sorry people,
but it can always be taken back to stock..what ever that is?
well the ej22 and kit is here, just have to finish off a couple of things and i will take the old boy off the road.
stay tuned, and sorry joel in advance for all the pm's you are about to receive lol
ian.mezz ·
get the air/con installed as well and youll have one cool Kombi.
Joel ·
no pun intended 🙄
Sweet, you and ash will love it even more now
is it missing the powersteering/alt bracket or is just not on the engine?
i "might" still have the one off my old motor if you's need
kombibob ·
no its cool the bracket came in a box of spares.
thanks anyway
colonel mustard ·
plans on rad mounting position?? will sure make it nicer to drive 🙂 Good luck!
STIDUB ·
saw this at micks motors one time, if your going under body rad like customveedubs setup im curious how well it will work cos it was daaaammmmnnnn low when i saw it there, ps get 17" radars with the bolt circle painted black, would look F****** HOT!
kombibob ·
rad housing will be in the treasure chest.
cool air will come from the high roof vents and extra ducting, warm air will exit via a hole cut in the treasure chest floor.
i have a nice compact 4 core rad from a corvette that i hope will do the trick.
i will probably have to wind up the rear slightly even with the cvd sump but i hope to have no sign of a subi conversion from the outside.
warb ·
cept the sound tho...
kombibob ·
the ratteling of the drop gates should drown out the sound of the subi... lol
colonel mustard ·
Do people pay attention to the sound when they are near/following el concreto? I'd say that would be the last thing on my mind.
kombibob ·
i think they are more concerned something will fall off and hit them
warb ·
haha, keen to see where this heads tho..
colonel mustard ·
sorry for questioning you, alot - but is this a long term sort of process, and - do you aim (like joel did) to be able to swap over with very minimal work...
kombibob ·
i have every thing i need minus the short sump to do the job, and the best thing is so many people like joel have done the conversions now that most probs can be answered, so i'm hoping that once i start it wont take too long.
i just have to get the new mk2 gti on the road and put a motor back in the other split and i'm on to it.
and i guess i should start thinking about a disc brake conversion too hey?
kaiisons ·
How's this coming along?
Bizarre ·
kombibob wrote:and i guess i should start thing about a disc brake conversion too hey?
nnnaaaahhhh!
Waste of money
Narrow the beam more instead 😂
kombibob ·
kaiisons wrote:How's this coming along?
still waiting to get a weekend free to start 🙁
taking the old boy to dubs so will take him off the road and throw his motor in the other split next weekend.
kombibob ·
ok the old motor is out and back in the 'G' ready for her new owner.
so i started on the coversion this weekend, pulled off the sump to take to cvd for shortening and also sent off the flywheel and cluch for balancing/ machining.
one afternoon this week i will replace timming belt and water pump and next weekend i will do the first fit up.
h ·
coool
colonel mustard ·
Looking good.
Off road till finished then??
No more air cooled's...?
kombibob ·
ok finished all my other projects so it will be full steam ahead on this now.
did my first trial fit today and it slipped in nice with out any cutting, i will have to trim a little of the rear valance but thats ok its pretty well stuffed anyway. also decided on a rack and pinion convesion to go with the disck brake setup.
Smiley ·
I didn't know Subie engines came with a cat 😂
Smiley 🙂
kombibob ·
ha ha yep,
i was told to get it mod approved i had to fit a cat
Smiley ·
kombibob wrote:ha ha yep,

At least cause it's hairless it won't add much drag 😂
Smiley 🙂
chippy ·
is that a CAT-alytic converter ?? PMSL
cheers Todd 😀
kombibob ·
took today off work to start cutting!!
cut the opening in the floor and in the air channel, will have to seal off the air channel after the cut so air is directed through the radiator only.
now i have to make up a frame to hold the rad and enclose it with a opening door to service the fan.
i also trimmed up the rear valance.
vwsteve ·
is that a devon rex or a cornish rex?we had a few of them, they have good personalities, i prefer air cooled but each to their own😎
kombibob ·
hey steve,
she is a sphynx they also have great personalities, more like a dog than a cat.
yep i also prefer air cooled but cant afford the cash to build a 100hp+ aircooled motor.
cheers
bob
pete wood ·
not a high flow can then.... ha ha ha 😂
are you putting a gurney flap or similar under the car to draw the hot air out?
kombibob ·
no its a copper 4 core out of a corvette will give it a go with a flap under the front to help the venturi effect also have a couple of ides to catch some more air if needed.
fitted the rack and pinion steering today also mounted the 5 in 1 tacho, water temp gauge etc plus fan and engine check lights.
also fitted the short sump and detailed the engine ready to go back in.
does any one have any good pics of non reversed throttle body linkages as i have plenty of room so will try it stock.
cheers,
bob
kombibob ·
started on the exhaust today, i was going to get someone to make one up for me but after finding every thing i needed in our local steel bin i thought i may as well have a go.
the headers are made from the rear bumper ends off a tarago lol. im trying to make the exhaust hang no lower than the sump.
i think i will use the muffler off my old ss sidewinder and see how that goes.
also bolted up the engine again (hopfully the last time before start up) dropped it off the stands to check ground clearance, and it was not too bad :o
kombibob ·
almost finished the exhaust today, hangs a little lower than the sump but thats ok better draging the exhaust first anyway.will be wrapping it in header wrap to keep everything around it cool.
tomorrow i will finish the last bit off and fit the old muffler. will try and get away without fitting a cat as my engineer didnt check last time when he did my bay.
its a bit quiet at work atm so i will be taking a few days off to get stuck into this.
Joel ·
alot more professional than mine 👍
its gonna sound sweet with that setup
colonel mustard ·
Joel wrote:alot more professional than mine 👍

that scares me a little..... but just makes me want to do this to mine more.....
Grey 57 ·
That 5 in one guage is a cool thing.
kombibob ·
thanks guys,
muffler fitted now
happy with the way it turned out, with the bumper fitted it looks just like it did with the 1600 in it. now cant wait to hear what it sounds like.
hellbugged ·
Very nice job on the exhaust.......I wouldn't hold much hope for the muffler to keep it quiet for too long tho. I don't think those ones enjoy life with too much extra stress
kombibob ·
thanks damo,
i will see how it goes with this muffler and when it craps its self i will try something else.
not far off finishing this now.
i have made and fitted the rad housing with a 16" thermo fan, also done most of the wiring and some of the cooling pipe work.
stay tuned for start up! 😀
phatratpat ·
hurry up ! Nimbins next week.....or are you gunna roll in the fat lady ??😏
ian.mezz ·
???can you get to the radiator cap and do you have a bleeder pipe in top of the Radiator like the subaru has.
ps I like your work as I am not a fan of bling 🤪🤪
kombibob ·
yep i can get to the cap just! lol...and it will have a header tank in the highest part of the engine bay to help fill/bleed.
ian.mezz ·
with the radiator up that high it should be easy to bleed and you may not need a header tank.
kombibob ·
yep i am going to give it a go first as i don't have a header tank made up yet and if it works ok i will leave it at that.
also if it doesn't get enough air flow i will duct some from behind the drivers front wheel, but i hope i wont have to as i have even closed off the cab fresh air and opened up the inner roof behind it to steel that air as well as the usual high roof air flow to the rad.
i have also closed off the area behind the air channel above the rad. this also gives me a good place to run and hide my loom and other wiring.
h ·
can't beat 'bob a jobs' work
schweet
when start up happens record it n put it on mp3/4 or boob tube!!
kombibob ·
started the old boy up to day, it started straight away but sounded a bit rough so next weekend i will replace the spark plugs and give it a clean out with some subi foam.
i ran into a bit of trouble running the cooling pipes so i had to raise the fuel tank and run the hoses under it.
i had to mod the tank as a split tank has a non flexible filler neck, so i fitted a flexible filler off a navara that i found in the steel bin.
also used a bike brake cable to connect the old accelerator cable to the subi throttle .
so close now just need some time.
71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·
i have one of those 5 in one gauges,
very good and dint need to molest my dash to fit 5 gauges.
flat_iv ·
Nice work. Where did you get your muffler from? I am having trouble locating a muffler with the inlet and exit on the same side of the muffler. In the US that is....
h ·
'found in the steal bin' aarrrhhh that old chestnut 😂
nice work mate
kombibob ·
thanks paul,
i love my steel bin 😉
well this is how i over came the rad filling problem.
you just attach a funnel add 5ltrs of coolant, remove funnel attach garden hose with male fitting and fill untill coolant comes out rad cap.
ian.mezz ·
you should just fill it from the radiator😂😂
as it sounds like the radiator is the highest point.😂😊😊
kombibob ·
but it is a sh#t of a place to fill from, i can only just reach the cap.
ElusiveStranger ·
kombibob wrote:but it is a sh#t of a place to fill from, i can only just reach the cap.
Are you a dwarf?
Loving this build bud 🙂
colonel mustard ·
whats the deal with the hose you are filling from... maybe iv just missed something.
anyway, looking good man. is the water pipe insulation near the fuel tank just 2 layers of pvc?? or is there some other form of trickery in there?
kombibob ·
colonel mustard wrote:whats the deal with the hose you are filling from... maybe iv just missed something.

no just pvc for insulation, seems to work ok.
the hose is fitted to the coolent manifold with a high preasure female air fitting on the end so i can fill the rad from the engine, once filled (which worked great) you just remove the male end and tuck it away.
the rad cap is realy hard to get to as its on the far side of the rad in the treasure chest.
here is the link to my dodgy start up vid, it sounds so much better than on the vid though.
h ·
mate awesome work! great vid..
great techno thingy as when iwad a boy they had 8track n reel to reel n that was unreal.. haha
ian.mezz ·
just make a adaptor to fit on radiator filler cap and make it longer uno like that fancey hose on your fuel tank and put a fuel flap door in the floor of the ute tray and then add a small fitting to the top of the radiator and run that small hose from the motor to the top of te radiator and the air will bleed back to the top radiator tank.😊
uno what I am trying to explain😊😊
gaz58t2 ·
Hey Bob
Looks the goods.
Just wondering what what Alternator belt are you using
as i could not find one that fitted so i still have the power steering pulley on
Cheers Gaz
kombibob ·
Thanks guys
Gaz the belt to use is a 5pk0690.
Hey Ian, this set up seems to work fine for filling, took no time at all so i think i will just leave it as is.
cheers,
bob
gaz58t2 ·

kombibob ·
took the old boy for a few splats up the road today, i was really happy with the power and the new steering is unreal!!!
the only thing is that my 8year old second hand fuel pump that's been sitting in the bottom of a parts bin for years crapped itself SHOCK! about 20 mtrs from home.
so had to push the old boy home😊
looks like im off to repco tomorrow.
ian.mezz ·
just get a Holden vL commodore/camira pump about $90.
after you have had it going for a while,
You should put a can of subaru top end cleaning in the manifold it cleans all the crap out and makes it run smoother.
I put two cans in mine and now it feels like I have 20 more HP😂🤪😂
seagull ·
20 more Hp , wow basicly a what most vw motors have left in them these days
rocknrob ·
geez thats about as far off the road as you better go🙅 how do you get across the gutter to your driveway? still pretty cool just the same🙄 do you have a shortened sump?
kombibob ·
ha ha i have about the same clearence as before the swap.
just a quick vid.
and a quick tour
1303Steve ·
Hi
Its still sounds like a VW, only better.
Steve
Joel ·
Big ups Bob 👍
you've done an awesome job in such a quick time too.
guessing that speed sensor worked out for you?

Thanks Joel, your thread and answers to all my questions helped big time!
But i havent fitted the speed sensor yet, planning on fitting that on friday.😊
