36hp Vintage speed motors--who's running what--

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/80668/36hp-vintage-speed-motors-whos-running-what

boonies 路

Been doing some research on old speed kits from down under and noticed that a few guys are going to run on the salts as part of the 36hp challenge. And this has got me curious on what you guys are running for vintage speed 36hp motors? Okrasa dual port kit?? A Judson or Pepco super charger?? Or do you have something rare, special or a one off job?

--So if you are into hoping up the 36hp motor and got the time post up a picture with a few words feel free.-- 馃槑

Hope to hear from ya'

okrasa and judsons and twin carbie kits

HappyDaze 路

Another name to drop - Denzel

Cheers, Greg

boonies 路

Any pictures of these motors?

--VW54--what is the dual carbi kit? Deitz, express??

--HappyDaze-- Which version of the Denzel kit are you running?

These Ozzys sound cagey......

Hi Boonies, think you need to show us some better pics of some 36er goodies first. Those first pics you posted were way toooooo crusty馃槀

boonies 路

Sure thing there boss, as soon as i get done refurbishing the Monaro 36hp kit ill post up some pics. For now I'm a bit busy tracking down some parts for a set of 356 A brakes for a german gent.

Maybe ill post a pic of them to if i get the chance.

P.S. the carb remanufacturer said that they were the worst one he had seen, like the stored under water.馃槀

Running a judson (purchased from George Folchi) in my '60.... haven't had a huge amount of time to play with it as its been in and out of the shop but am very happy with the old 36er now 馃檪

Thats a nice pic of my twin carb 36hp

boonies 路

Yep, that kind of picture is what I was looking for. Which dual 28 pci kit would that be?

vw54 路

Okrasa

boonies 路

vw54 wrote:Okrasa
In the picture?? Doubt it is Okrasa, wrong linkage, carbs, and filters for that kit.

Or were you referring to something else?

HappyDaze 路

In the late '50s the Automotive Carburettor Co. did a twin SU kit for the 36 HP VW. They quoted 0 to 50 MPH in 14.2 secs. Price - (Pounds) 43 /12 /6. There's one for all you young-uns to ponder!

Cheers, Greg

vw54 路

yeah i see it now not Okrasa its a single inlet

rose 路

It is a good pic I was impressed.

I made custom manifolds for the 28pics, linkage and copper fuel & oil lines.

Are there any other twin carb 36hp running around?

Not sure about OZ but in the states and europa there are some dual carb 36ers.

Nice job on the work, looks really clean and the balance tube looks nice.
I was thinking of building a dual set up with 34PCI carbs and a 356 A fan shroud but have not taken the time. With the carburetors turned in the direction you have them it would easy for some one to run the new Wolfsburg West/CSP 36hp bell crank linkage!

thats from Boris Picnic Day

Antons car

I built a similiar setup, also with the carbs orientated that way, went on a '54 36er with polished rods & rockers in a 2 tone lowered blue and white 54 in Sydney. Built by Volksrestore in the early 90's.

Hi

Not quiet 36 hp, this is a Ken Virgin kit for a 1300/1500 and some random manifolds.

Steve

boonies 路

I remember seeing those over on the samba. Any pictures of them installed on an engine?

Oh back on topic, 36hp hopped up engines! 馃槈

1303Steve 路

Hi

I sold them on Ebay about a year ago, found them in a VW shop in South Australia in the 1980s.

Where's Big Dog Torrens?

hopefully in the new year... I was the ebay winner! Been on the back burner with other stuff happening but the ragtops carby started leaking the other day, so it's moved itself up the list!
Still need to find air filters, early dome type like in the other pic, or 356 mesh style, hmm..

boonies 路

Well sounds like they went to a good home.

Guess we will just have to wait for picture of that set up on a motor.

Who's next?

polak 路

anyone here running these in the stock or super stock classes on the salt flats? be keen to see how and what ppl are doing as im interested in getting into it..... also i dont think they run this class in australia but can anyone verify this? cheers adam

Pretty sure they are as I think there are a few cars planning to run next year. Steve Muller could shed some light if he sees this.

boonies 路

Ah 36hp challenge, I figured that a few hopped up 36ers would be running down under.

I have one of these kits in my collection, never set it up. one day I guess.

boonies 路

What else is out there in OZ as fars as hot 36hp motors.
Pictures man pictures! 馃槒

The CLA(there is 5 of us now) is slowly putting together the parts to build a still undecided salt flat racer our stash of parts is looking pretty good a heap of 36horse engines, old school ratio rockers,a couple of magnetos, bob hamilton nitrous kit and a 1950's mag supercharger with side draft 40mm weber.K and j motor machine are sponsoring us with all machine work head porting etc.We will probally be at the 2011 event as a couple of us are going to run a number of the nostalgia drag races bris, bernaraby, and sydney but I'll post some stuff down the track.

boonies 路

Though i would check in and see if there was anything new going on in the world of 36hp vintage speed.

Thanks!

I have one of these manifolds with a carby on it ???

Craig Torrens 路

here's my vintage speed 36hp in my 54 Oval......twin carbs, hot cam, big valves, ported, etc etc 馃槈.....even has an anti surge sump for 'vintage speed driving' !!

SPRINTSTAR 路

I have this complete Swiss made Mag Supercharger for my 56 Ghia lowlight project. This is an original one, apparently Almar from Belgium is going to have a complete repro available soon for US$6K complete if anyone's interested. I have seen the quality of the castings though..it screams repro..less than 20 original complete sets worldwide. Still got the Type4 Porsche fan shroud motor idea lurking around though馃槑

Never seen this anti surge sump as such. Do you have any other pictures of the unit?

Thanks!

boonies 路

Here are a few "finished" pictures of the Dual SU carburetors.

The kit has been installed on a stock 36hp motor that is currently living in our 61 bastard oval. There have been some modifications to the linkage and we had some custom air cleaners made up. Currently we are working on the fuel line and hope to fire up the motor sometime this weekend. Good luck!

boonies 路

We also purchased a lot of Modern Motor magazines and had them shipped to the USA in order to go through them and scan any interesting VW articles. 1/2 of the Dual SU carburetor article was posted on this forum but here it is complete.

You can read more over at The Old Speed Shack

I've got one on my 1300, it works a treat never seen the oil light come on in a fast bend or with the bum hanging out.馃憤

Uber Kafer 路

Hey Boonies... thats cool stuff. Twin SU Kit looks great, and the articles are an interesting read.
thanks.

HappyDaze 路

SU carbies are pretty good. Fitted a pair of 1 3/4" (about 44mm) to my 1961 Beetle - in 1961.

Once they are set up correctly, they work extremely well. The variable chokes - controlled by throttle position/manifold pressure, give close to the ideal choke size at all times. This was particularly handy in my case, as the car was my road car and race car all in one. It clocked 102 MPH at Bathurst, and returned around 30 MPG on the road.馃憤
