That number is a part number for the case...probably the tunnel type case.
You want the STAMPED number.
It will be stamped on a flat panel on the main case....more toward the front of the case.
Split case trannys(54?) it is on the upper right front,
and later tunnel type trans are on the lower right side.

Hi

113 301 103 is 40hp type part number, the earlier stuff had 111 xxx xxx.

A good friend of mine wants to replace the gearbox in a dune buggy. He has little knowledge of VW's and gave me the number 113 301 103.
Is it safe to assume this is a 40 hp box and if so does that mean he should be looking for a 1200 swing axle box? Sorry for my ignorance but my VW experience is confined to my '68.

Anyone?

As stated above,
those are just the casting part numbers of the case.
You need a STAMPED SERIAL NUMBER to identify what model it is.

And check these code lists: http://www.midsouthvw.com/TechTips/tech_tip_TransaxleCode.htm

If it is not there, let me know the number, and i will try to make a call on its age.

Thanks!
