36hp challenge

Just guaging a bit of feed back to determine whether a 36hp challenge/cup will work in Australia. The concept will be based on US classes and be a ciber type record which will require the SPIRIT of competition. This allows anyone anywhere in Australia to compete in a sactioned drag race event with the only requirement being your timing slip as proof. Am happy to get this off the ground as I think its a brillant challenge which wont rely on BIG pockets .....more old school knowledge...........After competing at speedweek on the salt the land speed title will be internationally reconized..stands at 73.4mph.A quick run down on classes include a stone stock 36er....{SS] dual card open [DSS] period super charger etc and new age turbo 36ers.......hope a few of you guys see the fun and potential in having a bit of safe fun cheers steve

sounds cool in need more info about 36 spec and what body mods and other mods and ok?

HappyDaze ·

The drag-strip idea is good, it would reduce the need to travel hundreds of kms - over some crap roads - to compete on a rather doubtful surface. Timing would probably be much more reliable, also, not to mention the huge saving in water (mega-litres required for cleaning salt, mud etc. from cars, tow vehicles, trailers etc.)

Keen to hear more.

Cheers, Greg

Yeah doit, but have classes for diferent engines, not just 36hp's, but 40's, 1600's and bigger, all controled under similar rules........oops worms

matberry ·

That high speed run was cool, sustained rpm......webers toooo....mmmm.....😍😍😍

Stay tuned for the next phase of a national 36hp Challenge. Powers to be are currently developing some thoughts and options to grow this activity.
Outcomes will need to facilitate increased enthusiast involvement in the sport that must to driven by low cost outlay but result in high recognition.

I have a watercooled car, what class will that be in ?!😂😂

HappyDaze ·

I think that would put you in the 'W.C.' class Craig!

Cheers, Greg

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Great idea!! Love the concept albeit we now have to beat Crazy Col king of all things weird and wonderful 36hp wise LOL

Oh that idea should go down the drain...holy crap that's not funny 🤓

enough with the toilet humour....😂😂

HappyDaze ·

Yes Matt, I think we should close the lid on that one, although Craig likes a joke, dunny?

Cheers, Greg

HappyDaze ·

Being serious now! Hey Steve, any chance of another drive, or have I been banned?

Cheers, Greg

Kombi_Rescue ·

Greg keeping the seat warm for ya..........you want to take the stock 36 down the drag strip in a couple weeks ?

58camper ·

If there is a chance of a larger seat to park the arse and the ability to get another 8 or 9 hp from the motor to offset the distinct weight disadvantage that I come with maybe I could sneak into a seat. It could be the 44 hp or 45 hp challenge or just a challenge to get my arse into the drivers seat.

Just dont ask me to fit into the Ghia

What's that supposed to mean?

humpty ·

Funny you guys should mention this.... A couple of WA dubbers are playing with this idea as we 'speak'....

FROSTY ·

Hey this could be good, 36hp engine and post your time slip (could also youtube a clip for laughs).. what time would a stocker do?

humpty ·

Any of you Woolongong fellas remember Mick Tait?.... He's getting the itch once more, and I have offered him a 57 Big Window Bug to help the cause....

The official 36hp World Record is 73.496 mph held at the Bonneville Salt on the 2 mile timed track.
There were three ( I think) challengers to the world record only last week at the World of Speed but the time was not beaten.
The Ratmuller Racing team achieved 75.01mph last March using GPS timing equipment over the short track and are preparing for another assault next March. Watch the record tumble.
There is also some interest being generated in Melbourne by a couple of fellow enthusiasts who have indicated they will be running vehicle next March as well.

HappyDaze ·

Hey Bill, I'm sure it felt faster than that....wasn't it 75.1😂

Cheers, Greg

FROSTY ·

I want to what it would do for the 1/4 or1/8 mile?

fullnoise ·

I'm possibly in. Great idea.

Craig could have his own class based on personality-type; then it wouldn't matter what car he drives.

Would be funny to see him protest against himself to the race organisers😂

Hehehe..........good to see the lover boys are in fine form today. 😉

I'm amazed it took so long between posts......I can just see it now, Christian on the phone to Jak with the conversation going like this......

Christian: "you write it"
Jak: "No you write it"
Christian:"I'm scared, you write it"
Jak: "I will back you up, remember we are friends forever"
Christian: "Oh Jak ,youre the best"
Jak: "No you're the best"
Christian: "NO YOU'RE THE BEST"
Jak: "Oh lets just eat Pastizzi, and talk about our love for each other"............

😂😂😂😁😉

LMFAO! 😂

HappyDaze ·

Meanwhile............back at the salt lake, if it's as much fun as last time, I will be looking forward to the 36HP challenge next year😎

cjbolt051 ·

where do we find a copy of the rules for what can and cant be done to the motor ... sounds like fun

HappyDaze ·

General salt lake rules........info@dlra.org.com.au

36hp challenge rules..........burlybug@comcast.net

58camper ·

Here is a couple of links to various websites.

Running here in Oz means you have to follow the DLRA ( Dry Lakes Racers Australia) rules which are a tad different to the US (say Bonnevile) rules. Here you must run a roll cage which is not a requirement in the US for the 36 HP Challenge and tyres must be fitted with metal valve stems. They are the primary differences.

Let me know if you need further info,

A few calls to the cla brothers and we have possibly a 2 car team one stone stock and one supercarged.gonna have to do some serious planning for this.Plus muller is gonna be tough to beat!I hear he has some serious skunk works going on!wish i had some inside info on his new 36.I've only got inside info on a couple of fast comodores from brisbane and that don't help a 36er.

coletrickle ·

The engine I had in mind although period correct to say the mid 60's,simply using a Vw stamped magneto means it don't get no love?

sander288 ·

Greg you should get that Arnott out of moth balls for the salt...

HappyDaze ·

You been intercepting my phone calls. Shaun?😏

bajachris88 ·

So the 36hp engine stays 36hp, with no mods at all?

Whats the differing factor between competitors? (excluding the different in their body weights and how far they press the accelerators etc. etc.)

This sounds awesome and affordable 👍
