Here are some pics and info on the build of this car as it is now almost ready to hit the track.

Chassis was built by Ron Lummus. Chromoly with strut front, type 1 swingaxle ladder bar rear.

Chassis was built in Right Hand Drive Configuration.

Custom RHD pedal assembly was manufactured from Chromoly.

Chassis was then shipped to Australia ready for body fitment and tin work.

A 57 body was first fitted but after discovering a great deal of rust, this 54 body was used.

The body was fitted to the chassis using the stock heater channel mounts on each side. Additional mounts were then made, allowing the body to be channeled over the chassis for a lower roofline. The sills along with most of the internal sheetmetal were then removed.

The dash remains along with glovebox, ashtray and radio block off.

Semaphores remain fitted but not (yet?) operational.

Next the interior tin was manufactured. Each piece was made from a cardboard template. Once trimmed to size and step rolled, Dzus tabs were welded to the chassis.

About 50 seperate pieces make up the tinwork on the car. This includes this area of the rear seat, firewall and inner wheelwells.

The front bar work was enclosed, creating a front firewall.

Battery, fuel pump and ballast box at front of chassis.

A tunnel was manufactured inside to enclose the shift rod, clutch and throttle cables, fuel lines and wiring.

Rear wheel tubs were made to prevent tire debris from damaging the interior tin.

Fiberglass doors were fitted along with custom hinges and sills from 1/2" chromoly.

I then decided to go with the Mendeola swing axle transmission. As it is about 4" longer than the type 1, the chassis rails were extended. The front transmission mount plate and motor plate were relocated on the chassis.

The engine was then dummy fitted. As the Mendeola transmission was longer, a new engine cover / wing was made to suit the new setup.

Body and chassis then went off to the paint shop. Both were blasted and etch primed. The body was then refitted to allow finish and alignment of the panels. Fiberglass doors required lots of work!

Meanwhile engine and transmission were built. Transmission went back to Rancho Transaxle to be finished. Engine long block was built by Craig Brown. It includes Autocraft Case, Cylinders and heads. 86 x 100- 2700cc, Autocraft Cam, Scat Crank Wedgemated, Carillo Rods, J&G Floater Clutch.

Carbs are 58mm Terminators. Fuel System and Vacuum Pump from Product Engineering. Dry sump with pre-heater and 16v Alternator.

Exhaust was custom made over the top due to limited space from oil pump and parachute mount.

A Racepak data logger has been fitted with sensors for EGT, Clutch Speed, Wheel Speed, Oil Press & Temp, Pan Vacuum etc.

A fiberglass front was purchased from Creative Car Craft in Florida. Excellent quality. Lower front had to be modified to get 3" of ground clearance.

Work continues on the body, now in undercoat.

Including the inside.

Doors finished after many hours of work.

Body came back off chassis so the interior could be finished in colour.

Chassis colour was finished and ready for assembly.

Suspension, fuel and oil systems fitted. Springs were refitted to all of the Dzus tabs.

Transmission and motor fitted with only a couple of scratches. 😬

Finish painted interior panels next.

Pedal assembly and then more panels.

Plumbing and wiring next.

Dry sump tank fitted and plumbed.

Motor plumbed and wiring started.

Interior wiring finished and tunnel fitted.

Battery and fuel pump connected.

As much work as possible was done on the chassis before the body would go back on.

Chassis then went onto a trolley ready for the body to be fitted.

Meanwhile the interior of the body was finished in it's colour and the dash was assembled and wired.

Exterior of the body was painted in it's colour and then colour sanded.

Body was then fitted to the chassis.

The remaining panels were then colour sanded.

Once the body was on, some more interior panels were able to be fitted.

Tin work to enclose the motor installed next.

Safety gear fitted.

Body was then fully assembled for one last test fit of the doors and front before being masked up for final clear coating.

More to come very shortly!

Awesome car. Like westi said, it's been on Pagey's site for a while with no updates.

Thanks for the build up pics...and again... awesome stuff

vassy66T1 ·

Michael, that is fantastic!!! Great to see the attention to detail and the patience and perseverance in getting to the finish line.
Dying to see the photos of the body after clear.👍

STOCK ·

yeh dido to what westi said
what an awsome job mate
that thing is a work of art
can't wait to see it in the flesh
i think pagey finally has a competitor
for who has the best looking drag car

FROSTY ·

Fuck me thats unreal........!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dasdubber ·

Very very nice Michael. Congratulations on turning out what is one of (if not the) nicest VW drag cars in the country. I can see why the extreme attention to detail on every component would have blown out the time line for its completion (not to mention the budget I'm sure)....but its well worth the wait. More importantly though, can't wait to see how it performs on the strip after its shake down period.

Well done
Al 👍

BeetleJuice ·

Hmmmm!.....9's

cam070 ·

OMFG!
Incredible, a bug with a mission

oldskl60 ·

Awesome does not cut it - but that is all i've got... Work of art Michael!!
Thanks for sharing, all the best with getting it finished and to the track.

wilderness ·

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Nasty I wouldn't expect anything less from you knowing your absolute finite attention to detail. Absolutely awesome dude!!

So Warwick this year could the cars first outing yeah??

Looking at these pics has certainly made my day cause it has been shite since I got up this morning👍

Dak-A-Tak ·

Ha ! Michael , How far now mate , clear coat done ? , car home yet ? , love the clear plastic tube on braided hoses , to stop scratches and wear .

utter buggery ·

DUDEE! that thing is insane!

Awesome job 😍

dangerous ·

Must be finished by now dude?
When is dyno day?

nasty ·

Thanks for all the compliments. Here are a few pics from earlier in the week.

Finished off the airbox tin that seperates the carbs from the motor. There were a few issues with the width of the motor but that is sorted.

The loose panels have been cleared. The body has been masked up, just a little more to finish. It should be cleared in the next few days. While all the masking is on the body it's getting polished so the mess won't go everywhere. The headlights are getting airbrushed on the front.

Don't know when dyno day is but I was planning on being there. Had to go and get new glasses today so I can get the medical for my andra licence.

reub ·

Magic👍

Ps. See much of Laurie these days? If so say g'day for me. Cheers.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Michael a welcome competitor at the Dyno day!! Prolly around August at this stage cause Valla is on this year...

vwsteve ·

😂😂😂 nash with glasses, are they dame edna style?

Sides ·

Saw this car in the flesh today, and holy crap batman.... altho these pics are massively impressive they REALLY don't do it justice !!!

👍

(oh and a free bump for ya Michael... hopefully saves someone else feeling a dufus like I did in not knowing about your car 😊)

vassy66T1 ·

Shame on you Dave 🙅

How close now Michael??

nasty ·

Been stuck into it over the last couple of weeks. Paint work has been pretty much finished.

Doors and engine cover are assembled and finished.

Electrics and plumbing finished and engine running.

nasty ·

And finally onto the dyno.

Firstly setting up the carb jetting and linkages.

All the dyno runs are being recorded on the data logger.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Everything running smooth as far as tuning/dyno time are going Michael?? Car looks super and am looking forward to seeing it at Warwick in October!! (no Pressure LOL)

vwsteve ·

cant wait to see it go!

vassy66T1 ·

Great to see it on the Dyno!!!

Looking really good. Numbers? Video?

nasty ·

Finished on the dyno and here are the results. Found a few issues on the dyno (car not engine) but these are sorted. Now finishing final assembly and aiming for tech inspection in a couple of weeks.

vassy66T1 ·

Great numbers Michael 👍👍

All things going smoothly Warwick is looking good ... Sweet

Dasdubber ·

Looks very nice Michael, good luck wtih the weeks ahead.
Al

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Congrats mate. Hope all goes well and certainly look forward to seeing you and the car at the track in Warwick in anger again soon....

oldskl60 ·

Man this looks sweet! Can't wait to see it in the flesh with all panels on...

BeetleBug ·

Hi from Norway,

Your car is by far one of the best race builds I have ever seen. Absolutely stunning!

Looking at your dyno papers I hope it is ok that I ask, the results are WHP? What calculations do you use find the flywheel HP?

Thanks,

That is wheel power.
To give you some comparison,
my engine in its latest incarnation only made 220,
and ran 10.93@122 weighing 1785lbs(811kg).

Michaels car probably will weigh less than 1500lbs.
(681kg with him on board).

Engine power would just be a guess.
Mine makes about 250 by comparison.
Michaels heads flow enough air to make 256,
so you can run the maths from there.

BeetleBug ·

Thanks Dangerous,

Your ET of 10.93 with "only" 220 whp in combination with a weighing 1785lbs is VERY impressive. All my calculations would suggest around 260 - 265 WHP to manage 10.93 @ 122. Obviously I have no clue about Michaels flow numbers but if you say that they flow enough for 256hp I would guess they flow around 245 - 250 cfm in 25". 222 WHP could very well be around 250 - 255 flywheel HP.

255 HP and 2.7 litre is 94hp pr litre which is OK.

Again, fantastic car!

Fiatdude ·

very very very VERY nice

The only thing I can see it needs is a Boost gauge and the assorted supporting equipment

nbturbo ·

Yep-bloody awesome-what a read.Still going to be at Warwick I hope?

Wow x 100 + 1000 squared. Congratulations.

Why do people double up on pics and comments ?
The painter let Michael down with front not finnished . Painter now has a hit out on him !!!!!!!!!
Colour of car is real nice too .

Fabulous car and a credit to Michael's perseverance and his wife's support... well done to both of you 👍👍

awesome build Michael and great pics too . Your bug looks stunning and I wish you well with your future progress .
Great to see it at Warwick and look forward to seeing it on the strip in the near future

T25Turbo ·

I remember the black baja pumping out the Ice-T Iceberg tunes from under the story bridge in Bris way back when.

The new project is so awesome, can't wait to hear how it runs.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

The Baja from memory was actually a dark blue metallic.....

matberry ·

.......with hot pink engine 🤪

Boostn ·

Wow what a sexy ride.
It's been at least 10 years of build this thing hey?

vwsteve ·

it now needs a " I AM THE STIG " sticker for the back window to match his white helmet

i think it is around 10 years or more in the making but it sat for quite a while too

nasty ·

Finally have the car completely finished after running into some major problems with lack of travel on the front suspension.
Car is loaded in the trailer and waiting for some fine weather to get to a test and tune before Christmas. Hopefully Wed 15th will work out.
I have entered both New Years Series events at Willowbank in January and hope to have made a full pass at one of the upcoming test and tunes beforehand.

Great news Michael.
That looks sensational 👍

ian.mezz ·

I missed it to ,
I will listen again to day I think they said around 3pm .

dangerous ·

It was at about 8.30pm.

Dak-A-Tak ·

ARE ! didn't run any numbers , Car isn't staying straight , so he has to keep lifting off .
Very new car lots to sort out .

vwsteve ·

1st run couldnt find 2nd gear, bad adjustment
2nd run found 2nd and got to third but after every gearchange it wants to go sideways so he backed off
i missed the third and he was going back today, a lot of things to sort out but i can say when he launches the thing from the start you can tell there is plenty of power there and it wants to go very hard so we should see some nice times from this car when its sorted out🙂

Willowbank live timing says Michael ran an 11.92@83.3.
Most likely a half pass for licencing.

Half track was 6.81 and 1.44 sixty foot.
Missed the mph, but based on what I have run in the past it will be over 100mph.

20bkombi ·

Wow that's got potential!!!
Saw michael as we were leaving.

Well done.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Did you get all your licensing done Michael? Half track times are very impressive indeed!! Nice one!!

nasty ·

Had a fairly good night. First pass was a half pass for licencing. Got off it before half track (7500 RPM in 3rd) and coasted to the finish. 1.440 60', 4.350 330', 6.815@94.00 for the 1/8th, 11.924@83.30 for the 1/4.
Car launched reasonably straight and shifted fine after making adjustments to the rear suspension and shifter from last time out.
Tweaked the rear end for the second pass. Launched more aggressively than the first, started nice and straight but the wheelie bars unloaded left rear tire and got out of shape. Got off it and didn't record a time.
Got some good data and video of the rear end, so we are getting on top of the suspension setup. Shouldn't be too long before a full pass.
I'll get the video up in the next couple of days, not the best quality but you can see what's going on.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Nice one Michael. Good to see your getting the handle on the beast!!

nasty ·

1/2 Track Pass.

Probably out dated spax if my memory gets dusted off.
Michael did all his own tinwork.(door cards)

door trims . owner happy to freight the cards out here, and group buy of 3 sets works cheaper.

If the behavior in first gear gets just a little better it will take a few tenths of that IMHO.

We got two good runs in over the weekend from four starts. Pretty much got on top of the rear suspension and wheelie bar setup.
Weather was good with corrected altitude between about -250' and 1700'.
Here's the numbers:

2nd run:
1.411 60'
6.555@103.32 1/8th
10.350@126.96 1/4

4th run:
1.423 60'

Very stylish pic 😵

Weather for the weekend looks rubbish currently 😠

FROSTY ·

Did anyone hear how Michael went today at the winter nationals? did he quallify for tomorrow?

vwsteve ·

I unfortunately recieved the worst news possible last night, nash unfortunately rolled the racecar at the end of the track when the chute opened, unsure of any more details but obviously nash and sarahs dreams are shattered and as we can all understand are very unhappy atm, nash is apparently ok from what i hear.

ok not worst news possible but sad either way

dangerous ·

Not the 'worst news possible', because Michael is physically fine.
But yes, sad because the car is not looking so good.
Damage looks to be largely only the body shell.
The run was pretty good, but it looks like under brakes it got a bit of a 'tank slapper' going.
Michael said,"I nearly saved it", but it dug in at the last moment.

Michael ran under tha national record last night at 10.35@130.59 and only had to back it up this morning within 1%.
(10.45@129 would have done it)

Not much to add other than I am so glad he is unhurt,
and I am sure that Michael and Sarah will get it back on track in time and be under that National record again.

Stanley ·

Glad to hear Michael is ok most importantly.

Sorry to hear that this stunning car is banged up, but I hope we get to see it again in the not to distant future looking as good as it did and continuing to produce the results.

Top news on running under the national record

Best wishes to you and Sarah

Dak-A-Tak ·

To Michael & Sarah if there's anything we can do , I'm sure all vw friends will step up and help !!
If car needs new body , I bet we can find one here , just let us know .
Glad you were all right buddy , so close to kicking that berg record for us aussies😀

stoker ·

michael, sad to hear what happened at willowbank. Things like that tear your ass out,the build quality & performance were as good or better than most cars in oz from what i have seen from photos on here
As long as you are ok, rebuild it and blow bergs record out the window, stick your finger in the air and yell(YOU CAN ALL GO AND GET F#@&*$ED SOME OFF YOU) thats mine buy you can use it just once!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Nasty at least you walked away from it unharmed and that is prolly the main thing to look at. The car can be rebuilt but you can't. Record soo damm close but now a lil longer to wait for it officially!! Tough luck mate but as Pagey said I'm sure there are plenty on here who would lend a hand if the need be.

Talk to you at Dyno day next week!!

vwsteve ·

if anyone knows of an oval body can you let myself or nash know please, does not need to be a 54, preferably a 56-57, can be smashed front or rear and does not matter if heater chanels are rooted as all those areas wont stay, as long as main outer body shell is in gc, cheers

Dak-A-Tak ·

Lorry has one !! out at the farm.

lorry wants to keep his and my 54 is a last resort, prefer a less rare model to chop

matberry ·

I know of a perfect shell, but not sure about if he'll sell, I'll check it out today (if poss). Problem is, I think he'll want $$. I also know of 2 rusty shells, 1 Bris, 1 up here, both free.

Michael sorry to hear the sad news that your car is damaged after such an awesome build . I have sat back quietly admiring your fantastic work and hope that you get it back on the track soon .
I know that we are a long way from you down here in Wollongong , but if it of any help to you I do have a 55 oval body that would be perfect for you to cut-up for your car . I would be more than happy to donate it to you to assist in getting this awesome car back where it belongs ......😎

STOCK ·

Nashy and Steve.......see other thread with "h" doing the road trip with his transporter and trailer!........this oval might be far away, but could be easy as a few phone calls to have this body delivered to your doorstep.........would certainly be a fitting story to the comeradery of both the VW drag scene and this forum

"westi" has been popping out some ready one pice fronts....could get the most part of the package delivered in one trip

just thinking out loud

good luck

westi ·

i think the front ends are ugly.haha.
but if you want a freeby.all your's mate.
it will cost you a cheery when we race next.ahahahahah.cause that's the only way i am gona bet ya.
sorry to hear about the bad news.but if i can help out let me know.
us na boy's gota stick together.

nasty ·

Hi all, thanks for the well wishes and offers of help. I've taken Wayne up on his offer of the 55 body. Thanks Wayne! Making some arrangements with H to pick it up from Wayne on his road trip.
We took the body off the chassis on Monday and other than some grinding on the roof bar and one rear wheel the chassis and mechanicals are fine. The fiberglass front and doors are fine other than a few scratches. Engine cover needs a new top and Leons glass guy is going to repair the rear guards.
Hopefully it should be back together fairly quickly. Meanwhile the tranny and engine will get a freshen up while the body gets done.

good to hear!!! Hope the rebuild goes smoothly!!!

Might have been wrapped?

Stanley ·

Spray or wrapped it looks great.
Thanks for the update
Cheers

nasty ·

Yep, vinyl wrap. A beetle isn't the easiest shape to wrap! Too many curves.

typethreeking ·

I'll talk to you about it at the winters Michael, was thinking of a wrap for my car, looks great!

humpty ·

That's looking very tough Michael... Looking forward to the track results from this amazing car.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

How did you go on the weekend Michael? Get some good data and some passes down?

nasty ·

All good. One half track pass and second to1000'. Got rained out after the second pass. Car launched and handled well. Some fine tuning of the suspension to do and get on top of the tune.
First:
60' 1.441
330' 4.333
1/8 6.738 @ 101.44

Second:
60' 1.436
330' 4.326
1/8 6.747 @ 100.30
1000' 8.905

whathaveidone ·

Good results for first time out!!!! This thing will be a weapon when it sorted!!!! Well done.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Me thinks records might be a Tumbling this weekend!!

dangerous ·

First round begins at 8am this morning.
The air will be good, so there is always a chance that another pass within 1 %
and under the 10.38 record will be enough for the ET record. Fingers crossed!

The current record is 10.380. The zero is there because 18years ago(1995) they only timed to two decimal places.
The speed record is 127.66mph.

Michael's MPH is well above the national record,
but still needs a back up. This should be a good chance because Michael's best last night was 129.7mph.

Go for it Michael!

Sides ·

Times and MPH from Friday look super-consistent - so def in with a good chance.

So dumb question... do red lights and breaking out affect it, or do the ET and MPH still count ???

andrewmurphy ·

He ran 10.289 @ 130.34. But sadly red lit by -.146. Dial in was 10.37

FROSTY ·

SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That sucks!!!!!!!! I went out last night and saw the 3rd qualifier, man you need to be very proud of your self!!! It is one tuff drag car!!!!

dangerous ·

That should still count as a new SS/C national record.
Both ET and MPH.
10.289ET was backed up by the 10.381 from yesterday (within 1%),
as is the 130.34mph backed up by the 129.7mph from yesterday.

1.379 sixty is pretty awesome too!

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!

matberry ·

Wow, what news...awesome work Michael, congratulations.

Holy cow!

Craig Torrens ·

WOW

Stanley ·

Well deserved...congrats

nasty ·

Just a quick update from the weekend. We ran three qualifiers on Friday with the following results:
Q1: 10.381@129.19
Q2: 10.395@129.31
Q3: 10.424@129.70
First elimination was Saturday morning at 8:45. Dialed in with a 10.37 but red lit and broke out with:
60' 1.379
330' 4.175
1/8 6.528 @ 103.81
1000' 8.563
1/4 10.289 @ 130.34

Numbers were good enough to reset the SS/C national records for both elapsed time and speed with a backup of 1% with the slower results.
Car is performing well and getting close on the tune up. A big thanks to Dave Butler for crewing on Friday and the rest of my crew for their help on the weekend.
We have some in car footage and will post it shortly. Looking forward to racing VW Sydney at the end of the month.

humpty ·

Cool runs Michael!

Turbo54 ·

Hi Michael,
I hae noticed on a few of the vids you are running little scoops on the tops of your front guards? Do these act as little wings to keep the front down? I cant think why else they would be there.
Fill us in?
Thanks
Heath

Same questio0n from me.... Intrigued.

westi ·

i think its to clear the wheels.
cheers.nashy for the info.pretty tight runs

matberry ·

Tyre clearance, must have had issues with the guards rubbing on compressed suspension which could be fun in the deep end....not.

Awesome work Nashy

nasty ·

Yep, only there for tire clearance. Under braking they would rub. Left side was worse and would pull the car out of shape a bit. Wasn't nice at 130MPH!
It was a quick fix after the Winternationals to be ready for the Sydney event, so didn't have much time to make it look good.

humpty ·

It actually kinda looks good Michael...
