike will once again shake the ground with The Twins Ghia. Also joining the blown ranks will be Darren Hobson in the re-birthed Cranky II! The sight and sound of these three cars alone will impress the Portland locals.

Honour for the first official entry to reach the VWMA inbox is shared between Paul Kennedy and Jeff Sable, both from South Australia. Only a cyber beat separated their official receipt.

There are only 3 weeks to the entry cut-off date of February 12th, and if you are intending to race, I would appreciate an entry as early as possible to facilitate the paperwork. The Friday dune buggy activity also requires an expression of interest to me by the same date for catering purposes.

And yes, the Tappet Cover Racing will be held on the Saturday night in the SouthCoast Raceway club rooms.

Cheers
Craig

VWMA Editor ·

There are now only three weeks to go to the event and two weeks until entry cut-off. If you are intending to compete, please visit www.vwma.net.au and either complete the entry form online or post in a hard copy (there is a PDF version available).

This year, thanks to Rod Penrose and VWMA, there are a number of additional cash incentives up for grabs.

1. Most Points - $150. Points are allocated for such things as round wins, best ET, fastest MPH, extra competition entry (Friday night Street drags, Chicago Shootout), best presented, etc. Last year Andrew Clarke from SA was the Portland points winner, as well as going on to win the series points competition for both Portland and Warwick.

2. Most Improved - $150. This is based on your overall performance for the weekend, and takes into account whether you are a rookie, class competing in, type of vehicle, etc.

3. Fastest Rookie - $150. Any class over the weekend.

4. Each Class winner is also awarded free entry to VW Warwick in October - Fastest 8, VW Aircooled, VW Watercooled, Specials, and VW Bodied Other Engine.

A unique VW Portland trophy is also awarded with all categories, including runner-up.

Cheers
Craig

Hi All,

There is just over a week left until entry cut-off for VW Portland 2010. Entry forms can be found at www.vwma.net.au and can be completed online or posted to VWMA PO Box 3551 Loganholme Qld 4129.

This year gate passes, weekend information and the official programme will be available from me at the track on Friday at the VWMA trade stall. In previous years driver entry packs had been posted out prior to the event, however, this sometimes led to misplaced passes, etc, so I'm trailing this method for 2010. Gate staff at SouthCoast Raceway will have a competitor and crew list at the entry to the track to allow you access when first arriving. After that you will always need to have your weekend passes with you.

Mike Adi and the Goggomobil Supercharged Dart return for 2010, so if you missed the pocket rocket jelly bean last year, don't make the same mistake twice. Andrew Ermel is also set to defend his Fastest VW 8 crown, and rumour has it that a few more ponies have been found over the Christmas / New Year break.

Volkswagen Group Australia have come one board for VW Portland 2010, and full details of their involvement and participation will be revealed next week. A special thank you to David Brown, Trade Parts Manager VGA, for making possible this exciting development.

I'm in Melbourne this weekend (yes, driving to Melbourne twice in the same number of weeks - bonkers is the word you are looking for!!) to attend the first VW Watercooled show, SE DubsFest. I'll be promoting VW Portland at the show, so if you are in attendance and would like to know more about the drag racing weekend, particularly for the Watercooled bracket of racing, please come and see me at the VWMA trade stand.

See you on the track.

Cheers
Craig

As part of the VW Portland drag racing weekend there are a number of other VW activities on offer:

1. On the Friday there is dune buggy activity with the Portland Dune Buggy club;

2. A street parade and display through the Portland CBD and onto the foreshore on the Saturday morning;

3. VW Tappett Cover Racing on the Saturday evening;

4. Sunday Show'n'Shine at the track, judged by VWMA, with several categories and VW Portland trophies

All the information on these extra activities and the weekend of racing can be found at www.vwma.net.au

Hi All,

This is the final week for entries to VW Portland 2010. Entry forms can be found at www.vwma.net.au and can be completed online or posted to VWMA PO Box 3551 Loganholme Qld 4129.

As mentioned last week, Volkswagen Genuine Parts has come on board for VW Portland 2010 as a sponsor for the weekend. Thanks goes to David Brown, Trade Parts Manager for Volkswagen Group Australia, for making this possible. Information about Volkswagen Genuine Parts will be available at the VWMA trade stand and in the latest issue of VWMA.

Ross Freestone and Hounddog will make their debut Portland appearance for 2010. Ross had some minor issues at Warwick which have now been sorted, and he is looking forward to putting down some quick passes. Other interstaters making the trip include Peter Page (Qld), Chris Holland (NSW), Morgan Smith (NSW), Ryan Heymans (NSW), Rose Merrett (NSW) and Sebastion Nadjer (NSW). This year also sees a healthy watercooled bracket competing, from early Mk1s through to late model Audis. Matt Gardner, well known for his commentary at the Vic DOTVW has managed to have his early Mk1 finished and ready to give the 1/8th mile a blast!

Tappet Cover racing will again be held in the SouthCoast Raceway club rooms on the Saturday evening. Entry is free, and open to all ages. Rules and regulations regarding racing and building your Tappet Cover can be found on the VWMA website.

See you on the track.

Cheers

Ross Freestone

dangerous ·

Ross' car should be a great addition to Porland.
With the excellent air quality and good track, it should be pretty quick.
Ross' engine makes a good 50hp more than mine and weighs about 100kg lighter.
Looking forward to hearing some live track reports!!

Also the GOGGO has run into the sixes since last years event, so that looks to be spectacular too.

Dasdubber ·

Can't wait to hear about the action guys - hopefully the support of this great event will be as good as ever. Unfortunately couldn't put the funds together in time to fly down to spectate but will be waiting with baited breath for updates!
Al
Good luck to everyone for final preparations and safe travels.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Holy crap.....said in true Pete style.....2.30am for 3.00am leave..........safe traveling Pete, get some SLEEP.

Hope the event goes well, wish I was coming.......next year😵

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Talked to Troy tonight and he and Pete got into Sydney at westi's workshop at about 3.30pm and were still there at 6.45pm waiting for him to finish a job. Then off to Westi's house for some sleep and an early departure tomorrow morning. So far trip is going well and without incident.

Dasdubber ·

Safe travels everyone including Pete - hope you get some decent sleep soon mate!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Chatted to Troy late this arvo and Pete and he were about 180k's from Portland. Pete's T3 crapped a driveshaft so they drove around till they found Wolfsburg automotive(weren't far from there) who helped them out and get them on their way again. By the time I post this they should almost be at the track so long as everything else has gone to plan.

matberry ·

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE wrote:Pete's T3 crapped a driveshaft
Pete's T4.....T3's don't crap driveshafts, it's those damn front wheel drives.

Hope they got it fixed ok.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Yeah T4 LOL. So far so good. Arrived at Portland no worries and after a quick chat right now they were watching the street meet and having a bit of a relax. Troy did mention that the old 1300 Pete used to own which is now owned by one of the boys from CBB I believe had just destroyed a geabox or had some sort of driveline failure.

WOW!
Thanks everyone for posting those pictures and links!
Sounds like it was an excellent event as always.

Good to hear from Mike Kristen, that he got in some very quick passes,(6.1 and 6.0 at 121 and 123mph)
taking off in second gear and with only 24 psi boost,(I used 37 to 42!).
Also good to hear from Peter, Troy and Ross over the course of the week end,
and that they both ran in the sixes, with Pagey going to the final.
Pete running into the 6.80's with a normally asirated combo is awsome,
and Ross's Houndog 103 mph shows how much promise that car holds.
Looks like James' fasty was finally showing its true potential,
and sounds like DoC's Shrapnel had an awesome debut!
Good work everyone, competitors and organizers!

Boostn ·

Thanks to all the peeps who came from interstate, the quality of cars was A1.
Congrats to David O on an awesome debut with shrapnel!!!!! love it , looks hot and performs just as well.
And Peter Page with Rod engine, WOW !! a perfect package!!!! Awesome guys!
My Junka had not enough clutch for the power but still broke an input shaft or the reverse gear sleeve that joins the input shaft to the main shaft, work that one out?
John in stylin ground third gear one to many times and now needs a gearbox freshen up.
James was doing well in his fastback , just taking it slowly at his own pace getting use to it and going 90 mph.
Mark was still trying to find out how to make the little 1994cc engine leave on boost on a good track.

We all had a good weekend, thanks to all who participated.

typethreeking ·

pete and i have just got home now 4pm, what a drive but a great weekend, the car ran perfectly except for a small clutch issue which we pulled the engine out and fixed it up. With rods engine the car ran PB after PB to petes delight and now we can hit willowbank for 10s. Thanks to westi and macca for the help and laughs keeping us awake on the road..

This photo was captured near Beechworth/Glenrowan area--where Ned Kelly committed his rustling/shootings etc.
Pictured is one of his ancestral descendants with a trophy wrongfully possessed. He had to drive 100Ks to be out
of Pagey's reach before he was game enough to pose with the much coveted quick 8 trophy. What a hard luck
story with Pagey's yacht being blown down the track to red light & Rod blowing the clutch at the line to coast
on through for the win.A real let down for Pagey as Rod normally uses both sides of the strip to reinstate red
light losers.Anyway Pete I hope that is the worst thing that will happen to you the rest of your life.
ps Rod still had the same smile on his face all the next day too & was an enjoyable sight as Rod is most helpful & giving of himself.Cheers--Ross

Dear Mat...have posted these sand buggies for you as you displayed some interest in riding in one.The 1300
unit seemed to accelerate like my drag car & what these guys do with them on the side of the dunes is
something trying to explain it with words is impossible.Portland was well organised thanks to Hughesy & reasonably
well represented.Seeing Mike's low six was very rewading to watch & a testament to his persistence.Rod aka Ned
Kelly 6.41 on a 6.4 was a good calculation for a thief !!!The Dog's engine I found had been chained up with the
limiter indicator on 8,400 & the engine cutting spark @8k. On my last run I got game and looked at the tacho as it
went flat in 3rd.It has been a wonder with the numbers being down for its power but has given the old fellow some
bum in it time.Have a go at this immaculate Mitso buggy..Regards-Ross.

Hi !! All !! , well great trip over all , even after a little red light in final (- .029) . Can not thank everyone enough that came along to crew and Vwma , vw Australia , Westside Mufflers , Dangerous Dave Engineering , Rod Richardson for helping me to attend this year event .
Was not going to attend this year as I'm fixing up our house so after being invited , we had less then 2weeks to be race ready .
My engine wasn't ready so Rod step up with is from his 48ida bug (11.47sec all steel)
His engine (more power) , less weight (No dry sump , nitrous equipment ) had me excited for a good et from my car.
Car really like the extra power on tap , layed back on wheelie bars , good burnouts , felt real smooth to.
After Sunday morning test & tune run , we had a hard clutch peddle so motor was pulled out and found clutch plate was loose . Fix just in time as first round was called to start line .
Won all rounds of racing (4 wins) so was very happy with car going into final against Rod Penrose .
Car seemed to roll while waiting for green light ,then red lighted my race away ( I still won to the other end of track 😁)

Dasdubber ·

Well done on making the final Pete, and congratulations to Rod P for the win.

Sounds like another great event, great photos too!

There really is some awesome photography there Chris!
So much information available if you look closely.

These guys could do with some stiffer tortion bars.
This is one reason axles break.

Also note how most squat down more on the drivers side.
Is that the side that most of you guys broke axles on?

It was great to finally meet you guys.... And get to see the toys you guys have.... Shame the weekend didn't go so well for you, but my god those cars have some poke!!! 😁 I have another pic of you I can post instead if you like?... Funny you should mention some boost for the Rag.... I took Pat (the owner) for a blast in my car a few weeks back (when he visited WA) and I think he got the message.... It might happen!.... On that note.... I took the POS out for a spin today and got a Defect Notice from the local plod... That's the second time in 20 months!!!!

Hi Dave and Co.

I am back online after heading off for work straight after portland.

Had a great time, and the car started to work well. Just learning how to launch with the turbo motor. Starting to get the idea at last. Quickest time was 7.8 and fastest was just over 90mph.

I did at least 8/10 better than I had previously in the 1/8 and I didn't do a decent run the whole weekend.

Niggly little gremlins came out, and most are now shaken out. You know what is like, get rid of one, and find another.

Interesting comment about the torsion bars but do consider that I am running 30mm new sway-aways now with QA1's and swayaway springplates with JCL retainers. I think I launched in the photo here at around 4500 rpm. Still got 4k left to play with here. The QA1's are on a light setting, they will need to get stiffened a bit more for next time out.

It is a heavy car especially compared to Ross's.

Missed not seeing you there this year Dave, I am hoping to go nth later this year to join the fun.

I am looking forward to getting back to the 1/4.

Back to stock height... 60mm beam, stock spindles, wide 5 discs on the front, stock smoothies with 165's all round, bumpers back on, carpet and then I'll give it a shot.... Everything else works a treat.... If they find more issues, I guess the POS will become a full-time racer.... We'll see....

OLD-DOG ·

Dear "DANGEROUS"Dave...yes a picture paints a thousand words.Yes axle squat ia a dangerous area for the driveline to reside in.One thing in the "DOG'S favour is those sway away axles of mine are the old good steel type.Henry generously lent me those 28s to try as it was our best option at the time & it is quite obvious that they are inadequate let alone put them on a 100% traction track where the problem will worsen.I will say this whilst the rear is going down the steering department is still in existence & the car lacks the dreaded violence that it had initially at Willowbank. The stiffer the rear the more higher the frontal air gap will become!!!The car's energy is being absorbed on the "squat" which is good for clutch & diff preservation but an obstacle for good 60 footers.I have to find the compromise point now as the car is so directional & easy to pilot.Regards/well wishes..Ross-"OLD DOG"

i always thought since we are rhd, the driver weighing the right side down and the motor spins that way also, the lhd would be better for drag racing as i imagine it would help even up the load. ,,,,,,,,,really enjoyed seeing all the pics . thanks greg

hi Greg,
While the engine DOES rotate clock wise, the REACTION FORCE is actually reduced a little by he driver being on the RHS.
If the engine ws front mounted it wouls help to have the driver on the LHS.

I think in this instance it is just that the drivers weight(between 80 to 100kg) is transfered to the rear,
and it shows slightly.

My car is about 1/2" higher on the RHS to compensate.
This equated to less than 2 degrees of spring plate angle.

Great shots there Pete, thanks. It's always great to see what the car's doing off the line. I really ejoyed lining up alongside you in SHRAPNEL. In that run I pulled the big red eye yet agian -.078 to your .048, slick!!! Looks like I need to stiffen the compression on those shocks a tad. 27mm bars are still taking a pounding!

Overall we had a great weekend for the first time out in the car.
Saturday: 1st run; RT .313, 60ft 1.571, MPH 90.36, ET 7.269
2nd run; RT -.056, 60ft 1.570, MPH 85.71, ET 7.551 ( missed shift to 3rd)

Hi Dave,
great debut!

Is that your old engine from the red car,
or a whole new deal (except carbs instead of EFI)?
If so, it is freat to see what weight reduction can do!

Huge improvement changing the main jet on Sunday!

Good work!

Hey David C
great weekend, was really impressed with your car, considering you told me you were going to take it easy lol, I love the pin striping.. very old school.
I ment to ask you were the the head lights air brushed or stick ons and who did them?
My weekend wasn't the best as I broke the cluth release fork Michael Clark

Dak-A-Tak ·

Henry our weather man , said Saturday was 2700 ft around 20% water and Sunday was 1700ft , about the same water % .
Good to see David C that you ran some nice numbers what jetting did you run . I had Rods motor richen up from 190 (dyno) to 205 main jets . Running tyres at 17 to 18 lbs trying to spin tyre alittle ,also good for tranny too .
Allmotor guys did real well over week-end . Great race to david, more seat time will help those cherrys ( Thats what I should do , after giving rod the win )

OLD-DOG ·

To.......David O'Connor.SHRAPNEL debut must having certainly provided you with a huge reward of satisfaction.
I was lucky enough to be drawn against you & see how busy the OLD DOG was to catch you when you did a
7.2 on a 7.2 @ 94.54mph...on a minus 114 red light.....being paired up against an old fart like me should not have
rattled your nerves !!!You have to stretch the tree to learn the tightropes. The OLD DOG that run did a 6.96@
102.51mph & your new ride appeared strong from inside my cab.We have found the indicated rev limit is 500rpm
short & now we will be able to stretch the DOG'S hind legs.Anyway well done Dave. Your little girl was well into it
as was your wife which was great..
Congatulations,kind regards & well wishes..Ross.
ps I bet you have more of a chance of forgetting your red light than PAGEY has of forgetting his !!!!!

HS618 ·

David O'- congratulations on a beautifullly presented and sucessful Volkswagen!!!. Remember, Red lights are OK and needed (but only in time trials)
Pete, ever the professional, looked great, went hard (look forward to racing you sometime)
Ross, maybe a to-do list on the dashboard will help? (I've got one I can loan you)
Rod, the terms "go straight and go hard" can be used together . Excellent job and the win to boot!!!
To everyone else racing at Portland, good to see so many of you out there, racing and having fun, gaining experience, knowledge and supporting the marque
Craig and the rest of the organisers - job well done!!!
Mike and Darrin - proud to be associated with you
Hanging around the CBB stable reminds me of a musical saying I adhered to in a life long past "Play it loud OK?"

davidoconnor ·

Dave you got it , this is the old 2276 motor from my red "street " Beetle. It was in moth balls for around 4 years (?) while we worked on the big motor. The 2386 has failed in 3 out of 3 outings with flat cam and lifter issues!!!

You might recall the Street Eliminator Heads; both you and Brownie must have got sick of the sight of them over the years with the amount of work you put into them: THANKS, it's finally paying off! This motor is now running IDA's instead of the injection and making much more power with the changeover! I still can't work this out, I was always a strong believer in EFI ???

Pete on Sunday we changed the main jet to a 200, dyno was a 195.

Michael the headlights are indeed stickers. I took a photo of the lenses in my other Beetle and got Jon Kruger to print a sticker up for me. I'm sure he can print more if you want a set.

Ross it was a real treat lining up along side you I look forward to a second chance!!

Henry it's amazing how quickly this car reacts off the line . Much quicker than my porky 69 Beetle! I'll be using this as my excuse for the red eyes.

Now where's the closest 1/4 mile track. It looks like another interstate trip. Damn those SA politicians

EFI should be easier to tune,

davidoconnor wrote:This motor is now running IDA's instead of the injection and making much more power with the changeover! I still can't work this out, I was always a strong believer in EFI ???
I think EFI is going to be better than IDA's , you have so much more control . Were you running wideband or narrowband . What injectors/fuel pressure regulator . Did the fuel rail store enough fuel at constant WOT for the 1/4 .
There are so many things to consider when installing a full efi system . Even simple things like altitude correction can make a difference . Not all stand alone systems will have these features and some may be good for a base simple tune but will not work as well as an IDA on full throttle thats jetted correctly . And the most important is logging ability . You can actually see whats going on !

HS618 ·

Ross, my list is shorter than your burnouts!!! As for my car - I had no room left in my bag

Rose I think that if you looked closely there were still a lot of rocks left in the paddock. It was a case of use what you had. I can remember many years ago whilst holidaying with my parents in our kombi I was told the walls were buildt to keep the rabbits out of the paddocks. Too many rabbits in Victoria.

From the Dry Stone Walls Association website:

"The construction of Australia's dry stone walls not only marked the boundaries of land-holdings and defined paddocks and stockyards but also helped to clear the land so that crops could be grown and sheep and cattle could be safely introduced. Such walls were also used as a barrier against the 'rabbit plague' that, at one time, threatened economic ruin for many farming families. In some places, such as mining areas and difficult terrain, the craft was used to construct retaining walls for roads or create flat land for housing."

Convicts certainly built some of the dry stone walls in Tasmania and I was always told that some of those in the land surrounding Geelong were built by prisoners, but that might be unreliable.
