Hi guys,

Got tha baja finished and found the 1600 kombi box has been flogged to death, I think the gearing might be a little short for me anyway so i'm thinking of using an 1800 kombi box instead. Question is, are the clutches the same size, I have a 200mm stage 1 kennedy clutch and and want to be able to use it and are the dimensions of the 1800 box the same as the 1600? ie, use the same kit to fit the 1800 box?

cheers
Mick.

The splines are the same size, from memory the 1800 mainshaft is longer as when we fit the 1800/2000 motors to the beetle box we have to extend the spigot shaft bearing.

The Type 4 engine (1700, 1800, 2000) uses a 215 mm clutch. The Type 1 is 200 mm, so there won't be any room issues using a Beetle clutch in a Kombi gearbox.

Not really relevant as the question has been answered whether the 1600 will fit but on a side note, 1600 uses a 200mm clutch and the type IV has a few variations ie, 1700 is 210mm, 1800 uses 215mm and 2000 uses a 228mm clutch which is the only one that needs the deeper 2.0 liter bell housing and starter motor..

So in short i can use the 200mm clutch with an 1800 kombi box? the and the type 1 flywheel is big enough for the 1800 box? 12v.

Yes, once you change the input shaft to a 1600 length from the longer type IV one.

right, cool. is that a big job? does it require dismantaling the gearbox at all?

Just the bell housing off. Easy, but need new gasket and oil.
