New rings in a 1500?

I have a reliable 1970, 1500 upright engine that I'm about to put back in my Beetle that I'm doing some restoration work on.

It has no knocks or other worrying noises in it.

It's very smokey on start up and it uses about 1/2 a litre of oil on a long country run of about 500 km. It can use that much oil around town in about a month.

I have not pulled it apart yet, so I don't know the condition of the heads and valves.

Would a set of new rings and de-glazing the bores, along with a standard valve job fix the problem, or would it need a more comprehensive re-build?

replace all that you think needs it so you don't need to do it all over again

I have smoky start due to worn out valve guides.
I have had a worrying knock due to worn small end bushes
but on my standard 1600 I replaced just the rings and it used less oil

anyway personally i'd a set of 1600 piston and bore and new heads without splitting the case
some might say do proper job the first time
which would depend on your budget

and on even more personal note my budget would only alllow me to put thicker oil in lol
or add a bottle or two of stop smoke hahaha

I have a set of new german rings for a 1500 motor (83mm) if you want them for $40.

Cheers

Steve.
Thank you for that offer.
I'll keep it in mind. I'll need to make a decision soon. I'll get back to you.
