You may have seen me posting WTB a 67 bug then I went to a 70 bug. Yesterday I picked up a 69 bug that i found on carsales.com.au.
The car is fairly original and clean although it does have upgraded type 3 brakes with discs on the front, a 1600 twin port motor, EMPI shifter and new shocks.
The car also has Ford telstar bucket seats in the front.
I plan to keep it fairly stock looking except a new set of wheels most likely EMPI 8 spokes Falken 195 tyres, lowered front suspension and a whole new interior.
Today I gave it a good clean and tinkered here (First thing to go was the demister on the back window) and there, next weekend will see a polish and waxing
Tomorrow the car is off to Adam at Raw Auto Works for an assessment, tune up and some minor works so I can register it ASAP.
Long term plans are for a respray in the same colour and some work to the motor as well as new rubbers and a few accessories. I already have an order ready to go at classic VW.
Here are some photos

Pumba ·
Looks very nice well done, but please get some original front seats back in there😁 cheers shane.
Paulc1964au ·
Thanks lol well at this stage the seats will stay and most likely recovered to a red vinyl but will keep your request in mind 🙂
t1 time ·
cool, and the empis will look great
Paulc1964au ·
thanks yes just have to source a set of 8 spokes
Paulc1964au ·
Today I took my dub to Raw Auto Werks for servicing and a few fixes so it can be registered.
Adam and Mick did a fantastic job and went over my 69 and kept working until 8.30 pm tonight. If anyone lives in Sydney i highly recommend there work and both are great guys.
As for what they charged me I am so happy with the cost and the workmanship. I will be returning the 69 in the near future for a new front beam, rust repairs to the doors as well as a few other things.
thanks guys one very satisfied customer
Paulc1964au ·
Today I polished and waxed and installed the aussieveedubbers.com sticker
Scarab ·
congrats on the new car....
and its great to hear of the great service provided by a company like Raw....you often dont hear about good service like that! Well done Adam and Mick!!
by the way, your bug looks great after the polish and wax....I'll bet your arms are hurting now!! 😂
Scarab (aka: Paul)
Paulc1964au ·
thanks Paul yes Adam and Mick did a fantastic job and the car will go back to them for some drop spindles and some minor rust work in a few months.
And i'll tell you how my arms feel in the morning lol
Paulc1964au ·
took the wife out for a drive today and she was quite impressed on how well Rosie drove and handled. We did around 60 km's today and she didn't miss a beat (the car that is).
I dropped into Super Cheap and bought a replacement aerial and some new wipers, been a great weekend and lots of improvements to the car.
ryana89 ·
Good on ya mate👍
Scored quite nice deal there, do you own any other VW's?
Hope everything goes well and I'll be watching this thread😀
Ryan
Paulc1964au ·
Thanks Ryan yes I'm happy with my new baby (Rosie)
This is my second Beetle my first was 30 years ago when I bought my first car which was a 67 model.
Yesterday I was the guy in the super cheap auto advertisement that comes home with a car full lol except i left the new sound system behind until i pay it off.
Next to occur is a new set of wheels and tyres then lowered front end. hopefully soon after a new interior then that it for a while
Finky ·
Thats a grate looking car! I love the old radio, But I also dont like the seats very much. It needs a stock interior.
Paulc1964au ·
Finky wrote:Thats a grate looking car! I love the old radio, But I also dont like the seats very much. It needs a stock interior.
Thanks Finky the seats will stay but will be recovered when i get the whole interior done later in the year. My first priority is a new set of wheels and the front end lowered, then a new sound system then carpet and new vinyl through out
Paulc1964au ·
Today I picked up my new plates, have changed the rego around just for a little security measure
ryana89 ·
I think I'm usually more partial to the look of Supers, but your bug (Rosie?) is just so pretty and clean!
Many people second look a beetle, but I'm sure I and most other people could stare at your bug all day👍
Cheers
Paulc1964au ·
thanks Ryan, she is coming along nicely considering i have only had her 4 weeks. I am really impatient for the wheels and tyres but have to wait until July which will give me time to see my options for tyres at the Nationals next month.
I am also starting to wonder if i should get some different bars. I do like the clean look though.
Drove the car to pick up my new plates then do a little shopping, had a women next to me in the car park comment on how nice Rosie is lol. Came back told my wife i had a chick magnet only problem is the chick was about 60 lol

Car is looking good and the women love it. What more can you ask for (dont answer that ;-)
I have had my car for over 2 years and I still have never driven a VW Beetle on the street. Only drove mine around a car park when I first got it. Am I in for a big shock ❓❓❓❓❓
Keep the updates coming as you progress.

Kev,
I gotta tell you my other car is a 2008 Commodore SV6 and I find the beetle more fun to drive and it seems to handle as good as the commodore lol maybe i'm being biased but it certainly can navigate roundabouts better.
I'm sure once I put wider wheels on the car and lower the front that it will improve further
Paulc1964au ·
Bonnet hinge and bracket repaired and rear axle seals replaced. All going well sound system in June and new wheels and tyres in July.
cam070 ·
Nice clean car, but is it my imagination, or did the rear demister disappear?
Paulc1964au ·
cam070 wrote:Nice clean car, but is it my imagination, or did the rear demister disappear?
Yes it was disconnected when i bought the car so i removed it
XXX-1.8T ·
Looks great 🙂
Maybe get some thin white walls or red walls to compliment the tyres like they did in the late 60's 😉
Keep up the good work but +1 on changing the front seats

Thanks for the complimenti am enjoying the car as for the saets they are here to stay but will be reupholstered
mickey_0789 ·
Hey man I didn't realise how beautiful Rosie is!
As I mentioned about the cd player in the dash, don't ruin her, put it in the glove box.
Hopefully our beetles get to ride next to each other one day.
Keep up the top work mate.
Paulc1964au ·
Thanks Mickey yes Rosie is pretty special. Hopefully over the weekend I will look for somewhere else to install the head unit maybe even under the dash or in the glove box
Paulc1964au ·
Installed the new sound system today i am really pleased with it. first song of course was "Whole lotta Rosie" ACDC
Paulc1964au ·
Had a quote for a new interior today was a little surprised at the price quoted
1. Fully trimmed carpet and mats = $700
2. front buckets and rear seats reupholstered in vinyl with two colours and the plastic surrounds colour matched = $2300
3. Read deck and side panels = $1000
Total cost $4000 and an additional $1000 for leather
At his stage i am thinking to go with the floor and seats and try and squeeze in the rear deck for $3000.
I only really need to replace the right hand side drivers door side panel so hope to pick up an original.
what do you guys think?
Nikos ·
Sounds v.pricey.
Just picked up a new Kluger for the wife and had the dealer fit aftermarket leather for $2500. This includes door trims and all 7 seats.
This was negotiated after the deal on the car was allready done. Best price I was quoted from an upholsterer was $2700.
Nick
Mick058 ·
doesn't sound that far off - i paid $1200 just for the length of leather for my car. Though, i must say, if i had my time again i would probably use the budget on other stuff...Make sure you priorities and do the 'pretty' things at the very very end - too many things get wrecked otherwise.
But, $4000 for full trim to me sounds about right. IF its all custom.
Paulc1964au ·
Thankd guys ,
I was hoping to pay around $2K but i guess i was being a little optomistic. I will get a few more quotes before decidingwho to go with.
It was a totally custom fit out including recolouring thevinyl surrounds on the telstar seats and full custom carpet with matching mats.
The rear seat would be red with a bone strip in the centre. The front seats would be red with bone inserts and a vw emblem on the bone section at the top
I am hoping to get some good ideas at this weekends Nationals
AUSSIE_MICK ·
Hi guys
4k to 5k is about right. I recently had my Oval done 2 front seats and 4 panels in leather, vinyl hood lining and carpets.
Paulc; Anthony at Ingleburn does a great job, my car will be a first timer at the Nats (dark blue Oval)
See Ya
Paulc1964au ·
Cool I'll be sure to drop by and take a look and some photos
Paulc1964au ·
Can someone tell me if my 69 is known as a 1302? is it also the first of the super bugs?
71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·
nope, its not. Needs strut front end to be a 13 anything
Joel ·
Paul it will just be known on the books as a 1500 beetle
the 1302/3 designation was never used in Aus but thats a 70s superbug thing anyway
also not to be confused with the 1300 pov spec 70s bugs
ian.mezz ·
I would get new front seats those ford ones look to big.😊😊😊, I wouldn't use leather, I would just use a trim fabric like in the newer cars as its easy to keep clean and they look good.
Paulc1964au ·
oh ok thanks the reason why i asked is because I was watching Beetle Crisis and the guys are doing up a 1302 71 model and the comments from some of the restorers was a 1302 wasn't a popular beetle and was a waste to restore.
I know the pre 67 are the more sort after but thought my 69 was still worth spending some money on lol
Paulc1964au ·
ian.mezz wrote:I would get new front seats those ford ones look to big.😊😊😊, I wouldn't use leather, I would just use a trim fabric like in the newer cars as its easy to keep clean and they look good.
I have removed the head rests on the seats and they do look much better
Chappo ·
Go the leather Paulc if you can stretch the wallet that far. I have found leather to be way easier to clean and keep looking good. Just need to be diligent with leather conditioner every few washes.
I am planning on bright white leather for the interior of mine but I am sure I am having a little mental breakdown 🤪 with that one.
BTW I like the seats without the headrests big improvement.
Paulc1964au ·
Thanks Trent, took rosie for a spin today and literally did in the rain lol I am not driving her far until i get better wheels and tyres. I have ordered wheels from Rod Penrose who is in America as we speak . All going well the wheels will be here in 6 weeks.
At last weeks Nationals my wife and I had a good look at interiors and the leather look vinyl actually looked good.
The blacks seats are the style I want, these are the same seats as mine, and the light grey, cream is the colour we will do the seats and side panels
Chappo ·
Now that's nice. Hmmmm? I might have to change my mind on colour now 😂
Paulc1964au ·
Hope to have the interior done around Sept
zayus ·
I know the pre 67 are the more sort after but thought my 69 was still worth spending some money on lol
Paul,
Pre - 67 may be the most sort after, but the 1968 - 1970 1500, was the best Beetle ever made.
Paulc1964au ·
thanks yes i have heard that comment before actually
BlueLoo ·
If all goes to plan I pick my 71 1302 next week. I like what you have done with mounting your front speakers. Are those housings easily gettable?
Paulc1964au ·
BlueLoo wrote:If all goes to plan I pick my 71 1302 next week. I like what you have done with mounting your front speakers. Are those housings easily gettable?
Yes you can purchase the pair for $40 from Classic Vee dub be sure to use sound proofing behind them I have a thread running about mounting the head unit in the car and some of the guys suggested i sound proof them and it made the world of difference
Paulc1964au ·
BlueLoo wrote:If all goes to plan I pick my 71 1302 next week. I like what you have done with mounting your front speakers. Are those housings easily gettable?
Thanks. By sound proofing do you mean jamming some fibre glass insulation behind them?
Paulc1964au ·
BlueLoo wrote:Thanks. By sound proofing do you mean jamming some fibre glass insulation behind them?
I bought some soundproofing material from autobahn. It is a rubber compound that is self adhesive. It isnt cheap though I paid $40 and mounted it on the side kick panels and in behind the speakers and the inserts
Paulc1964au ·
Installed new door rubbers in rosie today. I bought these from classic Veedub and they are the German rubbers so paid a little more but they fit so well.

AUSSIE_MICK ·
OK, you will have to have her lowered ASAP!
Paulc1964au ·
Had the wheels and tyres fitted today they look awesome. I am glad with the tyre selection and sizes, the only issue I have is the rear right suspension has sagged and is only just clear of the tyre. Rosie will be going to RAW this week for the drop spindles and have the rear suspension adjusted.
benjicon ·
Looks nice man. I've never seen tires so shiny before !! 🙂
Are you going to lower her at all ?
Paulc1964au ·
benjicon wrote:Looks nice man. I've never seen tires so shiny before !! 🙂

Lowering the front by 2 inches and slightly lifting the right drivers side which has sagged

Here is Rosie with her new stance. i'm so pleased with how she looks thanks to Adam and Mick from RAW they did a first class job with her.
While Adam had the front end apart he found some issues with the fron ball joints and rear shocks, so Adam called em and we decided to renew those as well while the front was stripped for the drop spindles. Taking her back next week for some front shocks as they are also leaking.
All in all the guys worked on her all day and she is looking so much cooler, here are a couple of photos.
Next big job is a new interior, she will be going to Rod Penrose in a few months time
polak ·
Rosie looks HOT Paul, but i guess my opinion is possibly bias hehehe keep up the good work, cant wait to see her with the new interior!!!!! great to see you again, cheers adam
Paulc1964au ·
Did a couple of light night shots
Paulc1964au ·
Has 3 adults and two kids in rosie today and she scrubbed out pretty bad, she does need new front shocks which i am getting gas shocks installed this week but I have a feeling that when I had the wheel alignment done last week they adjusted the camber the wrong way.
When she goes to RAW this week I'll get Adam to take a look otherwise I guess its a narrowed beam I need.
ian.mezz ·
yeah thats the trouble with lowering cars.🥲
oh beetles are only 4 seaters🙅🙅
benjicon ·
Narrow all the way dude !!! Tuck that rubber under the guards. 🙂
Rosie is lookin better by the day, great stuff man.
Paulc1964au ·
Well front shocks install yesterday and wheels aligned
Barnabie ·
Looking really great now - especially with those rims, nice choice. Rosie is really coming along 👍
My 1971 1300 is heading to the guys at RAW next weekend (providing necessary parts have arrived) for an adjustable slightly narrowed front beam, dropped spindles and of course some necessary adjustment to the rear too. I can't wait!!
Sourced a spare set of 4 bolt steel rims (don't want to molest the originals in case I want to swap everything back at a later stage) which are will go in for powdercoating before being fitted with new (narrower) rubber and some other bits and pieces.
Glad you put me onto RAW (thanks) - spoke with Adam on the phone and he could not have been more helpful. 👍
Now, if only next weekend would come already 😁
Paulc1964au ·
I cant speak high enough for both Adam and Mick they treat the cars like there own and are really reasonable in their charges.
Rosie will be going back for some rear bushes in the near future.
Paulc1964au ·
Had a great weekend cruisin with rosie, was such fantastic weather to wind down the windows and drive around the place. I think this is what it is all about, enjoying driving and seeing how people react to seeing her.

too be totally honest before Rosie came along the commodore was my pride and joy but these days I much prefer to drive rosie, actually she handles roundabouts better as well 🙂

Today I installed a Ipod base to the ashtray, it works really well, saw this on another thread here. I screwed the base to the ashtray and the ipod touch fits snugly in front of the head unit
I bought the base and cable (which ended up being defective) off ebay for $3 so beggars cant be choosy lol

hey Paul,
Loving checking all the bits and pieces you're up to with Rosie.
Im currently doing my bonnet interior, would u mind posting some pics if you have carpetted/customised the interior at all//
Paulc1964au ·
Your ahead of me havent had the interior done yet hoping to later this year all going well
Paulc1964au ·
I have been putting off redoing the interior because I have been in two minds on the colour. I originally was going to stick with red however I have always liked blue. I will probably go with a good quality vinyl although leather isnt out of the question.
Don't worry too much of the style but which colour do you like?
DieSchnelleKafer ·
i think blue would look nice in your rosie, red seams to over power when you have a white car
Paulc1964au ·
Thanks for your opinion I am liking the blue more and more

Well red would match your number plate and your car is called Rosie. You might have to renamed her gluey if you install a blue interior.😂

Have you considered grey???
Also, be careful using armourall the drying agent in the product can be really destructive to plastics and some rubbers. You dont want to prematurely age those rubbers. Just my 2 cents, i now use a turtle tyre shine spray from big w its more oil based.
Paulc1964au ·
I think grey would be a little to light for the car and I do want it to stand out.
Thanks for the type on the rubbers

Paulc1964au ·
Will definitely go with the blue and a similar style to this
Paulc1964au ·
Today Rosie passed rego inspection in flying colours so next is the new upholstery hopefully in July and also looking to get a sidewinder exhaust thanks to Mick who has suggested it would sound much better and if it sounds better it has to go faster right??????
here is the style of seating I have decided on and the seats are identical to mine
And the colour will be blue

April - Narrowed Beam

June - New interior
October - sidewinder exhaust

Adam and Mick of RAW did a fantastic job installing the narrowed adjustable beam that i purchased from vollks.com.au

Special Air Service ·
how much narrower Paul ? has it solved your clearnce problems? OR did you just sneak it down lower & end up with similar issues anyway?😎
Paulc1964au ·
I havent picked her up yet but according to Adam i wont have any issues with rubbing, yes the beam is two inches narrow
polak ·
hello guys and gals in VW land, Paul just came around and picked up his little beast :P she has a tough new stance with just enough rake. After modifying the beam for right hand drive and shortening his existing steering arms and spring packs, we decided to drop the nose a little more just to give Rosie a tougher look.... really happy with how she looks and has cleared up the scrubbing issue she had before (exaggerated by the extra 12mm u get with drop spindles, the offset of the empi 8-spoke wheels and the 185 tires.) I needed to reduce the lock on the steering a little just to make sure it would all clear with the new height, but once Paul gets a set of narrower tires on the front, it will toughen up the look even more and then we will be able to increase the steering lock back out. In the mean-time Paul needs to get used to the lower nose and reduced lock... hehehe Cant wait to see her with the pop-outs and new interior. Rosie is a real neat little bug and im proud to have her and Paul a part of the RAW family. Cheers Adam

Looks great, stance is nice and tough but not overdone. When does it get a motor to match the new tough look?😂

Well the 1600 twin port seems to be very reliable so i am in two minds to modify it or eventually have a new motor built

Went and saw my good friend Rod Penrose last Sunday and selected all the upholstery for the car.
Hopefully Rosie will go down next month and Rod will do the carpet, seats, roof lining, front bonnet area.
It was great to have someone who knows Vw's and he had a great range of colours etc on hand for me to look at, not too mention all the other goodies he has there.
I was also able to secure a set of bars that i have been looking for as well.
Paulc1964au ·
not sure who owns this car but i would like to thank them for the inspiration, it is this car that i saw and loved and I am sure you can see similarities

You have a very sweet looking bug and you must be very proud. Well done.
I am taking my bug to Rod Penrose as well for full interior fitout. Can't wait to see your pictures in due course.
Cheers

Paulc1964au ·
Thanks john, when are you planning on getting your interior done? mine goes to rod's next month so if your going after me your welcome to have a look at mine once it is completed
Olive1975 ·
Thanks Paul. Planning to get Rod to do it in September when I am overseas for 3 weeks.
Paulc1964au ·
Here is an update
Car should be going for a full interior in the next few weeks first it is off to Adam at RAW to be stripped of interior then to Rod Penrose for the interior.
Rod will be doing the following
recover front seats
recover rear seats
2 front and 2 rear trims
front carpet
rear carpet
headlining
rear parcel tray
luggage compartment
rear seat belts
extra soundproofing throughout
kick panels
cover rear seat brace
rear foot boards
Recover sun visors
New gear shift and brake boot
Front seat head rests
Back to Adam to be refitted including new front and rear window rubbers, rear pop out windows and new front and rear billett bars.
Paulc1964au ·
just an update, the car goes to RAW on Monday for stripping then off to Rod Penrose on Monday afternoon for the new interior. I have decided at this stage not to change the front and rear bars.
Here is a photo of a print i had printed on aluminum it looks very effective.
will update once i take some photos of progress of the new interior provided Rod can leave his engine build alone lol

Its going to look pretty amazing after all that x

No was never a mirror, yes looking forward to the new interior as well

See, that is pretty damn cool!
If I take any of the mirrors off of mine, I have these massive gapping holes. Unfortunately I discovered these holes due to certain people liking Zelda too much and smashing them to smithereens! 🙁
What day do you reckon you'll get her back?
Paulc1964au ·
That really sucks about your mirrors, all going well should have her back in two to three weeks

Yep, but getting new ones today, chrome ones, none of the black plastic ones anymore! 🙂

Olive1975 ·
Tossing up between dropping in Recaro seats (second hand but recovered) or just recovering my standard 1975 seats - would prefer seats which hug rather than flat as standard. Have some thinking and decisions to make.
Also recover rear seat, new door trims, carpet, carpet under boot etc.
Getting the front lowered by 4 inchs. Looking at either 914 style rims, or 8 spoke sprinstars or Rivieras (my favourite).
Also I am building a subwoofer box behind the rear seat. Not sure where to position the front speakers,a nd I did note you have them in the kickwells. Also installing a 4 channel amp.
Rod has been great help and I look forward to finishing Olive before the end of this year.
Paulc1964au ·
The front speaker panels work really well as long as you sound proof them, rod will be covering them in carpet. Was he working on rosie today? lol

thanks Dan, I was in a similar position as you I wanted a pre 67 beetle as well but a few people said the 68-70 was a good medium model as it was already upgraded to 12 volts, some have disc brakes etc. I am happy with my 69 but will always love an Oval or pre 67.

Here she is positioned between two of the show winners.

Took rosie out for a drive on Saturday (yes i still drive although some people think i don't now I have my golf R) she was running fairly well although at one stage I parked and when I try to start her took a long time before she kicked over. After driving for another 30 mins or so we stopped at the shop for a few minutes when i tried to start her same thing occurred. She eventually coughed and spluttered then died.
she would not start at all and in the end i called NRMA after being advised the points were closed. When the NRMA turned up we removed the points and proceeded to clean the points which were pitted. When he reinstalled the points we noticed the plastic spacer that runs along the cam that opens and closes the points had broken off.
In the end Rosie had to be trayed home 🙁. Good lesson learned have ordered two sets of points, a rotor , condenser, a new cap, leads and a coil. Will keep these in the car and will also buy a point file, feeler gauges and keep some tools handy in the car .
Paulc1964au ·
Been a while since I updated this thread. Took Rosie for a drive today she is still running fine although won't idle once she has been running for ten minutes, not too concerned the engine will be built early in the new year.
Still need to buy a few parts then Rosie will go for a heart transplant, here are a couple of photos taken today
Paulc1964au ·
Been a while since i have posted, in between preparing my house for sale, reapplying for my existing role at work and selling off my N scale model railroading collection there hasn't been much time for Rosie. I did however take her for a drive yesterday and have a rego inspection. I have now all the parts for the engine build other than the new exhaust which i will purchase next month. This week I will call mike Kristen of custom bugs and buses to discuss time frames and process for the new engine build.

Rosie will go in for the engine as well as installation of Tacho, Oil pressure and temperature and head temperature as well as new fuel line, brake line, accelerator and clutch cables plus a few other bits and pieces.
Sold the existing engine already which was a bouns
Paulc1964au ·
Last Saturday I dropped Rosie into Vintage VW for the engine replacement as well as the following works
1. Replace firewall
2. Replace accelerator, clutch cables
3. Replace engine and transaxle mounts with OEM mounts
4. Replace gear shift with CSP, selector forks, couplings
5. Install oil pressure, oil temp and head temp gauges in glove box
6. Install tacho under dash forward of gear shift
7. Mount fire extinguisher on passenger pillar
8. Install fuel solenoid cutoff
7. New rubbers in head light reflectors and halogen lamps
8. Repair heater box levers
9. Replace fuel line
The engine will have a vintage speed exhaust fitted as well, all in all should be back home in a few weeks

Paulc1964au ·
Car is almost complete, had a minor setback where there is a what we thought a fuel smell in the car however the tank has been checked , new fuel line run and all new in the engine bay so its a bit of a mystery. The car always had a bit of a smell in it and im wondering whether the previous owner when he repaired the pan sealed the car with a petroleum based product? Boris also suggested the smell could be coming from the vinyl?
Aussie Dubbin ·
Did you replace the Breather hose and plastic fitting???
Paulc1964au ·
where on the tank?
Paulc1964au ·
Well brought the car home with no fuel smell, the fuel line was replaced in the tunnel but no sign of leak.
Car goes great although i will need to replace the deck lid, with the stand off on and doing 100km the oil temp rose too 115C which is a little high considering today was only 24 degrees. driving locally it sat on around 100C. Oil pressure was around 40psi and head temp around 350F.
Obviously the motor is tight but has lots of low down torque as i imagined. Only real issue is really bad noise interference on the sound system. Looks like i need to research whats the best noise suppression for the Mallory Dizzy.
The boys at vintage have done a fantastic job and i highly recommend them.
On Saturday i will be washing then clay barring the car then waxing
Paulc1964au ·
ok looks like noise suppression will be solved, I checked the mallory site and it specifically notes not to use copper leads so i will change them out on the weekend
Camo ·
Hi Paul,
Congratulations on the new lease of life and well done to VVD for their role.
You mention changing deck lid and stand offs, Why? Is it because of the extra heat you mentioned?
Not sure why, but my motor is larger capacity than yours and my 61 deck lid has no vents or stand offs and temps are fine.
So why the changes?
Cheers, Kev
Bizarre ·
Paul,
you will need to check a few things first
Jetting of the carbs and timing
Is the gauge reading right
Can you hold the dip stick
115C on a mild day at 100 is not right
Paulc1964au ·
yes that seems a little strange, here is what i posted on the samba
Picked up my brand new 1776 today driving down the freeway i noticed the following at 100km (65mph) the oil temp rose too 115C (240F) which is a little high considering today was only 24c degrees (75F). driving locally it sat on around 100C (212F). Oil pressure was around 40psi and head temp around 350F.
I have the original deck lid with no vents but had a stand off at the bottom of the lid.
Considering Sydney is in winter and our summer temps regularly go for 40C or (110F) not that i will be driving in the heat, should i consider either or both options
1. New deck lid with 4 vents
2. External oil cooler, engine has external oil filter installed
It could be purely because the engine is new maybe? I am going to continue to monitor before i definitely go ahead however i would prefer a new deck lid and remove the stand off
Paulc1964au ·

thanks yes Boris was a little concerned as well, it could be the gauges are affected by the wrong leads and being interfered with but highly unlikely.
What is the normal operating range for a aircooled engine? 90 to 100?
Head temperature is running at 350F

ian.mezz ·
you should of had temp gauge on old motor to get cross reference.
our cars ran at about 90 on the way to sawtell last weekend
and about 120 summer time going to VW Warwick. hood jacks drop temp 20.
Paulc1964au ·
Could it also be that the engine is brand new and still tight that could be running a bit hotter? when i got off the freeway it dropped to about 100C
Craig Torrens ·
Paul, the motor shouldn't be running that hot. I'd suggest you get the tune checked out.
350 head temps indicates you're running lean IMO........this will create heat.

Did you use a runing in oil?
Not sure I will check with Boris today I am assuming because the engine is new and tight that until it loosens up it may run a little hot, the temps recorded are the first trip the car has done since leaving the workshop
Bizarre ·
55 idles for 40 Dells is unusual. 60 is the norm.
But as long as they are set at "best lean" and not just "2 turns out"
Paulc1964au ·
Interesting I supplied the dells with 60's but apparently it was running too rich
Paulc1964au ·
Current oil in engine is running in oil Lucas oil SAE 30 high zinc content

Paul,
you have to remember those carbies of yours came off a car that was tuned where my car was tuned and it's shit house. Also he drills out the jets, rather than replacing them so who knows what size yours were really. Mine runs so rich, my eyes water if it's idling in the garage and stinks the house out.
I'm sure the VVD guys have set it up right.
Kev
Paulc1964au ·
I have no doubt the VVD guys have set the car correctly it will run a little warm until the engine has been run in which means I will be out and about every weekend
Craig Torrens ·
try and take it for a good drive Paul, preferably not stop start city driving or extended freeway cruising. A good country run with hills and corners etc which gives the motor variable rev and load ranges is the best IMO.
Paulc1964au ·
thanks Craig just did a run to sutherland and back most the time was under 100C got to 110C on the way home. motor is very tight will be great once its run in 🙂 really happy with it
Camo ·
Hi Paul,
glad to see you out using the car, which is why you built it 😀
I thought you wanted a hand to change the spark plug leads or did you work out just to take one off at a time and replace it, move to the next one and so on. It isn't rocket science 😂😂😂😂
See you in the morning 👍
Kev
Paulc1964au ·
Well i just sent you a message but no hurry on the leads yeah i am not totally confident enough as they are different to the copper leads
Paulc1964au ·
ok silicone leads installed (thanks Adam) however made no difference to the issue with the head unit. It sounds as if it is clipping or maybe issue with ac interference???? As soon as the engine stops it works fine. This isnt when you just use the radio but CD player as well.
anyone else come across this situation?
ian.mezz ·
there are some nice roads down peats ridge/ Wiseman's ferry.
now's the time to get out for a cruz , while the weathers not to hot.
I took my super for a run to Sydney to watch the vw race at Sydney drags😊
Paulc1964au ·
Very true Ian, it was so good driving to Sutherland and back today, its a new car now with the new engine, CSP shifter etc
Paulc1964au ·
Tried wiring the sound system direct to the battery but had no effect with the suppression issue. I went to an audio store today and they said sometimes you cannot stop the issue with distributors. I will take the car down to them to take a look but its very strange.
thanks Ian i am hoping a suppressor will fix it, its not just the radio but also the cd player
ian.mezz ·
it was years ago I think that I got it from tandy or dick smith .
It just wired in behind the radio .
Aussie Dubbin ·
Is it an amplified setup? Can't run the speaker wires down the same side as the power???
Paulc1964au ·
no separate amplifier but its coming through the power supply as it happens when using the iphone or Cd not just radio

Hows the motor running Paul ? Temps all ok now ?
Paulc1964au ·
Craig Torrens wrote:Hows the motor running Paul ? Temps all ok now ?
The more i drive it the sweeter it is, today was running around and it was pretty much sitting on 90C, engine has around 300km on it now but starting to unwind a little, really happy with the power

Wait till 3000k's, then again around 10000km, they realy free up then.
Enjoy the ride

I am wondering whether I should upgrade the brakes in the long term currently the beetle has type 3 drums on the rear and original VW disc brakes on the front.
Should I upgrade the front to CSP discs or should i fit discs to the rear? If I put CSP on the front can the current discs on the front be fitted to the rear?
hellbugged ·
Long term.
When it's time to look at rebuild of existing package the outlay $ might mean an upgrade is viable.
In reality unless your pushing for times on a track, the combination you have will be up to the task, no questions.
Bizarre ·
I wouldnt wast the money
If you want red brembos showing - do it
But the set up you have is very good
matberry ·
I agree, stock disc/type 3 drum is definately a good package. I'm with Daimo that if yours were stuffed an upgrade is a little more financially viable, altho any single piston calipers would NOT be on my shopping list.
Paulc1964au ·
thanks guys i appreciate your advice
Paulc1964au ·
Installed an inline suppression filter to the power supply and didnt make any difference i am thinking the distributor has such a strong spark that nothing is going to stop the issue
Craig Torrens ·
You have induction noise, no need for a radio 😂😂
1303Steve ·
Hi
Try disconnecting the charging system, that maybe where the noise is coming from. If that fixes it you may need a suppressor on the charging circuit
Steve
ian.mezz ·
we have big radios in our dubs with electronic diisy and no probs
Paulc1964au ·
thanks guys the car is going back to Boris next Saturday for an oil change will look at it then.
BTW Craig took it for a spin and your right i just love the sound of the car 🙂

If i disconnect one lead that should be fine to test?
Bizarre ·
^^^ No - he is talking disconnecting the alternator

I disconnected the spade terminal wire of the alternator but didnt make a difference

Does the noise go up and down with engine revs??
make sure everything is earthed well..
separate perfect earth connections on everything..
means scratching the paint off under each connection..
also, could try attaching an earth lead to the distributor or engine..
check the earth strap at the nose of the gearbox to chassis..
Your spark plug leads - are they resistance type or wire type?
I'm guessing You have a low resistance spark plug lead system
beetles normally have a resistor in the distributor rotor plus in those bits that sit on the spark plugs.. but I'm guessing its an earthing issue... which is being picked up by Your amplifier etc,,
cheers

kinda strange its like the amp is being clipped

I have Taylor Spiro Pro 8mm Plug Wire Set - Blue leads
Will have to check all earths so is the earth strap at the front of the gearbox?
68AutoBug ·
Hi Paul
You should be able to see it hanging from the chassis to the nose of the gearbox near the front gearbox mount..
I made one out of a new long earth strap I had, I soldered each end and drilled holes
it needs to be shiny on the strap and the chassis metal so it earths out to the chassis metal, not thru the bolt..
Use a new zinc plated bolt and flat washer..
Many of these straps are missing these days and the flow of electricity has to go thru the gearbox gear shifter etc to earth out..
I've seen headlights go dim when changing gears... lol
earthing problems arise due to a car being painted etc.. as its natural not to want to go scratching the paint off.. lol
cheers
best of luck
LEE
Paulc1964au ·
Thanks Lee i will check the earth tomorrow
Bizarre ·
doubt if it is earthing if everything else is working fine
first thing to go would be the battery not charging or not starting properly
I know you are using Taylor Spiro Pro 8mm Plug Wire Set - Blue leads
But are they noise suppression leads??
Paulc1964au ·
Taylor Spiro-Pro 8mm Custom Fit Spark Plug Wires
Features
Spiro-Pro's two-layer 100% silicone inner core & outer jacket keep the wires flexible for the life of your vehicle, maintaining its vibrant color with heat protection to 600º F
Spiro-Pro wire consists of a highly conductive spiral wound core with a stainless steel wire covered with conductive fluorocarbon material
350 ohms per foot resistance provides more fire power to the spark plugs than OE resistor core wires and has up to 10 times less resistance than standard resistor core wires
Spiro-Pro eliminates radio frequency interference (RFI) and is recommended when using multi-spark discharge electronic ignition systems and other electronic components
68AutoBug ·
Looks like they are OK then Paul...
I like those leads but too expensive for Me.. lol
and I wasn't sure whether they were the suppression type or ones used on race/drag cars which don't need to be suppressed etc...

Looks amazing Paul, notice that vintage didn't fit a breather box setup for additional breathing to releive crankcase pressure

new motors don't have a lot of pressure to get rid of.😊

It's been a while since I posted an update, yesterday Rosie went to Vintage VW for a service as well as a few bits and pieces, as usual Boris, Mike and the gang did a fantastic job, couldn't be happier.
Next upgrade will be replacement of the rear deck lid with one with 4 vents then I can remove the stand-off
