Its only four weeks to the 2010 Speed Week event on the salt at Lake Gairdner,South Australia.
Ratmuller Racing has entered a 1956 Oval in the 36hp Challenge where vehicles are almost completely stock. The current record is a tad less than 74 mph.
See the vehicle in resto form at this link;
A Ghia Convertable has also been entered in a modified class and is currently under restoration as well

Well done Steve, looks like the Ratmuller racers are coming together. I love the flat painted beetle with the caged orange. Looks the biz....very cool.
Can't believe the lack of interest here, this event is practically made for dak daks.

I heard Steve was building a 36 stocker and a 36 stroker with 71mm Okrasa crank, but which in what car I have no idea.
cb john ·
Both in the same car...not in the same time of course...😂

Well we know he holds the record for engine swaps🙂🙂

I extracted the following from correspondence between Steve and Burly B, the US based king of the 36hp challenge.
"Steve is preparing two 36hp motors,,both will be fitted to the 56 oval........the ghia isn’t a 36er....but a 2.0 litre based 1600 for our class records over here.
The first 36er for the Oval is a standard stock motor and is being currently assembled .....the second 36er is a Okrasa spv 1300 .....................this Okrasa engine was built 10yrs ago and is being used as the stand in for a second class attempt.....
The really BIG 36er wont be ready in time....but you never know if the gods are shinning on me it just might........this BIG engine has a 76.4mm stroke by 78.5mm bore which gives us 1479cc Steve may choose to use an 83mm big bore kit the displacement will be 1607cc....great feat from using a 36 case....."

Thanks for setting us straight Bill. Shame the 'big' engine isn't making it.

Getting to big motor together is looking like it going to happen. Much midnight oil being burnt out at Annangrove at the moment.
The 36hp stocker is now complete and running in the Oval and the Okrasa is there as well.
Wanted to run an original Lukey 4 pipe exhaust but it was against regulations so now back to a bog standard 36hp muffler with flared tail pipes.
73.9 MILES PER HOUR IS the record to be achieved by the Old School oval stocker.

The Big ,Big motor is not going to happen. Steve has settled for 2180 cc with 82mm Okrasa crank, Porsche rods, Berg big value heads, 48 IDAs and deep sump. This motor is built, and running in the Ghia vert. It goes on the dyno Monday.
The end result is three engines, two cars and the ability to mix and match depending on which class is being attempted.
The 51 IDA's are still sitting on the bench looking for a mate which I am sure will not be very far away.
Both vehicles are almost finalised and both are getting finishing touches.
Departure date is next Friday 5th March with 1750kms to find the salt at Mt Gairdner
