Rev Limiter

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Does anyone have them on their bugs, like race bugs street bugs or daily drivers or do they evn exist?

beetleboyjeff ·

I ussed to have a rev limiting rotor button on my L bug with a 1916. It limited it to 5800 I think. I don't thing it really made any difference, I never seemed to rev it that high.

Joel ·

u dont need a rev limiter, thats what points and valve bounce are for 😂

colonel mustard ·

if you need a rev limiter and its a standard engine, your pushing it too hard.

jsheppard64 ·

ooo .ooo This is cool.
I only discovered it last week.
I found a rotor button out of an Alfa Romeo which has centrifugal rev limiter. slips right on the 009
standardly it rev limit at 6300 but i add a lump of solder on the moving centrifugal bit. so it went down to 4800
filed a bit of solder off now rev limit at 5200.

although it only rev limit at that rev under load. and i never reached 5200 ever again because i wuss out at 5000 lol
also i ran out of torque and power rofl

Also an alfa romeo dizzy fits on a beetle. although it sits a bit higher
and i managed to find another 6600 rotor button out of a bmw at a wrecker
it's sort of cheaper to try it out this way.

it was a major discovery for me but i'm sure someone, lots of folks know it before i did

........but they are great protection from over reving from a missed shift or jammed throttle on any engine....

they are made for VW with many different rpm limits from 4200rpm and up.......

68AutoBug ·

They do exist and are used...

on drag or race cars ...

You don't need them with a single port engine , which I have
as the limited breathing stops over revving although I never go over 4200 rpm and i have a tacho..

Not Sure I can go 4200rpm in top gear... lol

maybe with 14 inch wheels ..😂

LEE😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

just cos they rev that high doesnt mean its good for them
anything over 4500 with a stock unbalance bottom end is only shaving years off an engines life span

when they were new and everything was in spec theyd hoot down the freeway all day long at 4500 quite happily

i wouldnt try it with todays shitty fuels though 😂

BrisDubba ·

I have one on my clubcar, and I installed it for the very purpose that Hellbugged stated, in case of missing a gear in the sprints, not usually a problem on the track, but in the street sprints things get pushed a bit harder. Well worth the $50 or so bucks. I think mine is the 5800 version.

Yes. Omex Clubman.
Soft cut.

Sides ·

I run a Mallory Hyfire VI in Jezebel, which has two programmable rev limiters in it - both hard cuts.

Currently have the main limiter set to 7200 rpm, and the aux set to 4500 rpm for launches.

Works a treat, and yep - I've hit the main one a couple of times on muffed shifts - the exact situation hellbugged and BrisDubba have suggested.

BiX ·

I have a rotor button one, was a 7,200 rpm but have shaved it and now kicks in about 7,400rpm. Hit a few times when i missed a gear and once or twice in a corner.....

They don't though stop over revs on downshifts..... 🙂

hey sides, where did you get the mallory from.... can you give more details..? 🙂

Sure thing colonel - just got mine off ebay - new-in-box and a pretty good price.

It's a CDI box, roughly equivalent to an MSD 6, but with digitial controls rather than the analog. It was flip-a-coin for me to go Mallory or MSD, and like I said I found a Mallory at a good price.

The instructions and specs are up on the Mallory site ...click here... and you can by them from CenturyPerformance in the US ...click here...

There's a later Hyfire VII out now too, but don't know anything really about that one.

thanks Champ 🙂
