Moderator elections

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/82769/moderator-elections

silver ·

Ok just like politicians the Moderators are also prone to becoming stale or jaded or both
So should we elect new ones and review existing mods
this is of course subject to people nominating themselves

dogo ·

Sorry but the third option should have read:

Would it also be possible to reject member(s) who carry on in a manner that is not constructive and/or detremental to the enjoyment of any other member(s).

I guess no bodies perfect!

so you are exercising your opinion good!

ArtyP ·

I will noninate you Silver sounds like you could do a good job??

matberry ·

This could get awkward...

I can't comment (as much as I'd like to) until first I understand what is required of them and how do they get the position that they have and what is thier duties.

SuperOwen ·

Apart from running the board in a technical sense we shouldn't need moderators. If people could just be polite and behave like adults that is, but evidiently that isn't the case..... I've said it before and Ill say it again, our usernames should be our real names, or at least have our real names attached to our username. That would put a stop to a lot of the slanging that happens, and if people still want to hurl abuse around then its on their own name.

It would also make it far less uncomfortable when you meet up with someone at a show etc and they introduce themselves by their username "Hi I'm acesuperdubnut-shizzlemedizzle..."😂

Owen Milner

EgeWorks ·

The thing with private forums (like this one) is that there is no requirement that we have 'free speech'. Regardless of whether moderators are right or wrong, the forum owner, and those who have been entrusted higher privileges, can do whatever they feel like with the content of the forums.

If a member doesn't like the rules they can just go somewhere else, or make their own forum. It's happened in the past.

Anyway, who would want to be a moderator - you are mostly there to clean up after other people's messes and take abuse from disgruntled members. No wonder they can get over zealous from time to time.

this thread could get ugly

mmmm, thinking it could h,,hey silver the mods airnt bad on avd ,you should try that other kombi forum brother, there like blue cattle dogs, you would not get away with what you are saying they would just ban you and name and shame you, quite nasty infact,i know they have a job to do but i get sick of reading about all the hard work mods do ,they must want to do it so that makes the majority of them control freaks, please dont get stale mods, some of these mods are probably mods on other forums as well, they lovvvvve it,

jjwebb123 ·

Mods arnt a big issue, most of the info i get from people who arnt mods is terrific. In a way anyone who has over 2000 posts i consider as a loyal avd-er,and a mod in an instance.

Why????? Nominations were called some time ago to people who would like to offer their services as "moderators",which is how I became one. I'm definetly not one of the "in crowd" and have caused problems of my own from time to time😂 Shit happens. Most of my time "moderating" is spent deleting crap out of threads that is not relevant to the topic as posted.....
As for being rewarded.....hmmm....I've had people threaten me with legal action, at one time someone was stalking me🤓 and someone went to the extent of getting my home address, phone number etc and threatened to come around and "sort me out",early morning phone calls etc....😂 Ahhh...the joys.....

jjwebb123 ·

WHAT ARE YOU SERIOUS MICK? That is bullshit, that someone would do such a thing,we are supposed to be all mature adults.

Joel ·

ugh kombiclub lol, a good freind of mine is a moderator over there still and the crap she tells me that goes on reminds me why i would never moderate again
last thing i used to like was not be able to check out the forums cos an inbox full of whinging....boooohooo so and so said XYZ and that hurts my feelings.... cry cry cry

Where's the emoticon for yawn when you want one?

They could be a loyal AVDer or they could also be posting crap every day wouldn't take long to get your post up saying the same damn thing or some other useless crap every day 3 post a day for a month thats close to 90 posts. I could have my post count up to a few thousand by the end of the year too.

Been registered here since 03 Loyal AVD-er i'd say so but i got 199 posts including this one next one makes me 200 posts. Might go post some crap somewhere.

I'll keep this one on topic so it wont be removed.

Moderating a forum is not done for fun, it's done to help out and keep a forum online - to keep it a place where the majority of its members like to be. Just as in the real world, you will always come across people who like to make things difficult for others and cause as much trouble as they can. You come across all types of people - even ones with mental illness - but hey, you try to cut them some slack, but you still have to keep the forum ticking over for the majority. Trying to keep out the spammers, flippers and the scammers - regardless of what type of forum it is.

I love the way people can volunteers for doing their nominated job. If you think you can do a better job than a certain moderator, nominate yourself to replace them (and except all the responsibilites it entails) and see how many votes you pull OR you can shut the hell up and let people get on with their unpaid duties. Without moderators forums would be chaos. my2c

Every web forum like this one is run on a private website. Someone owns the website, and they therefore own the forums. Usually the owner pays for the domain name, hosting arangements and forums software. The owner of the website appoints the forums administrators, or does it themselves, and they authorise certain users of the forum to help moderate the forum.

The point is that the owner of the website can decide who can join, who can post, what can be posted, what can be deleted or removed, and who should be banned. Moderators are usually fairly like minded, because they are acting as a proxy for the owner. Why would an owner of a website make users moderators if they didn't generally agree with their views? Moderators on forums often get accused of being a bit 'clickey' but that's just the nature of a group of people appointed to act on behalf of the website owner. Of course they are going to have similar views.

It is not the right of users of any forum to say who should or should not be a moderator. Forums are not a club. You pay no membership and they have no constitution. If you want to vote for a comittee then join a club, pay your fees ,and vote at the AGM. Moderators should not have to defend themselves or their decisions. They are acting on behalf of the owner, and not the users. This is why each of the VW forums around have different feels, because they all have a different group of mods with different positions. DSK is pretty open slather, KC is more reserved, and Melburg and AVD somewher in the middle. That's good. If all the forums were the same then we couldn't cater for all the types of people and what they expect of their VW forum.

I have respct for any moderator of any forum. They all do a job that leaves them open to abuse, ridicule and allegations (oh yeah - hi Pete). In the end it is the website owner that they act in the interests of. Having elections for moderators is a ridiculous proposition. Moderators should be appointed by the website owner. Users have no right to say who should or shouldn't be a moderator.

komuter ·

spoken like a true mod😂

Vanders ·

If you don't like it Pete, start your own forum. You would already have lots of members: ratafied and mmm and ccc and dan_b and lisa...v and komuter3 and komuter6 and komuter1-5 to start with. That makes at least 10 different usernames you have tried to sign up to KC with since you've been banned. You and your alters have more than enough members to start your own forum.

komuter ·

Scarab ·

I am only relatively new to VW's and this forum, so my opinion may not count for much, but I'd like to give it anyway if I may.

I am a member on many other forums, but keep coming back to this one because I enjoy chatting with many of the people on here and seeing the effort that is put into their cars and their hobby.

I don't come here for all the bickering etc. that has been going on here lately....its pretty sad to be honest.

The moderators have a job to do....and from what I can see, this involves making this place a good place to be, and safe for young people to be on as well....but at the moment, i hesitate letting my sons sign up on here, because I fear there is a bit too much negativity etc.....and not enough encouragement and friendship / comradery being displayed. It is my honest opinion, that the moderators do an awesome job of what the are required to do and should be encouraged, not dragged down in their efforts.

My wife went to her first VW show with me last weekend and commented that the type of people involved with VW's very friendly and seemed to be sincere....on the whole I would have to agree, but sadly it is not always the case on these type of forums, with a lot of people scared to shed their on-line anonymity, and hiding behind avatars.....as has been said earlier "ït takes all types of people....even ones with mental illness" (I have bi-polar disorder so I am proud to say that includes me too!! 😂)

Please excuse my ramblings, I just wanted to add my opinion, ..............and then get back to my passion....VW's!!

Thanks

Scarab (aka: Paul Lucas, Brahma Lodge, South Australia)

Well komuter (Pete) my name is Paul, but like you I have a username (Vanders).

Pete, you respond to a post I make above, the first I make in this thread. You've got a grudge against me for what went down on KC, which I understand. That's fine. I stand by the actions of myself and other mods on KC. I have not met you and I have no vendetta against you. If I did meet you I'd offer you a beer and talk VW crap. On KC I have a job, to be a moderator. That may mean that actions are taken against members that they may not like. Like I said, I'm a proxy for the owner. Don't take it personally Pete, but I will defend decisions taken by mods on KC, even if it means defending them on other forums. That's part of being a moderator. It's not all about being the highest poster, or having the most VW's. It's about upholding the values of whatever forum you are a mod for and seeing it through.

I'm sure you and I will have more robust discussions here on AVD, and I look forward to them. If everyone agreed, life would be pretty boring.

Vanders wrote:Moderators should be appointed by the website owner. Users have no right to say who should or shouldn't be a moderator.
At the risk of getting back to the OT possibly :

Vanders is right that users don't normally get involved in that process of appointing forum mods, and really I think that's the way it should be.

.... BUT ....

Moderator's are not God's... they're accountable to both the other mods and the forum owners... and that includes being reviewed after sensible complaints raised from the user base.

I've been on forums in the past where one mod or another has continually gone over the top, waging war on the user base etc... and guess what - they ended up getting mod status pulled, In one case they even got themselves banned entirely from the forum.

Have to say tho... I don't think any of that is going on AVD... I think the mods here are pretty even handed with things....

👍

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

All the car forums I am on mods are not voted in by members. A list of possible members who might make good mods is compiled by mods then they vote on them not the members. Once sorted new mods are announced and as always with forums old inactive mods are removed.

If a mod is overstepping the mark and abusing the power and priviledges given to mods then they are warned and treated like every other member of the forum.

Hell I have banned a mod on a toyota forum I am mod on for doing exactly that.....

I wish it would die too, but who cares theres only a couple of people in this thread stirring shit, most of the regulars are just taking the piss and having a laugh

for being on a toyota form, mod or not, you should ban yourself.. hehe..
Bit harsh there Warb!! You'd be hard pressed to find a better 4WD on the market than a toyota. Only the largest seller of cars in Australia after all...

If only VW could make something that wasn't so damm expensive to buy and maintain they'd sell heaps and I'd own one.....

I guess we all have to remember, like many things in life, being a member of this forum is NOT a right, but a privelage.

Treat it that way and you won't get bent out of shape nearly as easily.

I've found the mods on here to be fair. As for some of the members.... well that's another topic best left alone. This forum is not the place it used to be, but that's not the fault of the "mods" per se. You can only work with what you're given.

Isnt this the third option

"Sorry but the third option should have read:

Would it also be possible to reject member(s) who carry on in a manner that is not constructive and/or detremental to the enjoyment of any other member(s).

Hi folks,

The short story is that I pay the hoster, I run the infrastructure and I wrote the software. The buck stops with me when it comes to AVDS actions.

Your posts are your own thing, I can't take nor want credit for them, but unfortunately, we have to be a bit careful until the defamation and other Australian anti-free speech rules are relaxed, which the Drag racing and Overclockers fraternity found out to their immense cost. As these laws are about as likely to change as a Frenchman moving from next door to a brothel, things will to have to remain roughly how they are organized now. If we get sued (and we have been this >< close, several times), it's me. Not you. Even though past actions have not proceeded, it's not about who is telling the truth or who is right, it's who has the most money. Lucky for me, I have none, so I am very unlikely to be sued unless future litigants have a particularly dumb lawyer.

So although I'd love to experiment with this experiment in democracy, I'm going to have to let others experiment with this "free speech" ideal on their own forums, not this one.

The mods are here to do an important and thankless task. I need to trust them to do what they have to do without fear or favor, and it's not just moving or deleting threads (which is actually incredibly rare), but also to be an active part of this community. Good moderators are here to mentor new folks, lead discussions, and help out technically, or help in their field of expertise.

The current situation is that all the admins and mods vote on folks I or other mods nominate from time to time. Anyone can nominate themselves or someone else. You're not likely to be chosen if you have a bad rep, even if you are here all the time. If you're here all the time, are a huge VW nut (or just help out a lot), and respected by most if not all of the community, you've got a very good shot at being a moderator.

I do check from time to time (about twice a year) that mods are here more often than me, and if I see that some are not, then I ask them to step down. If I don't hear from them in about a week, I demote them. Sometimes, some of the admins and mods ask to be demoted. I usually agree to this as mods can cause havoc if they're dissatisfied.

This system has worked well for the last seven and a bit years, and I really don't see much of a reason to change it. However, you folks are our lifeblood, please give us some feedback and let us know how we can improve. We'll have a chat in the Moderator's Paradise, and we'll implement the good ideas, or at least try them out.

thanks,
Andrew
