Hi Guys
What are some nice tricks you guys do with the crank breather, any of you fitted a PCV and ran it into the aircleaner. Or do all of you just dump it out the bottom.

Breather box or catch can is the usual setup.

Breather box you have a box sitting above the engine, with the breather line and often another from each rocker cover going up to it. The box is open to the atmosphere (through a filter) so air can get out, and with some internal baffling makes it so the oil can't... and cos it's up high, any oil that ends up in there should just drain back down to the case once the engine has stopped breathing so hard.

The breather on Reub's 58 is one of the neatest setups I've seen... especially the "stealth black" plumbing he has : http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=62624&page=8

A catch can is same basic idea, but bigger capacity which and often doesn't sit as high so the oil can't drain back to the engine. It's more a race idea... to "catch" lots of oil from coming of the engine as the #1 priority... theory being the harder you fang the engine, the harder/more it breathes.

The biggest diff with a catch can is you usually have to periodically check it hasn't filled up, or worse "stolen" the oil from the sump.

Then there's the neatest of the neat... dry sump... but that's a whole nother story....

westi special?

yr gunna have Oil in it so u need to go to a box and allow it to drain back to sump

obiviously the bigger the pipe size is better to allow plenty of breathing and venting

I've never used a catch can etc...

but the engine has to breathe..
otherwise oil will come out the slinger or the dipstick hole....

never ever heard of anyone using a PCV system....??

I don't think it would work....

as it would look as a blockage and oil would come out past the oil slinger.... all over the engine bay.... lol

I just made up a little ghetto breather can from Supercheap bits and pieces. Its a little oil can squirter with a filter on to with a 1/2'' barb in the side. The bracket is a SC ''billet'' number and its screwed into one of the shroud holes for the generator back plate. Cost $15 minus the filter which I already had.
Looks pretty ghey dont it.

Thats nice,

I would route them shroud holes somewhere soon, i just had mine blocked off and the car was running bout 50 degrees hotter than with em fitted.

YES Well done

Looks great and does the job...

routing the hose into the air filter doesn't work too good as oil eventually comes out into the air cleaner...

Here's two versions of my old 2332 breather using the same parts, just relocated when I fitted the decklid spring. Generally 3 x 1/2" hoses or more are required, one from the og oil filler and each tappet cover is the norm. Bigger hose is about getting the air speed down which allows the oil fall from suspension. The other important thing to watch is no dips in the hose which fill with oil and stop that hose breathing. As for the box, you can make it from aluminium, steel or even PVC will be ok albeit a little ugly/'bunnings speed shop' looking. The easiest wat and I feel one of the worst as they leak, hold oil and the filter is crap, but it's readily available at most vw shops, a breather kit with al box and clear non reinforced pvc hose which kinks as soon as it gets warm.

It does not look like it in the pics but the holes in the shroud for the heaterbox flex hose are blocked off.
