Are there or were there any volksy powered dragsters or altereds in Australia?
dangerous ·
The only few I can remember were the one Peter Keegan built in the mid 70s with his supercharged engine,
and Ross Bulloch("Hurk the Turk") had a supercharged VW pwered dragster(GM371 and 85.5x82 ex-Thornton engine)
in the early 90s that was eventually converted to V6 Commadore power.
Will see if I can find some pics.
But I reckon you could build a chassis your self for less than the shipping cost.
If you build an altered at least it will fit on your trailer.
vassy66T1 ·
Go the altered!!! Look fantastic and a wild ride ❗😁
Stanley ·
Well....looks like I might have another project then.
Thanks for the info Davo....oh and the plans....now where's my pipe bender😁

You be better buying a proven car with passes on it , when you add up all extra's (wheels , steering ,safety gear ,diff , ect ) . About $3500 to bring here is the only draw back but you will spend that and more on safety clothes ! PLus a motor with POWER !! all adds up real quick .
Nice dream Stanley !!
Stanley ·
All proven cars with passes on them had to start somewhere Pete
My turbo beetle was a dream once as was your car.
Now...what info have you got? Surely I can't be the only person who has thought of this
humpty ·
Nuts....... I like! 👍
dangerous ·
Hurks dragster:
pretty sure that is a power gle,
but may be a trimatic.
Either are good choices.
dangerous ·
Hurk sent me these photos in 1992 after I tracked him down through David Cook,
former owner and editor of Dragster Australia magazine.
At the time of the letter, Hurk had only got into the 11's with the dragster
because he was still sorting the trans and fuel system out.
But a later meeting at the winternationals in 1993,
he had acheived a 10.2@131mph,
which made his car the fastest et of any VW powered vehicle in Australiaat that time.
humpty ·
Where is it now?
dangerous ·
Last I heard it was sold, and had a V6 commy engine.
Probably still storage in SA being no 1/4 mile there at the moment.
colonel mustard ·
ya need a long trailer for that boy!

Whether you buy or build,
the safety clothes will cost the same.
You are going to need them
no matter which car you drive that is quicker than 10.99.
There IS a lot to be said about buying a proven car,
...hell, that was what my reasoning was when I purchased Peter Keegans hill climb car all those years ago.
Unfortunately it did not turn out as planned, as can happen with these things.
But the learning curve was something I would never have had otherwise.
But as it turns out, I realised the reason i do things the way that I do,
is because for me,
dragracing is more abut the "journey",(learning curve)
as opposed to just going fast.
I am sure that some people do their chosen hobbies for all different reasons.
Some just want to go fast.
Some want the glory and fame,
some just want to win.
And there is nothing wrong with any of those things.
But for me,
(and I am guessing stanley too, although he can speak for himself)
it is all about trying things for myself.
It does make a whole lot of sense to buy a car that is proven, either here or from over seas.
But sometimes,
outlaying a big chunk of dollars in one hit,
is never in the budget.
...but I think if a bloke from Orange (PK), or from Kilburn SA (Hurk),
can build a dragster in his back yard
with a hacksaw and a stick welder,
then I sat to Stanley:
go for it dude.
tassy74ida ·
Well said dave!! I reckon go for it stanley..... : )
Stanley ·

You hit the nail on the head Davo.
Building something from nothing is what it's all about, driving it is just the cream on the top.
I have a one son who is a mechanic and another who is a sheety so i'm looking at this as a long term family project. Number one priority is getting Frankenstein back on the track with the blower.
I'm just researching at the moment. Appreciate all the info and comments.
SuperOwen ·
The big advantage of buying a running car is you can get out on the track asap, and then make your changes etc rather than having a never ending project filling up your garage and getting sold off as bits in a few years time when you never finish it. If your into altered quite a lot of nostalgia altered running valiant 6's etc seem to pop up from time to time at pretty reasonable prices. Biggest problem is the fact that the chassis usually needs to be heavily modified to accomodate a flat four, not a huge deal but something to think about.

I spot a Honda Z360 LOL
Have always thought about a front engined dragster with Volksy power would certainly be a quick bit of gear set up in the right way. Be keen to see this one develop Stanley!!
Paint scheme?? My guess would be satin black and silver LOL
Dak-A-Tak ·
Yes , all good points ! Just do the home work , have a talk with Peter Duffy at willowbank (fiat turbo slingshot rail) he has built afew dragsters on the cheap. Modified class is very tough to go rounds in but would be nice to see any vw power car running .
vassy66T1 ·
If I was going to build a drag car (and I am not!!) it would be an altered.
Go Stanley 👍

sweet 🙂
Stanley ·
this is cool
coletrickle ·
A little off track but in 92 when i was working @ nickens brothers engines in texas they were developing an autocraft for vinny barrone it was custom ordered with a ford bellhousing/liberty clutchless trans to run in comp eliminator in G/ECONO DRAGSTER.Don't know if they got it finished but on paper it was a killer combo if i rembember correct other simular cars were in the low 9's with sub 2lt backyard setups.Go on stanley you know you want to and front engine to!And when you get the f/e dragster sorted and in the 9's you can use you new skills to lengthen the chassis get a greek coupler and a second engine and you got a flat 8 f/e digger shit year cletus and if you got any money left over you could make it pretty!
11CAB ·
Something like this would be seriously cool....... Go for it Stanley
Dak-A-Tak ·
This car has run 9.30's in usa ,
Nice front motor car that runs 1/8 mile in usa
humpty ·
Always had a soft spot for the 'slingshot' front engined digger.... The Paradise Express is an awesome bit of kit to be sure, but that white one looks like it might be achievable on a reasonable budget...
pete wood ·
love that last one. they look pretty rudimentary, so it couldn't be that hard to build one.
The term diggers goes back to the days before organised drag racing when the farmers/farmers sons would race their tractors and they were hotted up as you do and the real hot ones upon launching would dig trenches hence the term diggers. When the drags started some of the higly moddified "tractors"showed up extended chassis little front wheel big back wheels driver sitting over or behind the rear axle, and the term digger was used before the term dragster and the hard core guys would still refer to them as diggers, still the same today!Any other motorsport question kids!
FROSTY ·
Stanley you have to go the Otto Brothers style altered. Just for interest what would the pipe OD and wall thickness be for the frame?
Stanley ·
yeh the Otto Bros car is pretty cool although a bit short in the wheel base for my liking. i think it would be a handful.
Anybody know where the Otto bros are from? I think it might be Belgium? I'll be passing through there in a few months.
Also Sue was having a Christmas clean out during the many rain periods and found some old lost VW mags. I have one from around '95 that shows a blue dragster with ping bar work called "FOUR RUNNER" running at the VW nationals at Oran park. Anyone know who it belonged to? I'll try and scan the pic.
keep the pics and info coming
dangerous ·
Hey dude,
that dragster was a motor bike engine.
Stanley ·
Pic was that small and was from the front so I couldn't tell
And yes... They are from Belguim... Nice chaps so I have been told....
type3vw ·
there was a vw engine dragster back in late 70s called
YO YO i have some pics somewhere, ill see if i can find them.

type3vw wrote:there was a vw engine dragster back in late 70s called

That would be Earl Krygger's old car.... He built that right after he retired the supercharged gasser Oval he used to run... Don't have a lot of data on the rail though... You got any info?
pete wood ·
what would work better? a rear engined VW trans car (ala Ottos and early Berg's), a mid engined VW trans car, or a front engined car (presuming you'd need a different trans/diff in the latter case)?
SuperOwen ·
If naturally aspirated rear engine, type 1 trans and make it super light and simple. good cheap setup for warwick etc. Not so great if your aiming to set records though.
On a slightly different tack - otto brothers style dragster running mid engine ej20t and subaru auto? could be cheap and different.......
FROSTY ·
Hey Stanley, Have you made you your mind yet???? I got the rule book from Dave and I going to price up the steel, (just wondering what it would cost).
Stanley ·
I'm keen on a dragster but want to concentrate on current car at the moment plus I haven't got the room until I get rid of my white beetle.
coletrickle ·
Frosty the steel will be at my brothers house at brownsplains by the weekend!Call me
coletrickle ·
Also may have a vw short motor that came out of an old topfuel motorcycle i've done a little investigating and it looks like it might be from the Thornley? brothers. If the old bloke can find it it's mine for free.
I chatted to a couple of guys that had a altered ( 4 cyl) 160inch machine at the TNT last night and one of the guys use to run solid rear with a 1800 kombi box back in the Surfers Days.... I had a good look over their car ( can you call them a car) and didn't realise how uncomplicated they can be. Check out the photo of its front end. Hey Stanley you were right on with a short wheel base, these guys said that anything no matter how much power under 160inch would be very difficult to drive...
Stanley ·
Man that is simple. Not even the usual torsion set up. I guess when you think about it there is bugger all load on the front.
As long as you can keep the front wheels on the ground...
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
that pic looks like the rack and peanut set up that Troy is going to use on the tube car.
typethreeking ·
i think the one i will be using is alittle bigger than that one
SuperOwen ·
The other common setup for FED's is an anglia steering box or similar mounted up near the driver, with a push pull type steering linkage that runs up to the front on the side of the car. Sounds a bit rustic but works fine. And who needs a long wheelbase, not these guys.....
FROSTY ·
Yep there were two there with the "anglia steering box or similar mounted up near the driver" which were also very simple.
Dak-A-Tak ·
Lots to look at here , have been Google around sites , there are a couple rear engine vw rails for sale ( G/dragsters best)
The G on the Samba looks the goods. Couldn't build it for that 🙄
pete wood ·
what about Clyde Berg's rail there? that looks good. Just wondering, why did that put that spacer between the engine and trans?
Sides ·
I was wondering the same thing... best I could guess is that it's so the heads clear the rubber !!!
dangerous ·
...also to reduce the wheel stands...moves the weight forward.
FROSTY ·
Hi There,
I have decided to start a dragster and it has taken quite a lot of time to decide what set up to go with, it will need a tech inspection and I’m working from the ANDRA rule book . I’m hoping to have it going for Warwick. Its going to be 170 inch running an irs rear engine with a solid single beam front end, I’m working on the main frame at the moment with some of details still to be made eg, how far forward to sit….
I have taken a few pics….. my wife and kids are going away for 10 days ( school holidays) so the neighbours will hate the noise….YEW!!!
dangerous ·
Good work frosty!
If you want to narrow the rear a bit you can use auto LHS axles and pick up an inch per side.
Make the cut between the centre splines and the pivit box.
170" is pretty long, but it should work awesome!
Stanley ·
judas priest Frosty....I go away for a month and you steal my idea...no wonder I didn't see ya at daves on friday
good onya mate....ready for Warwick to boot....👍
vassy66T1 ·
Very cool Frosty ... ice cool 😎
He needs competitors Stanley ... come on 😁
Stanley ·
I'll just be happy to have mine ready for Warwick.
Might have to look at an altered instead
dangerous ·
Stanley wrote:...no wonder I didn't see ya at daves on friday
He was late, he turned up Monday at about 8 am !😂
FROSTY ·
I'm not totally sure about the length it will be anywhere between 160 and 180, i'll do the front end first and then just lop it off. I started mocking up the roll over bars and Dave you were right if they arn't done right it will look terrible.
Stanley I will to the trial and error....
Pretty happy with the welds too no need for the grinder.....(so far)
humpty ·
Love your chassis jig Frosty!!!!!
But seriously.... Awesome news.... Looking forward to 'hearing' (about) it running... Whats the plan for the driveline?
oldskl60 ·
Go mate! No messing around straight into it...
FROSTY ·
Driveline will be pretty basic, stock type3 irs box with disc brakes, i will drop my 1776 into is and here's hoping for 13's
Stanley ·
4.36pm....get off the frickin' internet Frosty and get into the shed.
dragvw2180 ·
My partner and I have owned two dragsters, one still holds the 1/8th mile record last time I checked. A word of advice, never buy a drag car you can't sit in before you buy it. The cost of modifiying a chromemolly chassis gets crazy quickly. The other dragster I owned was in one of the ads Dave posted. I bought it as an unfinished project and thought I could MAKE it fit my 6'1" body , bad mistake. I traded it for another car that I raced and which I am now turning into a street car. Last time I talked to the owner of that dragster he was going to sell the live axle, the trans extension and extended input shaft for the trans. As you guys stated the extension is used to push the engine forward to give clearance between the tires and cylinder heads, added benifit was exactly as you said , to put a little more weight forward. If you have any horsepower I would make it more than 180 inches, ours would pull the front end off the ground ( 2275 n/a) , pretty hard on a chassis with no suspension. Mike

Some more progress today with the box and engine in, need to make some new mounts for the shockies and bump stops.
dangerous ·
That's looking great Frosty!!
Stanley ·

humpty ·
Looking fine there Frosty..... Question #2: Is that ali plate sandwiched between the bellhousing and crankcase?
FROSTY ·
Hey Humpty it is 5mm steel plate (took a long time to cut out too)
I had some good progress today, shock mounts, all the uprights and the plates that will hold the front end.
This week i will ge all the diagonals done and start the rollover bars (all going well)
Time for a beer
FROSTY ·
No work on it today but my dad called me to say he found a steering wheel.... ( i thought whats this going to be...???) so i dropped in and picked up an old go kart wheel. Sweet..thats one less thing to find.

FROSTY ·
Hey Risky, nah i didn't work in the Uralla pub...
Ah you spotted that it was upside down, i thought that i had got'n away with it. I just made a mistake after cutting the shock towers off. I have been over it quite a few times and as long as the pivot box/pins are horizontal it works ok.
Thanks

To correct the rear camber after lowering...???
And no you wouldn't do that with your bug.... If your converting to IRS and/or lowering to the extreme, you'll need to flip the trailing arms from side to side and relocate the lower shock mount to suit.
Good stuff Frosty.... Keep at it!

Bull by the horns there ! Good to see you having a go ! Just think you should look at getting head cage made by a pro , lots of good campanys around , you can even can by the head cage as a bent welded kit .No welded joins on down legs . ( weldwell engineering , andrews race cars , ken lowe , s & l race fabication ,Thunder road ) . Have a look in ANDRA rule book too.
Peter

A little more done.... Now its starting to get frustrating, notching out all the pipes for cross bracing.
Should have the front end finished tomorrow, DB machined up some plate for the stubs to pivot on, now just need to weld them up and then weld them to the front end.
vassy66T1 ·
Should be easy to get in and out of hey? 🙅
I love altered/dragsters but think I would need and ambulance to extract me when the spasms in my back wouldn't stop.
Really looking forward to this Frosty ... keep it up.
humpty ·
That 'cross bar' immediately in front of the headbar loops looks to be very close to the driving pos.... Does it need to be that close?.... I mean, once the steering goes in, it looks like it's gonna be a tight fit to get in and out of the car.....
FROSTY ·
Yep spot on, I can just get into it now so it will move forward about 300mm.

Hah cool, had a couple of changes, from a little advice from you know who. I decide to turn the front stubs up the right way as the geometry could have had an issue at speed ( shopping trolley wheels... well kind of) the clutch and accel tubes are in and an adjustable bump stop on the rear suspension. I have hit a wall and just waiting for the Tax cheque to come in the mail. Then its all go again. I have ordered a steering rack, spindle mount front wheels and a few other things from the states too.
