thanks dave got some good leads gunna use them on everything i can but primarily on the guards and body bolts.

why do u want Alloy
you would be better off with Stainless steel and SS washer in the guards
STIDUB ·
i think some people want an easy weight saving🙂
Sides ·
Interesting idea... curious to see how this one pans out...
donn ·
Aluminium and steel, corrosion problem?
vw54 ·
as for weight saving use shorter bolt and thinner washer
and dont eat that BIG MAC before a race LOL
matberry ·
Use Duralac on the threads and you won't have corrosion issues.
I think there is a big weight saving with all the body hardware.
Sides ·
Heh heh... it's all about that power to weight ratio hey !!!
I joined the gym at work... and although it ain't the easiest way, at $15 per month providing you actually use it has to be the cheapest way to reduce weight in the car... other than going for the swiss-cheese speed-hole look that is...

Sides , I wish I had your enthusiasm . I have spent over US$ 2000 on aluminium bolts , nuts and washers for my new drag car . I even went for the half nut option to save a bit more weight . Now I am drilling out the centre to save a few more grams . I have a packet of 5/16 bolts 1" long and 100 of these weigh 680 grams . Mac to answer your question , I couldn't buy metric bolts , so I now have imperial in 3 different sizes and 3 different lengths , ROD.
Sides ·
Heh heh - it's early days yet Rod, but so far so good.
yeh its all about the weight although i am no light weight at 115kgs a few ally bolts in me might make a difference as well!!!!!!!

Is this just a coincidence, noticed it at the bottom of this page.

danny_galaga wrote:So how much weight would you save using alloy bolts?
Sad the things I get up to sometimes... my excuse is that it's early in the morning and can't make noise out in the shed yet !!!
About the weight of a single Big Mac I think ????
😉
Obviously if you used them in more places the saving would be bigger... like body to pan bolts... but personally I'd rather use the stronger bolts there just in case...

...so I saved 304.5 grams by leaving out every second guard bolt!
...very affordable option!!
Sides ·
Hmmm... that gives me an idea DB... you could double drill the mounting holes, then ditch the guard bolts all together and use zip ties instead !!!
matberry ·
Hillbilly racer did it the real cheap way. Only 3 bolts per guard......
Those links are great, thanks Sides.......sexy IS exxy.

Hey no worries Matt.

So the difference is between drinking, or not drinking a can of coke before you race...
Hmmm... with roundy roundy racing most people get better times AFTER downing a can of coke... but don't go anywhere near red lollies... they make you crash !!!
😉
mactaylor ·
yeah every bit helps as any racer knows. DB so half as many ally bolts would be approx 450gram saving, when i find them ill send you a pack.

I thought there would be corrosion problems like donn mentioned, but it seems aluminium might even be better than galvanized steel if you check out this page, http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=98. This info does indicate that stainless steel is probably a bad choice if you ae concerned about corrosion.

Very interesting...
aluminium bolts are not very strong...
so, usually You would use a much larger sized bolt if You were making something.... lol
Now Titanium bolts are very light weight and very strong...
but Very expensive too....
I used zinc or cadmium plated Gr8.8 HT bolts on My guards...
along with never seize...
I also have used stainless steel bolts on My beetle too...

I have a few aluminium bolts that came with aluminium antennas and alloy antenna rotators..
but have never seen them for sale anywhere....
maybe next to the titanium bolts.... lol
I haven't seen them either ... but haven't really looked for them.

I did think of once , of using one dollar coins for mud guard washers .. lol
