Had enough now

Gidday all
Alright I have had enough. Firstly starter motor problems (starter motor ok), broken clutch cable (fixed), broken arm on clutch operating shaft (fixed), through out bearing ruined cause of saft problem (fixed). All back together, now starter motor not meshing with flywheel (spins when shorted across terminals but engine not turning), not enough power getting to starter when key turned. Is the the life of a VW owner or should I just assume I have been cursed.
Could anyone help me with advice for the last 2 problems.
Thanks!:

It sounds like either the battery is failing or the starter solenoid. Do your headlights remain bright when the key is turned? - if so, then try whacking the solenoid a few times with a spanner.

pod ·

do a search for Starter relays, helps boost the power at the starter

maybe not enough power , battery maybe low on charge.
can you turn the motor over witha spanner on the pully.??

Have had the car running after clutching it and when I got back the headlights were like tea candles.

An easy way is to borrow a good battery from someone and try that first..if it works then the starter is ok and I'd be looking at possibly your generator/alternator and maybe the regulator. But first things first...rule out the starter as the problem.

If I can get starter motor to turn over by shorting across terminals but it won't turn from key can I assume that the solenoid is stuffed?

Woz72 ·

Yes, it sounds like the solenoid is shot.

one thing everyones missed, CHECK YOUR EARTH STRAP!

baghall ·

OK
Solenoid was shot - so new starter motor - engine now turns over but not firing, not even once.
Can I please have some more ideas?
Thanks

I'm no expert but are you getting a spark? hmmm have you taken it to a VW specialist?

Woz72 ·

battery, coil, leads?

Hi
You need to remember that these cars have given good service for around 40 years so many parts are going to wear out...
plus, many parts which were supposed to be replaced every year at least hasn't been done...

Once everything is OK...
it will go for many years....

points, rotor, distributor cap and condensor should be replaced at least every few of years depending on how far it goes..

Ignition switches are very old now and are starting to fail..
by placing a relay next to the battery or above the starter motor makes a BIG difference in power to the starter motor solenoid..

Sorry I can't show You any photos as I'm in Adelaide at the moment..

best of Luck
